Beakin - July 2011 - Big Chicken Chorus
Summer 2011 BCC is Good NeiGhbor By Bill Devine enefiting the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter in Cartersville, the Big Chicken Chorus performed in front of a sold-out audience at the new Clarence Brown Conference Center on June 18. Attendees were delighted with the quality of the performance and the variety of music. Music selection included traditional barbershop, religious, patriotic and comedy. Proceeds of the event will go to the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter in Cartersville. The shelter can accommodate 23 people and is the only facility in Bartow County that Emcee Jay Norton kept provides services to the mood light. adults with children. In addition to a home and a meal, the shelter provides life skills to residents, assisting them in securing employment, managing money, and obtaining needed health care. The ultimate objective is to have people live independently and become productive members of the community. B ... And Has A Whole Lotta Fun! The Big Chicken Chorus, with director Rick Ramsey, sings at the new Clarence Brown Conference Center in Cartersville. The event benefits Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter. A Reflection On The Many Reasons We Sing Barbershop WHY barbershop? any thoughts have gone through my mind as I FROM YOUR pondered the recent passing PRESIDENT, RUFUS MASSEY of our fellow barbershop brother and board member, Charlie Roberts. Charlie in many ways was the epitome of our barbershop fraternity. He clearly seemed to live for singing and the sheer numbers of singers who participated in his memorial service reflect his dedication to them, and to the hobby he loved. This essay is not to eulogize Charlie, who gave so much for so many years to the society, but rather to use his example as a time to reflect on WHY each of us is involved in this unique fraternity. So I ask each of you, WHY do you drive to the rehearsal hall each week, through the heat of summer or the wind and rain in winter? WHY do you show up to sing on nights when you don’t feel like getting out of the easy chair? WHY would you leave the comforts of home and family to meet up with a bunch of M sometimes grumpy men? WHY would you miss the big game on TV just to sing some songs that you’ve sung a hundred times or more before? I submit to you that the ‘WHY’ is very important for you to figure out. Maybe you show up because as you enter the rehearsal hall you are greeted with a handshake and a ‘how have you been’? Could it be that you get a slap on the back and a smile from a good friend who asks you to join in for a tag at break? Maybe you hear the sound of a group warming up as you walk through the door and it has a very familiar, comforting sound? Or maybe it’s just the way you feel after a perfect key change and that ringing overtone at the peak of Precious Lord? Whatever it is that brings you back each week (your personal ‘WHY’) is a critical part of understanding your reason for participating in this unique and rewarding craft. Determine your ‘WHY’ and all the other details of this hobby will become easy for you - guaranteed. So I ask each of you, WHY do you drive to the rehearsal hall each week, through the heat of summer or the wind and rain in winter? WHY do you show up to sing on nights when you don’t feel like getting out of the easy chair? And by the way, congratulations on this 25th anniversary year of the Big Chicken Chorus! PAGE 3 Charlie Roberts We’ll Miss You By Arthur Brause On Saturday June 4, 2011, many of Charlie Robert's friends and family assembled in Norcross to remember and celebrate Charlie’s wonderful life. Included were over 60 Barbershoppers from the area that attended because they knew, loved, and sang with Charlie in the Peachtree Chorus and with the Big Chicken Chorus since 1986. Every Chapter in the Atlanta area was represented and over 50 sang Alleluia and Precious Lord in beautful four-part harmony Charlie was smiling down on us all! Because of on-going Budget problems, Cobb County will not be mowing the medians and shoulders of roads throughout the County as frequently as was done previously! As such, we So Keep Cobb expect you have been seeing more of this overgrown condition on County roads and medians, Beautiful is now because we definitely have! seeking volunteers to assist in this right-of-way maintenance through their Adopt-A-Mile, Adopt-AMedian and Adopt-A-Gateway programs.” PAGE 9 BY RON MAGNUSON, MARIETTA CHAPTER HISTORIAN CHiCkEn nUGGETS ROOSTER BOOSTERS HAvE HElpED SinCE THE BEGinninG As I look for items about the history of the Chorus, “How about all the little extra visual effects added I continue to utilize information contained in chapter by the formidable talents of Billy Shreiner (that newsletters, the Chit…Chat, dating from 1986 would be young Bill). Jack Sweitzer, in The Prez Sez: “There were many key players, but a special “thanks” to a non-Big Chicken (though a real neat chick herself), Joanne McDonald, who, along with half her family, coordinated a superlative tickettaking and ushering job with just a few days’ notice.” In the October 1989 Chit…Chat, Ralph Peckham writes in Asheville Afterthoughts: “As a final afterthought, your Editquarterback would like to express his deep personal appreciation for the wonderful support provided by all the Big Chicken wives and lady friends. When the curtains opened in Asheville, every man on the risers was thrilled and energized by the cheering, pompomwaving Big Chicken ladies.” In July 1989, after International Contest in San Francisco, there is a hint that the formation of the Rooster Boosters in on the horizon. Becki Hine writes, “I don’t know what you guys did to your wives in SAN FRANCISCO, but they sure are excited about supporting the Chrous. Not that they weren’t before, but now it’s more like organized excitement. Rumor has it that DONNA FRENCH will be leader of the pack. We’re all very proud to be BIG CHICKEN CHICKS.” And, in the August 1990 Chit…Chat, the headline states, LADIES AUXILIARY OFFICIALLY BECOMES “THE ROOSTER BOOSTERS”. Donna French writes, “Well, it’s finally happened! We’re official…We’ve had our first meeting and made lots of plans. WE are the ROOSTER BOOSTERS…the long-awaited help the BIG CHICKENS have needed for so long. JULIE PECKHAM came up with the unique name which won out over such popular titles as “CHICKEN WINGS”, LES COQUETTES”, BIG CHICKEN CHICKS”, WING DINGS”, and “CLUCK HENS”. Donna’s enthusiasm is obvious in her article as she indicated she was being called their “FEARLESS LEADER” and was, by unanimous acclamation, I’m sure, named the Charter President. The next Rooster Booster meeting is scheduled for Sept. 12 at Chorus rehearsal. We will discuss the Christmas show and line up volunteers to work as ushers and at the concession stand. Everyone is welcome - See you there! Wives of current members mentioned in the article are Carolyn Cordaro (Ralph), Gayle Freshour (Hal), Virginia McDaniel (Bob), and Joanne McDonald (Joe). Pody Roberts, late wife of recently departed Charlie Roberts, is also listed in the article. The Rooster Boosters continued to receive recognition from the chorus leaders for their activities in support of the chorus, including serving refreshments at practice and a significant role in planning activities and fund raising for chorus trips to contest. Donna served as the Rooster Booster president in 1991. Sharon Howard followed Donna as president in 1992. Gail Freshour served as president in 1993 and Carolyn Cordaro in 1994. There is also evidence that the Boosters tried their hand at singing by serenading the chorus at contest. In October 1992, Jack Sweitzer reports the chorus’ Dixie District’s “Triple Crown”, highlighting the chorus and quartet (Talk of the South) victories and, “The third star of Marietta’s “Triple Crown” goes to the Rooster Boosters, who take all the pressure off singing. What marvelous support. But, they’re singers of renown in their own right, as they serenaded us in typical RB traditions before the contest. Thanks Booster, where would we be without you? There is much more that could be written about the tremendous support the Rooster Boosters provided the chorus. I would like to close, however, with this tribute to Pody Roberts from the December 1993 Chit…Chat. Pody was named the Rooster Booster’s Woman of the Year for 1993. “Pody has served as an officer/chairman of the Rooster Boosters since its inception, as well as being our official “song writer”. Her parodies have amused and inspired the chorus from Savannah to Calgary. Pody, who is a former Sweet Adeline, has been married to lead Charlie Roberts for 44 years.” Our hats are off to the wonderful Rooster Boosters, past and present. We look forward to your continued support. If you have information concerning Rooster Booster activities from the mid-90s to the present, I invite you to send it to me at [email protected]. I will include it in future Chicken Nuggets articles. If you are interested in getting involved in current Rooster Booster activities, contact Amy Slaney at [email protected] for more information.
