Event Application Design
The goal of this project was to build an interactive project to be used for an
event of my choice. I chose to design for Rock on the Range, a three day
rock concert event in Columbus, Ohio.
Beginning the Process
Tone Board
To get started, I pulled together some images that give an idea of what the
event is like.
PERSONAS
SCENARIOS
AMY
Amy is a 21-year-old college student living in Indiana.
She likes rock music, especially some of the older bands.
She has always wanted to go to rock on the range, and finally has the time to do it. Although she likes rock music, she
doesn’t know all of the bands that will be there. She wants
to get the full weekend pass and campout at the event to get
the full experience with a few friends.
Amy and her friends got their 3-day passes weeks ahead
of time, along with a campsite. They have been discussing
which bands they want to see. Amy plans on checking out
some of her friends’ favorites bands to get familiar with their
music and hopefully enjoy it as much as the bands she is
looking forward to seeing. She and her friends are just taking
a tent or two, so they are planning who should pack what.
They’ll need to locate their site and camp ground accommodations once the event gets closer.
JOE
Joe is a 45-year-old unmarried man who lives near
Columbus, Ohio (the location of the event.) He is a die-hard
rock and roll guy, and he especially likes metal. He has been
to Rock on the Range before and would really like to take his
girlfriend this year if they can make time. They live close, so
they don’t plan on staying overnight at the event and may
only get tickets for one day.
Joe is still waiting to see if he will be able to have a day off
to attend the event, so he hasn’t yet bought his tickets. He
knows they might sell out, so he might try to find some from
an outside source like craigslist, or even a last minute scalper outside the event just for the day that includes at least one
metal band he is a fan of. He will want to know which day
they are playing and who else will be performing the same
day. He also needs some details about parking and navigating the event.
CHRISTINA
Christina is a 37-year-old HR manager living near Nashville,
TN. Although she has a 17-year-old daughter and a husband,
Christina is always going out and having fun. She has a wide
range in music taste and knows quite a few bands that will be at
Rock on the Range. She will be attending the event for two days
with her sister and another friend. They want to take their camper if possible, but if not they’ll probably look for a hotel nearby.
Her daughter wants to come and bring a friend, too, but Christina isn’t sure if she should let them. She probably will, though,
because she’s cool like that.
Personas and Scenarios
Christina managed to get discounted tickets through connections at work, so she and her friends are set to go for
at least two days with her sister and friend, girls weekend
out! However, she gave in and also allowed her daughter
and a friend to tag along. Now, they just need to figure out
the camping and sleeping arrangements and details asap!
Hopefully sites are still available, otherwise they’ll be looking
for nearby hotels. They may even consider a hotel regardless, if the price for a campsite is steep.
I created three personas and potential situations they might be in regarding
the event in order to give myself some design objectives and criteria.

Low Fidelity Wireframes
I began sketching low fidelity wireframes on sticky notes to explore potential
flows for the application as well basic as visual concepts. Then, I continued
sketching more in depth to get a more solid idea of what the structure could
be like.
