Cockrill Middle School Recycle Club Facilitator: Mrs. Wilson Club Leaders: Preston Bowers, Kaylei Shramm CMS Recycle Club: Educators of Energy! This year, our club focused on educating other kids, our community, and our families on the importance of learning about our natural renewable resources, conserving energy, and encouraging one another to make a positive impact in the fight to help mother Earth! Activity 1: Energy Carnival Energy Content Activities: Demonstrated to elementary students through fun and simple games the importance and value of renewable energies, the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energies, and what we can do to conserve energy at home. Student Leadership: 3 groups of middle school students lead different energy game stations. Each game station was set up and directed by that group. All materials for each station were prepared by the student group. Resources: NEED Energy Carnival Energy Carnival Activity 2: Recycling! Energy Content Activities: Our club recycles because we want to reduce landfill build-up, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and create an atmosphere were kids respect their environment. With participation in recycling from the teachers and students we can help change the impact our community has on our natural world. Student Leadership: Our club promotes and encourages others to recycle. During our yearly pep rally, our club members put together a presentation for the teaching staff and student body that explains the benefits of recycling and what items can and cannot be recycled. Resources: Collaboration with IESI Progressive Waste Solutions and the City of McKinney; Progressive Waste Solutions Recycling Guide We love recycling! Playing Energy Bingo Activity 3: Scrapbooking Energy Resources Energy Content Activities: Students researched the pros and cons of each of the renewable and nonrenewable resources, our reliability on each resource, and the impacts of using them in our society today. Students Leadership: Each student group was responsible for collecting research for their assigned resource using the NEED Energy InfoBooks and website to put their scrapbooks together. Resources: NEED Intermediate Energy Infobook, NEED Energy Website Scrapbooking using our NEED Energy Infobooks! Activity 4: Social Media Energy Content Activities: Through social media, students display the importance of recycling, conserving energy, and being eco-friendly. Student Leadership: Students are responsible for keeping the pages updated and keeping others informed. Social media allows us to reach out to a large number of other kids our own age, and others outside of our community. Resources: Twitter, FaceBook, and Instagram. . Our Facebook Page! Recognized by eCycle Best Green Blog Activity 5: Energy Debate Energy Content Activities: We discussed the impacts of using renewable and nonrenewable resources on our ecosystem and economy. Our arguments were put together using data from the NEED website, government websites, and our NEED Energy Infobooks. Student Leadership: Students were responsible for guiding the conversation and being respectful of other students opinions while engaging in arguments. Recycle club members were facilitators of the debate. Resources: NEED Intermediate Energy Infobook Debating Over Ice Cream… Activity 6: Energy Transformation Stations Energy Content Activities: Students learned about energy transformations and the Law of Conservation of Energy while rotating around a number of stations. Students identified which energy transformation was occurring and explained how each transformation conserved energy. Student Leadership: Student leaders were responsible for creating the investigating questions for their assigned station, and facilitating student learning during the activity.
