Association of Legal Administrators he Capital Chapter Foundation’s March 22 event proved to be the most successful in the Chapter’s history. A record $51,000 was raised for Emmaus Services for the Aging and the Toni K. Allen scholarship fund. This year’s theme of “Putting on the Ritz” provided inspiration for the evening, and luxury and glamour were evident in everything from the black, white, and silver decorations and top hat confetti to the glittering array of jewelry on display for the silent auction. The Capital Chapter Community Services Committee carefully selected Emmaus Services for the Aging as this year’s charity and the cause touched everyone in the community. The Committee has a structured process by which it chooses a charity to sponsor each year, and the selection process will be detailed in future issues of Capital Connection, as the 2008 charity selection process gets under way. 2007–2008 President-Elect Adrienne Corrothers with husband Eddie. 15TH Annual Fundraiser Proceeds Recipients Toni K. Allen Scholarship Fund For over twenty years, the ALA Capital Chapter Foundation has awarded an annual scholarship to an outstanding senior enrolled in a local high school, who has an interest in pursuing a business or law degree. Students are judged on scholastic achievements, extracurricular activities, community involvement as a volunteer, a written essay describing the student’s personal and career goals, and personal interviews with ALA Capital Chapter members. In 2003, the Foundation renamed its scholarship in memory of Toni K. Allen. Toni was one of the original members of the Foundation. She was also a Past President of the Chapter and made many contributions to ALA on the local, regional and national level. Toni was an advocate for higher education so it is fitting that this scholarship is named in her honor. Emmaus Services for the Aging Improving the Lives of Seniors Since 1978 Dear Friends, On behalf of the seniors, staff and volunteers connected with Emmaus Services for the Aging, I would like to express a sincere appreciation for the relationship that exists with the Capital Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators. The level of your commitment not only allows us to impact the lives of seniors, but helps us to remain a vital entity that meets the needs of the aging population. Eighty percent of the seniors that we serve are at or well below the poverty threshold set by the Department of Health and Human Services. Many of our seniors suffer from disabilities that limit their mobility, and have limited friends or family who are available to provide the necessary support. As a result, these seniors often remain isolated and removed from the services they need to stay active and independent. Emmaus reaches out to build trust with these seniors, providing programs and services to meet the full range of their needs. We help seniors in times of crisis or in times that celebrate the joys of life. Our goal is not just to help seniors survive, it is to help seniors thrive — to help them age with dignity and quality of life regardless of their financial means. ALA Capital Chapter • CAPITALCONNECTION 8 We consider the Capital Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators significant partners that assist us in having a tremendous impact in the lives of our seniors. Your members have provided aid where it was most needed, from expanding and beautifying our Feast for All Market to organizing a food drive to stock the market’s shelves. The support that we receive from your annual fundraiser will assist Emmaus in connecting seniors across the District of Columbia to the necessary resources. Our partnership will help seniors meet their primary needs, live healthier lives, and avoid isolation by forming meaningful friendships with other seniors and volunteers. I am grateful that you have chosen Emmaus Services for the Aging as a Chapter Charity, and I am heartened by your support and your sincere commitment to improving the lives of elderly residents in Washington, D.C. Our founder Dr. Arthur S. Flemming used to say, “An older person deserves a dream, not just a memory.” Thank you for your assistance in turning dreams into reality. Sincerely, Rev. Joseph K.
