As we start out on our next journey around the sun, we do so with a change
with your Board of Directors. After many years of hard work and dedication
to make this club better every year, Patti Myles, your Vice President, who
along with her husband, Rich, have been members of the Board of Directors
since 2000, has resigned from the board for personal reasons. Having served
with her for many years on the Board of Directors, I can say that we will all
miss her as we have all depended on her and respected her opinion on many
issues. We look forward to her being an active member of the club for many
years to come, and I want to thank her for all she has done. With that, we had
to fill the position in accordance with the bylaws. I asked for nominations for
the position and with the Board’s vote, and I am happy to announce that your
new Vice President is Dick Dobkins, who I know will work hard to make
this a great club to be a part of. I hope you will all support Dick in his new
position. With him moving up, this leaves his wife Laura to fulfill their Our Club Mission Statement:
shared board position alone.
The Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club Inc. is a
The Board is back at it and has begun to fill the club’s calendar with a lot of
great events. The calendar will be in this newsletter and on the website soon.
So, check it out and plan your calendar around it in order to be a part of as
much of the fun as you can.

Upcoming Events
We have a lot of fun and exciting events coming up!! Here is a little run-down on a few of what is yet
to come for the Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club!!
Night Golf
You want to have a great time?? Come out to Night Golf at the
Suncoast Golf Center on February 17th from 6-10 p.m.!! This is
a great event whether you are a golfer or not. It is a lighted par
3 course, so come out and have a great time. The cost is $8.00
per golfer. We are allowed to bring our own coolers, and they
sell beer at the course as well. There will be a sign up sheet at
the January social meeting. So, grab your golf bag and cooler
and we will see you there! Suncoast Golf Center is located at
7741 15th Street East in Sarasota.
This is your invitation to take part in a life changing event called “Relay for Life” (RFL). RFL is
an 18 hour journey beginning at 3:00 pm on April 28th and ending on April 29th at 8:00 am. One
member of the team must be on the track at all times, hence the Relay!
There are many ways you can become involved with our team:
• Become a member of the team – last year we had 22 members
• Sign up as a survivor – we celebrate those who have survived this disease.
• Come out and walk a few laps with us the night of the event
• Become a team sponsor
• Donate to a member of our team – each member is required to raise a minimum of
$100.00
• Donate to the team – last year we raised $10,000.00 and our goal is even higher this
year
• Attend the event and give moral support – there are fund raisers going on all evening
and activities you can participate in.
Please stop by our table at the January, February, March and April socials. We will be able to
answer any questions and will have handouts for you to read. To obtain more information, sign
up for the team or to make a donation go to our website at www.relayforlife.org.

Happenings
Did Someone Say, “Happy Hour?”
Cheers everyone and Happy New Year! After another great trip to
Key West for MOTM, we picked up where we left off in our own
piece of paradise with a Happy Hour on November 11th on Bradenton
Beach. About 35 hearty souls gathered on an unusually cold
November night at the Island Bistro Bar. We were treated to a special
Parrot Head menu and drink specials, in addition to some live music.
We will definitely be back to this new spot, hopefully on a warmer
night. On December 9th about 45 of us showed up at the new Bogey's
on South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. We took over the patio area, and
partied the night away. Many of us were the victims of Irish Car
Bombs (no, Murph wasn't blowing up cars in the parking lot), and
they were tasty. Some members’ Moms who were in town were even
rumored to be doing tequila shots! We then did a special, last minute
pre-New Years Eve Happy Hour on December 30th at Turtle Beach
Pub on Siesta Key. Once again, Selwyn Swe showed up! I think this
is his secret island getaway; he must have a vacation place out back!
The Dobkins family finished up their Christmas family and friends
reunion week at the Happy Hour. We even brought in a special guest
musician from Maryland, Mike Mangum, who along with Chris
Sacks and friends had played for us at our Ocean Breeze party in Key
West. It was a great way to finish up the year. On January 6th we
were back on Anna Maria Island for a Happy Hour at Fins, a new
Parrot Head themed bar. About 35 members gathered and listened to
a swing band, who even did a special rendition of Margaritaville in
our honor. We will be back in warmer weather and party on their
deck, as this is definitely a Parrot Head friendly place. Look for our
upcoming Happy Hours in February and March. We have a couple of
surprises planned, including a floating Happy Hour in March with a
very special musical guest from Key West.

First Island Clean Up of 2012
Our first Island Clean Up for the year will be Saturday,
February 11th. We will meet at Bay Island Park at 10:00
a.m. We will be serving donuts and orange juice before
our Parrot Head Navy transports us to Edwards Island and
surrounding islands to clean up debris. It is part of our oath as a
Parrot Head to "clean the beaches!" The County supplies us with
gloves and garbage bags but please dress for the cooler temps.
The directions to Bay Island Park are: from 41, turn west onto
Siesta Drive, cross the bridge and Bay Island Park is on the left.
We will have a sign up sheet at our January Social Meeting or
contact Claudia Benz at [email protected]. Hope to
see you there!
5
At February’s Social Meeting we will be
collecting items for the Humane Society of
Sarasota County. Their wish list includes: dog
and cat beds, dry and canned food for cats and
dogs, cat litter and litter boxes, toys for both
dogs and cats, Frontline, Heartguard, leashes,
pooper scoopers, treats for cats and dogs,
rubbing alcohol, animal crates, baby wipes,
batteries (AA), blankets, bleach, Clorox wipes,
cotton balls, digital thermometers, dishwashing
liquid, latex gloves, and towels. Thanks for
supporting our furry little friends.
Everyone has a Story – A Parrot Head Profile
Phyllis Sasso compares her life to a Reba McIntyre song, “I’m
a Survivor”! She was born a twin, 3 months early, weighing
only 3 lbs. Her twin sister didn’t make it, but she survived. Her
mother passed away when she was 7 years old and her father
passed when she was 13. She was raised by her very strict
grandparents who didn’t believe in laughing and having fun. I
think we all know she not only survived that, but likes to laugh
and have more fun than most people we know! She was in an
unhappy marriage, divorced and raised 4 children as a single
mom. She survived putting 2 children through college while
working a full-time job and a part-time job as a bartender.
During that time, she also went to college. Never having had
college courses in high school, she was fearful. Not only did
she make it through, she graduated Magna Cum Laude!
Phyllis retired from the Department of Mental Retardation in the State of Connecticut after 25 years. She first was a
teacher, than a Case Manager/Social Worker. She moved to Sarasota in 2001 after visiting her brother. She feels the
very best thing she ever did for herself was to join the SBPHC. The members are like a family to her and it has
provided her with so many more opportunities to volunteer in the community. Phyllis is not only a survivor, but at
times an over-achiever. She likes to keep active and believes in giving back. Her volunteer activities include
working at a Food Pantry for people with HIV, she is a Civilian Volunteer for the Police Department, and is a
Eucharistic Minister at St. Martha Church. She is also very involved with the American Cancer Society, and
volunteers endlessly for the SBPHC functions.
In her spare time she has a part-time job cleaning houses for friends – a job that she really loves. Gardening and
landscaping in her yard are a few of her favorite things to do. She has built her own sidewalks and patio with scrap
concrete blocks and even has had a lawn mower run over her knee, but of course she survived that one with no
operations involved!
Phyllis’s life may be like a Reba McIntyre song, but we all know her more as a Bobby McFerrin song – “Don’t
Worry, Be Happy”, for she always has a smile on her face and a song in her heart.

2012 16th SBPHC Birthday Bash
Ladies and gentlemen, mark your calendars! The Sarasota Bay Parrot Head Club 16th
Birthday Bash “The Tiki Bar is Open” is set for
June 8-10th
at Bentley’s Resort in
Osprey! Your Not Bored of Directors is hard at work planning another FIN-tastic party
that you are not going to want to miss. We’ve got a big headliner this year…HOWARD
LIVINGSTON and MILE MARKER 24! We’ve got so many great things in store! Music,
games, amazing auction items, you name it! It’s all going to be part of this big 16th
Birthday Party! Keep your eyes and ears open for more details to come very soon.
Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 band are the
real deal; an all original tropical island band capable of
supporting both small and large events. The band has
recorded five studio CDs filled with over fifty all originals
that always please the crowd. The music of Mile Marker 24
offers universal appeal with an easy going lilt and sway
that celebrates the human spirit while being underscored by
steel drums, guitars, marimba and subtle strings.
Mile Marker 24 has been on the fast track, growing in
popularity from the most popular band in the Florida Keys
to clearly a favorite nationwide.
Livingston's self-released fifth album, Tunes in a Tropical Key, provides the latest example of this carefree
caress. Like his four earlier efforts, Livin’ On Key West Time (2005), Meet Me In The Keys (2006), Blame It
On The Margaritas (2007), and I'm Living on an Island (2008), much of the new album is based on Livingston's
life - the life he loves in the Florida Keys. Songs that share his love for the Florida Keys (It's A Pretty Good
Life), to the humorous (Get Your Own Cousin & Tropical Nightmare). This album joins Livingston's other
albums as a soundtrack to a lifestyle - the lifestyle of flip flops and tank tops!
Livingston and company have become known as a Portable Party Machine supporting corporate events,
weddings, and tropical parties. With the 1952 Johnson outboard motor - turned margarita maker - that became
well known when making margaritas with Al Roker (Today Show), Dave Price (CBS Early Show), Sam
Champion (Good Morning America), and Samantha Brown (The Travel Channel), Livingston performs many
events in the Florida Keys, fairs and tropical parties in the Southeast US, and tours the Midwest and Eastern
USA. He has shared the stage with the likes of Mac McAnally, Little River Band, Cowboy Troy, America,
Jerry Jeff Walker, Hank Williams, Tim McGraw, Big and Rich, and Keith Urban. Livingston has also been a
headliner act at Meeting of the Minds (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010), Jimmy Buffett's annual international fan club
convention.

Christmas in the Caribbean 2011
On Sunday, December 4, 2011 Sarasota
Bay Parrot Head Club held our annual
Christmas Party and Toys for Tots drive at
Sun-N-Fun. We Parrot Heads know how to
Party with a Purpose and our generous
members donated hundreds of toys and
bikes for needy children in the area!
Michael Roselle accepted the toys on
behalf of the Marines and Toys for Tots,
and then we formed a conga line to carry
the toys out to waiting trucks. We enjoyed a
wonderful Christmas meal, cash bar, lots of
laughs with old friends and even made
some new friends while we danced to great
music of Captain Josh and Banjody.
Four
SBPHC
members
received
Recognition Awards for their dedication
and service to the club and our charities.
Congratulations to A.J. Collins, Marla
