Summer 2016
W elcome to the Summer and early fall schedule of
events at the Office of Community Recreation. We
are excited to offer you a variety of fun programs and
events during this season in Poquoson.
Enjoy Messick Point
The City of Poquoson
Office of Community
Recreation is now
responsible for managing
boat slip rentals at
Messick Point. Slips are
available to rent for a fee of $100 per month for
pleasure boats and $60 per month for workboats. All
slip renters are required to have proper insurance
on all vessels. To lease a boat slip at Messick Point
please contact the Office of Community Recreation at
868-3580.
If you or your group desires to use the area near the
boat ramps (413 Messick Road) for an event or an
activity, please contact the Office of Community
Recreation. A new breakwater to protect the ramp,
slips and floating piere is now complete. Hopefully this
addition will preserve the area from future storm and
wave action.
Invest in Safety and Lifelong Recreation
This summer as we put our feet in the water, untie our
boats to head out for a day of recreation, or bask in the
sun pool side to relax it becomes important to remind
everyone in our community how important it is to be
vigilant and cautious around the water.
Our City is blessed to have such a wonderful and
serene natural resource to enjoy for all kinds of
recreation. Make water safety a priority while
recreating this summer. Here are some helpful tips for
your family from the American Red Cross:
Swim only in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
Actively supervise kids whenever around the water, even if
lifeguards are present. Teach children to ask permission to
go near water, always. Stay off your phone, and limit conversation. Distractions allow accidents.
Never swim alone. Swim with a buddy.
Picinic Shelter Rentals &
Reservations
The City of Poquoson
Office of Community
Recreation allows for
residents to reserve the
picnic shelter at Municipal Park free of charge. The
shelter is reserved on a first come first serve
basis for residents. To reserve the shelter please call
868-3580. Please note that no water or electrical
service is available at the shelter.
Ensure everyone in your family learns to swim.
Swimming lessons at any age saves lives.
Keep Poquoson Beautiful- Parks Benefit!
Saturday, April 30 several Poquoson parks benefitted
from the volunteer efforts of many as part of the Keep
Poquoson Beautiful event. New mulch was added to
East Messick Playground, attention given to South
Lawson playground area and trees, litter pick-up
completed at Messick Point and Thomas Jefferson Rollins Natural Area (Amory’s Wharf).
Avoid alcohol in and around the water. Alcohol impairs
judgement, balance and coordination and affects swimming
skills.

Never leave children unattended near water, and do not
trust a child’s life to another child.
Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S.
Coast Guard approved life jackets around the water, but do
not rely on life jackets alone.
Always enter bodies of water of unknown depth feet first,
and cautiously.
When boating always wear U.S. Coast Guard approved life
jackets.
Remember no one is “Drownproof.” Aquatic emergencies
can happen for all kinds of reasons.

Directions: From Victory Blvd: Follow the light at Wythe Creek and
Victory. Cross over Wythe Creek at the light. The road becomes Little
Florida Road. Follow Little Florida Road to Cedar Road. Turn Left

Camp will focus on basic basketball skills
and drills for play and fundamental instruction. Camp includes fun games, and shooting
techniques. Space is limited for each session.

Theatre Arts Camp: Whodunnit?
Reach back in time to get a clue!

Times: 1pm—4pm 1 week session
Everyone loves a good mystery, especially
when they get to create it. Build a story, live
on stage, which takes the audience back in
time to watch a classic-style mystery story
play out, from the discovery of clues to the
capture of the suspects. Campers will learn
about improvisation, expression, story-telling
to add or to create mood or feelings. The program will culminate with campers performing
the drama they have created for friends and
family on Friday.

Discover the magic of captaining your own boat and learn the fun of sailing this summer. Everyone can learn to
sail and skills learned can be used and enjoyed for a lifetime.
Join our US Sailing Certified Instructors for camp on the water in Poquoson this summer.
Camp packing list and what to bring provided at Registration. Beginner and Intermediate camps will sail in Sunfish Sail boats. Swim test required. All students must be able to swim 50 yards with & without life jacket as well
as tread water for 5 minutes.

Beginner: This course teaches you to sail. No prior sailing experience required.
Knowledge of boat rigging, basic sailing, water safety & points of sail emphasized.
Campers may attend this course more than once, and those who may have been to
a camp prior for 1 week in other programs also qualify to attend this program as
many skills are practiced & reinforced to grasp the fundamentals. Ages 8-14.
Intermediate: This course continues with sailing fundamentals & allows sailors who have successfully mastered
the beginner course to gain greater independence sailing and skill. Learn more advanced boat handling maneuvers. Prior sailing experience required. Ages 8-14.
Advanced: Recommended for Ages 12 and older; Prior Sailing Experience required. Sailors will learn advanced
racing skills to include trapeze and spinnaker. Sail 420’s.
All campers and guardians will be required to complete liability waiver. Registrants will receive information
about what to wear and what to bring to camp.
Instructors and Ratios: All camp programs will be led by US Sailing Certified Level 1 instructors. Natalie Ross,
Camp Director and head instructor is an experienced sailor. She currently directs and coaches the Poquoson High
School Competition Sailing Team and has been a member of the CNU sailing team for 4 seasons. Courses will not
exceed 10 students per session. Assistant Instructor Andrew Hall is a US Sailing Certified Level 1 instructor. These
2 instructors will lead and direct the program. All instructors are CPR and First Aid certified.
Camp meets daily at determined sites in Poquoson as wind conditions warrant. All ramps are in Poquoson.
Register at Poquoson Office of Community Recreation, 830 Poquoson Avenue. Participant spaces will fill quickly.

Lesson Policies:
1. Registration is taken at
Poquoson Office of Community
Recreation. No call-in registration
is taken and no spots for classes
are held over the phone.
2. Switching from one session to
another: If for some reason you
need to move a child from one
session to another, this must be
done at the Office in person. No
switching is permitted over the
phone and new paperwork must
be completed to do so.
3. Children may only be registered
for one session at a time. Once
the session has completed 1 week
(half through the classes), parents
are encouraged to discuss progress
with your instructor about
re-enrolling for the next session.
4.Class Size: All Level classes are
limited to 10 participants.
5. Refunds are only given in the
event of sickness with a doctor’s
note. However, if space is available children can be moved to an
alternate session. This notification
must be done in person, and must
be given prior to the start of the
first class meeting time. No makeups are given for vacation/sickness
or other absences. If a child misses
the last day of their class, progress
certificates will only be available
up to 5 days following the last
day of class. After that time the

Private Swimming Lessons
For the very beginner or even a more experienced swimmer who would like to improve techniques private swim
lessons provide one-on-one instruction to give the swimmer just what they need. Private lesson teachers are WSI
certified or have in-depth knowledge in competitive swimming techniques and instruction.
Cost per lesson is $25 for 35 minutes, or choose three sessions for $70. Only 1 swimmer per teacher, per 35 minute session. All lessons must be paid in full before considered confirmed. No private instruction is available after
August 20. Lesson times vary and all scheduling is done through the Office of Community Recreation.
Non-resident fees apply ($10 additional fee.) Specific instructor requests are not available.
Sailing Camp- Classes For Big Kids- Adults
Recommended for Novice to Beginners.
Experience the fun of sailing your own boat, while gaining the
the knowledge to become a proficient sailor for basic sailing.
Time each instructional period will be spent rigging and sailing your own
craft, as well as progression to a larger craft as necessary. Instructional periods will
include safety principles, and weather conditions. Gain knowledge of boat rigging,
basic sailing, water safety & points of sail.
All adults will need to have proficient swimming skills.
Class Offered on Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm- till dusk.
Class meets at Messick Point
Dates of Course: July 13, July 20, July 27, and August 3.

Poquoson’s DMV Select
City Hall is home to a DMV Select Office which allows customers to visit the DMV (Virginia’s Division of
Motor Vehicles) in Poquoson to handle vehicle titling, registration transactions and other needs to include
license plates, placards, and driver transcript requests. The Select Office does not handle Driver’s Licenses or
Identification Cards; however, the mobile unit, known as the DMV 2 GO does. As a new service the Select Office now handles boat registration and titling, as well as sells hunting and fishing licenses.
The DMV2GO van visits Poquoson at City Hall, 500 City Hall Avenue, on a regular basis to offer the full array
of DMV services. Hours are 9:00am-4:00pm on the following days:

The recreation youth soccer league is now accepting registrations for the fall season of 2016. All teams are
co-ed. Youngest Players: Those able to participate in the U7 age division must currently be attending
Kindergarten. Those in Pre-K are not eligible to play.
Coaches are usually parent volunteers.
Cost to play is $60.00. Registration is due August 19, 2016
Additional $10.00 for non-residents. $5 sibling discount after first registered player.

any age group, the fees will be refunded. Older age groups typically play games with surrounding military
bases & recreational programs, both in Poquoson and other nearby locations.
If you would like to move a child up into an older age group this must be noted on the form at the time of
registration and a special request form to do so must be completed. Children may only move up into an age
division if they are at the eldest of their current age group. All registrations received after February 19 will be
charged a $15 late fee and placed on a waiting list. There is no guarantee for placement on a team after the
deadline or from the waiting list. To be placed on the waiting list a
completed registration form and a check or credit card

Though we do our best to secure program locations, details, and times, occasionally we must make changes to schedules, times or locations for programs. This can be due to any number of factors, included but not limited to, facility concerns, maintenance, joint scheduling
with the school system or required changes from the initial planning at the time of publication. Enrollment numbers for programs can also
facilitate these changes. If this occurs please be aware that we will make every effort to contact you with the information you have provided
on your registration form. All programs listed within this publication are filled on a first-come, first serve basis, unless noted. Your receipt
is your confirmation. Each program must draw a minimum number of participants or it will be cancelled. The City of Poquoson reserves
the right to cancel, postpone, or combine programs, or change instructors to best provide the program for everyone.
If an activity is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be refunded your total program fees, less credit card transaction fees. Healthy Virginia Lawns Program
Registrations for the Healthy Virginia Lawns fall program are now being accepted. Registration for this
program will get you a visit from a team of Master Gardeners that will measure your lawn, take soil samples
and provide you with a customized lawn care plan to meet your needs. The visits will take place in
September. The cost of the program is $20. Call our office at 890-4940 to register.

LIST OF QUALIFYING HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS ITEMS
Sales Price of $60 or less
The following hurricane preparedness items may be purchased exempt of the sales and use tax during the
combined sales tax holiday, provided that the items have a sales price of $60 or less per item:
Artificial ice, blue ice, ice packs and reusable ice
Batteries (excluding automobile or boat batteries), including
AAA cell, AA cell, C cell, D cell, 6 volt, 9 volt, Cell phone batteries
Any portable, battery-operated or selfpowered light sources including Flashlights, Lanterns, Glow sticks
Tarpaulins, plastic sheeting, plastic drop cloths, and other flexible waterproof sheeting
Bungee cords, rope, and paracords, ground anchor systems or tie down kits
Ratchet straps & Duct tape
Carbon monoxide detectors, Smoke detectors, Fire extinguishers
Gas or diesel fuel tanks or containers, water storage containers, nonelectric food storage coolers
Bottled water, Nonreusable water packets, Manual can openers, portable,

Chain saws and chain saw accessories
Gas-powered chain saws with a selling price of $350 or less and chain saw accessories
with a sales price of $60 or less may be purchased exempt of the sales and use tax
during the combined sales tax holiday. The following is an all-inclusive list of the items
that are deemed “chain saw accessories”:

The City of Poquoson features 87 miles of coastal shoreline, with many secluded coves and inlets. As a paddler’s
paradise for canoes, small craft and kayaks be sure to enjoy the Poquoson Blueway. The City has 5 easily
accessible launches with nearby or close parking. Usage of the ramps is free and open to the public.
The Poquoson River and Back River are accessible around the City and areas abound with coastal wildlife, rich
fishing grounds and numerous seasonal and indigenous birds. Many areas open into the Chesapeake Bay,
making kayak fishing an enjoyable way to explore the Great Marsh.

Remember these safety tips as you paddle:
Always wear a lifejacket.
Know your ability and the demands of the trip.
Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen.
Avoid paddling at night and during unstable weather.
Keep waterways and natural areas clean so others may enjoy their natural beauty.
Remember that tidal waters host an ever-changing
environment, so a good scout report will be essential.

A Bag of TEFAP-USDA Commodity foods will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis to income eligible
households. A short, completely confidential form must be completed. Additionally, a small produce bag will be
available for distribution.
This is a collaborative effort between the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank and our local community groups who

Clean The Bay - Save the Bay Day
Over 30 volunteers particiated in the Save the Bay
Clean-up day at Messick Point on June 4. Boy Scouts, club
leaders and various active community volunteers helped
clean the shoreline and coastal areas around Messick Point.
