The 300-year anniversary of Columbus’ landing prompted the first recorded celebration of the achievement, in New York City in 1792. On the 400th anniversary in 1892, President Benjamin Harrison issued the first official proclamation urging Americans to celebrate the day. It led the Knights of Columbus, the largest Fraternal Organization with a Roman Catholic membership, to lobby heavily for states and the Federal Government to make Columbus Day official. Franklin Roosevelt created the first federal observance of Columbus Day in 1937, Richard Nixon established the modern holiday by presidential proclamation in 1972. New York City continues to show Columbus Day pride- the city holds the largest parade for it in the country. On September 10, St. Regis held our first Annual Oktoberfest. I want to thank the Oktoberfest committee and all those that assisted in this event for a superior job. We had a great amount of people come to this event. The food was amazing and Father Mike even came by and led us in cheer for this great event. It was a huge success and I look forward to next year and I hope to see you all there again. On September 21, St. Regis welcomed 11 new members as they made their First Degree. I would like to congratulate: Terrence Dee, Patrick Dineen M.D., Fred Yopp, William Tepenny, Daniel Fucci, Thomas Granley, Kevin Mawn, James Melchiena, Brian McMurray, Charles Fril, Thomas Granley. I look forward to working with you in our future charitable events. The Annual St. Regis Real Men Can Bake Sale is October 22 and 23 after all masses at St. Joseph’s Church. Look further in the Knight Life for more information on the bake sale. Fraternally yours, Grand Knight “Remember, we can only make this work by all working together.” In the face of the terrible events and assassinations of our Heroes in Blue who are defending US, please join me in praying for Peace with one of my favorite and beautiful prayers and ask your councils and officers to join us. Maybe use as opening prayer at meetings for a while? Prayer of St Francis Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console, To be understood as to understand, To be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; It is in pardoning that we are pardoned; It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life Vivat Jesus, John T. McGivney God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling His commandment of charity and building up His Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant, Father Michael J. McGivney, on earth accordingto the design of Your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen. This phrase, we are told, is to remind us to be conscious of our own mortality and to plan accordingly. As Catholics, we keep death always in the front of our minds because it is the gateway to paradise, but also because we want to be sure that we are preparing accordingly and living just lives, conquering sin and living for God, so that we may live with Him after death. But death is not always easy to think about. While we live with Christian hope, we know that our death also means sadness and trial for those we love. We know that we will leave a void, and, depending on the circumstances of our own death, we may even leave loose ends. But by thinking about the unthinkable, and planning for the inevitable, we may be able to reduce those trials and tie up some of those loose ends. That’s why we are excited to introduce the Knights of Columbus Personal Planning Workbook. The Knights of Columbus Personal Planning Workbook is a no-cost tool available from me to you. The thirty-four page book is a comprehensive planning guide that will enable you to record personal information, identify personal wishes, and supplement legal documents. With the Knights of Columbus Personal Planning Workbook, you can: - List medical information - Identify your long-term care instructions and wishes - Identify the location of records, documents, accounts, password, and other important concerns - Identify charitable gifts - Supplement your will with instructions and information on the distribution of your estate, as well as information on guardians, executors, and power of attorney - Express your wishes for your funeral service, including identifying readings, lectors, gift bearers, pall bearers, and fraternal or military organization involvement - Prepare a Survivors’ Action Items and Concerns listing for the settlement of your estate and the execution of your last wishes - Establish a list of people to notify - Record information on life insurance policies and other benefits - Express your wishes for an obituary - Write a letter expressing your wishes to your pastor The Knights of Columbus Personal Planning Workbook may not be the most enjoyable workbook you have ever filled out, but may be the most impactful. In a fast-paced digital age like ours, there are so many more things to plan for and to record, and so much less time in which to do it. The Knights of Columbus Personal Planning Workbook is and easy and effective way to gather your thoughts, details, data, and wishes for the benefit of your loved ones. This great resource is another extension of our founding mission, set forth by Father Michael J. McGivney, of protecting Catholic families. As pointed as it may seem, tempus fugit memento mori reminds us that we – with certainty – will die, but that we may very well not – with certainty – know when. So why not spend a few minutes preparing for the inevitable? You’ll have the comfort of knowing that you did the right thing, and the assurance that, when that time does come, you will have made a very difficult time just a little bit easier for the ones you love. To get a complimentary copy of the Knights of Columbus Personal Planning Workbook, contact me today. On October 19, we will be having a Benefit Night. See the flyer in this Council Bulletin. I would encourage you to come and bring someone that you think could benefit from hearing this information. They do not have to be Knights. Father Mike has graciously allowed the use of the Gymnasium and I hope to get many parishioners there also. I will be well worth the while to attend. Much needed information will be given that evening and all free. The expert panel will be on hand to answer questions. So please put this on your calendar and be sure to attend. Get the word out also. You will be doing someone a favor. Thank you. Call me if you have any questions. Harold Carlton 631-676-6211 May God Bless you and your family. I look forward to meeting with you. Congratulations Chief Petty Officer Christopher Carlton! Membership News I am very encouraged by our recent surge in Membership Applications. I pray that we keep this pace up. By the time you read this article, if all went well, we should have gained 15-20 new members. Best of all, by the Screening Committee reports, they are quality men, interested in improving the council, the Church, and enrich their faith. These are the men we need. Please continue to ask men of this caliber to join. Many will say no, but one may say yes which could bring great benefit to your council. Keep the fire going with new logs for the energy. I am very proud of this council and I know with the continued growth of these recent months, it will only get better. I heard a statistic at the degree that makes a lot of sense and want to pass it on to you. Women who go to church and take their children, 17% percent of their children go to church as an adult. Men who go to church and take their family, 90% of their children go to church as an adult. Brothers, we are the backbone of our church. We need to stand up and encourage not only ourselves, but all men to join us and keep our faith alive. We need to also be active in our church so we show our children how important it is for our faith to survive. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All of our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are thanks to our hard-working members. And more members equals more charity. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order. During the rest of the year, we often “forget” to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn’t joined is because no one has asked him yet? When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a “selling point” to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members. This is not about social membership. This is Fraternal membership. A brotherhood that stands together to fight for our beliefs. Continue to ask every Catholic man you run into to join our organization and continue Father McGivney’s dream of strengthening our faith. If you have someone in mind that you want to recruit, but need help, call myself or Danny Purcell (631) 4670230 and we will be glad to assist you. Remember Brothers: Membership is the lifeline of our Order. Ph: 631-676-6211 email: [email protected] “Real Men Can Bake” The Ninth Annual “Real Men Can Bake” Sale Is Almost Her e! Here! The Ninth Annual “Real Men Can Bake“ sale is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, October 22 and 23 after all Masses. Once again we need to “Rattle Those Pots and Pans” Weather Permitting, we are hoping to have a lot of fun selling the cakes, pies and cookies made exclusively by us guys “Sidewalk Style” on the steps of the church. New member contributions are especially welcomed. Remember they don’t have to be pretty, in fact all of our ugly ducklings sell very quickly. We think there is a strong sympathy factor at work. Additionally, we can use help setting up and behind the tables to make change and helping to pack up the cakes. As always the purpose of the sale is to raise money so the Council can welcome the proud Veterans from The Stony Brook Veterans Home, for a luncheon in their honor in November. Thanks to our members, last year was our best year ever, all of which went to give our Veterans a great lunch and gifts to take back with them. The Veterans now look forward every year to this event. Again all we ask is you try your best and God will take care of the rest! We want to thank Father Rieder for his help in making this a success. There will be a sign up sheet in the Council with more information. Hardware in Bohemia, OuterCounty Construction Corp and Agnew and Taylor Hardware all donated supplies to help with a massive Lake Ronkonkoma clean-up that took place on Saturday, September 17th. Windows On The Lake donated lunches for the volunteers. The Knights Of Columbus provided a facility for group meetings and The Lake Ronkonkoma Rotary Club has pledged support of LRIG. Approximately 100 volunteers from the LAKE RONKONKOMA IMPROVEMENT GROUP (LRIG) gathered to execute one of the first of ongoing clean-ups of historical Lake Ronkonkoma. The clean-ups have resulted in removal of over 10,300 pounds of garbage and debris, and 8.54 tons of tree limbs, brush and concrete fragments from the lake’s shore. LRIG has since committed to monthly clean-ups on designated Saturday mornings to continue the movement. “LRIG is extremely thankful for the support from our local businesses and organizations” says Evelyn Vollgraff, founding member of LRIG and President of the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society, “their support has made the impossible, possible” states Vollgraff. LRIG began as a group of concerned volunteers, residents and dedicated government officials. The group has quickly grown to include the support from local businesses and organizations to help with the advancement of the Lake. LRIG’s next clean-up is scheduled for Saturday, October 15. VOLUNTEERS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED! LRIG is a purely volunteer based group. The mission is to work with the municipalities to clean up pollution, restore the Lake, create family friendly recreation and support appropriate business in the surrounding Lake community. LRIG desperately needs more help and volunteers to make the necessary changes. Future cleanups, meetings and other efforts will be posted on the LAKE RONKONKOMA IMPROVEMENT GROUP facebook page. We are writing to you because we know of the Knights of Columbus’s dedication to charity and helping others. My father and brothers in law are all Knights. My father, Arthur Gould, has been a member of the K of C since I was a child. He was always very involved in all aspects of the organization, including selling life insurance for many years. I have been a member of the St.Louis de Montfort parish in Sound Beach since 1972. Pete and I were married in 1997 in an interfaith ceremony. We had our first children AnnaMaria and Thomas is 1999, followed by Jonathon in 2003. 1 began my ministry as a catechist in 2000 and quickly followed with First Holy Communion Committee and Vacation Bible School. I was part of the “Can’t say no to Sr. Margaret group”. Our kids joined in ministry through Children’s choir, VBS and First Holy Communion Committee as soon as they were old enough. The past few years many parishioners have asked where Thomas was, since he had not been attending mass with us. Thomas has been diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. These two disabilities are severe and have considerably affected Thomas’s life. He has been unable to attend mass or school for over four years. He is currently sixteen, soon to be seventeen, and has missed out on a typical teenager’s life. He sat back and watched as his twin sister went to High School, joined clubs, attended Home Coming and Junior Prom and continued to volunteer at church and within the community. These are all things Thomas looked forward to doing, but was unable to do. We recently found an amazing organization, Angel Service Dogs Inc. that is able to train a service dog to help Thomas with his unique needs. Kovu is a black La bradoodle that has already finished his basic training. He is currently learning specific tasks that will benefit Thomas. We hope that this training will be complete in August. Thomas hopes to be able leave the house without his mom, return to church and attend his senior year of High School. In order to bring Kovu home we need to raise $16,800. We have already had a few fundraisers, and in the past two months have raised over $4,000. Thomas has some amazing friends that are trying to raise the remainder of the funds necessary. They ordered wrist bands that say “Kovu for Thomas” on them and are selling them for $3 each. Father Charlie, our pastor, gave permission for these wrist bands to be sold after masses last week. We raised $2,800 to add to our goal. We would like to ask if you can help with our fund raising in any way. If you could perhaps share our son’s story in your member newsletter or with your local parish. If you would like to learn more about Thomas and Kovu you can follow us on Facebook at Kovu for Thomas, or go to http:// angel-service: dogs.networkfordogs.com/projects/12814/-kovu-for-thomas We appreciate any help or prayers you can offer. Many thanks for your kind support, The Jacobson family Theresa-Ellen, Peter, AnnaMaria, Thomas and Jonathon NIGHT Saturday, October 15, 2016 7pm Come Sing Your Favorite Song Sing Solo or as a Group Be a Star! Beer • Wine • Soda Heros & Salads $25 pp Debbie Woods - 631-277-3837 AnneMarie Woods - 631-642-7225 Message from the President My Dear Sister Columbiettes, It was nice to see some members we haven’t seen in a while, welcome back. For those that missed the meeting, one of the things we discussed was the Baby Bottle Fundraiser that the “Life Center of Long Island” holds at our churches. It seems that this program was discontinued by the Diocese, but has since been rescinded. Whether or not this program continues, the one thing everyone agrees on is that the “Life Center of Long Island” is a worthy cause and they requested help. There is a motion on the floor made by Vivian McCourt to donate $100 to this organization and it will be voted on at the next meeting. The discussion also covered, who can we donate to? The answer to this is: all donations must go to a 501(c) (3) organization, which means they are a charity recognized by the Internal Revenue Service. So any member can make a motion that we donate to any 501(c) (3) charity and we will discuss it. The following month the motion will be voted on to give others that were not in attendance a chance to have an input if they desire. During the vote 1 of 3 things could happen – the motion is passed as submitted, the motion is amended but passed (usually this happens if the amount changes), or the motion is disapproved, in which case we do not donate to that cause. So where does the money come from? If we do not have the funds available for the donation at that time it gets earmarked for the end of the year, and whatever funds are available after our budget is met is divided between those charities. Which is why it’s so important for all of us to support our fundraisers. Also, unfortunately if you participate in a charity which requires you to travel with an organization we cannot donate to you to assist with travel or supplies. We can only donate to the 501(c) (3) recognized charity. Any questions, feel free to ask at our meeting Wasn’t the refreshments great at the last meeting? What an assortment and everything was delicious. Feel free to bring something or call our meeting refreshment coordinator Emily Harris at (631) 285-3249 to volunteer. A big Thank You goes out to Rosemary and Gerry Mcmenamin for organizing our fundraiser “trip to Foxwoods”. Once again they did an outstanding job and made it look so easy to coordinate moving 104 people across state lines and back. While having to deal with issues way beyond their control! Our upcoming fundraisers are Karaoke Night – Oct. 15th & the Halloween Party Oct. 30th! Get your tickets at the next meeting!! Our next meeting is on Wed.
