The Battery Bikeway Gardens Phase I
The Battery: Moving Forward
Cutty McGill
President’s Message
How to define 2014…numbers
on this page tell the story. The
Battery’s outstanding designs
are becoming lasting assets
to a park that has served New
Yorkers for centuries, and will
continue to serve residents,
workers and visitors for centuries to come. By yearend we will open the first section of The Battery
Bikeway with expanded pedestrian sidewalks and
seating, a rebuilt comfort station, and
The Battery Oval—totaling seven acres, a quarter
of the park!
Tiffany & Co. Foundation
Woodland Gardens
Within this transformation are two new gardens
designed by Piet Oudolf, The Battery’s horticultural
master planner. The Tiffany & Co. Foundation
Woodland Gardens will surround the SeaGlass
Carousel opening in spring 2015. And The
Battery Bikeway Gardens, unique to the park, will
showcase trees and shrubs including native fringe
trees, dogwoods, redbuds, magnolia, and 30 shrub
varieties. These gardens mark the full realization
of Piet’s vision—in his own words, “My complete
vocabulary of plants, grasses, and shrubs will be
presented at The Battery.”
This profusion of flowering and scented beauty will
link to the park’s new signature landscape,
The Battery Oval—a three-acre lawn. With capacity
to seat 5,000 people, The Battery Oval will be
Downtown’s meeting place to relax, picnic, nap, or
enjoy a concert, film, or cultural performance. The
Oval will be populated with the Fleurt—winner of
our international design competition for a moveable
Battery Chair. Fleurt’s innovative design offers
visitors the freedom to sit where they choose.
Thank you, our friend and donor, for your role
in realizing our comprehensive master plan.
The Battery has always reflected the strength
of New York City—weathering national tragedy,
environmental challenges, and economic
fluctuations. Through it all The Battery has
demonstrated how citizens, committed to honoring
the park’s history with a future driven by design
excellence, can regenerate the urban landscape of
a great City.
We send you our most sincere gratitude.

n 2003, Piet Oudolf opened the Gardens of Remembrance at The Battery, the first of his gardens in North
America, and the first in his horticultural master plan for The Battery. These long waterfront gardens were
followed in 2005 with the Bosque. In October of this year, Oudolf planted 42,000 sq. ft. creating the Tiffany & Co.
Woodland Gardens and The Battery Bikeway Gardens. He has now demonstrated at The Battery his full range of
horticulture: woody plants, perennials, and ornamental grasses.
Consistent with Oudolf’s unique planting style, the two new gardens emphasize a sense of softness and
relaxation through vast waves of ornamental grasses and herbaceous perennials. They maintain a focus on plant
structure and four-season interest. “Mixing plants and landscapes fills many distinct definitions of beauty,”
Oudolf explains. And gardens are often spaces where one finds distinct beauty. “Gardens are essential,” he says,
“especially for those living in the city.”
The Tiffany & Co. Foundation Gardens encircle SeaGlass and will be the gateway to the park’s seven-acre
woodlands. They are undulating mounds which recall seaside dunes showcasing Sporobolus heterolepis,
Calamintha nepeta, Persicaria amplexicaulis, and Sedum matrona. They perform as rolling waves of native grasses
with splashes of herbaceous perennials. By playing with the height and depth of these gardens, Oudolf’s designs
allow visitors to feel a deep connection with their surrounding environment.
The Battery Bikeway Gardens feature woody plants and shrubs along its route. Its curved paths act as
“slow down” zones and are intersected with extensive planting beds. We encourage cyclists to take in the beauty
and breadth of The Battery gardens as we strive to provide a sense of serenity and calmness, a rarity in the New York
urban dynamic.

MTA excavation of
2004-2009
The MTA’s first design for the new 1 tunnel and South Ferry
subway station was to occupy the total Battery Woodland.
The Battery Conservancy convinced them to alter their plans
and create the new 1 to connect with the Staten Island Ferry
and the R subway at Peter Minuit Plaza. Still, the woodland
was impacted by six years of construction and the loss of 80
mature trees.
even acres of public park make up
The Battery Woodland, so called because
of its grove of mature trees ranging in age
from 20 to 75 years. Beneath its tranquility
lies the workings of an engineering phenomenon which
encompasses the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, the Battery
Underpass, and the 1, 4, 5, and R subway lines.
A transport metropolis indeed.
Battery Urban Farm
2010 to present
In 2010, eight students from Millennium High School approached The Battery Conservancy about
planting a vegetable garden in the park. We expanded on their request and created The Battery’s first
urban farm. It was an inspired solution to repair the landscape that had suffered years of excavation,
construction, and compaction from bulldozers and heavy truck use.
The Battery Conservancy’s Urban Farm program began with eight students but quickly expanded
to all neighboring schools. In 2014 over 3,000 students from more than 100 schools throughout the
city visited the farm to participate in our weekly Student Farmers program and Farm Field Trips. Nine
public school teachers have gone on to create their own educational farms through our Teacher Training
Program.
After four years of composting and cultivation of vegetal plant matter, a rich and enhanced soil is
ready to welcome the completion of The Battery Bikeway Gardens and a restored Woodland. The urban
farm will now be located west of The Battery Oval.
The Battery Bikeway
Phase II
The Battery
Bikeway Phase I
begins 2015
Early next year, we start the final stage to connect
Manhattan’s east and west sides by bicycle. The
Battery Bikeway’s curved paths and intersecting
gardens will encourage cyclists to slow down as
they arrive at The Battery to take a ride on the
SeaGlass Carousel, to lunch with friends in the
Bosque gardens or just enjoy the ultimate harbor
vista.

onstruction on Downtown’s newest signature destination, The Battery Oval, is nearing completion! Sod is being laid over
the wide expanse of three-acre lawn. It will take a year for the lawn to mature before we open the Oval for public enjoyment.
While the sod is knitting its roots, you can enjoy power-walking or a leisure stroll along the Oval’s quarter-mile perimeter
pathway. Next fall, you will be able to enjoy the Oval from Fleurt, the winning chair of the Battery’s International Design
Competition. With an audience capacity of 5,000 people, The Battery Oval is a great outdoor theater offering an array of
cultural activities including film screenings and live performances.

I
t is a thrill to announce the winner of The Battery Conservancy
Americas Chair Design Competition: Fleurt, by Canadian
designer Andrew Jones. The final phase, of this first-ever
competition for a moveable chair in a New York City park, took
place this summer in Castle Clinton National Monument where
visitors were invited to See, Sit, and Select their favorite from
the five finalist chair prototypes. It was a juried competition, but
public engagement was encouraged to ensure we heard from the
people who will be using the chair.
“Parks are not only green spaces, they are public spaces,”
said New York City Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver.
“The Battery’s competition to create a moveable outdoor chair
has resulted in a unique, innovative, and attractive park amenity
for the public to enjoy.”
The Fleurt selection marks the end of a historic competition
that began in 2012 with 679 submissions, engaging over 1,500
designers from North, Central, and South America.
Andrew Jones was awarded the winning prize of $10,000.
The prize and the complete competition were funded by
generous donors of The Battery Conservancy. Next steps include
selecting a manufacturer for Fleurt and soliciting sponsors
for the fabrication of 300 chairs for use on The Battery Oval,
opening in 2015.

11th Battery Gardeners Luncheon: September 17, 2014
Thanks to our caring and generous supporters of the 11th Battery Gardeners Luncheon! It raised $285,000 to support our dedicated gardening staff.
Our featured speaker, Mark T. Simmons, PhD, Director of Research at The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, presented his research on the restoration
of landscapes to increase native habitat and reduce invasive species. Other special guests included NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, who opened
the program, and Lynda Johnson Robb, who introduced Dr. Simmons. Guests enjoyed tours in the gardens and a lunch generously underwritten by the
Battery Gardens Restaurant. The lush beauty of The Battery was reflected on the luncheon tables by enchanting centerpieces designed by Emily Thompson
Flowers, using cuttings from our very own gardens.
