olphin From the Helm—Murray Laidley, Commodore Newsletter Vol. 40, No. 10 October 2016 Gary Ladd, Editor [email protected] Friday Evening saw a BYOB Happy Hour on the dock with munchies provided by the club. Saturday morning I donned the chef’s hat to lead the Breakfast Crew. Thanks to Mike Silhan, Mike Price, Jack McKenzie, Carol Silhan, Alice McKenzie, Linda Adams and Val Laidley for the beer batter pancakes, sausages, fresh apple slices, orange juice and champagne for mimosas. With a cameo by our frequent breakfast host Greg Finch to supervise the pancake batter. Yum. Mid-day six poker stations were hosted by dealers Teresa Prescott, Connie Cobb, Alice McKenzie, Joan Scarboro, Carol Silhan and Kim Oldis. The run provided exercise and entertainment for all. At dinner the barbeques were lit for the no-host dinner. High hand prizes were awarded to Terry Sigmond, Carol McGarry, Mike Silhan, and Nila Horton and low hand to Crystal Swigert. Thanks to Mike Silhan, Alice McKenzie, Carol Silhan, Teresa Prescott and Linda and Martyn Adams for set up and clean up. www.shelterbayyachtclub.org 1000 SHOSHONE DRIVE, LA CONNER, WA 98257 October 2016 Shelter Bay Yacht Club Photos-Rod Proctor September was another active month for the club. The SBYC cruising season wrapped up with our annual Sucia Cruise, Sept 9th to Sept 11 with 23 boats and 51 people participating. Boats rafted on both the north and south docks and three anchored out. With a planned informal “nohost” weekend it was relaxed and cordial on a warm late-summer weekend. And special thanks from the crew of Asylum to Kim and Dale Oldis, Syd and Kay Arrowsmith, Carol and Mike Silhan, and Larry and Teresa Prescott for hauling equipment and supplies to Sucia, ‘cause there’s no way it would all fit on a cruising sailboat! Saturday September 17th brought the Past Commodore’s Spaghetti Dinner in the Clubhouse catered by Tasteful Vineyards and hosted by Chris and Darlene Dailey and Past Commodores Brad and Barbara Bradford, Tom and Dee Ihrig, Kirsten and Don Chandler, Linda and Jim Barrett, and Betty and Jim Foster. After dinner a hilarious game of Reverse Charades was led by Carol and Mike Silhan, finally won by Table 7 on the roll of the dice. Saturday, October 15th join us for the October Clubhouse Dinner & Square Dance. Register on-line or call Val for assistance. Vice Commodore—Jim Barrett The Nominating Committee is recommending the following candidates for Board positions. Elections will be held at the October dinner meeting. Jon Gailbrath first experienced Shelter Bay in 1992 when his girlfriend Debbie brought him up to "meet the parents", Harmon and Allie Holtman, at their home on Kalispell Drive. 15 years later, after marrying in 1993 and then moving to Colorado in 1996 for career opportunities, Jon and Debbie bought a vacation home in Shelter Bay as a way to get a foothold back in the Pacific Northwest where they'd be closer to friends and family (Debbie grew up in Federal Way and Jon is a 3rd-generation Washington native). They joined the Shelter Bay Yacht Club in 2012 after buying their first boat together (a 35' Tiara Express cruiser). Jon's previous boating experience was limited to lakes and rivers in eastern Washington but he quickly fell in love with the San Juan and Gulf Islands. He and Debbie upgraded to their 48' Navigator, "Äventyr", in 2015 which has extended their cruising range and enabled them to become avid year-round boaters. Since retiring from a career in software engineering and management in 2012, Jon has volunteered as an ambassador for the Steamboat ski resort and as the website/database administrator for the Northwest Navigator Yacht Owners club, and he and Debbie coordinated and hosted the annual La Conner Classic Boat Show from 2012 through 2015. In addition to boating, Jon enjoys skiing, golf, scuba diving, and travel. He and Debbie became full time residents of Shelter Bay last year and can't think of a better place to live. Jon looks forward to future adventures with the Shelter Bay Yacht Club and to serving as a member of the Bridge. Sheila Cencak was born and raised in Southern California moving to Washington with her husband Tom in 1978. In 2003 they purchased a home in Shelter Bay knowing it was a perfect place to retire. Sheila retired from Scott Paper/Kimberly-Clark January 2012 after 32 years where she worked in finance, computer programing and Human Resource. Sheila has enjoyed over the years designing and building homes, fishing, crabbing and traveling. You’ve probably seen her walking with Max her little yorkiepoo or peddling her “Yacht” the Wine-ette around Shelter Bay. Sheila was excited to join the yacht club earlier this year and is looking forward to serve as Treasurer. Clark Scarboro and Joan moved to Shelter Bay in 1999 after 25 years in Lake Stevens. He became Fleet Captain that year and moved through the chairs to become Commodore in 2003. They are avid boaters and currently own the 30 foot Nonsuch sailboat, Elle Joan. He has been active in Shelter Bay activities as a member of the Building Committee for 16 years and on the Harbor Committee since inception. Joan is responsible for the flowers you see at the gate and was a charter member of the Enhancement Committee. Clark’s career was mostly in boating. Over the years he was a Broker, Agent for overseas shipyards, boat builder, designer and engineer. He’s retired from Bayliner in Arlington where he was Director of Engineering. He is responsible for the design and production of many of the boats in our harbor. Boating has always been a passion. In early years he took time off and cruised his sailboat to Mexico, Costa Rica and the Hawaiian Islands . Both Joan and Clark have been fortunate to have enjoyed many cruises on small boats with friends in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and in Mexico . They spend summers exploring the beautiful Northwest waters of Washington and British Columbia when the sun is out. He looks forward to helping guide the Shelter Bay Yacht Club as it moves into our ever changing times. The Nominations Committee was not able to locate and recommend an individual for the Fleet Captain position. Therefore, short of a nomination from the floor during the election meeting, I will, with the help of my wife Linda, perform the duties of Fleet Captain during 2017. It may seem too early for talking about next year’s Commodore’s Cruise, but at next month’s Training on Oct. 3 we will have a Cruise Planning session on the possibility of doing a South Sound Commodore’s cruise. Presentations on the ports, distances, costs and local sites of a South Cruise, as well as some recent experiences of members traveling south will be offered. If sufficient interest comes out of this meeting a detailed cruise program will be planned. Please come and share your thoughts. You will receive your membership renewal notice in the mail this week. Please remember to pay your dues by November 1. 2 From the Charthouse, Dennis Largé —Fleet Captain Although Susan and I were not able to participate in the Sucia Island cruise, we heard that it was an enjoyable cruise with 23 boats and 51 individuals attending. Even though it was a “no host” event, I want to thank Murray and Val Laidley for their “no hosting” effort – and to everyone else who volunteered on site to help make it a successful event. As I write this article, I’m reminded of the fairly good weather we’ve had so far this year. OK, so some of us had some challenges cruising up north. Well, today is a bit stormy and is an indication of the change in the weather to come as we are officially in Fall. All of which makes me think of an article I’ve been reading in the August 25, 2016, BoatUS Magazine, “Storm Prep.” Although the article focuses on hurricane weather (and as we all know we can have winds here that seem like a hurricane), it brings up some good pointers. To quickly paraphrase, the first thing one should do is to make sure your insurance is in good order. Next, check dock lines particularly for chaffing. Plan for wind – remove or firmly fasten down anything that can be blown away or damaged (including dinghies). Plan for rain – ensure scuppers are clear of debris, hatches closed, and what about your bilge pumps. This is just a short list, but is meant to prompt your attention to the weather to come. I was down at the marina this morning while the wind was moderate. I was surprised to see a few boats with mooring lines that were not properly secured or improperly placed fenders; and not finding emergency contact cards, I gave the slip numbers to the office. Hope this helps and that your boats stay safe. Training Coordinator—Jack Cheetham Hello, please note our scheduled training dates have changed. Generally, we will meet on the first Monday of each month. That being said our first fall program starts at 6:30 October 3, 2016 at the community center. We will open this fall training session with a discussion lead by Commodore\Fleet Captain Barrett on South Sound cruising options for summer 2017. See Vice Commodores comments for more details. The November 7 program will cover two topics. First will be a presentation on how to prepare a “ditch bag” (examples displayed) in case you need to abandon ship. The next exercise will be a break out session separating first mates and skippers to address common questions important to each group: What is your worst fear? What is your most enjoyable activity? What would you like the skipper/first mate to do differently? After 10 minutes we will reconvene and jointly discuss the answers from each group. This will be fun! I am always looking for future program topics you are interested in. How about learning to use a multi meter (volt, ohm meter) to trouble shoot common electrical gremlins? How about tying off lines to dock cleats and docks without cleats? Would you like to practice casting lines and tying a few common knots? If you would like to be a presenter or have a suggestion for a topic, give me a call at (206) 396-3986 or send me an e-mail at jackcheetham5@gmail .com. New Member Coordinator—Valerie Laidley Shelter Bay Yacht Club has new members. Here are our newest members to date. Look for them at our next event and say hello to… Steve and Joyce Sanders. They live at 506 Colville Way in Shelter Bay. Steve and Joyce own a 43’ BayLiner named LA BELLE VITA. They enjoy boating and are experienced boaters with 15 years on the water. They are looking forward to meeting club and community members, joining the club on cruises and attending social events. Let’s welcome them into our Yacht Club family. 3 Rear Commodore—Terry Sigmond Our second dinner after cruising season is Saturday October 15th. Anna and Bill McCall, Larry and Nadine Lien, Bob and Carmen Brecht and Jim and Sherry Granner will be hosting a Western HO Down Square Dancing Pizza Party. They have a very unique evening planned for all of us. I mentioned that you might want to get those Cowgirl and guy Sucia Island outfits out of the closet to square dance.Cruise Anna has planned professional caller Stephen September 9-11, 2016 Cole to help us learn the steps of this original American dance. We will be dining bistro style as the chef prepares 8 delicious types of wood fire pizza right before our very eyes in her wood fired ovens for all of us to enjoy while we watch each other hoot and holler across the dance floor. Registration is open for The October Ho Down online and you must register at www.shelterbayyachtclub.com or call Val Laidley at 425-503-0392 or email Val at [email protected]. Attention! Attention!
