2013 Cadkin Youth
Leadership Internship
Do you
know an
outgoing and
caring college
student who
wants to work
and learn at
Montefiore
this summer? Applications are now being
accepted for the Cadkin Youth Leadership
Internship at Montefiore. This summer
internship offers a college student the
opportunity for leadership development
and experience in intergenerational
programming.
The Cadkin Youth Leadership Intern
interacts with junior volunteers and seniors
in a Jewish environment committed to
caring, compassion and customer service.
The internship runs from mid-May through
mid-August.
In addition to serving as an
ambassador for Montefiore in the
community, the Cadkin Youth Leadership
intern will:
•a
ssist in administering all aspects of
Montefiore’s Junior Volunteer Program;
•p
lan and publicize special events;
• c oordinate staff requests with volunteer
interests and talents;
• f oster positive relationships between
seniors and young adults.
Applicants must be in college or
entering college in the coming fall. We
are seeking students that are dynamic
and personable, knowledgeable about
the Jewish community, organized and
computer proficient, have excellent
communication skills and enjoy working
with elderly and youth.
A completed application and two
letters of reference are required for
consideration. Applications are available at
Montefiore or online at montefiorecare.org.
Applications are due by Monday,
April 22, 2013.
For more information, please
contact Mary Kate Hageman, volunteer
coordinator at 216.910.2566 or e-mail
[email protected].
Summer College Internships Available
Do you know college students looking for some hands-on experience this
summer? Montefiore may be the place for them. With the tight job market,
this type of work experience can distinguish a candidate looking to break into a
professional field. We are offering six-week, 30-hour a week internships with a
small stipend.
If you know someone who is interested in learning about development
and fundraising, marketing and public relations, human resources, activities,
social services or finance, have them contact Katherine Perry, HR assistant
at 216.910.2497 or e-mail [email protected]. Put ‘Summer Intern
Candidate’ in subject line. Click on Careers, then go to Apply Online. All applicants
will be screened and asked for two letters of reference. Deadline is April 22, 2013.
Summer Junior Volunteer Program
Montefiore is seeking junior volunteers ages 12 and up to assist with
resident activities and services, friendly visiting and office work. Here is your chance
to meet other teen volunteers from a variety of schools and communities, all
while earning service hours in a Jewish environment committed to caring,
compassion and customer service.
Volunteers will need to call in for a brief interview and go through the
application process, which includes providing one reference and completing an
orientation and training session. Please contact Mary Kate Hageman, volunteer
coordinator at [email protected] or call 216.910.2566.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS AND
UPCOMING EVENTS
I am happy to share
with you that 2013 started
out on an uplifting note –
Montefiore received a
zero-deficiency survey from
the Ohio Department of
Health for the third year in
a row. We are amongst the
top 5% of nursing homes in the country to
have this designation. Four surveyors for four
days scrutinized our entire facility including
all clinical and operational systems under a
survey process called QIS (Quality Indicator
Survey). I am sure you join me in celebrating
this good news (see page 16).
Reaching New Heights, the theme for
our annual meeting on Wednesday, May
22, 2013 at 7 pm at Montefiore, exemplifies
all that we strive to do on a daily basis and
all that we hope to achieve in the months
and years ahead. You will learn about our
accomplishments this past year, honor an
individual with the Harley I. Gross Presidential
Award, meet new board members and be
part of board elections, employee awards
and scholarships and hear from Steve
Willensky, board chair.
I would like to personally invite you to
our 130th Anniversary Celebration,
A Grand Affair, on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at
6 pm at Landerhaven. This special evening
features a cocktail reception, elegant dinner,
concert with Broadway star and entertainer
extraordinaire Michael Cavanaugh, live auction
and more – all to benefit Montefiore’s Maltz
Hospice and Palliative Care Pavilion, our lifeaffirming community hospice which we will
break ground for in mid-June (see pages 8-9).
We will also honor our distinguished past
board chairs – whose vision and exemplary
leadership helped shape who we are today –
through a touching video.
As we will report at the annual meeting,
in order to continue all the great work
that we do and continue our high level
programming, we need your ongoing
support to ensure Montefiore’s success now
and in the future. One way is to contribute
to our Annual Campaign. It’s a wonderful
way to honor a loved one or acknowledge
someone for a job well done. Thank you for
your support!
Donors are able to target their gift to
the area of greatest need (unrestricted) or to
one of six programmatic priorities. Although
unrestricted dollars allow us the greatest
flexibility, we recognize that some donors
prefer to focus their gift on areas which are
nearest to their hearts. Call The Montefiore
Foundation at 216.910.2350 or go to
montefiorecare.org to print out a form and
mail it to the Montefiore Foundation.
We look forward to seeing you at our
Annual Meeting on May 22 and at our
130th Anniversary Celebration on June 9th!

MESSAGE FROM
RABBI JOEL CHAZIN
PASSOVER AND PERSERVERANCE
The art of perseverance is
the art of seeing something
through, of overcoming every
obstacle, the tenacity to hold
on when all seems lost.
If there is any holiday
which has helped our people
to persevere, it is Passover. It is the story
of our conquest of ruthless tyranny, our
yearning to be ourselves and reach the
shores of freedom.
“For not only one rises against us to
destroy us. In every generation they rise
against us to destroy us, and the Holy One
Blessed Be He, saves us from their hand.”
For literally thousands of years we have
celebrated the Passover, invited the poor, or
guests to our table, recited the “This is the
bread of poverty that our forebears ate in
the land of Egypt…”; invited our children
to take an interest in what is happening.
The warmth and wonder of the Seder
which we have celebrated for centuries and
longer is proof that our people have been
able to withstand the rigors and harshness
of persecution and expulsion through the
ages.
Can we take it? Do we have the stuff?
When one looks at how we have shaped
and illustrated the Haggadah through
hundreds of years, the answer has to be
Yes! Yes, we do experience pain today…
and loneliness. But I believe that the rising
of the sun and the occasion of each new
day brings a blessing – the blessing of
possibility, of a day with less pain and more
humanity and the possibility of joy, the joy
of simply living.
And when one examines the haggadot
of centuries past… and sees husband and
wife at the table… in medieval dress… and
when one looks at dozens of haggadot
like it, through the ages, all celebrating the
Passover feast, one has to conclude… this is
a people that can endure.
May you all enjoy the fullness and
strength of the Passover holiday.
A Joyous Passover to all!

The Willensky Residence,
An Assisted Living Memory Care Community
Montefiore is pleased to
announce an extraordinary bequest
from Judy and Steven Willensky. This
legacy gift will name Montefiore’s
new assisted living memory care
pavilion The Willensky Residence,
An Assisted Living Memory Care
Community.
Both Judy and Steve play vital
roles on the Montefiore board
of directors. In addition, Steve’s
inspirational leadership as chair of
the board of directors helped make
the new memory care residence a
reality. Their bequest will continue
to position Montefiore as a leader
in senior healthcare and wellness
services in northeast Ohio.
According to Montefiore
President and CEO Lauren Rock,
“We are so appreciative of Steve and
Judy’s generosity and foresight. They
truly epitomize the tangible meaning
of philanthropy and visionary board
leadership. Not only are we fortunate
that Steve is our board chair, but
that Judy too, is a strong leader and
true friend of Montefiore. There is
nothing like The Willensky Residence
in the area. It sets us apart from
other senior housing campuses and
is a much-needed service line to our
continuum of care. This generous
bequest strategically positions
Montefiore for future endeavors to
meet the challenging and changing
needs of the communities we serve.”
Steve Willensky added, “We are
so thrilled to help Montefiore meet
this critical community need and are
proud to have our name associated
with such a beautiful and warm
assisted living residence. Everything
is perfect down to the last detail, but
what makes it truly special, are the
continuous activities and tailored
memory stimulation programs
developed by world-class experts that
engage our seniors and improve their
quality of life.”
The Willensky Residence is an
innovative addition to Montefiore’s
continuum of services by providing
individuals with early- to mid-stage
dementia who need assisted living
and memory care support.
With six studio rooms and two
suites – each with a private bathroom
and shower, plus shared common
spaces – the residence includes a cozy
living room with bookshelves and
fireplace, a quiet room and a multisensory room for stimulation of the
five senses. Additionally there is a
fully-equipped laundry room. Off of
the spacious dining/activity room is a
lovely and secure courtyard garden
with a walking path and seating
areas. There is a separate and secure
entrance and ample parking for easy
access when visiting a loved one. This
intimate and caring environment
offers around-the-clock staffing and
individualized programming with
dementia-certified staff to keep
residents as independent, engaged
and active as possible.

manager at 216.910.2323 or e-mail

MONTEFIORE
FOUNDATION
BRINGING 2012 TO A CLOSE
As I write this column in early
February, snow is falling and the
temperature is 18 frigid degrees! Spring
can’t come soon enough for me, and
with it, the fulfillment of a labor of
love – the completion of the capital
campaign and the groundbreaking for
the Maltz Hospice and Palliative Care
Pavilion! We are so very grateful to the
Maltz Family Foundation for their $1.5M
lead gift and the 59 additional capital
donors who have already supported this
project with $650,000. Their generous
philanthropy will help build a lifeenhancing space worthy of Montefiore’s
long-respected program, Vinney Hospice
and Palliative Care. If you have been
thinking about pitching in yourself,
please let me count the ways!
You may still join those who have
named rooms or contributed to the
building fund – please see pages 8-9
of the new floor plan and additional
naming opportunities, then call me right
away at 216.910.2633 to explore further
options. Another way to participate
in this transformational initiative is to
attend Montefiore’s 130th Anniversary
Celebration, A Grand Affair!! Who
doesn’t love a party, and this one will
be historic! We are honoring thirteen
distinguished leaders: Alvin Barkley, Joel
Garver, Lois Goodman, Harley Gross,
Andrew Hoffmann, Susan Hurwitz, Hal
Myers, Elmer Paull, Elaine Rocker, Don
Scherzer, Harvey Siegel, Sally Wertheim
and Darrell Young with a brief and
touching video. Co-Chairs Elaine Gilbert,
Margo Vinney, Joyce Wald and Judy
Willensky are working hard to ensure
that you’ll have a great time on Sunday,
June 9, 2013 at Executive Caterers at
Landerhaven.
We will entertain you with a
fabulous dinner, the music of Michael
Cavanaugh, Tony- and Grammynominated star of Broadway’s Movin’
Out,
t unique auction packages and much,
much more! We keep hearing that
Michael Cavanaugh sings Billy Joel and
Elton John better than the originals –
now that I have to see and hear! By now
you should have received our Save the
Date postcard, with the event invitation
following soon. Your attendance at $250
per person supports the Maltz Hospice
and Palliative Care Pavilion with a tax
deductible donation of $150. You can
also sponsor tables of 10 beginning at
$2500, purchase an ad in the tribute
book for a fully tax deductible $250
or more, list your name in the tribute
book @ $130 (also tax deductible) and
if attending the event, you’ll have the
chance to purchase unique auction
packages and/or hospice beds during
Bob Hale’s amazing “speed auction.” If
you can’t attend, please consider making
a donation of any amount to make this
dream a reality!
Hoping to see you on June 9, if not
sooner.
Bev

There Are Many Ways to Say Thank You…
There is nothing more gratifying to our staff members than the recognition and appreciation
of a job well done. More than fifty-five donors have supported The Weils Staff Appreciation
Fund so far this year in honor of our hard-working and dedicated staff at The Weils. If you
would like to make a donation to either The Weils or Montefiore Staff Appreciation Funds,
please visit montefiorecare.org or call 216.910.2350.

D ON AT E N OW – GO TO M ON TEF I ORECARE.ORG
As you may have heard
by now, Montefiore was
recently recognized for overall
excellence by receiving a
“deficiency-free” survey from
the Ohio Department of Health
for the third year in a row!
This wonderful vote of confidence in our
work stretches from our rehabilitation, to
our social services, to our resident activities.
Similarly, donors have been recognizing
the breadth of our excellence by making
generous and meaningful gifts to our annual
fund throughout the year.
You can make an annual fund gift to
the areas of greatest need (unrestricted),
or you can designate your gift to the
area that is most important to you. The
six areas of designation are: memory
care, hospice and palliative care, religious
programming, rehabilitation services, The
Weils, and resident activities. Which area
of our important work do YOU most want
to support? I encourage you to make a gift
to the annual fund at montefiorecare.org
or by calling Aileen Varga, Foundation
administrative assistant, at 216.910.2350.
As always, I welcome the opportunity
to talk to you about planned gifts, named
funds, capital gifts, and other ways to
support the ongoing work of Montefiore
and The Weils. I can be reached at
kcole@montefiorecare.org or 216.910.2652.
Appreciatively yours,
Kim

Designed to create a calm and comforting environment for patients and families experiencing
end-of-life issues, this welcoming addition to Montefiore will provide life-affirming communal
spaces to support Vinney Hospice and Palliative Care of Montefiore.
Six dedicated hospice house suites and six dedicated palliative/skilled suites—all with private
bathrooms—share cozy gathering spaces including living rooms, dining areas and a kitchen.
Art, music, massage and Reiki therapies will be offered throughout the pavilion and/or in patient rooms;
an interactive play area will enhance visits with children and grandchildren; a consultation room will
double as an overnight option for family; a meditation room will be available 24/7; and a meeting room
will be used by bereavement groups and hospice volunteers. With its own private entrance and ample
parking, the pavilion can welcome family and friends visiting loved ones any time of the day or night.
For over 20 years, Montefiore’s outstanding hospice team has provided
compassionate care for community members during the most challenging times of
their lives. For this dedicated team, the pavilion is a dream come true.

Montefiore President and CEO Lauren Rock
Elected Secretary of LeadingAge Ohio –
Statewide Aging Services Association
Lauren B. Rock,
President and CEO of
Montefiore, was recently
elected Secretary of the
LeadingAge Ohio Board of
Directors. Lauren is serving
her first three year term as
a member of LeadingAge Ohio Board of
Directors. As a board member, she assists
in establishing policy as well as helping to
monitor the overall performance of the
statewide association. As Secretary, she
will be responsible for documenting the
proceedings of the board and association.
“With an increasing population
of older and disabled Ohioans, it is
especially critical that quality services
are available to meet housing, health
and service needs,” she said. “In spite
of many challenges facing all providers
of senior services, there are tremendous
opportunities to innovatively meet the
needs of one of our most vulnerable
populations. I look forward to working
with my peers to meet these needs while
sharing the great work of Ohio’s not-forprofit providers of senior services.”
Lauren is also spearheading board
efforts in steering the association’s
response to new state statutes and
regulations implementing managed care
standards for Medicaid recipients.

Montefiore Receives Perfect Survey
from the Ohio Department of Health
for the Third Year in a Row
For the third year in a row, the Ohio Department of Health
(ODH) rated Montefiore as “deficiency free” in health
services after spending four days in the facility examining the
care provided by Montefiore over the past year. A team of
four surveyors observed medication pass, treatments, rehab
services, kitchen operations, housekeeping, maintenance,
social services, human resources, dietician services, dining
services, staff development, and activities as well as
interviewed staff, residents and family members.
In addition, the surveyors examined medical records
and other documentation required by long-term care
regulations. They scrutinized the entire facility including all
clinical and operational systems under a survey process called
QIS (Quality Indicator Survey). These annual inspections
are conducted to ensure compliance with Medicare and
Medicaid requirements.
“This is a wonderful achievement. It reflects our team’s
continued hard work and a disciplined focus on outcomes
and continuous improvement. We are on a clear path to
excellence,” explained Lauren B. Rock, Montefiore President
and CEO, adding, “Staying true to our values of Teamwork,
Excellence, Dedication, Respect, Integrity and Innovation will
help us stay this course.”

Meet the Team (Con’t. from page 14)
Margie Roberts-Brown, LNHA, MBA, RRT is the new
Director of Post-Hospital Care Services & Programming.
Margie came to Montefiore as an Administrator-InTraining (AIT) in January 2012. After completing her AIT,
she joined Montefiore’s team as Medicaid Liaison and
Clinical Implementation Lead for our new electronic
medical record. Margie received her license as a Nursing
Home Administrator last June. She received her MBA from
Cleveland State University and is a registered respiratory therapist.
Previously, Margie served as the Director of Critical Care and Respiratory
Therapy Operations and as the Administrator for Cardiothoracic
Anesthesiology at Cleveland Clinic for many years.
Ari Hyman, LNHA

served as an Administrator-In-Training. After receiving his
Administrator’s license, he transitioned into his current roles
of AOD (Answers On Demand) Implementation Specialist
and Admissions Team Member.
In his new role as Operations Manager, Ari will be
supervising the purchasing and information technology
departments and will serve as the new HIPAA Privacy Officer. He will manage
Montefiore’s contracts and oversee ancillary usage and cost containment
strategies. Ari will partner with our dietary contractor to improve resident
