the Executive
Director
While the 2012-2013 school year was successful in terms

Located in the heart of Winston-Salem, Sawtooth School
for Visual Art is the premier community art school in the
Piedmont Triad. For the past 67 years, Sawtooth has

started out in our summer art programs as youngsters.
We have students who have gone on to professional
careers in the arts. And we even have former students
who have returned to teach as master craftsmen.
We take great pride in all of these accomplishments and
look towards the future with tremendous excitement as we
continue our tradition of providing high-quality community
arts education for students of all ages and abilities.

Youth Programs: Perhaps the program area with the
greatest impact, our youth classes and workshops target
students from Pre-K to middle school, reaching young
artists during their most impressionable years. Our

Sawtooth School is fortunate to be able to
offer a limited number of scholarships to
families and students who might not

stepped foot inside until hearing about the Art Journaling
Workshop and the scholarship program last year.

on a piece of paper and making them work together.
Donell said he didn’t really know how to play with mixed
media in these ways before coming to Sawtooth. “All I
knew was how to put them on a piece of paper, but I
didn’t know how to make them harmonize,” he explained.

She first found her passion for metals as a student at
Iowa State University, where she started on the Art
Education track—until she saw the metals studio.
The rest, as they say, is history.
She graduated and came to Winston-Salem in 1987,
and the Arts Council pointed her in the direction of
Sawtooth. While Sawtooth didn’t have a metals
position available at the time, the school was looking
for a secretary. “And I happened to have a few
skills,” she quipped.

As luck would have it, the Metals/Glass/Wood
Program Coordinator at the time retired within her
first year. Eager to get back into the metals studio,
Sara jumped at the opportunity to teach others
what she loves most—and hasn’t looked back since.
After all these years, she still has that same passion
for both teaching and metals, and is thrilled to have
a place like Sawtooth where she and others in the
community can learn, share and enjoy the arts.
