One or the neighbors commented, “We enjoyed reading the article about Fez Zafar in the latest edition of Country Club magazine. He sounds like a very caring and intelligent young man and we decided to donate to his educational charity for kids in need in Pakistan. The story was very inspiring.” Articles like the one about Mr. Zafar and the positive feedback I often receive are what makes Country Club Life unique in the marketplace today. The content is personal, intimate, but moreover…relevant. The publication helps make the neighborhood part of the community, so keep on sending me articles about your travels, family, favorite recipes, pets, etc… It is enjoyable to learn about what’s happening with the neighbors. www.n2pub.com here Advertise Designing Beautiful Landscapes for Central Iowa As you know it’s October and that brings out the trick-or-treaters on Halloween…or as many commonly say, Beggars’ Night. However you say it or celebrate it, make sure to have fun and be safe crossing the street. I will be sure to take pictures of some of the many costumes kids (and adults alike) will be wearing. Well that about does it for now. Until next month, have a safe and productive October! Sincerely, Thomas F. Our garage doors were in serious need of a facelift. They looked faded and worn out, the only issue was they were in great condition. We looked around at several garage door companies and contemplated replacing them, but what a waste of perfectly good doors! For months we agonized whether to replace the steel doors or just live with them the way they were. I even secretly wished the kids would throw a ball or ride their scooter or bike into them and make a huge dent, so we would have the decision made for us. No such luck… Finally, I decided to give them a make-over. I am so happy I did, I just wish we would have done it months ago! Now, would be the time the kids will ride their scooters into the doors damaging them…. Wash down your garage doors with dish soap and water and make sure any grease and dirt are removed. Following the manufacturer’s instructions use a Bondo product to fill in any dents in the trim or the garage doors and sand until smooth. Next paint on a good all purpose exterior primer from your local home improvement store coating the door and any trim you want painted well. Let this dry over night. The next day, roll on two coats of exterior paint color or a coordinating color to your house and let that also dry over night. The final step is my favorite, adding garage door hardware. Measure and install the handles and straps. The make-over is complete, it easily took 10 years off my doors… Now if I could only take 10 years off my face! Happy Renovating! Paula Schnoor-Comes [email protected] NeighborhoodNews October Country Club Life Molly’s Musings How many times have you been hit up on behalf of a charitable organization? It may be more than you think. With the dawn of the age of technology, charities are evolving and adapting to this new world of social media and global connectedness. Years ago, you may have been encouraged to dole out your dough just a few times a year: trick-or-treat for UNICEF, neighbor kids running charity miles for money, card tables set up outside the grocery store that are easily passed up, office competitions for charity, etc. Yes, charitable contributions came up on occasion, but they didn’t necessarily bombard one’s daily life. With growing communication and technology, those times have changed—with good reason. If anyone has ever been a door-to-door salesperson, life can be tough at times. Knocking on doors asking for money very rarely yields a profit, and that is when goods are exchanged for currency. When knocking on doors in search of charitable donations, the responses can frequently be a door that just never opens. Charities can’t flourish in a world full of closed doors—so they evolved. Nowadays, it is tough to check out of the grocery store, pharmacy, or movie theater without the credit card reader or the clerk asking if you would like to donate one, five, or ten dollars to a charitable cause. You can’t really shut a door on that. 11 A Resident’s Perspective: Let’s Chat about Charity You’ll probably notice more and more items doused in pink for October as breast cancer awareness month. This is also a more common trend: everyday items colored or decorated in support of any given cause. You might opt to buy a pink hand mixer for breast cancer research or go for the purple cell phone charger to help out epilepsy awareness— this is the charity’s way of making capitalism work for them, and it’s working! The most recent charity fad blazing its trail is the ALS ice bucket challenge. You have probably seen the many videos on different social media sites showing individuals challenging themselves and others to donate to an organization supporting the research and awareness for Lou Gehrig’s disease. This brilliant donation campaign has received over 5.5 million dollars to its national office since July 29, compared to $32,000 in the same period last year for ALS research and awareness by challenging people to either donate money to the organization or video themselves dumping a bucket of ice water on themselves. It is a fun, interactive charity challenge that is clearly working to help raise money and awareness for ALS. With so many ways charities are evolving and gleaning donations for their causes, the world is hopefully on its way to a better place. However—yes, I said “however” when it comes to charity (hold your gasps momen- tarily)—all these appeals for your charitable donations are not required to be met! I know it sounds like an obvious truth, but many people feel obligated to donate to every cause that crosses their paths and endure deep guilt and shame if they are unable or unwilling. I think charity works best when the givers have their hearts and minds in the right place. Donating when one does not have the means or doing it to avoid feeling guilty may result in a small one-time donation to various organizations, but if an individual has a cause that is close to his or her heart those donations become lifelong contributions. So, thank you to my brother for nominating me for the ALS ice bucket challenge. I truly appreciate the nomination and respectfully decline. The ALS Association is a wonderful organization fighting against a terrible diseases, but I choose to donate to the cause that is very close to my heart: the American Cancer Society in memory of my late father. Now, I challenge all of you. You, the reader. I challenge you to donate your time, energy, or money if you so choose to any charity that calls to you. For example, I recently read about a great one in our own neighborhood to help children read. After all, the spirit of October has been a charitable one for many years—why else do you have dozens of kids knocking on your door looking for candy donations each year? 12 NeighborhoodNews Country Club Life October October Country Club Life 2 s d i k kids NeighborhoodNews Resident Recipe By B. By Neil Shultz - Country Club Resident Interesting Facts… Did you ever wonder where some of our most well traveled streets got their names? His remains are buried on the Statehouse Lawn. Merle Hay Road – Merle Hay was the first Iowan killed in action in World War I. Fleur Drive - Similarly, Fleur Drive was named for Captain Edward Fleur, a Des Moines soldier who was killed in France in 1918. Well…Did you know... Grand Avenue - Still one the grandest of Des Moines streets, lined with mansions and trees, Grand Avenue was formerly known as Sycamore Street on the east side and Greenwood Avenue west of downtown. In 1887 the entire stretch was renamed Grand Avenue. Ingersoll Avenue – Named for Ebenezer Jared Ingersoll, an Easterner who came to Des Moines and founded the Hawkeye Insurance Company. He also had extensive farm holdings. Hubbell Avenue – This street’s official name is Avenue Frederick M. Hubbell, in honor of Frederick Hubbell, founder of Equitable of Iowa and prominent Des Moines businessman and citizen of the late nineteenth century. Scott Avenue - Wilson Alexander Scott was an early ferry operator in Des Moines. Bell Avenue – Named for Hill B. Bell, president of Drake University in the early 1900's. MacVicar Freeway – Named for John MacVicar, who served as mayor of Des Moines from 1916-1918, as well as for his son, also called John MacVicar, who was mayor in 1928. Watrous Avenue – Charles Leach Watrous moved to Des Moines in 1869, bought twenty acres of land on Southwest Ninth Street and opened a nursery. He later expanded to 145 acres and was one of the state’s pioneer nurserymen. Hickman Road – Possibly named for G.W. Hickman, a pioneer who came to Des Moines in 1848 and resided at Thirty-Fifth and Hickman for many years. Kingman Boulevard – Named for Albert S. Kingman, a pioneer farm investor who owned 120 acres of land on the west side of Des Moines. As the city grew, he sold up to forty acres of his land for $1,000 per acre. Brattleboro Avenue – This area of Des Moines was developed by a group of businessmen who called themselves the Vermont Syndicate. They used names of Vermont cities for street names in their development. Brattleboro is named for Brattleboro, Vermont, which in turn was named for William Brattle, a militiaman in the Revolutionary War. Thomas Beck Road – Thomas Beck was an early businessman of the city who had extensive coal mine holdings in Des Moines. What is now Thomas Beck Road leads to the site of one of the old mines near MacRae Park. John Lynde Road – It is not known for which of two John Lyndes, father and son, this street is named. An article in the Des Moines Register, however, quotes a descendant of the family as saying that the name should be pronounced “John Lined” and not “Lind.” Waterbury Road – Frank C. Waterbury was president of the Waterbury Chemical of Des Moines. Much of the company’s income was based on the manufacture and sale of cod liver oil. Presidential Street Names – A number of Des Moines streets honor presidents of the United States, including: Harrison, Wilson, Lincoln, Washington, Arthur, McKinley, Garfield, Buchanan, Adams, Monroe, Jackson, and Harding (renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway in December 1992.) The vulnerability of this area to outside invaders throughout history has been both a blessing and a curse, bringing with the turmoil unique external influences and inspirations. The capital city of New Delhi, with its mix of four major religions, 7 reigns of power and 2500 years of history, is a prime example of coexisting realities. Wind your way through Old Delhi and be surrounded by remnants of the Mughal Empire, including the largest mosque in India, the Jama Masjid, and Humayun’s Tomb, a 16th century landmark of breathtaking Mughal architecture that would later be echoed in the Taj Mahal. New Delhi is almost a different world with its imperial architecture and broad stately boulevards. Colonial influence is abundant since the British declared Delhi the capital during their rule. The Taj Mahal is also in the north, about 200 kilometers from Delhi. This is the most iconic demonstration of Mughal construction and should not be missed. A Light into the Heartland: Travel India’s South Travel to the more culturally homogenous south of India and witness thousands of years of the caste system still in practice despite the more modern structure of India’s government. With its alluring tales of trade and independence, Goa is one of the most popular destinations along the Indian coastline. Among Goa’s ancient ruins stands the Vittala Temple, a monumental tribute to the capital city of the primeval Vijayangara Empire. Most notable are the temple’s musical pillars that represent different musical instruments. Goa’s intricate architecture and independent culture are also products of 450 years of Portuguese colonial rule. In the south, the traveler will also encounter a plethora of biodiversity and protected wilderness areas. The Western Ghats Range is classified as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots where Silent Valley National Park protects India’s last tract of virgin tropical evergreen forest. When to Travel to India Despite the gargantuan size of this subcontinent, there are distinct seasons during which travel anywhere in the country can be extraordinarily uncomfortable and stressful. From April to October, temperatures soar above 90F (45C) and humidity escalates to unbearable levels. October also marks the end of the monsoon season during which the southern and coastal regions are plagued with torrential downpour. The rest of the year is very pleasant and mild with consistently warm weather in the south and rather chilly evenings in the north between December and February. 20 NeighborhoodNews Country Club Life October October LO C A L E V E N TS Greenwood Market Where: Merle Hay Mall, 3800 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines, IA When: 4:30pm-8:30pm Come out and find the finest local purveyors and producers of local goods. With a warm, hickory baritone that balances strength with a gentle concern, he draws his listener into the intimate world of an old friend, someone who cares deeply about you and the quality of your life...and who always offers a hand when you need it. Reflections yields Williams at his finest, with his classic, often-copied-but-never-duplicated baritone front and center. It’s this style that has made Don a ballad vocal model for performers ranging from Eric Clapton to Keith Urban. With a healthy touring schedule and his second album in two years, Williams works hard to maintain that voice beloved by so many.
