THANK YOU
We convey our deepest appreciation to relatives,
friends and community members for their
expressions of sympathy and cards of condolence
on the loss of our mother, Lorraine Mills. We wish to
especially acknowledge G.R. Carscadden Funeral
Chapel (Moosomin), Westwind Florists (Moosomin)
for the beautiful sunflower arrangements, Rev. Roy
Bortolotto for officiating, Mary Lou Sweeting and the
United Church choir for the lovely music and, finally,
the members of the United Church for preparing and
serving the wonderful lunch after the service. It was
moving to see so many at the funeral and we thank
you all for taking the time to share your memories of
Mom with us. It means a lot.
With warm thanks, The Family of Lorraine Mills
We would like to thank all of those who attended our
40th Anniversary party. We appreciate so many
people taking time from their busy summer
schedules to surprise us! Thanks to our kids for
organizing the event and to everyone who brought
food, worked the bar, sent cards or helped in any
other way!
Bruce and Janet Lemon.
The Sunrise Villa would like to thank everyone for all
of the generous donations made to the Villa . We
appreciate your thoughtfulness!
MARYFIELD AUDITORIUM SAYS THANKS!
The Maryfield Auditorium committee would like to
thank everyone who came out for the 2nd Annual
Poker Derby held on August 22. Although, once
again the weather didn’t cooperate, it was still a
success for the theatre. We had some dedicated
riders that braved the weather, but we also had a lot
of silent riders and hidden hands purchased. Thank
you to everyone who purchased hands, 50/50
tickets and raffle tickets. Thank you to everyone
who donated prizes for the raffle tables. Thank you
to Chuck Dodsworth for helping, and Brendan and
the staff at the Arlington Hotel for letting us invade
the hotel for the day. Thanks to Guild Insurance for
sponsoring the $20,000.00 hidden hand. A huge
thank you to Darryl Rathgeber and Lana Carnegie
for helping us get this started. Congratulations to all
the winners. Let’s hope the weather man
cooperates next year!

Screening Guidelines for Cervical Cancer
The Saskatchewan Cancer Agency’s Prevention
Program for Cervical Cancer has updated its
guidelines. Pap test guidelines were changed to
help make sure women in Saskatchewan continue
to benefit from cervical screening but avoid
unnecessary tests.
Cervical Cancer Screening should begin at age 21
or approximately 3 years after first intimate sexual
activity, whichever occurs later.
Screen every 2 years until 3 consecutive normal
results then extend the screening interval to every 3
years. By getting pap tests at least once every
three years, cervical cell changes can be found
early and, if needed, treated so that cancer does
not develop.
Women older than 69 years who have had a least 3
consecutive satisfactory and negative pap tests in
the last 10 years can discontinue screening.
If you are a resident of Saskatchewan, the
Saskatchewan Cancer Agency’s Prevention
Program for Cervical Cancer will mail you a purple
reminder letter when you are due for your pap test.
For more information please visit http://
www.saskcancer.ca/Cervical%20Guidelines or talk
to your health care provider.
Primary Health Care is about staying healthy, preventing
illness and injury, managing chronic conditions, treating
acute medical illness, promoting healthier living and
accessing the best health provider for the job.
BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE
Thank you to all those who helped with the
gardening this year. Sometimes the rain was
scarce and our watering volunteers were very busy.
Now that our watering group has completed their
season please continue to water your pots if you
want to extend their colourful blooms. Thanks to
those who watch over our flower beds with extra
mowing an weed control. Special thanks to our
student workers Kelly Kay and Brenda Thiessen for
their dedication this past summer. Also thanks to all
those who continue to donate to our committee.
The Maryfield Public Library has received a
$200 grant to conduct a Yarn Bombing Project in
Maryfield. In order to receive the grant it must
be held in conjunction with Cultural Days which
is September 26 and 27. A yarn bombing
committee has been established to carry out this
project.
What is Yarn Bombing? YARN BOMBING is like
graffiti only it is done with yarn instead of paint. It is a
type of street art that is done to surprise and add color
and interest to a public place. Crochet or knitted
sections and/or a wrapping method is used to cover
parts of trees or inanimate objects. Items that are quite
often yarn bombed include fences, benches, bikes,
statues…really the sky is the limit!
When will the Yarn Bombing take place? On
Thursday, Sept. 24 and Friday, Sept 25, the yarn
decorating will hit the town. The displays can be viewed
on the weekend Sept. 26 and 27 and then on Monday,
Sept. 28 the yarn displays will be taken down.
Who can participate? The committee would like
to include as many different age groups as possible.
Some groups are already organizing their projects. A
group is meeting at the Villa on Mondays at 3:00 pm.
Contact Fran Balls if interested or just stop by. There
will be a kids' group meeting at the public library from
3:30-5:00 on Wednesdays Sept 16 and Sept 23. This
group will do spool knitting and loom weaving. Contact
Janet Lemon if interested. Many classes at the school
will also be creating yarn projects. If you would like to
start your own group or do your own projects at home,
feel free to do so.
Where will the bombing appear? Some of the
areas in Maryfield that are to be bombed include: The
wire fences at the Maryfield playground and Co-op, the
railing at the post office, the gazebo and arbors at
Century Gardens, the Lion’s sign, the bench by the store,
the posts on the deck of the Arlington Hotel, the railing
at the restaurant, the wooden fence and wagon at
Memory Lane, the courtyard of Sunrise Villa. When the
bombing is taking place, all participants are to be
respectful of the property in which they are decorating.
Some rules include: keeping the area tidy and picking
up all scraps of yarn, not stepping on plants or flowers
while decorating, ensuring that yarn is not strung in such
a manner that could be dangerous, ( obstructing
walkways, etc.). observing the rules of the site owner,
making the yarn bombing project as attractive and neat
as possible.
Why? If you have any questions, please contact
Janet Lemon 306-646-4604 (home) or 646-7672 (cell).
Other committee members include Laura Low 646-2019,
Fran Balls 646-4324, Jan Percy 646-2014 and Amy Ewart
646- 2031.
We look forward to working with you on this exciting,
creative project! If anyone has balls of yarn, old CDs or
large buttons they could donate please leave them at
the Villa, school or public library.
THANK YOU
FROM THE
MARYFIELD AGRICULTURAL
SOCIETY
The Maryfield Agricultural Society extends a huge
thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate
our 100th Fair.
The day was a great success. We had the largest
crowd and most entries in years, thanks to the help
and support of the community of Maryfield and
surrounding area. It was nice to see so many past
residents of the Maryfield area at the Fair this year.
We want to acknowledge the businesses from
Maryfield who bought ads in our Fair Book. We
would also like to acknowledge the businesses in
the surrounding communities who very generously
support our Fair. We appreciate your generosity as
well as the gracious manner in which you greet our
canvassers.
The Maryfield Lions Club did a wonderful job of
organizing a parade to start Fair Day.
We want to thank Borderland Co-op for once again
donating the supplies for breakfast as well as
sno-cones, cotton candy and tattoos throughout the
afternoon; Horizon Meats for donating the cooking
of the pork we had for supper; Fran Balls, Barb
Swallow and Cindy Cairns for all the work they did
to publish the Fair Book; the Grade 9/10 students
for creating the posters we used to advertise the
Fair; Janet Lemon for organizing another
successful Chili Cook Off; Emma Furnival for
maintaining our Facebook page even from the UK.
The Associated Gospel Church Youth are ‘worth
their weight in gold’. It is always such a pleasure to
work with these cheerful energetic youth -- our
“Clean Team” who helped us set-up, clean-up, take
down – Thank You!
There are so many other volunteers to thank—we
don’t want to leave any out so we’ll just say Thank
You to all who help with the Fair in any way.
The total of the Exhibit Auction proceeds that went
to STARS Air Ambulance was $4575.
The Agricultural Society Directors heard great
comments about the parade. There was wonderful
coverage in the local newspapers, but the directors
did not get to see the parade. If you took pictures
of the parade, could you please pass them on to an
Ag Society member or email them to Freda Hill
([email protected]). The Ag Society directors
are a dedicated group of men and women who
have put their heart and soul into the Fair for many
years. For a number of them, they are following in
the footsteps of their parents and grandparents,
carrying on a family tradition.
