NEFF’S FLEXIBLE,
REVOLUTIONARY INDUCTION HOB
UNLIMITED CREATIVITY
They offer precision, convenience and safety, giving
free rein to creativity in the kitchen: they are the new
FlexInduction hobs, from Neff, which revolutionise
the world of induction stovetops with an incredibly
innovative, practical, advantageous technology.
As its name suggests, the cooking surface
on the FlexInduction system is entirely flexible in that
absolutely every part of it can be used, an advantage
of great functional value obtained through highly sensitive, ultra-efficient sensors,
which take the form of small coils that create electromagnetic fields only where the cooking
receptacle is placed. This technology extends in different ways to the entire range
of Neff induction hobs, which have been completely revamped with seven new models
measuring between 60 and 90 cm across, with a single or double FlexInduction surface,
and designed either to be set inside an elegant stainless steel frame or to fit flush
with the worktop. The various models now available include the new, revolutionary
FlexInduction T44T97N0 hob, a feature of which is the subdivision of the cooking surface
into three areas: a traditional stovetop at the centre for large receptacles or woks, and a double
FlexInduction surface that can be used in two separate areas or as a single, unlimited cooking
surface on which several pots and pans can be placed simultaneously. In addition, like
all models in the FlexInduction range, the FlexInduction T44T97N0 hob is equipped with
the Powermanagement function
that will also adapt hob
consumption also to a standard
3,2 kW meter. Another feature
is the TwistPad® control,
a removable magnetised
knob that operates all the
functions with a single gesture.
FLEXINDUCTION T44T97N0
Type black glass ceramic induction hob in stainless steel
Number of cooking areas 5 induction cooking areas and an unlimited double FlexInduction
surface that can be used as 2 individual areas or as a single flexible area measuring 760 cm2.

AN EXTRA IDEA
IN A DESIGN BY LUCA FIOCCA, A COMPACT STEEL BLOCK BENEATH
AN OLD VAULTED CEILING FEATURES A PIER-STYLE TABLE FOR ENTERTAINING GUESTS
HARMONY OF CONTRASTS
The apartment of architect Luca Fiocca is on the piano
nobile of a nineteenth-century building in Miggiano,
in the province of Lecce. He himself renovated the place
in a way that respects the existing architectural features
and features a living space in which the kitchen,
which communicates with the reading area, opens up
underneath a magnificent vaulted ceiling in Lecce stone.
The 500-square-metre apartment displays a blend
of traditional and natural materials, alternating rooms
in Lecce stone and traditional plasterwork, doors made
of ancient olive wood, white-painted window frames
and bleached oak floors. The home is organised around
three terraces, and a clear distinction is created
between the daytime and sleeping areas by a curving
corridor formed out of part of one of the terraces.
This corridor leads to the living area, in which
the Convivium kitchen (design Antonio Citterio),
from Arclinea, is the understated feature of a room with
a decidedly convivial atmosphere. The island, consisting
of a steel block containing the working and washing
areas, and a teak table, makes a bold statement
with dominating the space, allowing the architectural
surroundings to “speak” as well. The Up & Down table
is equipped with a mechanism that allows it to be
raised or lowered between heights of 75 and 91 cm;
around it are eight coloured, padded chairs.
There are no wall units, and the oven and fridge-freezer,
in steel, are tucked away in the corners. Another elegant
touch is provided by an old wooden dresser, the ideal
place to store and display crockery and glassware.

trends
by Paola Leone
We often remark that “being” matters much
more than “appearing”, and this saying
can now be applied not just to people but
also to the world of furnishings. Nowadays,
what there “is” is not what “appears”: when
it comes to kitchen and living-room design there
need to be enough cabinets and storage units
to ensure that no piece of technological
equipment or functional item is left on show,
with everything hidden neatly away in storage
systems which, ideally, blend in with their
background so that the kitchen appears
as neutral as possible – austere almost.
The true worth of a kitchen, then, is hidden
away behind a “screen” of beautiful fronts,
concealed behind cabinet doors. Achieving
that effect is not as simple as it may sound.
It is no longer a question of simply creating
a tall unit and putting things in it: today’s
kitchen cabinets are complex storage systems
its strictly minimal design making it ideal
for the main living area in the home, with
the kitchen completely hidden from view.
Only when the big sliding fronts are opened
up and slid away into the sides does the kitchen
appear in all its glory, with everything needed
for cooking, chilling and even cleaning clothes.
Yes, laundries are back in the kitchen,
the latest trend being a fully-fitted out laundry
area, as seen for example at Valcucine’s
Milan showroom at this year’s furniture fair:
Laundry is a dedicated system made up of tall
or low cupboards, for washing machines
and tumble dryers, and washing areas
with wall-mounted base units and resin sink
fitted with removable tilted washboard.
Also the Marina Chic from Febal model
incorporates washing machines, linen baskets
and other accessories (in the Evoluzione
cabinet unit), while Dada’s InDada project
WHAT’S
IN A CABINET
with a wealth of accessories and exquisite
finishes: glass shelves, sliding aluminium
or plywood drawers, wood or leather coverings.
Or they might be built with uprights
and shelves to take any kind of appliance,
including washing machines, or whole kitchen
blocks complete with stovetop and sink.
This is the trend today’s new storage units
are following, as part of very precise kitchen
design projects. Duemilaotto from Boffi,
HighTeak from Salvarani and Autentica
from Effeti derive their character from
the elegance of their surface finishes,
with cabinets designed to contain electrical
appliances of various sizes, utensils, crockery
and extra pull-out work surfaces for food
preparation. The concept is taken beyond that
of storage on Spatia from Arclinea,
8 | ambientecucinaproject | July August 2011 | issue 15
focuses on functional specialisation with special
elements including a laundry, with spaces
in which to stack the washer and dryer,
iron and laundry basket, and also a bistro,
section complete with wine cellar.
Other firms, by contrast, are taking
the traditional dresser as their inspiration
for new kitchen cabinet design. This is the case
with Schiffini’s Key System, which is highly
sophisticated on the inside with birch plywood
storage systems, or Toncelli’s special Cocktail
and Cantina cabinets (Progetto50),
masterpieces of craftsmanship, where bottles,
glasses and utensils are kept in hand-stitched
leather drawers and compartments
and hidden away behind doors decorated
with mosaics made from 2,870 separate
pieces of wood of different kinds.
SPATIA
Antonio Citterio’s stylish response to the question of how
to combine a kitchen with a living area is called Spatia
and is a living-room space that can be rapidly
transformed into a space for cooking. Spatia has islands
and furniture units without appliances, the latter being
concealed in the tall units that have doors which hide
away out of sight into the sides. The version in the
picture, in brown oak and with the so-called Easy Box
handle, comprises the Spatia island storage unit
with Carrara marble worktop and a tabletop cantilevered
out over a U-shaped steel leg. The cooking
and laundry equipment is stored in the tall units.
Fronts - available finishes Brown oak, Nordic oak,
glossy white thermoplastic.
Tops - available finishes stainless steel, Carrara marble.
Cabinetry and functions tall units (with Pocket A fronts
that tuck away into the sides), housing the equipped kitchen,
with a steel worktop and a sink incorporating
a built-in refuse shredder, dishwasher and (above)
wall units with built-in hood.
The tall units can be organised as required with a variety
of functions. The laundry section is equipped with washing
machine, tumble dryer, linen basket and shelf to store powders
and fluids. The Spatia system can also be combined
with a WIC (Walk-In-Closet), which can be equipped
with cooking, laundry and storage facilities.

MARINA CHIC
The new Marina Chic is striking for the sheer quality of its multi-coloured,
multi-material surfaces, ideal for creating “easy living” solutions.
It also features efficient elements such as the modular Evoluzione cupboard,
which can measure as much as 180 cm across, containing
all the appliances, including the washing machine. Marina Chic comes
in an extremely wide choice of finishes and 6 types of handle.
Fronts - available finishes in ennobled chipboard with matt
white finish, or alternatively in grey rosewood with larch finish,
in Marbella cherry with larch finish, in dark oak with larch finish;
in laminate in 24 matt colours, 22 glossy colours and four timber
hues; in glass - with anodised aluminium frame - in screenprinted grey and bronze, in screen-printed Stopsol and painted
black, white, amaranth and silk grey.
Tops - available finishes steel, laminate,
wooden staves, stone, quartz, Staron®, glass.

Cabinetry and functions: the Evoluzione cupboard,
with folding fronts, aluminium frame and glass panel in standard
colours. Inside it is divided by aluminium uprights,
with height-adjustable ennobled chipboard shelves that can be
positioned as required to make room for the washing machine
and other appliances. The photo shows the laundry solution,
with shelves for washing powder and other items. Evoluzione
comes in three widths: 90, 135 and 180 cm and is 71.2 cm deep;
the net height, without plinth and back, is 219 cm.
SISTEMA LAUNDRY
A new sectional system to create laundry areas tailored to individual needs, an elaborate, organised programme
complete with water point and storage elements. The washing area includes an acrylic resin sink, with sloping
washboard and panels to close off the sink, resting on wall-mounted base units and continuing above the unit
containing the washer and dryer, which can be closed off behind an aluminium shutter to reduce the perceived
amount of noise coming from both appliances. Alternatively, a storage area without sink can be designed
with taller cupboard modules closed off by an aluminium shutter. The modules can be sub-divided into a central
area with raised anti-vibration recesses - designed for built-in washing machines and tumble dryers
(ProTex models from AEG Neue Kollektion); the lower area can be fitted with a pull-out wooden surface
and aluminium laundry baskets on wheels. The laundry can also be equipped with other accessories, such as
a cabinet with foldaway, height-adjustable ironing board, sliding shoe cupboard and a closet for sundry storage.
Fronts - available finishes standard Artematica programme finishes: glass (also personalised with the Arte programme),
lacquered and laminated in various colours, textured walnut, textured elm, acrylic resin.

INDADA
The INDada project interprets the complexity
of the contemporary home space
with simple solutions that translate
into a precise composition, dividing
the relevant specialised elements
into four distinct functional areas:
washing-cooking-storage; tall units
for appliances and other specific equipment;
organised walls with open shelving
and wall-mounted storage units;
work islands and pier units.
Fronts - available finishes glossy white lacquerwork, stippled matt lacquerwork
in 24 colours, melamine with aluminium edge in white, Banco white, aluminium;
wall units in limestone white glass, Banco white, amber, grey, lead, aubergine.
Tops - available finishes HPL White, Black, Grey laminate.
Cabinetry and functions “themed” tall units with specific functions
such as bistro, cafeteria, laundry and home office.
In the photo detail, the tall units on the left are equipped as a laundry space
with washer and dryer and, at the side, with linen basket and compartments
where the various detergents and also an iron are kept.
The bistro unit alongside it has a small wine cellar, a vertical wine rack,
and shelves for glasses and other items above.

The stylish look
is created by the
design of the cabinet
fronts, which are
made of teak
and other
quality woods
and materials: HighTeak, designed by
Castiglia Associati,
is Salvarani’s
flagship kitchen.
Its personality
is established by the purity of the fronts (the fingergrip
is built into the upper edge of the door) and by
the continuity of the horizontal composition, an effect
achieved thanks to the alignment of the large base units
and the low wall units. New features include the hood
incorporated into the wall unit, magnetic panels
to which shelves can be attached, new plant-holder
trays and spacious equippable cupboards.
Fronts - available finishes teak, Canaletto walnut, rosewood
and ebony; stippled glossy lacquerwork; Unicolor laminate.
Tops - available finishes Corian®, steel, laminates, marble,
granite, stone, polished, satin-finish or brushed quartz.
Cabinetry and functions cupboards with sliding doors
and vertical chrome-plated handles. The inner teak sections
are organised to contain built-in ovens and the fridge-freezer
and are fitted with wood or steel shelves, steel drawers,
sliding worktops and electrical sockets for small appliances.

AUTENTICA
Autentica, the natural oak kitchen designed by Giancarlo
Vegni, strikes a perfect balance between past and future
and displays a genuine passion for wood and other materials.
The doors feature a fielded panel that protrudes from
the shallower surround, the fingergrip being the hollow between
the two levels. With its alternating open and closed volumes,
Autentica offers a range of special elements, including
open shelving and tall units for the built-in appliances.
Fronts - available finishes natural bleached or ash-coloured oak,
grey or black.
Tops - available finishes Effeti’s standard finishes.
Cabinetry and functions tall units to house appliances or use as storage space. Can be fitted with glass shelves and,
on the inside of the doors, with aluminium trays that double up the usable space inside (handy for storing utensils,
crockery and other items in). The fronts have the same finishes as the rest of the kitchen.

KEY SYSTEM
“We wanted a versatile chameleon-like system,
with a strong personality but also sufficient restraint to
blend in with the kitchens in the Schiffini collections”:
this is how the two designers explain the Key System
project, a set of modular storage units for use
in combination with any model of Schiffini kitchen.
The system is made up of a series of tall units placed
alongside one another with an outer surround
that creates the effect of a free-standing cupboard.
Inside it is fitted with fixed and sliding shelves, pull-out
storage compartments, worktops, drawers and vertical sliding shelves, all made of birch plywood.
Designed also to contain appliances, Key System can be accessed from both sides and is equipped with hinged
and co-planar sliding doors fitted with a self-braking mechanism. The handles can be inset or external.
The fronts are available in Schiffini wood and lacquerwork, in combination with an outer surround.

ADVANCED EXTRACTION
SYSTEMS
by Davide Cattaneo
Choosing the best extraction system depends on your needs and of course also
on the architectural features of the interior space you are going to install it in.
You can opt for unobtrusive solutions that are sleekly incorporated into surfaces
so that they are completely invisible and only come into view when in use.
Or you might want to make a bold statement by introducing a designer hood
- a furnishing feature in its own right that defines the character of the kitchen
as well as serving a number of different functions: in addition to removing fumes and
ensuring a healthy indoor environment, these hoods usually also double as lighting
appliances. Great importance is now also being attached to the material that the body
and outer cladding of the hood are made of: steel and glass are still the most popular
choices because they are safe and sturdy, and also have unique “chromatic
vibrations”, but much use is also being made of new technopolymers,
which can create more fluid forms and surfaces, an be produced in shades
that form part of the kitchen’s overall colour scheme. These design gems also offer
more in the way of performance features. Extraction systems need to come up
to the standards necessary for functionally efficient air management, especially
now that kitchens and living spaces are increasingly being designed as a single
interior space. And a good hood must not produce any noise pollution:
whisper-quiet operation is being viewed more and more as an essential component
of indoor comfort. So extraction systems are coming to rank alongside
all the other electrical appliances in terms of importance, and the new models
that are now appearing demonstrate that they are very much up to the task.
FRANKE > UP&DOWN
Island hood with a sophisticated design and a dual function: it doubles as a chandelier,
turned on by an ordinary light switch. Up&Down is available in two versions: Up&Down Apollo
and Up&Down Jupiter, which are identical in terms of their hood function but different
as lighting appliances (each has its own particular ceiling fixture). It is operated as
a hood by remote control, which lowers the hood to the ideal height for optimum fume extraction.

EXTRACTION THAT’S
OUT OF SIGHT!
The new Adagio and Cloud Nine hoods, from Elica, are two different
“hideaway” models that offer excellent performance features while
reducing their actual presence to a minimum by disappearing out
of sight into the stovetop or false ceiling when not in use.
Adagio is a downdraft hood that
is one of Elica’s classiest models
- and versatile into the bargain: when
not in use it simply slides down into
the hob area, ready to pop up again
with an elegant flourish when needed.
The clean design and total attention
to detail lavished on Adagio combine with a perimeter extraction
method that ensures the room remains absolutely free of cooking
fumes and steam. In addition, neon lighting in the upper part
of the appliance ensures that all cooking is done in the safest
of environments. Adagio is activated by means of an intuitive interface
of touch-sensitive controls on the horizontal surface.
Meanwhile, the Cloud Nine model is designed
- as one might guess from its name for installation in the false ceiling. It too comes and
goes, discreetly disappearing when required to.
Cloud Nine is a high-performance hood that
is ideal for large kitchens, or for those where
a lot of boiling, frying and grilling is the order
of the day. Again, a perimeter extraction system speeds up the removal
of cooking fumes, ensuring that the hood does its job efficiently.
Linear in design, Cloud Nine is made of stainless steel and encased
in an elegant glass housing that conceals the filters from view
and makes cleaning and general maintenance easier.
It comes with a remote control kit whose predictive controls make
it easy and intuitive to ensure everything is kept under control
from a distance.

ASTER CUCINE AMERICAN DESIGNS, ITALIAN STYLE
ASTER CUCINE’S NEW US FLAGSHIP STORE IS HOUSED INSIDE A LARGE
FURNISHING SHOWROOM IN AN ATMOSPHERIC LOFT IN CHELSEA
The appropriately-named loft that is the Urban Homes showroom,
in New York’s Chelsea district, presents actual reconstructions of living
spaces. The Aster Cucine flagship store, which is inside the showroom,
presents the same concept. It was inaugurated in February 2010
in the presence of Mirko Del Prete, executive director of Aster Cucine,
together with well-known designers Matt Berman and Andrew Kotchen
of Workshop/apd, together with chef Trish Sebben-Krupka,
who delighted guests with her creative cuisine. “The Aster Cucine
space, which spreads over 400 square metres, was designed
for the urban New York market and aims to show not just catalogue
products but actual compositions designed for real kitchens,”
say Aster Cucine. As well as Aster Cucine, represented here
by the Trendy, Atelier, Timeline and Avenue models and three versions
of Contempora, Urban Homes presents a wide range of furnishings
for the entire home, in a surface area totalling 4,000 square
metres, and is run by a company with over twenty years of experience
in the furniture and kitchens business. With Aster Cucine, the owners
of Urban Homes are able to present models that are specially designed
for the American public while at the same time offering
all the Italian-style appeal of the firm’s kitchens.

ABITARE IL TEMPO
PARTNERSHIP WITH FEDERMOBILI
SICAM MORE EXHIBITORS
FOR THE 3RD EDITION
Federmobili, the Italian Federation of Furnishing Stores, will be
the strategic partner of Abitare il Tempo, the furnishings fair being held
in Verona (17-19 October 2011) and now organised with a completely
new concept. The agreement covers all aspects of the show: promotion,
training, communication, marketing and events. Thanks to this agreement,
the event aspires to become a convention of the national and international
retail trade, offering opportunities for professional development,
information and trade networking for sales outlets. “The show will present
a spectacular array of examples to imitate, to raise awareness about
a retail system which is sensing an urgent need for change as never
before,” says Stefano Bezzetto, head of design at Abitare il Tempo.
The fair called on the services of two big names in the world of design
- Giulio Cappellini and Paola Navone – to design the communication
format and layout.
à www.abitareiltempo.com
Forecasts for the 3rd edition of SICAM, the international fair
of components and semi-finished products for the furniture industry,
to be held in Pordenone from 19 to 22 October, are looking quite rosy.
Compared with the last edition, which attracted 530 firms (a quarter
of them foreign) and 18,000 visitors (26% from outside Italy):
“Exhibitors pre-registered for the 2011 edition have already exceeded
450, which means that more than 85% of the available space is already
accounted for,” says Carlo Giobbi, who is charge of the event.
This encouraging result must surely be due in no small part to the huge
promotional efforts being made at fairs in countries of most interest
to the sector, including Medex (Teheran, Iran), Delhiwood (New Delhi,
India), Euroshop (Düsseldorf, Germany), MTKT (Kiev, Ukraine) and
FIMMA (Brazil), where a lounge area will facilitate business meetings
among partners of the B2B event.

light on the many functional compositions Del Tongo offers. The Exclusive collection will be represented
by Monos, Plana and Bellavita, designed and built exclusively for the composition of made-to-order kitchens.
Two models from the Open collection complete the product lines being presented: Rodi and Tropea,

MACEF ABITAMI’S
SEPTEMBER DEBUT
SNAIDERO FRENCH TROPHY
FOR OLA20
The new AbitaMi space, which
completes the revamp of the 91st
Macef, the International Home Show
to be held at Fiera Milano in Rho
from 8 to 11 September 2011, takes the form of a trends
workshop. Underscoring the fair’s innovative spirit, the event
will also have a new image, devised and produced
by Alessandro Mendini. The actual exhibition of products
will still be divided into the four major merchandise sectors
(Furnishings and Decoration; Tableware, Silverware
& Kitchen; Gifts, Trade & Big Volume; Bijoux, Gold, Fashion
& Accessories), now joined by the AbitaMi spaces,
in which architects and designers, along with business
people, retailers, journalists, analysts and trendsetters,
will be able to test the best systems produced for the home.
The Ola20 kitchen, designed by Pininfarina, received the Sadecc Trophy
during the Lyon Fair, a French award that brings further confirmation
of its success. This year Snaidero’s Ola20 was also the one that
received most votes from visitors to the fair and as a result won the
trophy for the kitchen furniture category.
ADI ITALO-CHINESE
DESIGN AGREEMENT
FABER
SALES UP 10.8% IN 2010
In Shanghai, in the presence of Italy’s Minister of Public Administration
and Innovation and the Chinese Minister for Science and Technology,
an agreement was signed recently for the creation of an Italo-Chinese
Design and Innovation Centre. Meanwhile in Beijing a Bilateral
Technological Transfer Centre is being set up. The deal is part
of the “strategic partnership” arrangement between Italy and China,
launched 2004; the two centres will serve as platforms to promote
collaboration and partnership in the main growth sectors as well as
the competitiveness of the two countries. The design agreement directly
involves Italy’s Industrial Design Association (ADI) and the so-called Italy
Value Foundation, a body designed to serve the needs of the Ministry
for Economic Development. ADI insisted that protection of intellectual
property rights be included in the agreement as an indispensible
pre-requisite of all joint undertakings.
Extraction hood maker Faber, which is part
of the multinational group Franke, has recorded
a two-figure growth in sales, closing 2010 up 10.8%.
The result, say analysts in the company, is the outcome
of an effective sales strategy, backed up by the
investments made in automation, R&D and professional
growth. For 2011 the Faber group (one of the world’s top
three hood manufacturers)
plants to continue its
programme of investments
in products and lines
in its Italian plants,
with resources exceeding
4 million euros. As far as
strategic consolidation
for development drivers
is concerned, the firm will
continue its staff training
schemes (which in 2010
involved a total investment
of 120,000 euros)
and will continue with its
firm commitment to the development of innovative
products, confirming its Italian base as the hub
of its design and engineering activities. Communication
is also being stepped up, with a revamped website that
aims to offer a better service all its targets (consumers,
opinion leaders, the trade), creating customised content
ranging from a new B2B section to a simulation
programme entitled “find your hood”, along with an extra
news and magazine section, where content from
the company or from other professionals can be accessed.
