WElcome Letter
August 2013
Greetings Beta Alpha Psi Meeting Attendees,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2013 Beta Alpha Psi Annual Meeting in
Anaheim, CA, home to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and Mickey Mouse.
The 2013 Annual Meeting kicks off with two opportunities for our membership to
participate in community service efforts for the Anaheim area:
• First, those participants selected for Project Run With It, sponsored by Moss
Adams LLP, will develop proposal presentations for two deserving local area
not-for-profit organizations in response to requests for assistance with special
projects, and
• On Thursday, all remaining annual meeting participants will have the opportunity
to participate in our annual Community Service Day (CSD). This year, CSD is a
collaboration between Beta Alpha Psi, KPMG LLP, KPMG Foundation, First Book,
and United Way of Orange County. We are hosting Literacy Fairs at six Boys
and Girls Clubs and three elementary schools serving children from low-income
families in the Anaheim and Garden Grove areas as well as hosting an event at
a nursery school that will involve a special activity. This exceptional opportunity
will allow us to engage directly with the children in a variety of fun activities
that will hopefully bring out the inner child in each of us. During our Literacy
Fair, every child will have a book read to them and will then receive a new book
to take home. For many of these students, this will be the first book that they
have ever owned.
In addition to these two events that reinforce Beta Alpha Psi’s commitment to
giving back to the community, the meeting’s remaining programming, networking
and events are structured to reinforce the fundamental concepts behind building
relationships with peers and professionals; recognizing and rewarding scholastic
success; developing mental toughness; instilling commitment to lifelong professional
development; ethical behavior; service and developing leadership skills through the
following sessions:
• Presentations created by your peers to help you effectively and efficiently run
your chapters;
• Competence-building sessions delivered by the BAP Professional Partners;
• Keynote addresses that will inspire you, light your imagination, and provide
innovative ideas for you to consider;
• Expert panel discussions; and
• Networking opportunities with professionals, exhibitors, faculty advisors
and fellow students.

1-05. W
hich Way Forward for Sustainability Reporting?
Location: Garden 1
Presenter: Richard Spencer, Head of Sustainability, ICAEW
The last four years has seen a flurry of activity around how to
mainstream sustainability disclosures from the publication of
King 3 in South Africa, embedding sustainability reporting in
corporate disclosure in South Africa to the establishment of the
IIRC, the launch of the Global Reporting Initiative G4 guidance,
the UK government introducing mandatory greenhouse gas
disclosure and the launch of the Sustainability Accounting
Standards Board in the USA. The establishment of SASB raises
the question of how the USA will relate to the rest of the world
on this topic. Is the USA going it alone?
This session will address three major questions
• What are the drivers for sustainability disclosures?
• How should these be integrated (or not) into mainstream
reporting?
• How will we achieve a global consensus?

There is a lot of information going around about what a career in
Public Accounting will be like. You may even have heard some
information that you’re not sure about too. Join me as we look
at some myths that exist. We will work to either verify or “bust”
these myths.

Your studies and interaction in Beta Alpha Psi give you a lot of

many things that you might not hear about from your classes
and during the interview process. In this session, we’ll talk about
some of the real-world experiences you’ll encounter during
your first year or two in public accounting that are “Beyond the
Employee Handbook,” including engagement economics, dealing
with difficult client situations, office politics and the firm holiday
party, among others. We’ll share some humorous (actual)
examples of what not to do – and then discuss some possible
alternatives in a variety of day-to-day accounting firm realities.

and Opportunities

The business world is shrinking. Borders are blurred. Diversity is
the norm. Comfort zones are few and far-between. These are the
realities of global business, a landscape in which agility – not
just ability – merits success.
To operate with certainty demands heightened awareness of the
world and one’s self. A global mindset and inclusive leadership
are key. These pillars support Ernst & Young’s approach to
business, both at home and abroad.
Through this presentation, we explore the three components of
a global mindset – intellectual, psychological and social capital
– and how to bolster each. We delineate, too, what it means to
