October 2009
Our Town: A Community in
Conversation.
This series is a collaboration with media, business and community agencies
to identify and address emerging issues. The library is the link to citizens’
concerns by providing expert knowledge using primary sources. One characteristic of a strong community is a
social network where residents can obtain reliable information to work on
common issues together to improve
the quality of life and to overcome its
challenges. The program kicks off with
a discussion on the redevelopment of
Route 28 on Thursday October 15 at 7
p.m. at the South Yarmouth Library.
The speaker will be George Allaire, Director of Public Works.
Yarmouth Reads One Book
The Yarmouth Town Libraries are in
the process of selecting the final
choices for Yarmouth Reads One Book.
In October, you can participate in the
decision. The Yarmouth community
will select the book by choosing from
among one of three titles. People will

Our featured artist in October is
Patricia Running Smith. In the
fall of 2000, Patricia began working part time at the South Yarmouth Library. A patron, who enjoyed photography, encouraged
her to explore the digital world
and told her of camera clubs that
she might want to join. Coincidentally, she was given an old
digital Cannon camera and began
taking photos. She retired in
2006 – got a new camera and has
been taking photos almost every
day since. She belongs to the
Photographic Society of Cape Cod
and the Cape Cod View Finders.
Her Cannon G-10 goes everywhere with her. In her words,
“There's always a good photo
awaiting just around the bend.”

our art wall at the South Yarmouth Library.
SO YOU WANT TO BE A WRITER?
Do you always have a book within
easy reach and dream about writing
your own some day? Do you spend
your free time reading Twilight and
Harry Potter fan fiction sites and
think you could do better? Join
young adult author Marissa Doyle on
Friday, Oct. 30 at 3:30 pm at the
South Yarmouth Library for an informal discussion about what it takes to
be a writer, how the publishing industry works, and what you can be
doing now to sharpen your writing
skills. Interaction wanted--bring
your questions about books and writing! All ages welcome. Marissa Doyle
is the author of Bewitching Season
(2008), Betraying Season (just released!) and an as-yet unnamed
forthcoming novel, all young
adult fiction blending history and
magic from Henry Holt. She lives in
Sudbury and Chatham with her family, too many books (all bought for research purposes, of course) and a
bossy pet rabbit. Visit her at
