2014 Annual Report - Children`s Museum of Denver
Children’s Museum of Denver 2014 _ Annual Report THE MISSION To create a community where children and their grown-ups learn through play. Dear Friends, In April 2014, the Children’s Museum of Denver took the first step toward an amazing transformation by breaking ground on a major expansion. Remaining at our current location, the NEW Children’s Museum of Denver will become a 9-acre campus complete with indoor and outdoor experiences designed to exercise the brains and bodies of young children. It will be an institution dedicated to giving Colorado’s youngest innovators a safe, inspiring place to launch their lifelong quest for discovery. While we are in the throes of developing this next chapter, we are well aware that future success is dependent upon a thriving present. We invite you to dig into the details of fiscal year 2014 and celebrate not just the future, but the many successes that got us where we are today. Mike Yankovich Sara Carpenter, MD PRESIDENT AND CEO BOARD CHAIR Here’s the scoop on fiscal year 2014: • For the eighth year in a row, we experienced record-breaking attendance, serving more than 359,000 children and grown-ups, further validating our need to grow. • Thanks to a wonderful partnership with Western Dairy Association, we renovated the My Market exhibit and created a space that embraces the farm-to-table concept, giving young shoppers the opportunity to role-play purchasing local foods and preparing meals for their grown-ups. • Designed for children with disabilities and their families, our Family Access Nights and bi-monthly Low-sensory Mornings provided guests the opportunity to enjoy the Museum with limited attendance, lighting and sound adaptations, and specially trained staff. Last year we served 633 children and their families through this very special program. • We were honored to be a recipient of the Association of Children’s Museum’s Promising Practice Award for our plan to research and implement a program providing greatly-reduced admission for families who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. • Provided nearly 15,700 free admissions, bus transportation and memberships to children from low-income elementary schools and childcare centers through our Sponsored Admissions Program. • Opened our doors free to the public the first Tuesday of each month, welcoming 13,582 children and their caregivers, thanks to the generosity of Target. A Groundbreaking Announcement Thanks to an unprecedented gift from the Cydney and Tom Marsico Family Foundation, along with incredibly generous corporations, foundations and individuals, we officially broke ground and began expansion construction on April 8, 2014. When we cut the ribbon in late 2015, we will become the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus, a world-class facility dedicated to dynamic, play-based educational experiences designed specifically for young children. Our bi-monthly themes included Colorful Colorado, Planet Earth, Get Caught Reading, An Apple a Day, Stellar Science and Wide World of Art. • We revamped our early elementary science program, Growing Scientists: Sparking STEM in Early Childhood (formerly G.R.O.W). This collaborative partnership between Children’s Museum of Denver, Butterfly Pavilion and Denver Botanic Gardens is a three-year academic standards-based program that provides interactive science learning experiences for underserved students at Title I schools in Denver Public Schools and Adams 12 Five Star Schools. • We introduced a brand new school program, Kinetic Engineers, which offers students opportunities to investigate force and motion. Working in teams to complete hands-on design challenges, young engineers observe, wonder, ask questions and test out ideas. • We welcomed more than 5,100 Head Start children and their families through the City of Denver’s 5 By 5 Program, which introduces participants to leading cultural facilities free of charge. • We served 14,186 children through educational outreach programs at elementary schools, preschools and Head Start centers throughout the Denver metropolitan area. • 14,720 students were welcomed to the Museum to participate in educational programming and school field trips. Volunteers PROVIDING THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR PROJECTS, PROGRAMS AND EVENTS Over the past year, 957 individuals volunteered 9,774 hours to support our efforts.
