2 What is the Challenge?

DFSMShsm is a complex environment which requires constant
maintenance and corrective actions.

Ever increasing DFSMShsm problems, errors and ever-growing
CDS’s:










Migration/Recall failures
Backup/Recover failures
Tapes cannot be recycled
Tapes lost
Data migrated without a backup
Data migrated over 10 years ago and never recalled
Data thrashing
Migration and backup windows too small
DASD volumes over-allocated
A lack of HSM reporting tools
What is the Solution

IBM has created a process where trained technical staff are prepared
to go on-site to collect key DFSMShsm data, and perform an analysis
of a customer’s storage environment.

The health-check will identify where hardware and software are being
wasted.

The health-check will help you understand the overall health of your
DFSMShsm environment.

The health-check can help reduce a company’s overall carbon foot
print.
4 Who can take advantage of a Health-check?
  Any mainframe installation running DFSMShsm
  There are NO size (MIPs, MSUs) requirements
  Large, Medium or Small
  Any site with mainframe storage
  Physical Tape, Virtual Tape, or DASD
5 The IBM DFSMShsm Health Check Software
  IBM software will need to be installed.
  Tivoli Advanced Audit for DFSMShsm
  Audit all DFSMShsm Control Data Sets
  Migration Control Data Sets (MCDS)
  Backup Control Data Sets (BCDS)
  Offline Control Data Set (OCDS)
  Audit DFSMShsm owned tapes
  Audit Tape Management Database (RMM, CA1, TLMS,
Control/M-Tape)
  Tivoli Advanced Reporting for DFSMShsm
  Reporting on all DFSMShsm activity, both current and historical
  Report on Files Accessed
  Report on Migration Control Data Set (MCDS)
  Report on Backup Control Data Set (BCDS)
  Report on DFSMShsm LOGy and LOGx Data Sets.
6 Other Requirements?
  What other actions or requirements will be needed of the
customer?
  Very little
  TSO/ISPF terminal
  2 hours of HSM administrators time
  HSM data set names
  Tape Management System information
  All data collection will be completed by the assigned
Technician assigned to the project.
  All data collected will be kept strictly confidential.
7 What Other Information Will Help
  To Assist with accurate reporting, we would like to
understand a little of the customer’s environment:
  DASD
  DASD
  Total size of installation
  Total number of DASD boxes
  DASD manufacturer and model
  Tape
  Type of hardware
  CPU
  Physical or Virtual
  Total hardware available
  Manufacturer and model
  Number of LPARs
  Total installation MIPs
  Cost per MIP
  MIPs allocated to DFSMShsm
  Software
8   Tape Management System
  Security
The DFSMShsm Health Check Report
  Overall CDS Health -
  Errors found and reported
  CDS historical reporting
  Old data, unreferenced data, data at risk
  DFSMShsm Tapes –
  Tapes in error
  Tape lost
  DFSMShsm Work –
  Scheduled
  Requested
  Successful
  Unsuccessful
  Reduce or free-up hardware
9   Help reduce costs and reduce your Carbon Footprint
The DFSMShsm Health Check Report (continued)
  DASD Storage
  Overall Storage Health –
  Volume Level
  Over allocated volumes
  Under allocated volumes
  Pool Level -
  Over allocated pools
  Under allocated pools
  Data Set Level
  Over allocated data sets
  Under allocated data sets
  Incorrectly defined data sets
  Data sets at risk
  Reduce or free-up hardware -
  Help reduce costs and reduce your Carbon Footprint
10 What Is The Cost?
This Is A Free Analysis – There are No Costs Involved! 11 12 Health Summary Report
Primary data set analysis
• Max Extent – Risk if data sets at 16 extents
• GT 12 Extents – Growth is available but at a critical level
• Unknown DSORG – wasting primary storage space
• Empty data sets – wasting primary storage space
• Multi-volume – could have negative affect at DR tests
Unreferenced Data
250,000
200,000
150,000
100,000
50,000
Migrated Data without backup
Primary to ML1 DASD
Recall from L2 to Primary
HSM Dataset Thrashing
A data set that was created 2 weeks ago and migrated and recalled 2 times
would be assigned a thrashing index value of 7.
A data set that was created 1 week ago and migrated 3 times would be assigned
a thrashing index value of 8.
A data set that was migrated and recalled every day would be assigned a
thrashing index of 9

22 What Will You Know?
  What information will you know from the analysis?
23 
Once the complete analysis is completed a multi-page report will be
made available to the customer detailing the findings with supporting
graphs and technical evaluation. The report will also include costs
and savings, these numbers are based upon a generic industry
hardware and software estimates.

The final report can be reviewed with the customer by the Account
Manager, Technical Engineer or Manager of the Health Analysis
Team. Any questions customer have will be discussed, answered
and agreed.
What You Will Know? (continued)
  What information will you know from the
analysis?
  Customers should have a good understanding of the following
  Storage
  What immediate estimated hard dollar savings they can expect by

better management of hardware
  DASD hardware
  Tape
What immediate estimated soft dollar savings they can expect by
better management of hardware
  DASD hardware resource maintenance
  Tape resource maintenance
  CPU Usage
  An estimate of costs for DFSMShsm work
  Successful/Unsuccessful for each HSM task
  Overall Control Data Health
  An understanding of the Errors Vs Healthy HSM controlled data
24 HSM & Storage Solutions
