October Newsletter - Town of Yarmouth, MA
News from the Yarmouth Libraries www.yarmouthlibraries.org A message from the Director: I am very excited and proud to announce the Library’s involvement in several new projects: • Jayne Chouinard, Head of Children’s Services has been instrumental in planning and implementing the “Joseph's Boat, A Seriously Fun Workshop” series in conjunction with the Cultural Center • Christine DiMartino, Children’s Assistant will be working with the ME Small School on implementing their 21st Century Learning Grant. She will be conducting an after school book club for 4th graders twice a month over the next twelve months to engage students in the joy of reading and critical thinking. • Trish Cassisi, Reference Librarian is the point person for a new initiative kicking off this month called “Our Town: A Community in Conversation.” Yarmouth citizens will cast their votes and help select the title for “Yarmouth Reads One Book” FY 2010 October 2009 Our Town: A Community in Conversation. This series is a collaboration with media, business and community agencies to identify and address emerging issues. The library is the link to citizens’ concerns by providing expert knowledge using primary sources. One characteristic of a strong community is a social network where residents can obtain reliable information to work on common issues together to improve the quality of life and to overcome its challenges. The program kicks off with a discussion on the redevelopment of Route 28 on Thursday October 15 at 7 p.m. at the South Yarmouth Library. The speaker will be George Allaire, Director of Public Works. Yarmouth Reads One Book The Yarmouth Town Libraries are in the process of selecting the final choices for Yarmouth Reads One Book. In October, you can participate in the decision. The Yarmouth community will select the book by choosing from among one of three titles. Our featured artist in October is Patricia Running Smith. In the fall of 2000, Patricia began working part time at the South Yarmouth Library. A patron, who enjoyed photography, encouraged her to explore the digital world and told her of camera clubs that she might want to join. Coincidentally, she was given an old digital Cannon camera and began taking photos. She retired in 2006 – got a new camera and has been taking photos almost every day since. She belongs to the Photographic Society of Cape Cod and the Cape Cod View Finders. Her Cannon G-10 goes everywhere with her. In her words, “There's always a good photo awaiting just around the bend.” See Patricia’s work this month on our art wall at the South Yarmouth Library. SO YOU WANT TO BE A WRITER?
