WELCOME BACK! Fulshear High School joins Lamar CISD! SCHOOL STARTS AUGUST 22! INSIDE: Back to School Information 30,000-strong … and growing! The beginning of school is always an exciting time, but it will be extra special for the students at Lamar CISD’s fifth secondary complex. This year, the Fulshear High School and Leaman Junior High Chargers are officially joining the Lamar CISD family. Plus, this is the first year our enrollment officially tops 30,000 students. In all, there are 15 separate municipalLindsey Elementary ities that are at least partially within Lamar CISD. Over 65 years ago, several smaller districts joined together or “consolidated”, resulting in Lamar CISD. If you don’t have school-aged children, we still want you to consider Lamar CISD “your” school district. The work that goes on in classrooms, practice halls, gymnasiums and on athletic fields is making a real difference in our community. Today, Lamar CISD is one of the fastest growing school districts in the state. To facilitate the growth, we’ll open two schools this fall. Two more are under construction and several are in various phases of planning. Today’s students are tomorrow’s doctors, nurses, engineers, elected representatives and business owners. It’s in all of our best interests to produce students who are ready to take on the world. Fulshear High School and Leaman Junior High open this August. Leaman will house grades 6-8 when it opens, but voters have already approved a middle Bentley Elementary school (Roberts Middle School) that will soon be home to the area’s sixth-graders. Bentley Elementary, home of the Blazers, will also open this school year. If you ever want to know what’s going on in your neighborhood school, just stop by and ask. We are proud of our students and schools and you should be, too. Don’t forget to check out our social media pages or www.lcisd.org for the latest information on Lamar CISD. If you need assistance, but don’t know where to look, please feel free to call our Community Relations Department at (832) 223-0330. It’s going to be a great year in Lamar CISD — Welcome Back! Thomas Randle, Ed.D. Superintendent 2 If you’re new to the area, you might wonder why Lamar is a “Consolidated” Independent School District. Bentley Elementary, which is in the Creekside Ranch subdivision on FM 359, is scheduled to open in January 2017 and Lindsey Elementary, in Firethorne West near I-10, will open for the 2017-2018 school year. The District is also adding three practice swimming pools, one each at Foster, Fulshear and George Ranch high schools. Those will facilitate the competitive swim programs and help with our 4th-grade swimming program. Plus, a second Ag Barn will serve our thriving FFA programs and it’s being built near FM 359 in the northern part of the District. Bentley Blazers Fulshear area 3 CHARGES into new era “Charger” is a term for a horse ridden into battle... or it can be a person who charges forward into a new adventure. The “Chargers” will be the mascot for both of Lamar CISD’s newest schools–Fulshear High School and Leaman Junior High. Both schools will open for the 2016-2017 school year. The schools will also share the purple and black color motif. “From grades six through 12, these kids will be Chargers,” said Daniel Ward, principal at Fulshear High. “We are one. Once a Charger, always a Charger.” Voters approved both schools in the 2011 bond election to help meet the educational needs of the District’s rapidly growing northern area. Fulshear opens with freshmen and sophomores, adding one class group in each of the next two years. Leaman Junior High, run by former Briscoe Junior High Principal Michael Semmler, will open with grades 6-8. Voters also approved a 6th grade campus (Roberts Middle School) for the complex, which will be built when needed. Both campuses are on schedule and will be ready for the first day of school, Aug. 22. POINTS OF PRIDE Lamar CISD was one of only 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada—and one of only 25 in Texas—to be honored by the College Board on the 6th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. Lamar Consolidated High School’s Jose Zelaya is a 2016 Gates Millennium Scholar, making him one of only 1,000 high school students in the country who will have tuition and fees covered for his education, including graduate school. George Ranch High School went 16-0 and captured the 2015 Division I Class 5A State Football Championship. The team was also ranked nationally. Lamar CISD is one of 130 school districts in the United States—and one of only 21 in Texas— placed on the College Board’s Gaston Caperton Opportunity Honor Roll. Foster High School senior Muhammad Yunus earned the 2016 Tommy Tune award for Best Actor, earning an opportunity to study in New York City. Check the Lamar CISD website to find your designated pick-up and drop-off spot (availble in August). A team effort by transportation, campus personnel and parents and students is needed to ensure each child travels safely to and from school each day. The following tips will help achieve that goal throughout the school year. “These suggestions are just friendly reminders of the things people should remember when their child rides the bus,” said Mike Jones, who is entering his first full year as Director of Transportation at Lamar CISD. “We want to assure parents that the safe, on-time delivery of their students to and from school is being carried out by trained professionals.” “We want parents to come to us with their concerns and problems,” he said. “Working together will help us all.” Mike Jones, Director of Transportation School Bus Safety Tips • Have your child at the bus stop five minutes before the scheduled pick-up time (ideally 10 minutes early the first day of school, until routes have been established). • If possible, teach your child their full name, home address and the telephone number of an adult family member. • If possible, accompany your child(ren) to the bus stop (this is strongly suggested for elementary students). • Remind students to watch out for siblings at drop-off and pick-up times. Encourage them to notify the bus driver if a sibling does not board the bus or gets off at the wrong stop. • If you’re unable to be home when your child arrives, arrange an alternate plan with your child: where to go, a hidden key, talk to a neighbor, etc. • Students are only allowed to ride their assigned bus to and from their assigned bus stop to minimize the potential of a hazardous situation. A temporary change in bus assignments can only be made on an emergency basis if a request is submitted by the parent in writing (by note or FAX) and approved by the school personnel. Requests should be submitted at least 30 minutes before the end of the school day to make sure everyone is aware of the change. Seniors Gold Card Club Don’t miss a game this season, or a concert or play! All Lamar CISD residents aged 65 or older are eligible for the Gold Card Club. The Gold Card provides free admission to athletic and cultural events, such as plays and concerts (Sorry, but playoff games are excluded from this offer). You do not have to re-apply every year. Once you sign up, you are a member for life. Come by the Community Relations Office in the Brazos Crossing Administration Building (3911 Avenue I, Rosenberg, 77471) to get your Gold Card before the action begins! 6 7 VOLUNTEER Parents and other community members who wish to be a part of the decision-making process at Lamar CISD should consider serving on one or more of the District’s advisory committees.
