PREMIUM FLAKE FOOD
Wardley Total Tropical is the ultimate
freshwater flake food, created to
provide an extraordinary diet that
considers not only your fishes health
of today, but their nutritional needs
for tomorrow. Better metabolic
responses, faster attraction to the
food, brilliant color and improved overall health and vitality are only a few of
the benefits of feeding Total Tropical
as your everyday staple food. Total
Tropical begins where all other staple
foods leave off.

water. I found it
does not harm
the fish in any
way, if anything it
would give them
vitamins too.
The vitamins in
the
Vegemite
seem to work
miracles, (don’t
laugh until you try
it “because it
does work”).
Also only make
enough to use
that day. If you
do not use it all
then pour the
excess on your
pot plants, and
they will thrive as
well.
Vegemite
is
a
product
of
Australia. It is a concentrated yeast
extract, and is made by Kraft Foods
Limited (now an American-owned
company – Ed).
Ingredients: yeast extract, salt, mineral salt (508, 509), malt extract, natural color (150), vegetable extract,
thiamine, riboflavin, niacin.

About six months
ago I went to see
a friend in the
hydroponics
industry, to ask
him what they
used to supplement the nutrients, for plants.
He told me they
used a product
called
Superthrive as a vitamin supplement.
As an experiment
I bought the
smallest bottle,
which was 15 mls
and it cost $695.
I took it home
and
when
I
opened the lid,
the
Vegemite
smell hit me. So
as an experiment I used the Superthrive in one tank and in another tank
I used Vegemite. Over the next couple of weeks I started to notice a difference in the plants’ condition. They
were a lot greener and healthier.
The plants and fish in the tank that
the Vegemite was used in were looking better than the other tank. So ever
since I tried it, that is what I am using
twice a week, at a rate of one teaspoon of Vegemite dissolved in 500
mls of warm water, allowed to cool,
then use 1 ml to 4.5 litres of aquarium
(Presumably, Aussiemite would
work just the same. When you have
made your comparison, write it up
and submit the results for publication
here – Ed.)

The May 12, 2000 meeting opened at 8.07 pm with the President in the
chair. He welcomed everyone present. Apologies were received from Daryl
Hutchins, Marty Bell, Lee Ashton, Peter Mander, Danny Genovese and
Heinz Staude. Several members indicated that they had not received their
magazine, due to the late posting. The minutes of the April meeting were
accepted as read on a motion moved by Carl Bentin and seconded by
Scott Haymes. There was no business arising.
New members Peter and Vicki Clarkson and Suzette Khaw were welcomed to the club by the President and presented with their badges and
Handbook etc. Matthew Chaplin, Andrew Payet and Bill Phillips were not
present.

two of the A. heckelii were half the size
of the balzani, and the other two were
nearly as large, the balzani completely
ignored them even when they swam
near the spawning site. If these annoying, precocious young fish approached
the brooding female she would quietly
retire into a distant corner and turn her
back on their cheeky invasion of her
maternal duties; but never did she show
any aggressive or defensive traits. In
the end, however, I removed the male
balzani and the four heckelii, if only to
give her a little peace.

5-7 cm. This large tank gave them
more room to grow and spawn without being crowded.
Up until this time all spawnings
were on large rocks, so I tried an
experiment – burying some small
round stones in the gravel to see if
they would repeat the interesting
behavior that I had observed in the
1970s. Sure enough, the stones
were located and the gravel
cleaned away – the females
seemed to prefer the stone at the
rear of the tank. I feel the second
rock was too exposed in the middle
of the tank for the fish to feel
secure. The only time they
spawned on the large rocks thereafter was when the small stone was
already in use.
On February 13 a spawning
occurred, but the eggs vanished
overnight. February 14, another
spawning occurred. These eggs
were picked up on the 17th and the
female moved off into the rear corner of the tank where she hid
behind a large rock and an Anubias
plant.
February 20 – another female
spawned on the small stone.
February 24 – the first female was

A very unusual thing occurred on
February 26 – for the second time,
two females had spawned together
on the same site. I had happened in
the 45-litre tank as well. Both fish
were guarding and fanning the
eggs in between tiffs (presumably)
as to who should be looking after
them. Things were getting out of
hand as I was running out of rearing
tanks. I have never seen two
females spawn together in any
other cichlid species – these fish
are certainly unique in the cichlid
world. It was very humorous to witness the argy-bargy that it created.
I shifted the larger female on
March 3, as she had won the tussle
over the dual spawning and was
brooding the eggs. Her new abode
was a 46 x 31 x 31 cm tank – again
bare except for a dual sponge filter
which had run in an old tank for
three weeks.
Then disaster struck – 24 hours
later all these fry, numbering
around 120, died. The female was
fine but the bottom of the tank was
littered with tiny bodies.

Gymnogeophagus balzanii – a Treasure Revisited
By Peter Robinson
This fish is undoubtedly one of my
best-loved cichlids. The love affair
began over a quarter-of-a-century
ago, in 1974, after reading an article
about them in `Tropical Fish
Hobbyist’ magazine. The article
described a fish that was unique in
appearance from any cichlid that I
had ever seen or heard of up until
then. It was so intriguing that I desperately wanted to obtain a breeding
pair – but alas, the fish was not available in Australia at the time.
Eventually, I heard that some
balzanii had been imported into
Melbourne and I obtained two fish
which turned out to be a pair. An
account of this was first published in
`The Cichlid Monthly’ in December
1974. Maybe our Editor could dredge
it up again if he thinks it is worth
revisiting. (I could, I do, see page 16
– Ed.) I am not going into all the
breeding details here, this time I am
going to cover some problems that I
encountered.
When I returned to the hobby about
five years ago, I could not locate any
balzanii in the shops at first. But
when Irene Alger retired from fish
breeding she gave her fish to a shop.
I spotted them, but unfortunately the
young fish were badly deformed and
the only ones worth getting were the
breeding females. She had lost her
male and the others did not survive.
12
Eventually the female, who was a fair
age, departed to the Great Fish Tank
in the sky. This looked like the final
act in this futile search and the end of
the species in Australia.
Then on December 13, 1999, I
obtained 10 young fish that looked to
be two males and eight females. You
can not imagine the absolute joy I felt
at finding these fish and having such
a male to female ratio. The fish were
around 2.5-4 cm, but were in very
poor condition. They were placed in a
45-litre, 60-cm tank set up with a few
rocks, driftwood and plenty of plants.
Peter’s “Boofheads”
PHOTO: Peter Robinson
An advertisement was placed in
`TCM’ in the hope that someone
interstate, with a spare male they
might care to part with, would read it.
I also had Ian Robinson in Sydney
looking for them, and a friend in
Queensland also hunting.
Alas, I was disappointed again – no
sign of a male could be found.
The fish appeared to be lost to the
hobby – in Melbourne at least.
Then around two years ago, I spotted three large females in a shop and
I could not resist. I forked out many
dollars to purchase one female. They
were beautiful specimens, but at the
price one was enough as I did not
know if I would be able to find a male.

were fed three times a day to try
to condition them. Disaster struck on
December 15 when one female died
– with a second on the 17th. This was
a big worry – were the fish in such
poor condition that they could not
be conditioned back to good health?
But the feeding regime then saw their
little hollow bellies starting to round
out and their health improved from
there on.
Spawnings commenced around
December 30, although with no success as the mouthfulls vanished.
More disappointment, but not expected as the fish were still not fully
mature.

hatched brineshrimp for the first
week.
A very unusual thing occurred on
February 26 – for the second time,
two females had spawned together
on the same site. I had happened in
the 45-litre tank as well. Both fish
were guarding and fanning the
eggs in between tiffs (presumably)
as to who should be looking after
them. Things were getting out of
hand as I was running out of rearing
tanks. I have never seen two
females spawn together in any
other cichlid species – these fish
are certainly unique in the cichlid
world. It was very humorous to witness the argy-bargy that it created.
I shifted the larger female on
March 3, as she had won the tussle
over the dual spawning and was
brooding the eggs. Her new abode
was a 46 x 31 x 31 cm tank – again
bare except for a dual sponge filter
which had run in an old tank for
three weeks.
Then disaster struck – 24 hours
later all these fry, numbering
around 120, died. The female was
fine but the bottom of the tank was
littered with tiny bodies.

as Geophagus thayeri. And, although
two of the A. heckelii were half the size
of the balzani, and the other two were
nearly as large, the balzani completely
ignored them even when they swam
near the spawning site. If these annoying, precocious young fish approached
the brooding female she would quietly
retire into a distant corner and turn her
back on their cheeky invasion of her
maternal duties; but never did she show
any aggressive or defensive traits. In
the end, however, I removed the male
balzani and the four heckelii, if only to
give her a little peace.

The vitamins in

miracles, (don’t
laugh until you try
it “because it

Also only make

About six months
ago I went to see
a friend in the
hydroponics
industry, to ask
him what they
used to supplement the nutrients, for plants.
He told me they
used a product
called
Superthrive as a vitamin supplement.
As an experiment
I bought the
smallest bottle,
which was 15 mls
and it cost $695.
I took it home
and
when
I
opened the lid,
the
Vegemite
smell hit me. So
as an experiment I used the Superthrive in one tank and in another tank
I used Vegemite. Over the next couple of weeks I started to notice a difference in the plants’ condition. They
were a lot greener and healthier.
The plants and fish in the tank that
the Vegemite was used in were looking better than the other tank. So ever
since I tried it, that is what I am using
twice a week, at a rate of one teaspoon of Vegemite dissolved in 500
mls of warm water, allowed to cool,
then use 1 ml to 4.5 litres of aquarium
(Presumably, Aussiemite would
work just the same. When you have
made your comparison, write it up
and submit the results for publication
here – Ed.)
