In Print Newsletter of The Friends of the Venice Public Library, Inc. October - November 2014 Friend of the Venice Library Shares Her Love of the Library in Time for National Friends of Libraries Week October 19 - 25 In a few short weeks, National Friends of Libraries Week returns to remind us how important this pillar in our community truly is. From October 19 through 25, the Friends of the Venice Library will sponsor daily programs for all ages and interests. Board members will be available throughout the week to share their own experiences as volunteers and donors. We would love to get to know you and talk to you about getting involved. Here's FOVL Board Member Willa Baranowski's experience: I love being a volunteer at the library. The Youth Department is my specialty. My Tuesday mornings give me an opportunity to make friends with young families and read stories to the kids. Making new friends is the best part of volunteering. I leave with a smile on my face and a happy heart. The summer programs in the youth department attracted 2,787 kids. The Friends sponsored four of our programs: Fizz Boom Magic, World of Reptiles (real reptiles, including alligators and turtles), Flag Craft and Music and Fizz Boom Bang Science. Our Summer Reading Club encouraged hundreds of children to keep up with their reading. Did you know that a child who reads just 20 minutes a day will read 3,600 minutes a month, adding up to 1,800,000 words a year? A child who starts to read 20 minutes a day in Kindergarten will have read 60 days by 6th-grade graduation. It is amazing to see the variety of books these kids choose to explore. The Youth Department programs would not be available without the support of the Friends and volunteers who help our children and parents every single day. They are our super heroes. Please join me in thanking them, especially during National Libraries Week. I am looking forward to the new season of Story Time for the little ones and another year of FUN AT THE LIBRARY. Hope to see you on Tuesdays...or any day at the Venice Library! 2014-2015 BOARD OF DIRECTORS National Friends of Libraries Week Schedule of special events PRESIDENT June Lee Reninger Friends 50% off book sale All week long VICE PRESIDENT Nick Magero Women on the Go Monday, October 20 - 2:00 p.m. 2ND VICE PRESIDENT Cindy Hicks TREASURER Brenda Ward SECRETARY Flo Bennett Women on the Go, a support and discussion group for women who want to travel, meets at Venice Library from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. usually every third Monday of the month. This library was opened on October 4, 1965 in an 8,000 square feet building. We have grown a little since then. Please stay tuned for all the events leading up to this milestone. Ann Hall I hope that all of you are aware of the availability of e-books from the Sarasota County Library Manager Library system. All you have to have is a library card and an electronic device, such as a Smartphone, iPad, tablet of any kind and you can download books to read wherever you are. We now have the added ability to download magazines to these same devices and read when we have a moment. The new service is called Flipster and at this time there are about 30 magazines included. The list of magazines available through this service can be found on www.scgov.net/library under “Research Help and More”. For those of you who want to know what author to read next, there is Novelist plus, under the same heading in alphabetical order! You type in the author you like and it will give you other authors who write similar stories or with similar characters. All you have to have is a library card! For more information and also hands-on help, see any staff member at any library in Sarasota County. We are constantly adding new services and hope that you take advantage of them. There is a wonderful season coming up with programs of all sorts. Look at our calendar online or stop in for the monthly one here at the Venice Library. All those programs are possible because of the generosity of the Friends of the Venice Library. Thank you! Genealogically Speaking It has been a quiet summer in genealogy this year, but we expect business to pick up in the fall. But, thanks to a number of generous people, we have some new items in the collection to help in your ancestor hunt. We also have a new face in our genealogy crew. Cindy Smith has joined us for Monday afternoon duty. So, stop by with your questions or just to say hello.
