WORKBOOK Welcome! This digital workbook is organized into three sections. The first section is a planning guide, an insider’s look at the process of making good decisions, getting started right, and living through the rigors of remodeling. The second section is our creative guide, which works step by step through the Showplace styles, woods and finishes. The reference section at the end gives detailed information about our most popular offerings. click here to see this kitchen... WORKBOOK The “I want a new kitchen” planning guide. So you want a new kitchen... good for you! At Showplace, we love it when people want new kitchens. (Then again, we make cabinets, so no surprise.) But there’s quite a journey between “I want a new kitchen” and “Come see my new kitchen, it’s all done!” If you’ve remodeled before, you know this. If it’s your first remodel, you’re in the right place. We’ve prepared this information to prepare YOU -- to empower you with the knowledge you need, right from the start. Not much of this planning information is about Showplace. We have an entire website for that, which you’ve already visited. (Also, you can learn all about Showplace in the second section of this book, if you want to.) This information is instead intended to show you what to expect along that path to a new kitchen... whether you use our cabinets or anyone else’s. quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer p2 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK First off, know what you’re asking for. What do you really mean when you say “I want a new kitchen?” The answer can range from a quick refacing job, to a minor remodel using the same “footprint,” to ripping out walls, windows and ceilings. A lot of this may be set by your budget and the layout of your home. But it’s an important thing to ponder early on. If it’s a minor remodel and you plan to do most of the work yourself, you might find a home center is a good choice. Getting cabinets from a “big box” home center is usually a cash-and-carry proposition, so don’t expect a lot of help down the line. But the price may be right. If you’re going to do a refacing job, you really need qualified help. Refacing cabinets is a demanding task that requires special tools and skills. It’s not a doit-yourselfer thing, at least not if you want it done well. And of course, a major tear-it-all-out project requires some serious firepower. If you haven’t already connected with a contractor, look for an independent cabinetry showroom that specializes in this sort of thing. But more on that later. Full disclosure time: Showplace cabinetry and Renew refacing components are only sold through qualified, independent dealers. They’re not available through any catalog, buyers’ club or website. And nothing from Showplace is sold through any big-box home centers. That’s because we’re committed to the independent dealer, and believe in the value of expertise in an important task like remodeling. But it’s also because we’re an employee-owned Midwestern company and we just prefer to do business with independent dealers, who are often employee- or family-owned themselves. Their personal reputation relies upon putting customer satisfaction first. We like that. Anyway, back to the point of all this: You really need to decide if you’re going into the deep end on this, or what. That decision will impact lots of other decisions later on. quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer click here to see this kitchen... p3 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK A chicken or egg thing: Which comes first, the cabinet brand or cabinet dealer? If you’ve done some homework already, you know by now that there are plenty of cabinet brands out there, from the local “custom” shop in somebody’s garage, all the way up to the biggest international names. How in the world are you supposed to narrow that down? Or should you start first with a local dealer, and see what they recommend? Chicken and egg. If you start by picking a brand, here’s one thing to factor: No matter how great a brand looks, it doesn’t really matter unless you have a dealer who sells that brand and is close enough to do the job. So whenever you visit a brand’s site, the first thing you should do is go to their dealer locator and see who’s nearby. If no one is, move on. person, get in the car and check out the showrooms. Then start the homework. (Time for another shameless Showplace plug: We have hundreds of independent dealers, spread over all 50 states. And almost all of them carry more brands than just us. So any one of them is a great place to start. Find them all on our site. End of plug.) Or you can instead approach from the egg side of the issue, and start by searching up local dealers or showrooms. See what brands they carry, then research them. Most of them will have a website, and will link to the brands they sell, so this can be done easily. If you’re more of a face-time quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer p4 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK How much is that kitchen in the window? So you’ve found some brands that you like with dealers nearby. Your next thought might be “How do I know if this is an expensive brand or a cheap one? Am I looking at Kia or Rolls Royce here?” Good question. Making things more complicated, many brands offer “good-better-best” lines. And within any of those, your total cost can vary a lot depending on the wood you choose, the door style, finish, accents and accessories, and so on. Honestly, a brand’s site offers few clues on this. A high-end brand won’t come right out and say “No way can you afford us.” And a low-end brand can look like a million bucks with some slick photography. And beyond the cabinets, how ambitious (i.e. spendy) is the total project? Tearing out walls? Rerouting plumbing and electrical? New floors? It all adds up and varies over a really wide range. We’re not trying to dodge the cost question. (Showplace prices around the middle of the market, so we have nothing to hide.) The reality is that a new kitchen is a very complex undertaking, and each project is unique. So how do you get even a general idea of the cost? Talk to a good dealer. They do this for a living, and can quickly tell you if your dreams and your budget are in the same ballpark. They can also advise you on which brands cost more or less, and why. click here to see this kitchen... quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer p5 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK How long does all this take? Once you’ve chosen a dealer and a brand, things can get rolling. Your designer will talk to you, get a feel for your tastes and needs, show you ideas, then get started on a design. This can take anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months, mostly depending upon how quickly you make decisions, and how often you change your mind along the way. When a design is finalized, the cabinets are ordered and go into production. With most built-to-order brands (like Showplace) it takes four to six weeks from placement of the order to delivery at the job site. If you’re doing major work like tearing out walls or replacing floors, this is the time to get a head start on that. Your cabinet dealer can help you coordinate everything that needs to happen before your new cabinets arrive. Once the cabinets are delivered, the completion time depends on your contractor and other factors like counter tops, plumbing and lighting that can only go in after the cabinets are installed. Good coordination among various suppliers and installers is critical to a smooth remodel that doesn’t drag on and on. On the simpler side, this process can go quickly. Here’s a case study: A mediumto-small galley kitchen was remodeled using all new cabinets, but on the existing footprint. The contractor removed and hauled away the old cabinets in a day. When these were gone, the homeowners repainted the walls themselves, which was done in a day. Then the installers put the new backsplash and cabinets in, which took another couple days. Finally, the new counter tops were placed and new appliances put in, over a span of about two days. All in all, pretty quick and easy for an entirely new kitchen, in about a week’s time. Click here to see this remodel in progress. And of course, a refacing job can go even quicker than that. Click here to learn about the refacing process. quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer p6 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK click here to see this kitchen... So will a kitchen remodel take over my life? It certainly can, if you let it. Even the most modest remodel means you’ll have no use of the kitchen for at least a week. If your plans are grand, expect much longer. But your remodel doesn’t have to dominate your home life, if you plan ahead. You can set up a temporary kitchen, using portable appliances or an outdoor grill. If your project is going to involve dusty work like tearing out drywall, seal off the work area with plastic sheeting so the dust doesn’t reach other parts of the house. And watch your feet so you don’t track dust and splinters around. Talk with your contractor about where they can and cannot go in the home, and what bathroom they can use. The workers will also need an area where they can do cutting and other dusty dirty noisy stuff, usually the garage. If you have young children in the household, talk to them, too, about where they can and cannot go during the work. This is important for several reasons, quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer not the least of which is the children’s own safety. And remember to take pictures. Once the new kitchen is done, you’ll be glad you have before, during and after shots of the process. A remodel is a big event for any homeowner. WORKBOOK Click on any door style to learn more on ShowplaceWood.com. A door style to fit your style. The door style is the fundamental building block of your cabinetry creation. It sets the tone for everything else that follows. As you can see, our standard overlay door selection is varied and versatile. Every door shown here is available in multiple woods and finishes. Most are available in two overlays (more on that later) and many are offered in special Pendleton Pendleton II rustic and inset versions. WORKBOOK Drawer headers. Most Showplace door styles give you some choices for drawer headers. All styles have a standard header which is usually a slab header with the appropriate edge treatment for the door style. On many styles you can also choose the slant/raised header or an upgrade fivepiece drawer header. On larger drawer openings the five-piece header can have a raised panel. Applied-molding, beaded, and mitered door styles also have upgrade header options appropriate to each style. Sound complicated? It can seem so at first. But this also gives you lots of design freedom. Understanding a door style’s overlay. Most Showplace door styles are offered in two overlays, called Traditional and International+. A few door styles are offered in International+ only. But what does this mean to you? Read on… Traditional overlay International+ overlay “Overlay” (sometimes called “reveal”) refers to the amount of cabinet face frame that is covered by the doors and drawer headers. International+ overlay doors and headers are larger, covering more of the frame. The result is a sleeker, tighter look. Traditional overlay doors and headers are smaller, revealing more of the frame. Since the smaller Traditional styles use less material, they cost less, too. In the end, the overlay decision is one of personal tastes and budgets. Combining styles. The Hillcrest, Oxford and Freeport door styles are designed to be used on wall cabinets and vanities, with Covington or Breckenridge styles used for base cabinets. quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer 10 Hillcrest & Covington Oxford & Covington Freeport & Breckenridge p10 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK click here to see an inset kitchen... Consider the elegant inset door styles. There’s another Showplace option to consider in which the doors and headers don’t “overlay” the frame at all: inset cabinetry. With inset styles, the doors and drawer headers fit inside the cabinet’s frame, even with the face. This creates a very different look that is both historical and really quite elegant. When you select a Showplace inset style, you have some other choices to make: Choose a beaded or flush frame style. Specify a concealed hinge style that is completely hidden for a sleek look. Or select a finial hinge that is partially exposed, as seen at right. Finial hinges are offered in your choice of three distinctive metal finishes. You can also choose between elegant five-piece drawer headers (seen on the doors below) or understated slab drawer headers, shown at right. Click on any door below for full information on each style. WORKBOOK Cherry Our standard woods and finishes. The Showplace standard wood choices present a selection of the most versatile wood species, each in a wide range of standard stains specifically tailored to each species’ natural characteristics. And all Showplace finishes are offered in your choice of satin or matte sheen. (You can click any of the woods shown here for more detail...) Cherry tends toward elegant warm tones, and also darkens considerably as it ages. Cherry has a fine grain that often exhibits swirls and a flowing, random pattern. Cherry’s color varies from nearly white to dark reddish brown. Maple Maple has a fine, uniform grain pattern, and tends toward lighter colorations. Like all woods, maple will darken with age, but to a lesser degree than cherry. Maple takes on a subtle mottled appearance when finished in the darker stains. Hickory Hickory is a heavy, dense wood that displays vibrant grain patterns and wide variation in color. It is the outgoing extrovert of the hardwood family. Lighter stains make this natural variation the most evident, while darker stains tend to mute it. Red Oak Showplace paints are offered on maple and rustic alder, and also on the paint grade wood option, in a versatile range of standard colors. Red Oak is a time-honored favorite that has a prominent, distinctive grain character that may show tiny rays and flowing patterns. Red Oak tends toward warm tones, and is very hard with a high shock resistance. Paint Grade With our paint-grade cabinetry, doors and five-piece drawer headers have a solid fine-grain hardwood frame. Center panels and slab headers are of Medium Density Fibercore (MDF), which is an engineered wood product. quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer p12 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK Charismatic quartersawn white oak. Rustic hickory Rustic alder The comfortable rustics. Quartersawn white oak (below) uses the more difficult and costly quartersawing method to yield material with a distinctive grain pattern and superior stability. Offered in several versions of the popular Pendleton door style, it is the perfect choice for Mission-themed creations. Quartersawn white oak is particularly well suited to hand-wiped Showplace glazing. The quartersawing process makes the wood grain very receptive to the glaze. At the same time, a dark glaze like Ebony accentuates the lovely and distinctive grain patterns that quartersawing creates. Showplace also offers a unique line of coordinating made-to-order furniture inspired by the Mission historical theme. plainsawn quartersawn The Showplace rustic wood choices (above) create home environments with authentic warmth and natural comfort. Rustic woods display visible knots, mineral, and color variation in the door frame and center panel. The size, number and location of these characteristics will naturally vary. Rustic hickory and rustic alder are offered. Showplace rustic woods are available in special versions of our most popular and versatile door styles. The natural, timeworn character of Showplace rustics can be further enhanced with optional glazing and distressing. click here to see a kitchen... click here to see a kitchen... quick links: planning guide | creative guide | reference section | ShowplaceWood.com | find a dealer p13 all contents copyright © 2016 Showplace Wood Products, Inc. WORKBOOK Pick a color, any color... The versatile palette of Showplace painted finishes give the visual impression of a painted surface, but with Showplace lifetime-warranty quality. These finishes are created by a multistep process that includes final topcoating with an oven-baked varnish for superior durability. Seventeen standard paint colors are offered (below). These can be accented with free hand-wiped glazing to create a unique and subtle persona. More than 100 paint/glaze combinations are offered. Like all our finishes, you can specify satin or matte sheen with any Showplace paints. Showplace solid paint finishes are offered on maple and rustic alder. As a lower-cost alternative, Showplace also offers an option called paint grade. With Showplace paint-grade cabinetry, doors and five-piece drawer headers have a solid fine-grain hardwood frame. Center panels and slab headers are of Medium Density Fibercore (MDF), which is an engineered wood product. Face frames and moldings are solid hardwood, and painted end panels are hardwood ply. MDF is used by cabinetry manufacturers of all quality levels because it is more stable than solid hardwood and will not expand and contract with seasonal changes. However, MDF is a material that is not generally discussed as an “all wood” product in our industry. Charcoal and Black.
