July Aspire 2011 - Chamblee First
The Newsletter of Chamblee First United Methodist Church July 2011 Rev. Dr. Royeese Stowe Senior Pastor [email protected] The Perfect Pastor The Perfect Pastor preaches exactly 10 minutes. He condemns sin roundly, but never hurts anyone’s feelings. He works from 8 a.m. until midnight, and is also the church janitor. The Perfect Pastor is always the next town over! If your pastor does not measure up, simply send this notice to six other churches that are tired of their pastor too. Then bundle up your pastor and send him to the church at the top of your list. If everyone cooperates, in one week you will receive 1,643 pastors. One of them should be perfect. Have faith in this letter. One church broke the chain and got its old pastor back in less than three months. The Perfect Pastor makes $40 a week, wears good clothes, drives a good car, buys good books, and donates $30 a week to the church. He is 29 years old and So glad Chamblee isn’t like the Churches in has 40 years worth of experience. Above this article! He smiles all the time with a straight face because he has a sense of humor that keeps him seriously dedicated to his church. He makes 15 home visits a day and is always in his office to be handy when needed. Blessings, R. I say that somewhat tongue and cheek, but at the same time I say it seriously. I have not gone to many annual conferences, but the times I have gone I have enjoyed spending time with other members of the North Georgia Conference and witnessing the mighty work that goes on in our small area of north Georgia. Chamblee, and make sure to congratulate the missions committee for their great work; they have been striving for this award for several years. Congratulations. What a great conference this year was. No greater moment was there than Friday. Not only was it the final day of conference, but it was the day when appointments were set and it became official that Dr. Stowe and I would be returning to Chamblee First. Now that it’s over it’s time for us to gear up for a great summer filled with ministry, and I have the feeling that doing so will not be that difficult. This year there were several special moments. Starting from the beginning, was the Commissioning and Ordination Service the first night. This year several of my friends were ordained, and several others were commissioned. Not only was As always, it is a great joy to serve as your I excited and proud for my friends, this service has associate pastor, and may God bless you all. always been a time for me to remember my calling to serve and lead the church – one that I am both hum- Rev. Another such special moment was when I was privileged to walk on stage with Mr. Richard Hickman and receive the Church of Excellence in Outreach award for 2010. We were one of six churches among over 900 in the conference to receive such an award. Commotion Sunday & Blessing of the Backpacks It is a wonderful tradition in the life of Chamblee First to present a Bible to members or regularly attending children who will be rising into the 3rd grade for the 2011-2012 school year. This year, Commotion Sunday will be Aug. 7th. If you have a child that will be entering the 3rd grade, please send their name to Chris Tench at [email protected] or call the church at 770-457-2525 by July 28th. Please leave the child’s full name or the name you would like written in the Bible that will be presented. As well as presenting Bibles to the rising 3rd grade children, we will be offering a "Blessing of the Backpack" to all children on that Sunday. Have the children bring in their backpacks and each will receive a laminated prayer to place in it. What a great way to start off the new school year! Boy did we Shake It Up here in June for Vacation Bible School! If you have not heard what it was like around here that week, here is what happened: There were an average of 284 children ages 3 years old to 5th grade in church each day. There were 56 adults here to serve as classroom teachers, story tellers, craft teachers, recreation, snack, music, registration, and staff members. The teens stepped up to the challenge and there were at least 38 here each day. Not to be forgotten was the nursery staff and children which had at least 11 kids each day. 401 people was the largest number on the grounds for any one day! Imagine 401 kids and adults learning and singing and shaking things up! How wonderful! It was truly a blessing! Thanks to everyone who made it all happen!
