March Hare The Magazine of the Pullman Gallery Issue No. 48 The Magazine of the Pullman Gallery ‘Mad’ Mixology: a realistically modelled and very heavy gauge solid Sterling silver cocktail shaker in the form of a hare sitting up on its hind quarters, the pull-off head set with glass eyes, and the chained carrot-shaped stopper in his mouth which removes for pouring. Hallmarked Sterling silver 925 and bearing the German maker’s marks for Neresheimer of Germany. Height: 10 inches (26 cms). Ref 5726 Noël Fontanet (Swiss, 1898-1982): ‘1946 Grand Prix Des Nations’. An extraordinarily rare original poster, and one of only three recorded examples, in outstanding condition. The majority of Fontanet’s poster artwork was commissioned for resorts, airlines and cruise ships during the 1930’s, with apparently very little being created for motor-racing or other automobile themes. Conservation linen mounted, framed and glazed. Size: 40 x 28 inches (100 x 70 cms). Ref 5786 Issue No. 48 70 PULLMAN Issue No: 48 Le Plongeur Sous-marin Welcome to the 48th issue of our house magazine, PULLMAN. Feathered or furred, from land or sea, this issue is our most zoological ever, the animal world represented by a very rare silver Hare cocktail shaker of limitless charm and style, a finelydetailed Bergmann-esque bronze crocodile inkwell and a crab centrepiece of such colossal proportions, Ray Harryhausen would be in awe! See page 28 Also featured, an opulent travelling cocktail set by Cartier, in solid Sterling silver and rare in the extreme and of similar calibre, a solid 18ct gold Dunhill ‘Unique ‘A’ Sports’ lighter and pocket watch, with special order engraving, for anyone interested in big game…. The Machine Age aesthetic is represented by a masterful interpretation of the synthesis of man and machine by Frederick C. Focht, with ‘Man in Flight’, and the ‘machine’ itself in an impressive feature of Art Deco posters for Cunard, illustrating the popularity of sea-travel in the 1930s. John Elwell’s exacting large-scale model of the 1955 Mille Miglia-winning Mercedes 300 SLR, as driven by Sir Stirling Moss, graces pages 36 and 37, and leads us into further pages of original automobile artworks, models and toys, from famous names (not limited to) Frederick Gordon Crosby, René Vincent, Geo Ham and (new to our line-up), P. J. Ashmore, with four dynamic original watercolours of the car in motion. See page 40-41 An extraordinary heavy cast bronze sculpture after the legendary comic-book hero, dressed as a scaphandrier (deepsea-diver) holdings his diver’s helmet, the figure standing on a flat, angular plinth and bearing incised numerals VII I XX 15. Charming in the extreme, this fine quality bronze would appear from our research to be a one-off artisanal piece and not associated with or authorised by the estate of Hergé. Ref 5754 Height overall: 12 inches (30 cms). Ever present is master malletier Louis Vuitton, this time in miniature, with a group of trinket boxes in the form of the fullsized originals (class concentrated you may say!), and for the ‘players’ out there, a table top roulette wheel and a transparent table football game, of the sleekest design, just in time for the World Cup (but this tournament can be held in the privacy of one’s own home!). And, as they say, much more besides - so please relax and enjoy our latest issue and of course please refer to www.pullmangallery.com for more information and the rest of our inventory. As always, Rachel Kelly and I are at your disposal for any additional information you may require. (1887-1977) An important 20th Century bronze of a British Infantryman of the Great War by William McMillan, C.V.O., R.A. Signed by the artist in the bronze, 1922. Ref 5739 Height: 14 inches (46 cms). This bronze figure is modelled as a British infantryman heavily equipped for trench duty during the winter months. He wears a Brodie Helmet (introduced in 1915), and a standard issue leather jerkin and trench waders customarily issued to soldiers working in deep water and mud. His equipment comprises a modified 1908 Battle Order, with webbing, haversacks, valise and mess tin. His Short Magazine Lee Enfield .303 calibre rifle with bayonet fixed is slung from his left shoulder. Standing in a confident pose with thumbs tucked into the rifle sling and webbing, this bronze exudes a calm workmanlike authority amidst the mentally and physically testing conditions of the trenches that the sculptor knew first hand. Born in Aberdeen, McMillan, was the son of a master engraver and printer, and received his early professional training at Aberdeen’s Gray’s Art School before attending the Royal College of Art where the creator of the Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner C.S. Jagger was also a student. McMillan also studied in Italy as did Jagger until interrupted by the outbreak of war in August 1914. Both men responded by volunteering for officer training in the Artists’ Rifles, the London based Territorial regiment that had started as a volunteer corps in 1860 and had once included Rossetti, Leighton and Millais among its members. Jagger, being among the first to join, was commissioned into the Worcestershire Regiment in time to take part in the Gallipoli campaign. McMillan received his commission in the 5th Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry on 5 December 1915 having crossed to France in August of the same year, and probably having spent the intervening period in the notorious ‘bullring’ training grounds of Etaples transit camp. An eminent and accomplished sculptor of statuary, his works are to be found in various London locations including Trafalgar Square (the East Fountain and Admiral Beatty), Carlton House Terrace (H.M King George II), Whitehall (Sir Walter Raleigh) and Heathrow Airport (Sir John Alcock and Sir Arthur Brown). 24 PULLMAN Issue No: 48 www.pullmangallery.com 25 German Precision British Bravado Lange and Söhne: a scarce Luftwaffe pilot’s watch of 1941 vintage in fullyserviced order, produced for officers by A. Ref 5779 www.pullmangallery.com 27 Frederic Focht (1879-1937) ‘Man in Flight’: an undisputed master of Art Deco sculpture on a grand scale, Frederic C. Focht created this spectacular bronze around 1930. Vividly rendered in dark green patine, this imposing bronze depicts a highly stylized speed god, supported by another crouching male, both atop a globe, in turn mounted on its original stepped nero portoro marble plinth. Signed FOCHT in the bronze. Ref 5773 Height: 42 inches (107 cms). Frederic C. Focht was born in Paris and studied under the celebrated sculptor Falguiere. His remarkable talent was recognised early in his career, exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français and winning the coveted Medal of Honour at the tender age of 21. Focht was responsible for some of the most striking Art Deco bronzes of the 1920s and 1930s and apparently his creative talents did not end there, he is also recorded as having been an opera singer of some note. Fascinated by the link between human form and stylized machine, his bronzes have depicted speed gods evolving into aircraft, semi-abstract automobiles and locomotives. 28 PULLMAN Issue No: 48 Close-up Detail www.pullmangallery.com 29 30 PULLMAN Issue No: 48 A.M. ‘Cassandre’ (Adolphe Mouron, 1901-1968): ‘The Continent via Harwich (Day and Night Services). Ref 5797 Signed John Elwell and numbered 1/1. English, 2014. The Mille Miglia (Thousand Miles) race was an open-road endurance race which took place in Italy between 1927 and 1957. Unlike modern-day rallying where cars are released at one minute intervals with the more powerful cars going before the slower cars, in the Mille Miglia, the smaller and less powerful cars started the race first. From 1949 cars in the race were assigned numbers according to their start time. For example, in 1955, this, the powerful 300 SLR was numbered 722, because it left Brescia at 7:22 am whilst the first cars in the race had started at 9 pm the previous evening. Regarded as the pre-eminent, pioneer British automotive and aeronautical artist, he was responsible for some of the most striking and dramatic motor-racing and aviation paintings and illustrations. His most prolific and commercially successful period commenced in the 1920s, when engaged by ‘The Autocar’ magazine as house artist, responsible for producing artistic accounts of the great British and Continental motor races for weekly publication in the magazine. This earned him great respect within the motor-racing community of the day. Known to his friends as ‘Gorby’ and usually dressed in ‘plus-fours’, Crosby enjoyed a long and successful career as artist, illustrator, designer and sculptor right up until his untimely death in 1943. ‘1931 Le Mans 24 Hour Race: Earl Howe and ‘Tim’ Birkin in their victorious 8-c Alfa Romeo’. The journalist was lucky to survive the experience without serious injury, or worse. Sydney Charles Houghton Davis (1897-1981), affectionately known as ‘Sammy’, was a ‘racing motorist’ of some attainment and Sports Editor of Autocar. It is above all for his long association with the weekly journal that he is chiefly remembered. Taking to the Brooklands banking in a ‘Mountain’ Handicap at the 1931 Easter meeting in a Frederick Gordon Crosby (1885-1943) made legitimate claim to being the foremost motoring artist of the inter-war years. No one of his generation has been more respected by his peers, nor has remained more influential in automobile art. A prolific and innovative illustrator, Crosby worked principally for Autocar and an enduring 42 PULLMAN Issue No: 48 friendship developed between the two men. Crosby has been described as ‘splendidly three-dimensional’ and his gift to his old friend, confined to a hospital bed, captures so precisely the vintage race car at speed. The sporting model depicted, of indeterminate provenance, provided a subject for speculation (MG, Riley and even ERA influences were suggested) but – when the past is discussed – who ever agrees? His works - whether automotive or fashion - are imbued with a sense of living and high style, a personal philosophy which Vincent himself followed all his life.
