October 2015
Greetings From the President….
Happy Birthday!
That’s right; Havasu Stitchers turns 23 years old!!! And we have reached our 200th member! WOW! How time
flies when you’re stitchin’.
I cannot say that this last month was just stitchin’. It was more like feeding through a funnel on a windy day.
But here I am, the new President of the Havasu Stitchers. Ready to serve you, the members of this outstanding
guild.
Please read through this newsletter. It is full of all the happenings in the guild. It has a few NEW items that you
will need to pay attention to….look for something about Pennies and Sew By Row. These are new programs
looking for your participation.
It is now FALL and our winter visitors are returning. Welcome back to all of you! And welcome to all our new
members who are beginners and advanced stitchers in the quilting world. We have our upcoming classes , we
have our monthly coffees , we have our committees looking for helpers, we have our new Block of the Month,
and we have our Quilt Show in November. We have quite the activities when you get it all written down!
Volunteerism: the policy or practice of volunteering one's time or talents for charitable, educational, or other
worthwhile activities, especially in one's community. That is the word of the month. We are going to be asking
for committee chairs, board positions, and helpers. We cannot continue to proceed with the same volunteers.
We are currently splitting the job positions in half to accommodate the winter visitors who wish to volunteer. I
say “we” because it is a united front – you and me. Please volunteer. Ask questions of any committee chair
and they will be happy to inform you of what they do and how they do it. You don’t want to volunteer alone?
Grab your friend and split the duties. Don’t know what to volunteer for? Talk with me and I can probably find a
perfect fit for you.
We will be starting our General Membership Meeting on Thursday, October 8 at the Quality Inn on Lake Havasu
Avenue at 6:30 pm. Come a little early to talk with your board members and committee members. Many will
be here early just to visit.
Our Bridge of Friendship XI Quilt Show will be next month. I can’t believe it is here already! Sherri Ashford and
her committee have done a wonderful job of organizing all the details to this event. Please come and enjoy the
event.
Classes – YES we have classes starting! Look inside for a complete list and be sure to sign up at the meeting.
Want to teach a class? Come see me and I will get you on the list.
I can’t wait to see all of you,
Sheri Ahrens
Sew By Row
Block of the Month
Sheri Ahrens
Shirley Johnson
Thanks to everyone who is participating in the Farm
Girl Vintage Block of the Month (BOM). I hope you
enjoy making these blocks as well as the extra little
side projects I’ll be sharing with you.
2015-2016 Sew by Row Chapter Challenge
“Spring Fling”
In the spirit of fun and challenge, the Arizona Quilters Guild is
sponsoring a Sew by Row Challenge to all the Chapters. The
theme of “Spring Fling” may be interpreted in any quilting
medium and style. The individual rows will be displayed at
the Spring Meeting and voted on for best effect. The chapter
with the winning votes will receive an additional $100 MiniGrant for community service projects. All rows will then be
made into completed quilts to be exhibited at the 2017
Arizona Quilters Guild Quilt Show and then auctioned off for
charity. All row patterns will be available to the membership
as a free download after the Spring Meeting.
Listed below are the blocks due in September that
you’ll want to bring and share at the Oct. 8 meeting:
Apron Strings, Page 8
Haystack, Page 38
Milking Day, Page 45, and
Canning Season, Page 17.
Be sure to bring your blocks by the BOM Table at the
meeting and get your tickets for the drawing. I’ll have
a checklist of all participants at the table.
The following blocks assigned for the month of October are due at the November 12 meeting:
Country Crossroads, Page 22
Crops, Page 23
Pie Cherries, Page 54, and
Postage Stamps, Page 57.
The parameters of the challenge are:
 Rows must be 12½ inches high by 36½ inches long.
 The row can be vertical or horizontal.
 Embellishments are acceptable.
 Rows must be completed and turned into the Guild office
by February 29, 2016.
Be sure to pick up a flyer at the BOM Table during
the October meeting which will list some Block of the
Month special project demos coming in the very near
future.
This is a chance to showcase your individual Chapter personalities and skills, in a spirit of fun and competition for a good
cause.
I’m looking forward to another month
of fantastic Farm Girl blocks!
So, this is the challenge that was received at the AQG meeting
last month. I would like to challenge each of you, our members, individually or grouped, to present your row to the
Havasu Stitchers Guild meeting in February 2016. We will
have a deciding vote on which one goes to the AQG.
Sheri Ahrens
Thanks,
Shirley Johnson

Follow these easy steps to make a special place in your sewing room to make a pillow for a furry friend:
l. Set aside a clean container that fits near your cutting table or sewing machine. Place a clean pillowcase inside the
container with the top folded over the outside. As you get
scraps of clean fabric, place it in the pillowcase. Once the
pillowcase is half full or more, pull it out and sew the top
shut. Please no batting, pins, paper, or sharp objects. Bring
the completed pillow to the next meeting and I will take
them to the Humane Society.
2. The size of the scraps can be 5 inch square or smaller.
They fluff up nice and make for a warm spot for the cats
and dogs.
3. You can use your judgment as to how full you fill your
case. The fuller the bag, the fluffier and softer the bed. We
do like to tell the Humane Society that the pillows are washable so keep that in mind when stuffing the cases. A washer won't take too heavy of a pillow.
4. Thank you in advance for helping the animals have a
nice fluffy bed each night. This project also helps us keep
our sewing rooms clean and tidy. It also helps to keep the
fabric scraps out of the landfill a little longer.

A Call For Pennies….
President Sheri Ahrens
PLEASE BRING YOUR PENNIES TO THE NEXT MEETING!
I would like each member to bring in the pennies that are just sitting around your house. The ones in the
bottom of your purse or in the husband's pant pocket. We’ll have a collection bag at each meeting. The pennies will be counted and at the following month's meeting, I will make one announcement telling the total
amount collected from the previous meeting. This will be the only announcement. It will not be repeated in
the Newsletter or written anywhere. It will be up to each of you to remember the amount from each meeting
and add the total up. You might want to write down how much is collected per month also. When the total
reaches a high enough amount, I will ask who has the total amount and what the total for each month
was. The one who comes the closest to the correct number will win the President's surprise gift. The President's surprise gift? This may be a bundle of fat quarters, small tools, or maybe one-half of the pennies collected. You just never know!
