Tue.-Sat., 11 a.m.-3 p.m. & Sun., Noon-4 p.m. • 6/17-8/15 See some cool vintage robots in the Toys of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s exhibit, and then cut, color and add a dash of flash to create your own paper and wire contraption. Included with museum admission. Toys of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s Exhibit on view through Jan. 5, 2015. Dive into the culture and history of popular toys from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s – from the kids who played with them to the adults who bought them – and discover how they reflect American life. You’ll experience these iconic toys and their stories through three playful living rooms that bring the decades back to life. Also see page 13 for the new Toys of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s book. Museum Theater: Short Plays About Minnesota History Tue.-Fri., 6/17-8/8 Daily schedules at minnesotahistorycenter.org/ museumtheater Performed inside the History Center exhibits, these plays include “Tall Tales of Paul Bunyan,” “Streetcar Time Machine” and more. Included with museum admission. FREE Outdoor Concerts Every Tuesday in July & August Bring a lawn chair. Pack a picnic or buy food and beer/wine from the Café Minnesota terrace grill. ARCHITECTURE Mid-Century Modern Tour Sat., 6/7, 7/12 & 8/9 • 9 a.m.-Noon A bus tour of classic mid-century design by Ralph Rapson, Close Architects, Eliel Saarinen and others in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Includes interiors of public buildings only. $25 ($5 discount, MNHS members). University Grove Home Tour Sat., 7/26 • 9 a.m.-Noon & 1-4 p.m. Tour exteriors and selected interiors in a neighborhood recognized as an “architectural time capsule” of modern America. $35 ($5 discount, MNHS members). Cass Gilbert Home and Building Tour Sat., 8/23 • 9 a.m.-Noon and 1-4 p.m. Explore the exteriors and interiors of public buildings and gracious homes designed by Cass Gilbert, one of the most prolific and stylistically versatile architects of his generation. $35 ($5 discount, MNHS members). Presented in partnership with the Cass Gilbert Society. CIVIL WAR St. Paul After the Civil War Tour Sat., 7/26, 8/23 & 9/13 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Departs from Historic Fort Snelling, 200 Tower Avenue, St. Paul Hear stories of Union veterans, recently freed slaves and European immigrants who arrived here after the Civil War, on a tour with stops at Oakland Cemetery and the Old Soldiers Home. $45 ($5 discount, MNHS members). Minnesota History Day at the State Fair Sun., 8/31 • 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Join us for the fifth Minnesota History Day at the State Fair’s Carousel Park. It’s an action-packed line-up of music, trivia and fun. Included with State Fair admission. EXHIBIT OPENING War of 1812: Canada, the United States, Great Britain and Native Americans Opens Tue., 6/3 This intimate exhibit created by the Canadian War Museum explores the War of 1812 through the perspectives of the main participants: Canadians (including Canadian First Peoples), Americans, the British and Native Americans. Original artifacts from the MNHS collections will be on display, including the first map to show the existence of all five Great Lakes; a first edition of Father Hennepin’s “Travels” and a 1689 fur trade contract with Nicolas Perrot. SPECIAL EVENT The Civil War of 1812 with Pulitzer Prize-Winning Historian, Alan Taylor Sat., 6/7 • 2 p.m. Join distinguished historian Alan Taylor for this exclusive lecture about the War of 1812, a civil war between competing visions of North America. $15 ($4 discount, MNHS members). Toys of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s Experience iconic toys and their stories through three playful living rooms that bring the decades back to life. Sights, Sounds and Soul: Twin Cities through the Lens of Charles Chamblis View more than 60 images documenting the Twin Cities Black community in the ’70s and ’80s.
