RANT
This chamber folk quartet brings together four of Scotland’s finest fiddle players, Jenna and Bethany Reid from
Shetland, Lauren MacColl from the Highlands and (standing in for Sarah-Jane Summers on family leave) the
redoubtable Anna Massie. Using just their fiddles, they weave a rich and vibrant tapestry of melodies, textures, layers
and sounds across a wide repertoire of traditional, modern and self-penned tunes. Also known for their work as
soloists and with bands such as Blazin’ Fiddles, RANT made their collective mark in 2013 with a critically acclaimed
debut album and a string of festival and concert appearances across the UK, Ireland and Scandinavia. Brand new
follow-up release ‘Reverie’ consolidates their reputation as a significant and joyous force in modern Scottish music.

Sarangi Serenade
7.00pm – 7.15pm
Surjit Singh sarangi Surdarshan Singh Chana tabla
Surjit studied vocal music from a very young age, but his passion for the Sarangi
(a bowed, short-necked string instrument from India) led him to the Sarangi maestro,
Pandit Ram Narayan, with whom he studied for 15 years before launching his
acclaimed career. His technical mastery, along with the richness of his musical ideas
and his traditional approach, has won him admiration throughout the world.
Surjit will present the hundred colours of the Sarangi and render various
classical Indian ragas, through this deeply evocative stringed instrument.
Surjit will be accompanied by Surdarshan Singh Chana, a rare tabla
artist who is very much sought after for his Benares style of playing.

Vampyr
(Carl Th. Dreyer/Germany/ 1932/ 73”)
An early Halloween event with one of the greatest horror films of all time. Traveller and explorer of the supernatural,
Allan Gray, arrives at an old inn in a village that is in the thrall of vampiric activity. Limited (and subtitled) dialogue is
secondary to the extraordinary technical effects that create a world of
shadows where all is not as it appears. Dreyer (who also directed The
Passion of Joan of Arc) said that he ‘wanted to create a waking dream on
screen and show that horror is not to be found in the things around us
but in our own subconscious.’
To ease the tension, the evening includes a glass of wine
provided by Geoff Walker Wine Shop and a cheese
platter from Love Cheese.
Tickets £14.00 to include a glass of wine/juice and cheese platter

O'Hooley & Tidow
With a personal invite from Billy Bragg to play at Glastonbury, sessions on
6 Music and Radio 2 and a five star live review and feature in The Guardian,
O’Hooley & Tidow are now regarded as one of English folk’s mightiest
combinations. They will be showcasing material from their new album
‘Shadows’, the follow-up to ground-breaking 2014 release ‘The Hum’
which earned them a place in Mojo’s Top 10 Folk Albums and a Best
Duo nomination in the BBC Folk Awards.
Their originality and skill, inviting comparison with such
celebrated harmony duos as early Simon and Garfunkel
or the iconic Kate and Anna McGarrigle, Belinda and
Heidi’s powerful, deeply moving, and soulful
performances are infused with an honesty and
empathy that will disarm the hardest of hearts.

New Generation Artist, trumpeter and composer Laura
Jurd. Highly active throughout the UK scene, Laura has
developed a formidable reputation as one of the most
creative young musicians to emerge from the UK in

The Battle of the Somme (77” / PG)
Shot on the battlefield over a fortnight by two cameramen, this film
shows the build up to the battle, the battle itself and its immediate
aftermath. It was the first graphic depiction of trench warfare and
although it contains some distressing images the overall impression
given is that the battle was a success. Some 20 million people flocked
to see the film in the first six weeks after it was released in August
1916. The screening of a powerful documentary demonstrated that
cinema going was not just mass entertainment but could also be a
more serious form of communication. Digitally restored by the Imperial War Museum in 2008, The Battle
of the Somme is screened with a contemporary score by Laura Rossi, performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra.
The war memorial in St Margaret’s lists 55 men from the area who died in the First World War, 12 of whom perished
on the Somme. The film will be contextualised with a small exhibition about Walmgate at the time of the Great War.

His improvised music is a cross between

Africa’s most extraordinary
