The Xi Omicron Chapter
The Xi Omicron Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.’s Semesterly Newsletter Sorors, Parents, Friends, Hello! I hope that your year has been wonderful so far. This year, our chapter decided to start a newsletter that will be sent out semesterly to keep you updated on the events that the Xi Omicron Chapter will be participating in on campus and in the Elon/Burlington community throughout the school year. This first newsletter is to update you on some of the great things the Xi Omicron chapter did this past academic year! This year was a BIG year for Xi Omicron. We recently spent the entitre past year updating, revising, and editing our chapter bylaws. These chapter bylaws had not been updated since 1993 when the Xi Omicron chapter was first chartered here at Elon University This year, we implemented the Sorority’s international service initiative Z-HOPE (Zetas Helping Other People Excel) by implementing 9 Z-HOPE programs throughout the year, including Z- Pack It Up, in which our chapter raised over $1000 in donated school supplies from the Elon Greek Community. This year was also a year of collaboration. Our chapter worked with on an array of programs with the following oraganizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Alpha Xi Delta Sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, Elon’s Finest Dance Troupe, Spectrum, and Students Against Sexual Assualt. This year, the chapter also begain a partnership with St. Matthew’s AME Church (Burlington, NC) by mentoring and helping youth during their weekly Youth Bible Study program. We also helped the church organize and re-build both their youth step team and their youth dance and worship team. This year was also a remarkable year in supporting philanthropic organizations. 4 members of the chapter participated in the 3rd Annual Elonthon, a 24 hour dance marathon to help raise funds to support Duke’s Children’s hosptial. Xi Omicron was recognized as being 1 of the top 5 teams to raise the most money, $290. In November, our brothers of the Alpha Beta Beta chapter of Phi Beta Sigma and our chapter hosted the first Annual Blue and White Ball Semi-Formal: The Masquerade. A portion of the proceeds were donated to the March of Dimes Foundation. On April 30th, the chapter walked in the annual WalkAmerica with our sponsoring Graduate Chapter, Theta Eta Zeta (Thomasville, NC). We would like to thank you all for the support that you have given us this year. Without your continuous support and unconditional love, would not have been able to accomplish so much and reach all of our goals! Thus far, during the spring semester we have completed a total of 188.5 hours of service. This semester we have done service with Loaves and Fishes, St. Matthew's A.M.E. Over 120 grams went out to the finer women of Elon University. On Wednesday we held a Z-Hope program titled “How Crowded is Your Bed?” Promotional efforts, including the title, were met with controversial attention from the University’s community, however the program was still successful. It entailed discussions on STDS, and high and low risk sexual behaviors. This year's Finer Womanhood Week was a learning experience for Xi Omicron. The knowledge gained will be applied next year for a more successful week. Tr e a s u r e r ’ s R e p o r t Budget and Finance Committee: Sor. Kimberly Bowman Sor. Mary Caruso Sor. Valencia Smith This past year we have done a tremendous job in raising our funds. At the beginning of the semester we had little over $40 dollars. We have increased our funds to well over a thousand dollars through various activities and a large part from dues. With this surplus of funds we were able to help pay for five of our sorors to attend this year’s Eastern Regional Conference and pay the initiation fees iino two Greek honor societiesGamma Sigma Alpha (national Greek academic honor society) and Order of Omega (national leadership honor society for fraternity and sorority members)- in which two of our sorors will be inducted into this Spring. Next year, with these funds, we will be able to do even more activities and continue to support each other in our achievements and honors. Sor.
