Ohio River Scenic Byway
Grab a camera and enjoy the views! The river played a
major role in the early development of Lawrenceburg.
Westward moving settlers first came to the region in
the late 1700s by flatboats on the Ohio River. Founded
in 1802, the city quickly became a trading center for
all of southeastern Indiana. The Whitewater Canal,
which was built between 1836 and 1847, spanned a
distance of seventy-six miles stretching northward from
Lawrenceburg to Hagerstown, Indiana.
Looking for a Great HUB-AND-SPOKE Headquarters?
✱Do you visit Cincinnati,
Indianapolis, or Louisville?
✱Do you travel I-275

or I-74 in Southeast Indiana?
✱Have you thought about
traveling Down the Lazy
River along the Ohio River
Scenic Byway?
Begin your visit in the Lawrenceburg Historic District
and enjoy a walk along the Ohio River Levee. View the
river below, where a bustling wharf boat once moored
flatboats and paddle wheelers in the 1800s. In 2002 the
Lawrenceburg Bicentennial Committee commissioned
the levee’s town clock and bell tower, constructed by
Verdin Company of Cincinnati as a Memorial to the
Common Man.

city characteristics. Enjoy a birdseye view of the river
over the town’s steeples from Hillforest Mansion, and a
spectacular valley vista from Veraestau Historic Site.

Indiana countryside, Mt. Tabor Alpaca Farm is a
great destination for groups of all ages! This popular
agritourism spot is home to a large herd of alpacas,
the gentle animals prized for their super-soft
fiber. Somewhat similar to a llama in appearance,
domesticated alpacas are originally from South America
and live in herds. Enjoy a special behind-the-scenes tour
