July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2011
The New Mexico Museum of Art’s iconic granite fountain
by renowned sculptor Jesús Moroles got a new foundation and water system this year, thanks to a donation from
Blaine Gutermuth in honor of Shirley Gutermuth. Moroles, of
Rockport, Texas, came to the museum to do the work himself
while Gutermuth documented the project in photos and
video. Moroles, a 2008 National Medal of the Arts recipient,
is pictured bottom left. He was assisted by sculptor Candyce
Garrett. Photo by Gilbert Becenti.

MUSEUM OF NEW MEXICO FOUNDATION
Dear Members,
It’s a new year at the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.
With the start of our fiscal year on July 1, we want to take the
opportunity to thank you for your leadership and generosity
in supporting the Museum of New Mexico system during the
past year.
As you know, community support is vital to the health of our
cultural institutions. While the State of New Mexico funds
staff and building operations, private giving provides engaging exhibitions, public programs, education, acquisitions, and
other essential needs that allow us all to experience the best
in art, history, archaeology, and more.
Every page in this special issue of Member News is packed
with examples of the many ways you give. From your
Museum of New Mexico Foundation Chairman Bud Hamilton, left, and
gifts of membership, to your dedicated donations to special

future, “Celebrating Community Support” illustrates how
your efforts put our institutions—and New Mexico—on the
map as international destinations for creativity and cultural excellence.
With this issue, you’ll also notice a few changes to Member News. For your convenience,
our quarterly member magazine comes to you as a stand-alone publication with a
beautiful new design. In future issues, we will continue to bring you the latest updates
from the Foundation. We will also put more emphasis on how your contributions
can strengthen and benefit our museums, monuments, and Office of Archaeological
Studies.
Our cultural institutions will need even more help in the year ahead. But as we celebrate
your recent support, we hope you will take special pride in the difference you make.
We salute you for your continuing leadership and generosity in the cultural community of New Mexico.
With best wishes,
Bud Hamilton

Com mu n it y

t h r o u gh A r t
When George Pelletier graduated
high school in Midland, Texas,
in 1956, a friend gave him a
treasured copy of Paul Horgan’s
book, Great River: The Rio Grande
in North American History.
The Texas native, who had done
a short stint at the New Mexico
Military Institute in Roswell,
had long been charmed by New
Mexico. “Even then, I was fascinated by the countryside and the
history,” Pelletier says. “I remem- Trustee George Pelletier shares a smile with the lifeber my first visit to Santa Fe with sized yellow woman in the lobby of the New Mexico

1950. We stayed at La Fonda, and
we went outside and there was a procession coming out of
the Cathedral and it went down the street. It was magical.”
In 2002, after establishing a successful legal career in Dallas,
the now semi-retired Pelletier moved to Santa Fe. He joined
The Circles as a way to meet others with a passion for New
Mexico history and art.
Pelletier has since recruited numerous new Circles members.
And last summer, he and his partner Jim Hailey, a classic car
collector, opened their home for The Circles’ “Hot Cars, Cool
Houses” tour, one of the season’s most successful art events.
“If somebody comes here to live and wants to meet people
with similar interests, there is no better way than The
Circles,” he says. Likewise, if somebody wants to learn New
Mexico history, the former law professor and associate dean
at Southern Methodist University recommends the New
Mexico History Museum. “The museum has so many educational benefits for everyone,” he says.
Pelletier recently was appointed to the Museum of New
Mexico Foundation Board of Trustees, where perhaps not
so coincidentally, he serves on the Circles' committee.
Ultimately, he says he views his role as a museum supporter
as educational.
“My goal is to get the word out about the museums,” he says.
“I want to use my community service to benefit the arts
because the arts are a crucial benefit to New Mexico.”
To join The Circles, contact Laura Waller at (505) 982-6366 ext. 116

critical art
di alogu e
In June 2010, when David
Eichholtz and Richard Barger
debuted David Richard Contemporary on Lincoln Avenue
in Santa Fe, they had a clear objective for their gallery: to create
an interactive space for gallery
artists, collectors, collaborators,
and the general art community.
One of the first contacts they
made was with the New Mexico David Eichholtz, left, and Richard Barger at the Earth
Museum of Art. Located around Now: American Photographers and the Environment
the corner from the gallery, exhibition of the New Mexico Museum of Art. Photo by
which highlights contemporary Andrew Neighbour.
art by American and international artists from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the museum
is seen by Eichholtz and Barger as a partner in a critical community art dialogue.
“If we can have synergy between our exhibitions and programs and what’s going on at the museum, we can create a
more complete art experience,” Eichholtz says.
Eichholtz and Barger’s support for the museum has included
sponsoring a museum lecture by glass artist Karen LaMonte,
contributing to the opening reception for the museum’s Sole
Mates exhibition, and hosting the museum’s Christmas party.
The pair also joined the Business Council.
David Richard Contemporary focuses on abstraction, but Eichholtz and Barger appreciate the museum’s collection of historic
and contemporary Southwest art.
“We’re fortunate to have a collecting museum because so
many museums don’t collect anymore,” Eichholtz says. “Museums are like infrastructure, just like you need good roads,
you need good cultural infrastructure. It helps local artists, it
helps tourism, it helps the community. Everyone should support that.”

arts education
For Mary Sloane, visual art is a vital means of expression. It paved
the way to her 1979 photography
degree from the University of New
Mexico and to her documentary
film making career.
“Art is the one thing in school
that nobody can say you are doing wrong,” Sloane says. “It’s your
own expression.”
Mary Sloane and Andrew Wallerstein make
a stop on the portal of the Palace of the
Governors. Photo by Andrew Neighbour.
Visual arts education is one reason
Sloane and her husband Andrew
Wallerstein are regular donors to
the Annual Fund. As patron-level museum members, the
couple has given to the fund since moving to Santa Fe
in 2007, increasing their contribution each year. Wallerstein’s investment management firm, Avalon Trust, also
contributed $500 to the Annual Fund and is enrolled in
the Business Council.
Another reason for giving is the couple’s shared love of
the Museum of Art, which they first visited in 1979. The
couple never fail to see the latest exhibitions or introduce
out-of-town guests to the museum.
“The museum tells the art history of our town and state
with a great collection of iconic 20th-century work,”
Wallerstein says. “New Mexico would not be the same
without it.”
Likewise, the couple says, New Mexico students will miss
out on an important part of learning without an introduction to New Mexico art.
“Without private support for education, kids suffer,”
Sloane says.
Wallerstein adds: “With arts funding cut in the schools,
it’s up to us to keep these museums alive and thriving.”
To give to the Annual Fund, contact Bonnie McLeskey at
(505) 982-6366 ext. 113 or [email protected].

The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture
exhibition, Creative Spark! The Life and
Art of Tony Da, inspired great giving
last year by a number of collectors and
other fans who wished to support the
first comprehensive retrospective of
the late artist’s work. Working with
Director Shelby Tisdale and the museum’s Development Team, Foundation
Trustee Leroy Garcia personally invited collectors to contribute works of art
and funding for the exhibition. The
museum’s Friends of Indian Art, which
usually supports museum acquisitions,
instead focused its annual funding on
the exhibition. The outpouring from
Da’s passionate devotees resulted in
nearly $80,000 raised for the show,
which remains on view through
December 21, 2011.

The Legacy Society recognizes donors who have made an estate gift to the
Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Legacy Society members enjoy exclusive gatherings, special recognition, and the satisfaction of making a difference in the future of the museums they love. The Legacy Society was created
in honor of Santa Fe fiber artist Maggy Ryan, who bequeathed a substantial
charitable remainder trust to the Foundation. A planned gift may take the
form of a bequest in a will or living trust, an IRA or retirement account designation, a gift annuity, a charitable trust, or other arrangement.

When Ann Murdy moved to
Santa Fe from Los Angeles in
2003, her real estate broker
welcomed her with a Museum of New Mexico Foundation membership. When
it expired, she renewed. In
the meantime, she became
a devoted Museum of International Folk Art donor, docent, and Friends of Folk Art
member.

legacy gift of her international photographs of cultural events.
From Mexican and Guatemalan markets, to Native
American ceremonials, to scenes from Spanish Market,
Indian Market, and the International Folk Art Market.
Murdy’s colorful reflections on culture will go to the
museum for research, scholarly publications, and other
educational purposes.
“They will be much better off in an institution. They’ll be
preserved for eternity,” Murdy says.
Murdy was intrigued by the museum from her first visit
in 2000. “It was the best I’d ever seen and I thought,
when I move here, I want to become a docent,” she says.
She has since contributed thousands of hours to sharing
her love of the museum with others.
“I want people to get excited to come here, and I want
them to come back,” she says. “Sometimes, after the
tour, people want to give me a tip. I tell them, if you
like what you saw, you should make a donation to the
museum.”

Endowm ent Funds
M a r k e t Va lu e a s of j u n e 3 0 , 2 011
Endowment funds are a cultural legacy and a source of critical annual income for programs, acquisitions, and services at the Museum of New Mexico. Whether adding to the principal investment of an
endowment fund or establishing a named fund, donors who create endowment funds have an enduring
impact on the excellence of our cultural institutions. The funds honor the legacy of the individuals and
organizations who generously established these endowments as a gift to the programs and projects they
love and as a benefit to the community. The Museum of New Mexico Foundation currently manages 28
endowment funds with a market value of nearly $17 million on June 30, 2011.

and loved ones while also supporting the Museum of New Mexico
or the Museum of New Mexico Foundation.
I n Honor of
The Friends of Archaeology demonstrated their enthusiasm for the
Office of Archaeological Studies and
the new, but unfurnished, Center for
New Mexico Archaeology by helping to fund the purchase of builtin shelving, fixtures, steel cabinetry,
compactor storage, and other essential furnishings. Some 100 members
of the group responded to a fundraising appeal, raising about $70,000 for
the center, which will soon serve as
the central facility for archaeological
research, curation, and education in
the state of New Mexico. Photo by

The Albuquerque Community Founda
tion recently put its support behind a
critical
preservation
and
conserva-
tion effort inside the prehistoric Kuaua
Kiva at Coronado State Monument near
Bernalillo. The foundation contributed
$5,000 toward the preservation of Kuaua’s
rare and fragile late 15th-century murals
of a pantheon of Pueblo culture deities.
The foundation gift will fund research
needed for the development of treatments to address the complex process
of pictorial restoration. The project also
includes an innovative pilot study program through which students will work
with project staff in a variety of areas.
When complete, the project will convey
the cultural achievements and lifeways of
prehistoric Native American residents of
the Albuquerque and Bernalillo area. The
Kuaua Kiva draws an estimated 50,000
visitors and 4,000 students each year.
