WWW.ALLTHINGSBIGANDSMALLBLOG.COM DIY Upholstered Headboard: Twin Size MATERIALS: -2 yards of fabric -Staple gun -2 yards batting 4 oz. -2 yards 2” foam -Plywood 40”x 36” -Sharp knife (chefs or serrated is fine), an electric is best! As far as materials we used the following: 2 yards (you could probably get away with 1.5) of fabric. I used the Berta Ruta fabric Ikea which was only $8.99/ yd, a staple gun, thick batting (I think we used the 4 oz.) from JoAnn with a 50% off coupon, and 2 yards of 2″ foam from JoAnn. You could have them cut the plywood at Home Depot if you bring the measurements. I had the associate at JoAnn cut the foam in the following dimensions. It comes standard in 24” wide sections, so get the following cuts two (24” x 40”) you can cut one yourself at home into (12” x 40”). WWW.ALLTHINGSBIGANDSMALLBLOG.COM PROCEDURE: 1.) Cut the foam to the proportions above: 24” x 40” and 12” x 40” Have Home Depot or your husband cut the headboard to the measurements: 36 x 40. 2.) Round the corners of the foam with a serrated knife slightly if you want a rounded edge. WWW.ALLTHINGSBIGANDSMALLBLOG.COM 3.) Glue the foam to the plywood with a hot glue gun. Next, wrap the batting around the foam with an extra 3-4” on the back of the plywood. If using 2” foam you are going to want to have the batting 5.5” longer than the plywood/ foam on each side, so you have about 3.5” excess on the back. Attach the batting to the plywood with a staple gun. WWW.ALLTHINGSBIGANDSMALLBLOG.COM 4.) Trim excess batting off the edges with scissors. Next, place the fabric on top of the batting and attach leaving 3-4” extra on each side to ensure sure you have enough to wrap around the edge of the foam and 2” on the back. Staple first the top and the bottom, pulling the fabric really tight. Start stapling in the middle and work out to the corners. After stapling the top and bottom, do the sides. Finally, staple do the edges rounding the corners. Last, trim excess fabric from the edges. Ready to hang it on the wall! WWW.ALLTHINGSBIGANDSMALLBLOG.COM 5.) A French Cleat is a bit more work intensive. Good instructions are available on the web, but here are the pictures and description of what we did: The top board is attached to the headboard and the bottom board is attached to the wall. You can see in the picture above that they nest together. To remove the headboard, one has to lift up first and then out. It is very secure.
