Marvel Ultimate Alliance
BRAWL
T IN!
The greatest battle between heroes and villains ever…
his frenetic all-action brawler will have
superhero fans quivering in their boots with
pleasure! The premise is simple: you pick a
team of four of Marvel’s best and send them
into action against an army of super-villains led by
Dr Doom (curse him!). At your disposal is the largest
roster of super heroes ever assembled for a game.
You start off with an incredible 20 playable characters,
including Blade, Spider-Man, Thor, Elektra, Captain
America and everybody’s favourite steel-clawed
mutant, Wolverine – and you can go on to unlock
dozens more as you battle though scores of smartlooking, destructible levels.
Even in the single-player game, it’s carnage on
screen as you deal out the pain as one hero while the AI gets stuck in with the others. Things get
even more chaotic as you upgrade your fighters’
superpowers – some of which you can share
out between your fantastic four. With multiplayer
opportunities aplenty (online over Xbox Live), it’s not brain surgery but it is enormous fun. Up, up and
away with you!
This time
it’s war
as you

of angry

the kicking they deserve! During the
monkey madness you’ll get your
hands on high-tech vehicles and

The ultra-realistic war shooter is even scarier than ever…
W
ith its immense scale and brutally
convincing realism, the Call of Duty series
has reinvented the crammed genre that
is the WWII shooter. And now Call of Duty
3 ratchets up the intensity to levels that make the
competition seem pale by comparison. Indeed, as you
rotate between the stories of four grunts slugging it
out from Normandy to Paris, you almost wish you had
a tin hat on yourself.
Almost everything in this awesome-looking game
explodes, sending belches of flame and smoke into
the sky. And everyone shoots at you… Whizzing
bullets, howling tank fire, the lot. Huge and chaotic,
CoD3’s battlefields aren’t arenas for
you to strut your heroism – they’re
mass slaughter houses. And when
the bodies start dropping around
you, you know it’s time to go
under cover and start thinking
of some kind of desperate
flanking manoeuvre. Look no
further for your WWII action.

Go dungeon busting on the DS and GBA…
n this RPG spin off from the main Pokémon series,
you wake to find that you’ve been turned into a
Pokémon yourself and that the land around you
is being destroyed by natural disasters. With no
memory of your previous identity, you hook up with
other pokémon and form a rescue team to enter
dungeons and help other pokémon in distress.
The fighting is a clever concoction of real-time
and turn-based combat with wild Pokémon roving the
dungeons with you. You can have up to four Pokémon
in your team at once, with the computer controlling
the other three. As each of you has different attacks
and abilities, you can assemble a varied crew to
make sure you can deal with
whatever confronts you. But
if you do get into trouble, the
DS version of the game (Blue
Rescue Team) lets your friends
enter a dungeon wirelessly to
rescue you. So always be nice to
all your mates. You never know

Wii it’s here at last...
There’s a new console in town – and it completely changes the way
we play games. We’re afraid even your mum’s going to want a go!
C
onsole gaming is all about frantic button pressing, right? Not
any more! Nintendo’s new Wii has swept away all that with
its magical new motion-sensing Remote Controllers. Where
once you returned a tennis serve with the jab of a finger, in a
Wii game you smash it back by swishing the Wii Remote like it is an
actual tennis racket. In a first-person shooter, the Remote becomes the
weapon that you point at an enemy… Cool, eh? The list of game uses
for the Remote goes is endless – and Wii’s varied raft of launch titles
reflect this. So rest assured, whatever your age or ability, you can be
sure that you will discover many engrossing and enjoyable Wii games
just perfect for you.
So the Wii’s games are exciting to play in a totally new way,
but what about the graphics? While the Wii doesn’t have the highdefinition grunt of the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles, its games still look
very smart indeed. And you’re getting a great deal for your £179.99.
Not only can you play GameCube games on the Wii, using the Wii’s
collection of channels, you can also surf the net and download classic
games. Read on to find out
more about the wonderful Wii
and its totally revolutionary
range of games…
Wii TAKE control!
Swing! Wave! Rumble! Introducing
the Wii Remote and Nunchuck…
P
repare to get swinging and swishing, swatting and stabbing,
batting and bashing, tilting and twisting… The completely
wireless Wii Remote is going to revolutionise video gaming.
Using Bluetooth technology, the Remote works by sending your
swishing and pointing actions to a sensor bar that you place by your TV.
Clever, eh? The Remote also rumbles and it has a built-in speaker too
so you’ll hear that ping! as you send your tee shot up the fairway in Wii
Sports Golf. Up to four Remotes can be used at the same time, making
it perfect for multiplayer games. A game of tennis doubles, anyone?
The Nunchuk, which also has motion-sensing capabilities, has a
lead that clips into the bottom of the Wii Remote and works in tandem
with it. In a fight in The Legend of Zelda, the Wii Remote acts as the
sword while the Nunchuk acts as your shield. And in a fight in Wii
Sports Boxing, guard up like a pro as you’ll be unleashing jabs with
both hands!

Wii think it’s great
FOUR lucky CHIPS folk had a fantastic day testing out all the new Wii
games, thanks to Nintendo and Nindie.com. Here are four hardened
gamers’ thoughts on the latest console and games to hit the streets.
“I was amazed
at how good and
responsive the
Controllers are...
The Wii will have
such a wide
appeal.”
James Tildesley
CHIPS Consett
& CHIPS Chester Le Street franchisee
Gavin Pearson
CHIPS Dudley franchisee
I was really impressed with the Wii. Rayman is just top notch and
Zelda and Wii Sports will do really well. I can imagine lots of adults
grabbing a bottle of wine when the kids have gone to bed and
playing this. The graphics on Call of Duty 3 really impressed me and
Red Steel was nice. I really enjoyed the day.
“The graphics on
Call of Duty 3 really
impressed me.”
It is a superb machine. I was amazed at how good and responsive
the controllers are. The Wii will have such a wide appeal. Wii Sports
is incredible! It is the sort of game the whole family will enjoy. You
get very drawn in by the features – some people actually do the runup when they are playing Wii Bowling. For me, Zelda, Red Steel and
Rayman are the best games, particularly the Rayman mini-games.
“Playing the
Wii blew
away my
already high
expectations.”
Amy McCabe
CHIPS Area Manager
I found that spending an afternoon playing the Nintendo Wii blew
away my already high expectations for the machine. It is amazing.
I played Zelda: Twilight Princess, Wii Play and Wii Sports, Trauma
Centre, Red Steel and Rayman, among many others. Wario and
Rayman were two of my favourite games on the Wii because of the
intuitive way the controller is used and performs. Overall I found
the Nintendo Wii very easy to use and very, very enjoyable for both
single-player and multiplayer games. I can’t wait to own one, I am
so excited!!

I was surprised at how natural the controls felt playing Wii Sports
Bowling and Baseball. You really play as you would in the real game.
Games like Zelda and Call of Duty 3 had slightly more complex
controls but, once you play for a few minutes, it becomes so natural
and you become totally immersed. For me, Rayman was the best by
far. The mini-games were so simple, yet so much fun. The Wii and
Rayman with a few extra Controllers are top of my Christmas list!!
“Rayman was the
best... simple yet so
much fun.”

In this Buzz! party, instead of answering a series of questions, there’s
a stocking full of mini-games to play, set in a wild jungle full of cheeky
chimps. First you choose a monkey to play as then you can have a
go at frantic head-to-head games
involving crazy things such as
parachuting off cliffs and Wild West
shoot-outs with bananas for guns.
Monkey business or what!

Prepare to rock around the clock with the
sequel to the best rhythm

in the single-player game is
simple: play your way from
smoky bars to huge arenas.
But it’s in the multiplayer mode

you dueling on guitar-shaped
controllers as bass, rhythm or
lead. Will you be ‘rocking out’ or
‘sucking badly’?
È EyeToy Lemmings
n Price: £24.99 n Age: 3+ n Sony
Danger is barely a footstep away for these relentlessly marching
hordes of green-haired critters that you must guide to safety. Ever since it
was first released in 1991, Lemmings has been fun – and it’s even more so

well as your brains to save every Lemming… ‘No! Not that way!’

Meet 34-year-old Stephen Osborne, CHIPS’ latest franchisee. With
a background in retail as a manager for Dixons, Stephen is also a
fully trained plumber. He decided to ditch the leaky pipes to open a
retail franchise and thought CHIPS was a great option. He decided on
Longton in Stoke-On-Trent as the best location for his new store.
Quick Q&A
Q.
A.
What was your first console?
The Amstrad 464, then the Amiga 500
followed by a PS One. I have also enjoyed PC
gaming since late the 1990s.
Q.
A.
Q.
A.
And what is your all-time
favourite game?
My favourite game has to be
Lemmings, on the Amiga.
What is it that you like so much
about Lemmings?
I loved the strategy behind it and
have to confess to deliberately blowing up
numbers of them sometimes to spice the
games up.
Q.
A.
What consoles do you play?
I play on the Xbox 360 and also PC.
Q.
A.
Why did you want to open your
own CHIPS store?
I had worked in retail before becoming
a plumber and decided I wanted a retail
franchise. When I typed that into the internet,
I found CHIPS. The more I investigated, the
more I realised it was the store for me. With
the launch of the Nintendo Wii on December
8 and the new PS3 in March, combined with
the great games on the shelves for the Xbox
360 and hand-held consoles, this is the
perfect time to open a games store.
Q.
A.
Who will be helping you out in
the store?
I am employing my friend and explumbing colleague Matthew Lovatt. Matthew
has been playing video games since he was
eight and his knowledge is fantastic. His
enthusiasm for the industry and CHIPS really
helped me make my mind up about starting
this new career. We met while training to be
plumbers and work well together.

CHIPS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS CONFERENCE is the BIGGEST AND BEST EVER…
T
hey came from all over the country. Men and women devoted to
giving you the best range of video games and the best customer
service you can get anywhere. It wasn’t easy. Some even had
to endure two-hour journeys on luxury planes before finally
arriving at their destination: the 2006 CHIPS Christmas Conference,
held this year at ornate, sprawling Ramside Hall in County Durham.
Microsoft came, Sony came, Nintendo came, store managers and
CHIPS employees came, journalists came and an enormous lunchtime
buffet was consumed before the serious business began.
And so to an afternoon of dazzling presentations and lots of handson fun as the great and good of the gaming world came to show us
their wares so that we, in turn, would be able to talk knowledgeably
about them to you. Nintendo amazed us with glimpses of its Wii, while
reminding us that this year’s hot console to date has been the DS. Sony
did its best not to mention the PS3 but instead focussed on its plans to
revitalise the PSP with the introduction of the mighty Media Manager
that lets you swap all sorts of files easily with your PC. Microsoft then
upped the decibel level, pinning stunned delegates to their chairs with
awesome X360 footage of game after game, as if to say ‘who needs a
PS3 anyway?’.
After the company presentations, the awards (see panel, right) for
those CHIPS folk who’ve gone the extra mile this year on your behalf,
then a last chance to play with some games and off to an immense
Christmas dinner with all the trimmings!
WE’d like to thank! All the companies who made it possible – Activision, Computer Bookshops, Gem, Electronic Arts, Focus, Mad Catz, Pinnacle, PowerPlay, PerfectPlay, Sony and

➔ An awesome first-person shooter, this is all
about insane body counts, stupidly destructible
environments and fantastic weapons taken
from Hollywood action classics such as The
Matrix, Terminator 2 and Predator. Forget the
story – ‘urban warfare’ sums that up. You
should concentrate instead on the goons that
don’t just drop when you shoot them in the
face but dramatically fly back like a booted jack
russell and plummet over a ledge. This is a nononsense dose of excitement and a deliberate
move away from the stealthy covert ops
shooters that have become so popular recently.
Just have fun! ■

repairs
What do you do when your
favourite console gives up the
ghost – use it as a doorstop?
We hope not! Each CHIPS
store offers a repair service for
all consoles via MICROMART.
Simple take your console in and
describe the fault. MICROMART
will collect it and (hopefully)
return it in working order.
We look here at the common
faults of the Xbox and Xbox 360
and the estimated cost of repair:
XBOX
● Faulty CD Rom – One of the
error codes (10-16) is usually
displayed if the fault relates to the
CD Rom. Medium
● Faulty power supply – Will not
switch on. Medium
● Broken tray – Easy to replace,
if you have one. Low
● Broken case – Easily replaced
for a few quid. Low
● Power input assembly
– Check that when the mains lead
is ‘waggled’, there is no arcing at
the power in skt. Medium
● Motherboard/hard drive are
matched – Watch out for error
codes 1–9. High. (It is likely to be
beyond economical repair).
XBOX 360 (£50 – £80 range)
● Overheating – Can run for
several hours before exhibiting the
fault. High
● Laser – Early days yet but the
laser is always a problem and they
are never cheap. High
● External power module – Do
not make the mistake of buying a
console without the power module.
Repair cost indicator: Low, up to £35;
medium, up to £50; high, up to £80.
More than one fault can affect the overall cost.

Woodley franchise es Andy and
Mandy O’Sullivan have chipped in
to help a local youth football team.
CHIPS Woodley has forked out
almost £600 to kit out Woodley
Rangers this season.
Team manager Theresa Scotti
said: ‘We are so pleased to have
this new strip. CHIPS is a brilliant
sponsor because a lot of the team
are really into video games’.
‘We try to keep the subs low
to attract new players so if we
need to buy anything , we have to
raise money to pay for it and this
really helps us out.
As CHIPS Woodley is one of
the players’ favourite stores, we
approach ed Andy and Mandy
about possible sponsorsh ip. We
were over the moon when they
agreed,’ said Theresa.
Franchise e Andy O’Sullivan
said: ‘We are delighted to sponsor
the team. I am ex-Army and
realise that fitness is extremely
importan t. CHIPS is very much
part of the communit y and we are
delighted we are able to support
the team, just as it supports us.’
Here’s a blast from the past. We are
very grateful to a CHIPS Hartlepool
regular, 35-year-old Paul Young,
for unearthing this very early
CHIPS bag which he found in the
back of a drawer. It just shows how
much CHIPS has changed over the
20 years it has been in business
– and how often Paul cleans out his
drawers! Only joking!
We are sure he is hanging on
to the CHIPS bag for sentimental
reasons, as Paul has been a
customer of CHIPS since the first
store opened 20 years ago! Who
knows, the bag could be worth a
fortune in years to come!
raja is a winner!!
Well done to Raja Medare who scooped one of the
top prizes in the CHIPS Magazine Monster House
Competition. The 12-year-old is one of CHIPS Dudley’s
regular customers and was delighted to win his prize.

Chips fan
Edward Watts is such a big fan of
CHIPS Orpington, he decided to record
it for posterity.
The 12-year-old has sent us this
picture of franchisee Dave Jarvis, his
partner Lynsey Anderton and sales
assistant Chris Filmar.
Edward, of Wotton Green,
Orpington, is a regular visitor to
the store in the High Street and his
favourite games are Harry Potter and Kameo on the
Xbox 360.
This is the second time Edward’s artistic talents
have been displayed in CHIPS Chat. In Issue 10, he was
featured with a fantastic picture he had drawn of
our very own Mr CHIPS.
mario crazy
CHIPS Arnold regulars Jacob and
Thomas King are totally crazy
about Mario.
So much so that they have
spent their spare time creating a
new story about him and his friends
and sent it to us. Unfortunately, we
don’t have the space to show it all
but, as you can see from the picture
(left), it looks great!
CHIPS Arnold franchisees Mike
and Jenny Smith couldn’t resist
snapping a picture of 10-year-old
Jacob and eight-year-old Thomas
when they last visited the Croft
Road store, along with their
favourite CHIPS Magazine cover
featuring Mario himself.

Dear CHIPS
Thank you and the Star Series for my radio.
It’s cool!
Yours sincerely
Jamie Round, Boldon Colliery.
Hi Jamie, glad you liked it. CHIPS stores
try to run regular competitions in
regional papers as well as the CHIPS
Magazine so all our customers get
the chance to win some great goodies
which just can’t be bought in the
shops. Sometimes publishers send us
branded goodies and we try to pass
them on to people who really appreciate
them. I know you regularly enter our
competitions and it is nice to know you
really appreciate the prizes.
Thanks Andy. We are so glad you like
the Wii magazine. We felt that with the

Dear CHIPS
I just wanted to say how great your CHIPS
Guide to the Wii magazine was! I have my Wii
on pre-order from my CHIPS store and am
counting down the days until I can pick it up!
The magazine was a great taster. I loved all
the information about the controllers – I can’t
wait to get my hands on them. I am really
excited about Wii Play – it looks like so much
fun. The magazine also gave information on
all the games that will be released with the
Wii too, which was so useful and a really good
read. Wonderful job. Thanks CHIPS.

Dear CHIPS
Being in the trade, I regularly read industry
bible MCV and in Issue (10 Nov), I spotted
CHIPS’ very own cuddly director, Don McCabe
with the new Wii. Great picture Don! But it
doesn’t mention that he is from CHIPS!

Dear CHIPS
In the last issue of CHIPS
Magazine, you mentioned
the CHIPS download service
so I went on the CHIPS
website to take a look. It’s
brilliant! I downloaded Zoo Vet first on a free
trial first and then bought it afterwards. It
was really easy. I have decided that I am
going to buy my brother one for Christmas
and email it to him. Thanks CHIPS. That is a
great service.
