The North at the World Travel Market The holiday season may be at an end but for those who manage local tourism it has just started to get busy. The world convened in London last week to promote their tourist facilities and the Balearic Islands had its very own stand. Both Alcudia and Pollensa sent their own teams. Alcudia’s line-up was made up of representatives from the Town Council and the Association of Hotels in Alcudia-Can Picafort. While there, tourism councillor, Joan Gaspard Vallori, held a series of meetings with travel companies and agencies that were interested in holding events in the town. It was also useful to promote the concept of sports tourism to leading tourist agencies. Meanwhile the Councillor Aguiló, in charge of Promotion of the town, expressed the need to be cautious of high expectations ahead of next season stressing the need to present the town at such international fairs and meetings to ensure it can keep up and stay competitive. Pollensa was keen to present its new website which it launched just before the WTM as well as its new sporttourism package. TOTN met with Liliana Capllonch who is in charge YOUR FREE LOCAL PUBLICATION • NEWS, SPORT, FEATURES AND MUCH MORE 2 Local News Walls of Alcudia need urgent fix The walls of Alcudia are to undergo works due to a possible albeit partial collapse. In one of the entry gates cracks in construction were detected and investigations revealed that they are getting gradually bigger. Although there is no imminent danger, the council requested urgent authorization from the Consell de Mallorca to carry out consolidation works to prevent further damage. The work is now to be undertaken by a specialist firm and must be completed before the end of the year to make way for a larger project currently being drafted, which will see the visitable part of the walls extended. The budget allocated to the work amounts to €50,000 which will be paid entirely by the municipal coffers. Europeos por España Seminar: UK’s EU Referendum The British Government has confirmed that there will be a Referendum some time in 2017 to decide whether Britain will remain in the European Union, or out. Very many British citizens in Mallorca are worried about how this will affect their daily lives here. This concern has been increased somewhat by the recent announcement by Prime Minister David Cameron that there will be “no Norwegian style compromise”. That is to say, there will be no negotiated ‘Part in, part out’ situation. This is a completely new situation, as it is the first time a member state wishes to leave the EU, while there is quite some queue of countries applying to join. As there is little or no real information available at the moment in the UK with regard to the situation of ex-pats, Kate Mentink and her colleagues at Europeos por España decided to investigate and attempt to gather as much information together as possible and present at a seminar, which will be held here in the north. The speakers include Javier Blas, an acknowledged expert on European affairs, and Kate Mentink many heads of departments, as well as other sources. There will also be one or two informed British citizens who will come along and join the debate, including the Daily Bulletin’s Andrew Ede, and consultant James Rieley. The event will be on Tuesday 17th at the Stay Restaurant, see the What’s On pages for more detail. New Tapas Route Launched in Alcudia The first ever ‘Alcudia tasta tapes’ was held last Thursday. It is a new initiative of a group of restaurateurs in Alcudia who are pursuing the proposal of the City of Alcudia. The tapas route was launched with 14 restaurants and cafes, all are publicized on the new posters and leaflets that promote the gastronomy of the town. The route will be held every Thursday (except holidays) from 19:30. T A L K ¡Hola! Sa Bassa Museum Partners with Alcudia Council Last week representatives from the Fundación Yannick i Ben Jackober met officials at Alcudia Town Council to sign an agreement to promote the tourism in the municipality. One result of the agreement is the installation in the Tourist Office in Alcudia of a promotional desk for the museum. The council has also stated its commitment to the Museum of Sa Bassa Blanca, in routes, audio guides and mobile applications. While the museum will enjoy promotion, it will also help show Alcudia’s cultural aspect, that it is a modern and dynamic town with plenty to offer. Donation Made by Alcudia Council After the Fira in Alcudia, all proceeds were gathered and presented to the representatives of the organisation, Un Lazo en Movimiento. In all, €2,120 was raised during the Cooking workshop. The cooking show and tasting was a great success with visitors to the fair and looks set to continue in future fairs. Linda Breevaart of the charity Un Lazo en Movimiento is currently holding Christmas decoration workshops across the island including one in Alcudia. Work Begins in Puerto Pollensa After much hesitation, the work to pedestrianize Puerto Pollensa’s frontline has begun. The road from the Eolo Hotel to C/ Elcano is closed and the bus stop has moved to C/ Roger de Flor just behind the Miguel Capllonch buildings. A lot still needs to be decided, the flow of traffic behind the frontline for a start, but what is known now, buses will not be on the frontline anymore. Instead the council want as much movement for pedestrians on the frontline, there will be only minimal traffic, as little as possible. For now, the taxi stand remains in the same place but when the work moves to the next stage, this may be reconsidered. New Look and Feel for the Fira de Pollensa The XXIV edition of the Craft Fair in Pollensa presents significant developments regarding its aesthetic image. This was announced last week when the mayor, Michel Angel March, the Councillor for Fairs, Liliana Capllonch, and representatives of the Association of Artisans of Pollensa, presented the program, which will be held this weekend. This year the fair will focus on the aesthetics of the Claustre where the fair takes place. Luis Granado, President of the Associations of Artisans, told press that “We changed the elements used in recent years, making it more welcoming, giving importance to both the product and the artisan. We created scenes of craft, which is the motto of this year”. The fair will be inaugurated on Friday 13th at 6pm. The doors will be open on Saturday from 11-2pm and 4-10pm. On Sunday it will be open from 10am-9pm and on Monday, from 10-2pm. See the What’s On pages for highlights of the Fair. As if by magic the North of Mallorca has turned overnight into a quiet peaceful yet gloriously sunny haven. While we’re saying farewell to tourists, those in the planning stages are really busy getting everything ready for next season. Not least in Puerto Pollensa with the work on the pedestrianization actually happening. I’m looking forward to seeing the end results. Keep in touch with pictures of what’s going on here or elsewhere in the north. And we’ll be back on the 10th December - TOTN is once a month in the winter months. Hasta luego! O F T H E 3 N O R T H Police Fiesta of Fairs and Markets, Commerce, Cala San Vicente and Tourism. With the build up to the Fira in Pollensa, this is a busy week for her but she found time to talk to us about the WTM. How did it go? We saw a lot of people, many of whom already know us, they are already interested in our hotels and our town. New deals? In the next couple of weeks we will do a report on the before and after and show what deals were made. We are also seeing more people on our website so we can see that it is growing. So sports tourism? We have many new sports facilities, which are used only in the afternoon, after school. Some hotels ask us if they can use them for their guests for training. We are happy for them to use it, as they are otherwise empty. They have access to them until they get booked by somebody else. But the hotels pay the same price as the general public do and they have to book, just like everybody else. We are also opening the Gola birdwatching centre very soon, and the guide is online on our new website. This could help increase the season into the spring and autumn. We’ll also be going to London Bike and Fitur in Madrid to show what we have to offer. With all this investment, do you have measures in place to check the success? We’ll start seeing results in one year, we’re looking at website numbers we can look but physical visitors it will be a year before we see any results. We have the product, now we have to put it out there and do the work. Now we have everything in place to promote self catering holidays, and show how much the town has to offer. Esra North Celebrates Special invitations had been sent out, special guests were invited and the restaurant and entertainment booked. The 30th Anniversary Celebrations of ESRA North promised to be great event, and nobody was disappointed. Founder members of ESRA North had been invited, and they were joined by former Chairs of ESRA North and current members. Nearly 100 members and guests joined together to celebrate the last 30 years. Restaurant Tango was the chosen location, and excellent food was appreciated by everyone. Members of ESRA North were delighted by the presence of two special guests, Gillian Brion, the On Saturday 7th November Alcudia celebrated the feast of the Guardian Angels, for the local police of the town. The council accompanied the entire body of the local police with their families, as well as retired police officers and widows from the police family. Other officials included the Captain of the Guardia Civil in Inca, the Colonel of Pollensa’s seaplane, a representative of the Army Chief of Pinar, among others. The day included a religious ceremony followed by lunch. by Howard Mullen British Vice Consul for the Balearics and Elaine Brannan the British Vice Consul for Mallorca (pictured with Christine Maynard). The entertainment was provided by The Shake Rattle and Road Show, featuring Denny D and Nicky Marie. ESRA North were lucky to be able to book the duo before their trip to entertain in Scotland. Members of the ESRA North Committee had organized this very successful evening, and ESRA North Membership Secretary, and ESRA North Social Secretary, Brenda and Brian Lowndes had managed to keep their Wedding Anniversary a secret (for most of the evening!) The next big ESRA North event? A big Christmas Bazaar, which will take place on Saturday 21st November from 10am-2p.m. at the Vecinos Rooms in Puerto Pollensa. This event will benefit two charities, ASNIMO The Downs Syndrome Association of The Balearics, and AFAMA, the Association for people with Alzheimer’s. 4 Fira de Pollensa, What’s on this Month? Because there are six different ‘voices’ (I, you, he/she, we, you and they), then there are six different verb endings for each group (AR, ER, IR). Flying mammals © Lovatts Puzzles The Sport of the North Introducing BiciRescue.me A new bicycle rescue and recovery service for cyclists facing a mechanical breakdown was launched last week. We talk to the owner, Gary, to get the lowdown. What inspired you to do it? Firstly, we love cycling in Mallorca and want to do everything we can to make the experience as brilliant as it can be for everyone who comes here. Visitors’ time here is limited and this will get them back on the road asap. Whether it’s a first-time visitor who is a little daunted or an experienced visitor who does not want to spoil a whole day’s cycling with a breakdown. Secondly, I run the Mallorca Cycle Shuttle, which opens up new routes by taking cyclists from one location and drops them in another to cycle back. There was always the worry that one of our cyclists would suffer a mechanical breakdown and it would spoil their day. I had a medical issue 4 months ago, and ended up cycling home when I really should have called an ambulance because I was concerned what was going to happen to my expensive bike. Lastly, I was chatting with a cycling holiday company, and they suggested starting a service like this – it was the final push I needed to make it happen. Are you targeting the service at the less mechanically-inclined specifically? We are not necessarily targeting the less mechanically minded more than the experienced cyclists, but hopefully the availability of this service will offer peace of mind to everyone that they will not be left stranded. Our feeling is that problems can arise that even experienced cyclists cannot deal with and if this happens, the day’s cycling is often over unless they have our cover. Would you say it is a service more for visitors than for residents? The service is available to everyone, but locally based athletes often have a local support network and are able to call a friend to come and take them home or take them to the nearest bike shop so we feel BiciRescue.me will be less appealing for locals than for visitors. We have not yet got as far as offering annual policies for this very reason, but it is something we may do in the future from our ongoing discussions with local clubs. Our website will be available in Spanish and German as well as English. Check out the website at www.bicirescue.me or Facebook.com/BiciRescuMe The prices are very reasonable, is it a money-making venture or for the love of the sport? It is our contribution towards encouraging people to come and explore this wonderful island and we feel that these are the prices that will still hopefully allow us to break even (before 2056!). Overall, it’s a pleasure to help people feel less nervous about venturing far and wide as well as getting everyone back on the road as soon as possible. C Mare Perla 4, Local B Puerto Alcudia T: 971 547 878, M: 607 623 845 12 The Mallorquinista by Charles Nutter Capital Injection The owner of Real Mallorca Utz Claassen is putting everything, including money, into his stated aim to ensure that in its centenary year the club regains its place in La Liga. He has called for amplification in the capital of the club by inviting investors to put in no less than €20 million; if he is to retain overall control then he needs to put up €9 million of his own money. There is no suggestion that he intends to relinquish his power base so he is committing himself to another massive investment. He has reiterated that he wants the club not only to become a top-flight outfit and succeed in the top division but also to become a power in Europe. To that end he has agreed a deal with one of the top European recruiters of players Gerardo Fuentes. Fuentes has numerous contacts with many top clubs and there is expected to be some significant arrivals at the club in the winter transfer window. Undoubtedly head coach Chapi Ferrer will be asking for more firepower. Striker Acuna suffered a serious injury a while ago and is ruled out for the foreseeable future. Another striker Coro is a distinct flop. The big summer arrival Rolando Bianchi has scored once although his effort is faultless and he has endured a series of bad luck/great defending by the opposition. He is still a class act and Chapi will hopefully persevere with him. Winger Arana was injured just seconds after coming on as a substitute in the game at Leganes. He has been diagnosed with a serious muscular problem, which will rule him out of action until after Christmas. Another winger Moutinho who was showing like he could be a useful acquisition has been out for several weeks with a niggling injury. Mallorca will now be scouring the availability lists with the guidance of Fuentes and big names are expected to arrive soon. It promises to be an interesting ride under the stewardship of Herr Claassen. Chapi has sorted out the defensive woes that plagued the club last season and if the team can now score more goals then a rapid rise up the table will be inevitable. Mallorca’s next games are away, Osasuna on 15th November and home to Lugo on Saturday 21st November with a 4pm kick off. Leganes 0-0 Real Mallorca A point away from home is always welcome. This took Mallorca’s recent record to two wins and three draws. This was not pretty. After Arana came on as a substitute he was immediately injured leaving the visitors to play with ten men for the last 15 minutes as all three subs had been used. Win at home and draw away is a recipe for success. Real Mallorca 0-0 Zaragoza Sadly Mallorca couldn’t follow up an away draw with a home win. Chapi persisted with playing a lone striker and it wasn’t enough. A few chances were created although at the end of the day, keeper Wellenreuther preserved a point with two stunning saves. Mallorca is now one point off the relegation zone and yet only four off the play off places.
