The kids might be enjoying it, but I have had my fill of winter. I know, we are not even close to winter ending. Do you ever feel like every time you go to drive a distance, it seems to snow! My kids have been hoping for a snow day, but won’t get one, because it will add a day to their school year. So, the district will not call for one. Brandon got his report card on Friday. He received all B+’s and one C+. I think he understands how grades work now, this is his first year with letter grades. As for hockey, he will not be going to state this year, his team lost to Green Bay. Maybe next year. Take The Challenge Buy American! Tia has been doing a lot of presentations at school about her trip to China. The teachers are telling each other how good of a speech she gives, that they are all asking her to do one for them. Kenzy can take pride in the fact that she will be going to state this year. She had a shut out game against Green Bay to determine which one of our teams would represent. She has been practicing very hard and very often. When Out and About this weekend, be sure to check out: Antique Spectacular on Friday, February 8th & Saturday, February 9th. Always On Time! 6 42” Ivory Carved Sword Brings an Impressive $5,500 at Chuilli’s Auction Article & Photos by Chuilli’s Auction Service 3350. This exciting sale featured the estate of the late Karl Pilath of Birnamwood, WI. Several unique items crossed the block and prices were strong throughout the day. The highlight of the auction was a 42 inch circa 1950 Chinese ivory carved sword that drew spirited bidding and sold for the high bid of $5,500. Another item that drew a lot of interest was a 28 inch ivory walrus tusk with scrimshaw work by noted Alaskan scrimshaw artist Bob Merry, that sold for a high bid of $2,000. Mr. Pilath enjoyed traveling and had a love for oriental pieces. There were several carved ivory figurines along with contemporary Chinese porcelain. Not being familiar with oriental collectibles Jerry sought the advice of an expert in that field. Walter West of West Wind-West Water was contacted to assist with the identification of the ivory and other select oriental pieces. Walter is a consultant, appraiser, authenticator and lecturer on Oriental antiques. Mr. West’s knowledge and expertise in this field played a major role in the success of this sale. I would highly recommend his service to anyone. Located in Darlington, Wisconsin, Walter can be reached at (608) 776- Several other items also commanded strong prices. A Seiko Melodies in Motion battery operated wall clock sold for an impressive $1,250. A pair of one ounce Chinese gold Panda coins sold for the high bid of $2,000 each. The sale also featured several excellent taxidermy pieces. A moose shoulder mount took top honors, realizing $1,700. Chuilli’s Auction Service has established a reputation for honesty and integrity. Jerry has over thirty years experience in the auction profession and is a certified personal property appraiser with two certifications and continues his studies in appraisal principles and methodology. Dlr AJ Candlewick: The Crystal Line, 3rd Edition Price: $29.99 Myrna Garrison www.schifferbooks.com Book Details ISBN: 9780764341731 Size: 8 1/2" x 11" Illustrations: 506 color & 31 b/w photos Pages: 176 Availability: Nov 2012 Binding: Soft Cover Updated values and text revisions have been made to this popular and thorough guide to Candlewick crystal, one of the most popular lines of glass produced by the Imperial Glass Corporation of Bellaire, Ohio, which was introduced in 1936 and manufactured until the company's closing in 1984. Today this pattern, made in crystal and many lovely colors, attracts avid collectors of fine glassware. In this beautifully photographed and updated book, nearly every item in the crystal line is shown and discussed. The author and her late husband, Bob, carefully researched Imperial's factory records, catalogs, and price lists to assemble extensive background information on these exclusively crystal Candlewick items. Organized in easy-to-use categories, the book covers place settings, serving pieces, sets, and miscellaneous items such as ashtrays, candleholders, compotes, and vases. To further help with identification, some undocumented pieces, reproductions, and similarities are shown as well. Measurements for all of Candlewick's stem and tumbler lines are included. In this new third edition, the primary focus is on updated values that are included in the captions and in an overall price guide organized by mold number. This book is an essential reference for Candlewick collectors and all who enjoy beautiful glass. According to collectors, the photographs are an outstanding feature of the book. A separate companion volume by the authors presents the colored and decorated lines of Candlewick. 18 UPCOMING EVENTS Decoy & Sporting Collectibles Sale & Show Febuary 9 ~ 8-2:30 Tri-County Community Center Edgerton, WI MADISON ANTIQUE & COLLECTIBLE SHOW SUN., FEBRUARY 10th 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM 20 Vendors Knights of Columbus Banquet Hall 5256 Verona Rd. turn at Williamsburg Way, left on Anton Drive MADISON, WI FREE ADMISSION Info: Joan 608-444-0649 FREE Appraisals TABLES $20 Inquiries contact: Mike Neal 920-839-9687 The 41st Annual MILWAUKEE ANTIQUE BOTTLE & ADVERTISING SHOW Bottles, Breweriana, Advertising Douglas County Museum 700 South Main Street Friday, Mar. 1st: 12-6pm Saturday, Mar. 2nd: 8-3pm Presenting Great Americana & Folk Art Dealers Info: 217-253-6250 [email protected] www.rurallifeantiqueshow.com WE SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS! This week long event with the theme Antiques are Green comes at a pivotal time for the antiques trade when public and media interest is heightened by campaigns such as "Antiques are Green" spearheaded by Nigel Worboys and the petition on "Antiques" designed to persuade the British government to provide more support to the Fine Art and Antiques industry. The Association of Collecting Clubs and National Association of Collectors have become supporters of "Antiques are Green." We urge club leaders and partners to visit Nigel Worboys' website: http://www.antiquesaregreen.org for excellent information on the concepts of tying the green movement into antiques and signing up as a supporter. The program has several aims. Some of these include: * Antiques are Green aims to promote antiques as an alternative form of recycling and conserving natural resources. * Antiques are Green aims to encourage existing consumers and attract a new audience who may not have considered buying antiques before. * Antiques are Green aims to encourage businesses and consumers on reducing their carbon footprint, dependency on fossil fuel and becoming greener. * By purchasing, conserving or selling antiques you contribute to these aims. By signing up for "Antiques are Green" you become part of this vision. There is no cost for signing up. * The Windsor Chair - As described on the "Antiques are Green" website, the best way to illustrate why antiques are green is by an example (this can be applied to many different antiques) the humble Windsor chair. The chair parts were made by Advertise Nationally for the Price of Local! Call Auction Action Antique News Today!! The turnings were produced on treadle-operated lathes, then parts were taken on foot to a local workshop to be assembled. From there the completed chairs would be distributed around the country by horse and cart or waterways. The chair saw hard use but is still around today. What a green product and what a life cycle! By buying this chair to use again we have conserved our natural resources and prevented the carbon footprint of another chair being produced, that possibly would come all the way from the Far East. I expect that a new mass produced chair will hit the waste dump long before the antique Windsor chair is sold again at auction, goes to the restorers to be revived and is retailed again for another 40 years use! * By buying antiques and collectibles... and putting them into use, rather than buying a new product, is what "Antiques are Green" is all about. What a wonderful way for collecting clubs, for antique malls, flea markets, shows and auction houses to promote "going green" to younger consumers and buyers. This is another approach for reaching out to the young audience of 20-35 and showing how antiques can be an integral part of their lives while helping the environment all at the same time. * Finding antiques and decorative objects to decorate your living space or work place is a great way to personalize your home or office and make it uniquely yours. Furnishing or redecorating your first apartment or home with old objectives makes economic sense, as well as "green sense." * Vintage clothing... and clothing accessories are currently hot among young adults. We're talking buttons, fabric, jewelry, hats - either to wear or as decoration. Old advertising items and other graphic arts, movie posters and political posters, kitchen items, pottery and glassware, toys, music-related items, old record players and radios, old bottles, even vintage automobiles... the listing is endless, but can all tie in to the Green about Antiques concept. It provides a great way for a lot of collecting clubs to reach out to young adults by encouraging their interest in collecting in one or more of these areas by promoting the "eco-friendly" approach. These are the buyers, investors and collectors of the future. Find ways your club can whet their interest now. As Nigel Worboys references on the "Antiques are Green" website, perhaps antiques is the oldest recycling trade in the world - promoting and marketing antiques and collectibles as "Antiques are Green" only makes sense.
