AYR CURLING CLUB 210 Northumberland St, Ayr, ON, N0B 1E0 www.ayrcurlingclub.ca @ayrcurlingclub; Ayr Curling Club April 2016 Marilynn Carey – September 21, 1941 - March 27 2016 Members of the Ayr Curling Club were shocked and saddened to hear of the sudden passing of our dear life time member Marilynn Carey, who suffered a massive stroke. Marilynn has been an active member for at over 40 years. During her time at the club, Marilynn’s contributions were many and varied. Dave Cleave, one of our adult members, remembers Marilynn helping him when he was a junior curler. She was President of the Ladies Division 1980-81 and later sat on the main board for some years. Marilynn also spearheaded the fundraiser of the annual salad luncheon around 1986. Marilynn was league convener for the Monday afternoon and Inter-City ladies’ league for many years. She and her committee members hosted our Ladies Snowflake Bonspiels for years. In the year 2000 Marilynn wanted to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary with making the Ladies bonspiel a two day event and it was a great success. Marilynn was always our go-to-gal for decorating ideas or improvements to the club. She did her research looking for the best buys. Thanks to Marilynn, we have acquired many new items for our kitchen and the comfortable armchairs we sit on to watch curling. She also acquired the tables that everyone gathers around to enjoy the delicious meals we are famous for. Marilynn’s decorator touch can be seen in the paint colours and flooring choices. She painted and re-cushioned the bench in the front entrance and supplied the window valance. Marilynn donated many of the decorative items in the club. When you pick a book from the used bookshelves and enjoy your read, think of Marilynn. She started this fundraiser including donating the shelving. Every spring she would box up the books to be sold at the annual garage sale and then take any of the unsold books to a venue that could use them. To recognize her many contributions to the club, Marilynn received the Lifetime Membership award in 1999. Whether you are new member or have been a member for many years, the name Marilynn Carey has a familiar sound. We are going to miss her immensely but are so thankful that the Ayr Curling club was blessed with her presence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all her family and friends. (Yeah!) 2nd Annual scotch doubles bonspiel a success On April 2nd & 3rd 32 teams of curlers from as far away as Chicago participated in a scotch doubles bonspiel. Each team played 3 games to seed them into one of 4 events. At the end of the two long days, the team of Damien Villard and John Vibert won the first event playing against members Susan McDonald and Alicia Struke. The second event was won by Sarah Filipchuk and Ryan Murphy. Our very own Chris Lynar and Dan Miller won the third event and the fourth event was won by Liz Armstong and Sylvia Chupka. Pictures of the winners are below. This bonspiel couldn’t have happened without the help of many members. Thanks to Susan McDonald and her sister Nancy Davis who sponsor the bonspiel in honour of their parents Dorothy and Donald Engel. Mike Faw prepped food that could be available all day and evening long. Many club members stepped in to help when the bar needed to be staffed. Finally, a big thanks to David McGinnis who had the vision to create a scotch doubles bonspiel last season. He did an amazing job organizing what was essentially two bonspiels back-to-back.
