Jeannie & Jimmy Cheatham *…and if blues is her sadness, then blues is her cure. Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin *Blues is sufferin’ music. Martin Banks *Blues music was (and is) the lament, the comment, often mocking or ironic, of the solitary individual, bereft of the support of tribe or close-knit society, facing alone, on personal terms, a hostile or indifferent world. Daniel Kingman *The blues, as a musical tradition and cultural institution, is many things, but more than anything else, the blues is about resilience. That the lone cries of slaves in chains survived to bloom into what we know as the Blues is an amazing feat of individual and collective fortitude. Whether it’s Cassandra Wilson or Koko Taylor pouring out the song on stage, the blues singer is the embodiment of strength, one who survived the torments of which she sings. And when BB King or Buddy Guy sings the blues with his voice and his guitar, he’s the man who has survived the pain of living. The song is proof. Christopher Hess *How do you become a millionaire playing the blues? Start with two million! Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin *I’m not doing this because my father was blues musician. I’m doing this because I fell in love with this music as a child. I never thought it would be my mission. Blues music is my roots music. I love it so much that I want to see blues evolve and grow. Whereas so many people are offended when you call them a blues singer, I want to be called a blues singer all my life. Some people see it as a limitation on what you can do. But I don’t think that. Being called that doesn’t limit what I can do. I never limit myself. I’m a professional at bending the blues and not breaking it. Shemekia Copeland *I’m in no mood to get myself together, I feel so bad I don’t want to feel better. Reba Russell *The Blues come out of my life experience: the hard times, the lonely times, the poor times. “Cadillac” Jon Nolden *As we Baby Boomers find ourselves going into the final turn on the racetrack, we realize that ultimately “What does it all mean?” often comes down to “Yard Sale or Craig’s List?” Rev Billy C. Wirtz *I sought my father in the world of the black musician, because it contained wisdom, experience, sadness and loneliness. I was not ever interested in the music of boys. From my youngest years, I was interested in the music of men. I am and always will be a blues guitarist. Eric Clapton *I got a bad, bad feeling my baby don’t live here no more...but that’s alright I still got my guitar. Jimi Hendrix (from Red House) *I’ve always felt that blues, rock ‘n’ roll and country are just about a beat apart. Waylon Jennings Volume 42 Page 3 Mark Barnes and Casa Morningside Event by Patti Gamble I recently had the honor and privilege to attend my second Casa Morningside Event at the home of Mr. Mark Barnes who is a Blues Alliance supporter and member. This was a fabulous, by invitation, covered dish party with some of the best food, desserts and drinks. The home was decorated beautifully and there were numerous award plaques for Mark’s music displayed on the walls. I brought a friend with me, Liesel Zaremba, my neighbor and Blues Alliance member who loves concerts and all types of music. She was delighted to spend a Sunday at this fabulous event. We were serenaded if you like, by Marks lovely music on various equipment and a huge Korg keyboard sitting in the center of his home. Mark’s selections included, To The Edge of the World, Still Waters, my First Snowfall, Coming Home, The Holly and the Ivy, Do You Hear what I Hear, Magnificent Day A Rose in Barnsley, Unconditional, Through These Eyes, Gabby’s Song written for (House of Representatives) Gabrielle Giffords, Learning to Dream, An Angels Farewell, Prelude to angels, Siren’s Song and Aztec Calling. Mark’s music is also background for the video, Visit Port Saint Lucie. The music was relaxing, mesmerizing and we were spell-bound with its beauty. The music, written by Mark was soulful and full of heart and feeling. We loved it! Mark’s next CD, “Timeless Journey” is set to be out for sale on April 19th, his birthday, 2013. If you would like to purchase from Mark you may reach him at [email protected].
