April 18, 2013 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | 3 Psalm 91 House Ghost town The new Fluvanna County High School is a sight to behold and we would love to know that the students offered all of this state-of-the-art appreciate and are inspired by it. It seems it wasn’t enough to burden the taxpayers with the school, but the school board continues to want more. We have a small group of pupils who are not a burden on the system as they are home schooled. They are counted when funding is determined, but they are not a drain on the system. Those students are not taking up classroom space or adding to transportation costs. None of the typical expenses are felt in the schools, so where is all that extra money? We all pay our property taxes, a portion of which goes to the schools. The public school system is not a membership organization, but those pupils who are home schooled are treated as if it is. Home-schooled students are not allowed to participate in any school activity or sport and can’t even use the library! As taxpayers who do not have children in the Fluvanna County system, we maintain our right to speak out against this dark ages thinking. Within a group of friends, the comment was made that none of us is aware of a single person of notoriety produced by the Fluvanna County schools… outside the criminal justice system! We have bright young people who are not in the system who deserve the same rights and privileges as those sitting inside the public classrooms. The school’s sports department could use a little help too. Raising taxes is not the answer to quality education (that is our goal, right?) Will taxes be raised so high that Fluvanna County becomes a ghost town? – Jeane and Ed Illsche, Palmyra I wanted to thank you for publishing the article about Psalm 91 House and our Spa Day fundraiser! We raised $3,400. We could not have done it without the unbelievable outpouring of community support. A tithe of $340 has been sent to the A21Campaign, a global ministry fighting human trafficking. The rest is being used to create a local non-profit transition home for women and children in need. Psalm 91 House will be a safe place to find rest and restoration for those who need it most. In His Word, God promises to protect those who seek His shelter: “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty… He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge.” Psalm 91:1 & 4 This is the vision, providing refuge from life’s storms. Psalm 91 House has many people to thank. I would like to mention the businesses that supported our first event in February. They include Classic Impressions, Ltd.; Lake Chiropractic; Villa Nova’s; Christiane’s Creations; Evolve Hair Design; CK Jewelers; Dogwood Café; Mobile Massage for Life; Jefferson Pharmacy; Effort Baptist Church; and so many more individual volunteers creating and donating raffle items, doing nails and hair, making appointments, answering phones, selling food, providing health screening, and setting up and cleaning and so much more. I wish I could list every amazing person who came to help or came to be pampered for a great cause. But I hope this big thank you will reach everyone. We will be looking forward to more fundraising and many more opportunities to help. I am forever grateful. Please be in prayer for all that is to come for this community outreach. – Jenny Cassell Faulknier, Scottsville Rotary Club gives money to schools Photo by Kristin Sancken Members of the Fluvanna Rotary Club presented a check for $1,638.50 to the Fluvanna County High School athletic department at Wednesday’s (April 10) school board meeting. Principal James Barlow and Athletic Director Scott Morris received the check. Rotary club members asked for donations outside of local grocery stores Thoughtful people I was diagnosed with acute myloid leukemia in early 2012 and received preparatory treatments for a stem cell transplant at The University of Virginia Medical Center from June to September. In September, I was transferred to the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Massey Cancer Center in Richmond for the transplant. My wife and I were there from September through mid-March. I am happy to report that the treatments, while still continuing, are heading in the right direction. During our stay in Richmond, the outpouring of friendship, telephone calls, and prayers from our many friends at Lake Monticello and the surrounding Fluvanna County to raise the money, which will be used to buy an automated external defibrillator (AED), a portable electronic device that treats cardiac emergencies. “We truly hope they never have to use it,” said Rotary representative Arthur Haaxma. “But, if they do, it’s there now.” – Kristin Sancken area helped immensely in our back to health journey. Words cannot begin to express our deep appreciation for so many thoughtful people. While we could not begin to repay the kindness which was extended to us by this community, we shall never forget what a caring and supportive group of people we live among. Thanks to you all. – Mike and Dana Lee, Palmyra Correction: Christina Dimeo Guseman wrote the articles on the Fluvanna Board of Supervisor’s meeting in the April 11 issue. The School Board must decide if the buildings will be kept under school board ownership or declared as surplus and returned to the county. “Members of the community have approached us with ideas of what they want to do with the buildings,” said Superintendent Gena Keller. A few churches have asked for the use of Columbia, while another group is interested in retrofitting Cunningham for adult use as a law enforcement training facility. “The encouraging piece is that at least there is interest.” However, leasing the buildings while they are still under school ownership may not be a winning deal for the school board. The extra supplies within the two schools will also need to be properly stored, given away or sold. “We want to have smart parameters about the furniture that we do need. Peter & Paul breaks ground for new worship space BY PAGE H. GIFFORD, CORRESPONDENT Church members gathered for the ground breaking. In order to be in compliance with the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, Fluvanna Public Schools will raise all of their school meal prices by 10 cents next year. “We’ve been a little hesitant and drug our feet not to raise [lunch] prices, just in sensitivity to what people were facing in the economy. But we have to be in compliance,” said Superintendent Gena Keller. Elementary school lunches will go from $2.15 to $2.25 and high school lunches will go from $2.40 to $2.50. The Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010 requires that all schools that charged less than $2.59 for paid lunches (not including free and reduced lunches) are required to adjust their price to cover the difference. However, the law also caps the required increase in lunch prices at ten cents in any year. For the next two school years, lunches will go up by 10 cents, to meet the $2.59 “lunch equity” figure. Fluvanna County Public Schools is struggling with the credit system that its food service department uses. Many children charge the food they receive 6 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | April 18, 2013 at school to an account, billed to their parents. However, parents have no way of checking their account balance electronically, often leading to escalating, unpaid bills. “Some children have charged a tremendous amount, we’re working to make sure that parents are aware of what’s going on,” said Keller. “When you get into lots of dollars, it becomes quickly unmanageable and people become blindsided.” The schools have tried counseling parents who qualify to apply for free and reduced lunch, which would provide the school with more federal funding to pay for lunches, but, as School Board Chair Camilla Washington says, “It’s a touchy subject.” “If you look at the application itself, it can be very intimidating. [Parents] could certainly just throw it in the trash rather than ask for some help to fill it out,” said Washington. According to Keller, school counselors will be on hand to help students and families confidentially discuss how to pay for school lunches or apply for assistance. Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church broke ground for their new parish and education center on Sunday, April 14. Since its beginning in the mid 1980s, the congregation of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church has grown. To accommodate its growing parish and to expand its ability to meet the needs of the Catholic community, it was decided that a new worship space needed to be built. Over the last several years, parishioners recognized the need for a Parish Life and Education Center and a Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery. The parishioners identified the needs of their church in a 2010 survey. The most urgent requests from parishioners were for providing more class rooms and meeting rooms for their expanding religious education and youth programs and ministry teams. Moreover, they wanted to create a more welcoming atmosphere for gatherings and fellowship and to eventually add a cemetery. The cost of this new addition is an estimated $2.2 million. The general capital campaign titled Building Our Future-United in Christ began with a presentation by Father Gerald Musuubire, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul, and the Photo by Pam Dempsey capital campaign chair. After thoroughly analyzing the future needs, environmental impact and Sts. Peter and Paul’s available land, the building committee-along with the Diocese--commissioned an architectural firm to design a plan which has been approved by Fluvanna County and the Diocese of Richmond. The design consists of a 10,00012,000 square foot Parish Life and Education Center. The parish hall includes a kitchen, storage, a lobby and a restroom. There will be 10 to 12 religious education classrooms and team ministry meeting rooms as well as a youth center. In the last phase of building they will add the cemetery, which will feature 1,200 plots and a columbarium of 200 Niches. A columbarium is a place to store urns containing cremated remains of the deceased. “This new building will allow us to meet the religious and educational needs of all parishioners--from our newborns to seniors--and to meet the needs of our active ministry teams, as well as create a warm environment to gather and have fellowship,” said Father Musuubire. No doubt many are looking forward to the center’s completion. Sparks and fire: Metalworking school opens in Zion Crossroads BY CHRISTINA DIMEO GUSEMAN, CORRESOPONDENT every other weekend. Spending a day or two in class with Brownell is a fun experience. Gathering around coffee and doughnuts, students first share their goals for the course. After hearing thorough instructions on safety, they proceed to their booths and practice welding, some for the first time. The next day, students start crafting a project of their own choosing. “They have a ball,” declared Brownell, who already has students returning for additional classes. Brownell takes his school seriously, focusing on “doing it right” with clean, well-lit spaces and state-of-the-art equipment. Delilah’s Hair Designs opened his own business, Brownell Metal Studio, out of his garage. As his business grew larger, he settled into his current 4,000 square foot facility on Industrial Drive in Troy. Brownell Metal Studio works across the country on “high-end, high-quality architectural metalwork,” as well as more standard projects, utilizing a variety of metals including steel, stainless steel, bronze, brass, copper and aluminum. Brownell works with his customers through the estimation, budgeting, and manufacturing process to ensure that they end up completely satisfied. “We never do the same job twice,” he said, because “every job is custom and new.” While that makes it difficult, he said, it also “keeps it fun.” Such a passion for metalwork proved impossible to keep to himself. Two months ago, he opened Virginia School of Metal, operating out of Brownell Metal BAY “People have an inherent curiosity about sparks and fire,” asserted Steve Brownell, president of Virginia School of Metal. People also have a creative streak, he continued, so combining the two leaves them utterly fascinated. Sparking fascination is exactly what Brownell has done with the creation of Virginia School of Metal in Troy at Zion Crossroads. With students ranging from university presidents to construction workers to farm hands to dentists, Brownell thoroughly enjoys training people from all walks of life. The only requirement is a desire to create. “One student just wanted to make metal yard art,” he recalled. She took one of Brownell’s classes over the weekend and ended up producing her own ornamental guinea hens. Brownell should know how to teach metalwork; he’s been in the industry for almost 40 years. Photo by Lynn Stayton-Eurell The Rivanna River Basin Commission (RRBC) has announced that it is streamlining its infrastructure and staff to ensure that it will continue to be a positive and effective organization for protecting and restoring the Rivanna River and its watershed, according to a press release. “The Rivanna is a critical resource for the region,” Marvin Moss, chair of the RRBC, said in the press release. “The Commission plays an important role in our community because of its unique structure. We work directly with the local government boards and staff to ensure water and natural resources are always part of our watershed communities’ decision-making.” The Rivanna River Basin Commission (RRBC) is the public entity of local government that provides guidance for the stewardship and enhancement of the water and natural resources of the Rivanna River Basin – which includes Fluvanna County. The RRBC’s enabling legislation states that the RRBC will also provide a forum in which local governments and citizens can discuss issues affecting the Basin’s water quality and quantity and other natural resources. In order to best meet this mission, said Moss, RRBC will be focusing its resources on creating strategic partnerships and alliances that will help galvanize the communities that are in the Rivanna watershed to work together for the benefit of the river. Moss, who has served on the RRBC as an elected official from 2007 through 2009 and as Fluvanna County’s appointed citizen since mid-2010, says that the RRBC understands the critical importance of collaboration. “We know that it is only through our collective efforts that we can be effective in protecting the Rivanna.” Leslie Middleton, Executive Director of the RRBC since 2009, said, “Restructuring and working in a more focused and collective way with our important Rivanna partners is the best thing for us to do for the Rivanna in these challenging economic times.” “We have a river system that is ecologically ‘on the cusp,’” says Middleton. ”It will be all the harder later on if we do not seize this moment to work together in better and smarter ways on behalf of this river that this community really values.” Next to the Main Gate Fluvanna’s Only Certified Residential Brokerage OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK #1 in Fluvanna Sales Since 1984 MONTICELLO COUNTRY REALTORS 434-589-3539 • 800-825-LAKE ✔ THANKS FOR VOTING US #1 REAL ESTATE FIRM 4 YEARS IN A ROW NEW LISTINGS Under Contract in 4 days Under Contract in 3 days 4 Snead Court, Lake Monticello $159,900 26 Brougham Road, Lake Monticello $189,000 14 Sand Trap Terrace, Lake Monticello $269,000 10 Wedge Terrace, Lake Monticello $323,500 6 Meadow Ridge Road, Louisa $294,900 Charming ranch in golf course area. 3 bedrooms, 2 full baths, upgraded kitchen & 2 car garage. But walk inside its doors and the brightly colored walls, parquet floors and wicker furniture transport you to Gloria Bridges’ native hometown of Cartagena, Colombia. Bridges’ story is one told many times throughout the Untied States. American boy and Latin girl fall in love, get married and move back stateside for better opportunities for their children. Only Bridges never expected for so many opportunities to be afforded to her as well. On July 9, 2012 Gloria Bridges was sworn in as a U.S. citizen, and she credits Fluvanna’s adult education program, Families Learning Together, for her and her family’s success. Worrisome to the Bridges family, Families Learning Together is one of the many programs cut during the ongoing Fluvanna County budget crisis. The Bridges moved to Charlottesville when Gloria’s husband, Travis, got a job working in the bilingual auto claims department at State Farm Insurance. He had picked up Spanish during his time in the Army stationed in Panama, and after discharge met Gloria on a trip through Colombia. They were renting a home in Lake Monticello when their oldest daughter, Samantha, entered kindergarten in 2005. A flyer came home advertising the Families Learning Together program, which taught English as a Second Language (ESL). Although Gloria had taken university level English classes in Colombia, she still struggled. Now that her daughter was in school, she decided to go back too. Over 300 Fluvanna families have BY KRISTIN SANCKEN, CORRESPONDENT been served in the 11 years that Families Learning Together has been in existence. The program was designed to support and encourage parents in their educational goals while simultaneously enhancing their children’s school success. “The parents who come to us are interested in learning to speak English or wanting to improve basic skills or they want to pursue earning their GED credentials,” said Mary Ott, program coordinator. It was just what Gloria needed. “They provided transportation and childcare. They made it easy for me to enroll in the program,” said Gloria. “It was difficult to do anything else, because we only had one car.” In Colombia, Gloria was highly educated with a private university degree. She held respected jobs as a police inspector and then a supervisor of community services for her area. But in the United States she couldn’t get a job without speaking better English. “The problem in Cartagena is the accent. You can listen to English all you want in the classroom, but you don’t hear it outside of the classroom,” said Gloria. “I could read English, but my ears and my accent were still a problem.” Families Learning Together not only improved Gloria’s English, but they helped her navigate the American school system for her daughter, Samantha. Samantha, who is now 12 years old, remembers walking into her first day of kindergarten at Central Elementary only speaking Spanish. “At first is was very confusing because I had no idea what was going on. I followed what everyone else did,” said Samantha. “It helped me to be a momma and be in charge of the education of my children” – Gloria Bridges Travis, Gloria, Samantha, 12, Jay, 6, Juliette, 4, outside of their Scottsville area home. It’s more than we were expecting someone to help.” Families Learning Together taught Gloria and her children how to use the local library system and how to interpret and respond to report cards. Now, Samantha is a straight A student, as are her younger two siblings, Jay and Juliette. “It helped me to be a momma and be in charge of the education of my children,” said Gloria. “Sometimes you need someone to say, ‘you’re a momma. You have to pay attention to what is happening with your kids.’” Although Samantha had no idea how much effort her mom was making to help her be successful in school, Samantha remembers that the turning point for her was when her mom entered Families Learning Together. “It was life changing,” said Samantha of Families Learning Together. “It kind of stabilized our whole family.” After Gloria’s English improved, she 19 knew she had to apply for her citizenship so she could stay in the same country as her husband and three children. But she was terrified of the process, particularly of the final interview, which quizzes you on American history facts in English. Gayle von Keyserling, the Director of Adult Literacy, walked her through the entire process. “We did it like a family, together. She didn’t leave me alone. She practiced with me how to pronounce each word and answer each question in the civics book. I never expected a teacher to provide that much support,” said Gloria. “It was a big process. It took one year of preparation.” On the day of the interview in Fairfax, Gloria was prepared. She carried in a thick file of documentation, some of which were difficult to procure, like her Colombian birth certificate professionally translated into English and the last 12 years of tax returns. The two people ahead of her had been denied citizenship, one for not passing the civics test and the other for not having the proper documentation. Gloria’s stomach churned as she entered the room for her interview. She repeated some of the hardest answers to herself in her head – 425 congressmen in the U.S. House. C e l e b ra t i n g O u r 2 8 t h A n n i ve r s a r y Now Offering 1984 Rates! “It was not easy,” said Gloria. “Mostly because they don’t talk to you like it’s a test. It’s more like, you are my friend, let’s talk.” Gloria didn’t let her guard down. When the gentleman with the State Department casually asked her if she had ever voted, she quickly replied, “no sir, I cannot vote because I am not a citizen here.” Gloria passed the citizenship test with flying colors, and would cast her first ballot in the 2012 Presidential race. She has had other successes, to which she credits to Families Learning Together. A few weeks ago she accepted a job working for Region 10 as a bilingual probation officer, reentering her dream career in social services. “I was surprised when they said, ‘okay, you’re hired.’ I said, ‘Wow! Wow! I did it! People can understand me!” said Gloria. With Fluvanna County budget cuts, Bridges worries that other families won’t have the same level of opportunity she did. As of last year, Families Learning Together is no longer a part of the Fluvanna County Public Schools budget. They survive on grants from Dollar General, BAMA Works Fund and the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation. Their classrooms, in the basement of the Palmyra school building, are in kind donations from the Fluvanna school system. “We don’t really have a budget. We’re running on the grants we can get,” said Ott. “Because of what has happened, we are exploring becoming a non-profit. That will make us eligible to apply for a whole lot more grants.” Von Keyserling and Ott are only being paid for part-time work, but are volunteering full-time hours to serve the 30 families who come through their program each year. The money they used to use for transportation and childcare is also limited. “Now that the program is getting cut, our worry is that we don’t want to lose this program. We want to keep it in the community for other families to be able to do what we’re doing,” said Gloria. “I don’t think I would have gotten my citizenship if Ms. Gayle had not supported me. It’s something so important to us.” To advocate for funding dedicated to Families Learning Together, call your Board of Supervisors representative. Wheat! Everyone is talking about it. Some think it is the new diet rage. Others just think they feel better when they don’t eat it. But to those of us that have an allergy to wheat, barley, rye, and gluten it is devastating to even ingest a bite. The diagnosis of Celiac was discovered long ago. We know through research that 1 in 98 people probably have it. Studies show only 10% are officially diagnosed. Recent studies are showing that 1 in 40 people have a sensitivity to wheat. Why is it so hard to diagnose? The tests aren’t accurate, Physicians don’t know about it and are trying to treat the symptoms and lastly, some people just don’t get sick often so don’t even realize they should not be eating Gluten/Wheat. I would love to describe all the symptoms, but there are at least 250 0f them noted in studies. If two people with wheat allergies start comparing – you may find they both have very different issues. For example, if I have wheat – my asthma comes back, I ache all over like having the flu or Fibromyalgia, I have di- Featured Properties Immaculate property w/pool • Louisa County-Kents Store • $249,900 #508617 • Brick Home, 3 acres, 3Br,3B • Connie Fairchild, 434-466-8660 Better Than New, 1.5 acre • Mountain Brook, Louisa • $274,900 # 508680 • Hardwds,4br,Sunrm,Upgrades • Betsy Gunnels, 434-996-9797 Members of the Gluten Intolerance Group of Charlottesville. It will now take six months for our colon to heal – and in the meantime our immune system is so low that we catch any cold we are exposed to. The University of Virginia Medical Center had a Celiac support group for about 12 years. They met every other month. It was wonderful and a dietitian led the group. Unfortunately it wasn’t reaching all the folks that had a wheat allergy. They are closing this support system and their last meeting was in March. Five of us from the “old group” wanted more. So – welcome to the new Gluten Intolerance Group of Charlottesville. We are part of a national organization identified by GIG. Our first meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. It will be held at Hollymead Elementary School in Charlottesville. There will be tasty hors d’oeuvres, wonderful beverages, special music and tours of the community. The event is free, and the public is invited to learn more about this special community. However, reservations are requested. “We find The Independence offers our residents an active, stimulating environment in which they can explore their own interests while in the company of others – many with similar interests,” Ashley Lamm, community manager, said in the press release. “They are always on the go. The wide variety of social and cultural activities, plus the emphasis on wellness, offers them a very desirable lifestyle. And it’s all in a beautiful setting.” Recently, The Independence underwent a major expansion adding a 30-seat theater and a billiards and a storage room where residents can have access to various size units for storing extra clothes, small furnishings and holiday decorations. There is also a new, enlarged library and a community room. The library houses a computer center for on-line access, comfortable chairs for reading and relaxing, and rows of book shelves for the lending library. The 60-seat community room is for organized meetings and receptions. The community room, located in the rear of the main floor, is available to groups of residents and to outside civic organizations – both are welcome to hold lectures, programs or wine tastings, for example. Especially in the world of flowers. Heliotropic plants turn their faces during the day to follow the sun. Alfalfa, soy beans and cotton are heliotropic but they are not ornamenting our gardens. The backbone of the heliotropes is the sunflower. Planted at the back of a garden facing south, their huge heads turn from right to left as we look at them seeming to be reading the garden before them like a book. Okra also follows the sun and is so ornamental in the vegetable garden. Poppies and anemone turn with the sun as well as buttercups and lupine. The beautiful dark blue garden heliotrope in the borage family, an annual in zone 7, became so popular that the word is used to name the color rather than the diurnal movement. Winter heliotrope, an Irish wild flower which spreads in damp settings, doesn’t seem to flower well for me but occasionally sends up some stalks of pinkish purple clusters which dip and nod out of the shade towards the sun. The new science of biomimicry CONTRIBUTED BY THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY The sunflower is the backbone of the heliotropes. This season, if you have a sunny garden, look for the plants with ‘helio’ in the name; helianthemum or ‘sun rose’, the many perennial varieties of helianthus and heliopsis which are also deer and vole resistant. From the time you sit with coffee or tea in the morning until you sit with a glass of wine or a bit of chocolate in the evening, the flowers will turn their heads to watch over the garden while they entertain you. These cicadas have red eyes, black bodies and golden wings. Different from the “dog-day” cicadas we hear in July and August each year, these insects are coming out after 17 years in hiding. “Periodical cicadas are divided into two ‘races,’ based on their life cycle: a 17-year northern race, and a 13-year southern race,” explains Chris Asaro, forest health specialist for the Virginia Department of Forestry. “The majority of the cicada’s life cycle is spent in the nymphal stage underground, where it feeds on sap from tree roots. Adults live only for a few weeks. When the adults emerge, the males will ‘sing out’ to attract females.” This noisy courtship period typically lasts four-to-six weeks. To deposit her eggs, the female cicadas make punctures at the ends of twigs. The sudden appearance of many dead twigs, called “flagging,” may cause some concern. Most trees recover from this damage. The insects target newly planted fruit and ornamental trees, such as apple, dogwood, peach, hickory, cherry and pear. Hardwood trees, especially oaks, are also vulnerable, but pines and other conifers are usually left alone. Newly planted trees can be covered with fine netting to keep the cicadas from reaching the small tender twigs. Using sprays to control the cicadas is not recommended. Though they can be extremely noisy, cicadas are not poisonous and do not bite or sting. The insects are expected to stay with us until the end of May or early June. This is what you call an abundance of riches for someone like myself as I look for good places to eat lunch and write about in the Let’s Do Lunch column. So expect to see some reviews of new restaurants at Stonefield in 2013, starting with Burtons Grill. Recently, two people approached me about reviewing Burtons Grill and I am so glad they did. The original founder of Burtons Grill was an executive for Legal Seafood and it is evident by how well the fish was cooked (more about that later). With three other owners and investors who shared his vision for “contemporary American cuisine and ambience“, the first Burtons Grill opened in Boston and they currently have restaurants in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Virginia (Virginia Beach and Charlottesville), opening five of their ten locations in the last 18 months. Their attention has now turned from expanding to training their new staff and fine tuning the newer restaurants. Just a few comments before I start to describe what was a wonderful afternoon out with friends. Burtons Grill has a sophisticated and contemporary look while still feeling inviting and comfortable. There is seating for 200 people inside, including a separate room that seats 24 and an outside patio with a fire place that seats 34. Although the lunch prices are a little higher than some other places in the area, the quality and preparation of the food makes eating there a good value. The service is attentive and knowledgeable. We lunched on a Tuesday afternoon and were seated in an elevated booth. Large enough for eight people and close to the open kitchen where we could watch the colorful dishes as they were taken to other diners. The lunch menu offers soups and appetizers, salads, burgers and sandwiches and entrees as well as a large cocktail, beer and wine selection. Don and I ordered the soup of the day, She-crab soup which was $3.95 for a cup. I don’t know how the soup could be both so light and creamy. It was flavored with a hint of sherry, a good amount of crab and a little pepper that provided a tiny bite to each spoonful. Three friends ordered salmon for $13.95 from the entrée section of the menu. Bonnie and Art ordered the salmon bronzed, grilled with a light blend of cajun style seasonings and two sides. They found the salmon moist and tasty, not spicy. Linda ordered the salmon grilled with a light coating of lemon thyme butter and found the salmon fresh tasting and moist. Later we learned that the salmon is first grilled and then finished off in a pan of water in the oven - a technique that is used at Legal Seafood. All three chose broccoli that was cooked perfectly in a light seasoned sauce. Other sides chosen and enjoyed were rice with cilantro, a very different coleslaw with a mix of greens, carrots, and peppers in Move a sweet sauce and spinach sautéed in a touch of olive oil and bits of garlic. Don also chose seafood, ordering the haddock imperial which was light and flakey and covered with lump crabmeat, shrimp stuffing and panko breadcrumbs for $14.95. He also thought the onion rings were excellent. Dick ordered from the entrée part of the menu and he could not stop raving about the Mediterranean chicken for $11.95. Pan seared chicken, topped with sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese and provolone served over spinach risotto with a light lemon butter sauce was a success. He felt the chicken was prepared perfectly, nice and moist and the risotto was creamy and tasty. I ordered the harvest salad for $9.95 and added chicken for $5. The large bowl was filled with fresh greens, roasted butternut squash, sliced apples, pickled onions, almonds, goat cheese and a large piece of grilled chicken all tossed with maple vinaigrette. It was an unusual and delicious combination consisting of fresh ingredients, making it even better. It just so happened that I saw a group of friends at Burtons Grill who were celebrating a birthday in the private dining room. I asked them what they ordered and how did they like their choices? Here are a few of their comments: Kay and Sylvia enjoyed perfectly prepared fish tacos for $10.95. Small pieces of rockfish, tomato jalapeno relish, avocado, chipotle lime crema and shredded lettuce were served in two warm tortillas and accompanied by fiesta rice that they found flavorful. Sonja really liked the California chicken for $11.50 that combined bronzed chicken breast, ham, chipotle mayo, avocado crème and pepper jack cheese on grilled ciabatta bread and was served with hand cut french fries. The portion was large enough to take half home. Sandy thought her steak sandwich at $15.95 was delicious and also took half of her lunch home. She was impressed that the steak was thick pieces of grilled sirloin served on grilled ciabatta bread. Pesto cheese spread, roasted red peppers, arugula and cheese completed the sandwich which was then drizzled with balsamic reduction and served with french fries. in this Price Reduced! Marilyn thought the short rib shepherd’s pie for $13.95 was delicious and different. The ribs were lean and tasty, vegetables fresh and all were topped with mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese. Iscella was impressed by the presentation and taste of the chopped blue cheese salad for $8.95 which consisted of chopped (easy to eat) iceberg lettuce, grape tomatoes, red onion and “perfect” buttermilk blue cheese dressing, topped with bacon, smooth blue cheese crumbles and balsamic reduction. DESSERT! OMG - let me just say that my friends and I experienced some of the most amazing desserts which are $5.95 to $6.95. Key lime pie is on the regular dessert menu and is made with real key limes, cream cheese, graham cracker crust and is light and creamy (almost like a light cheese cake) but explodes with flavor. One of the chef choices that day was a blondie a la mode, a light brownie with heath bar crumbles in the brownie, vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and more crumbles around the plate - absolutely delicious. The other chef choice was a pecan praline tart with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce that was so good it is literally indescribable. All desserts are made on premises. Burtons Grill has a very different feel than most restaurants in the area. It is clear that the owners and manager understand how important it is to serve high quality food, prepared and presented beautifully. This is a great place to meet friends for lunch, celebrate a special occasion, or stop by for an appetizer and dessert after catching a movie or a day of shopping. Separate vegetarian, gluten free and children’s menus are available and all dishes are made to order, so you can ask to have it made to your liking. Reservations are accepted by phone and online. I returned to Burtons Grill with family visiting who often eat in upscale restaurants in New York City. They were impressed. I think you will be too. Outstanding performances across the board launched the Flucos into a third place finish in one of Virginia’s biggest invitationals, which featured 18 teams from all over the state. The Flucos were led by the throwing trio of seniors Nate Szarmach and Devin Goode and junior Deiondre Key. Together, the trio scored 20 of Fluvanna’s 45 points, all three threw statequalifying marks in discus. Senior Chance Parmly tied his personal best in the pole vault with a clear of 15’, taking first place. Fluvanna, which finished 19 out of 24 teams last year, was the top Jefferson District team at the meet. “We have had an amazing season so far,” said senior Michael Mattson.” We have a really good chance of winning the district this season.” On the girl’s side, defending AA Outdoor State Champion Hannah 20 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | April 18, 2013 Meador cleared a season best 12’ in the pole vault to take first place. Seniors Courtney Searcy and La’Dietra Jackson took fourth and fifth in shot put respectively. Senior distance runner Stephanie Bossong broke the school record in the 3200m run with a time of 12:24. The girls’ team scored a total of 18 points to place 11 overall. Boys’ soccer No win comes easy, and that motto proved true for the Flucos April 11 in their match against the Louisa Lions. In a game in which the Flucos outshot the Lions 27-2, Fluvanna was only able to put two of those shots in the back of the net. Luckily for the Flucos, the second of the two goals put them on top just at the right time. The late-game heroics of senior Cristian Franco came in the 77th minute when he chipped the ball perfectly over the Lions’ goalie to put FCHS up 2-1 in the waning minutes of the game. “It was good to get back on track, but we still have a lot of work to do before we get to where we want to be,” said senior Michael Pieno. The two teams were tied at one goal apiece at halftime after senior Brad Bullock and L i o n member Juan Gutierrew-Reyes exchanged goals in the first half. The Flucos continued to dominate possession of the ball in the second half but struggled to find the back of the net. It wasn’t until Bullock connected with Franco ahead of the defense to force the goalie out of the box and Franco took advantage that the Flucos were able to secure the win, which improved Fluvanna’s record to 3-2-1. Their next game will be an in-district matchup against the Powhatan Indians. Girls’ soccer New coach, new players, new game plan, and not to mention a new stadium – much has changed since the start of last season for the Fluvanna girls’ soccer team, but that hasn’t stopped them from producing impressive wins. The Flucos, now coached by Christine Davis, tamed the Lions last week. However, they did it in a much more dominating fashion than their male counterparts, shutting out Louisa 5-0. “They left us with a lot of bruises, but we were excited to come home with the win,” said junior Heather Hicks. Fluvanna was led by sophomore forward Kiana Childress who netted a hat trick. Also getting into the scoring mix was freshman Maddie Messier and junior midfielder Julia Albright. Sophomore goalie and co-captain Morgan Symmers continued her strong season by not allowing any goals in the victory. “Kiana’s hat trick was really awesome because that’s the first time anyone’s done that for us this season,” said Albright. The win improves Fluvanna’s record to 2-3-1 and back into the race for the Jefferson District crown. Tennis The Fluco tennis teams have been serving up their competition thus far in the season. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have put on strong performances throughout the season and look to continue that into the thick of district play. On the boys’ side, the team currently sports a record of 4-2. Leading the way for the boys is senior Kyle Wicks and junior Michael Tamony. As a doubles team, the two are 4-2 on the year. The most recent of the team’s wins is a 9-0 thrashing of Louisa last week. “Most teams have a steep drop off after their top three players, but we’re actually pretty deep this year,” said Wicks. That depth has Fluvanna in position to make it one step further into the post season, a feat not accom- See Fluco, page 22 Fluco boys’ soccer team falls to Waynesboro Little Giants 4-1 BY DUNCAN NIXON, CORRESPONDENT The Fluco boys’ soccer team won its first two games by scores of 5-1 and 7-0, but Coach Earl Gibson commented that his team “wasn’t quite ready for the speed of Waynesboro.” During the evening (April 2), the Flucos actually dominated play and had a wealth of scoring opportunities. However, as Coach Gibson noted after the game “you have to score.” The Little Giants took advantage of their limited opportunities and scored on breakaways and deflections. The first score of the game came in the seventh minute. Waynesboro had a breakaway down the right side and the shot from the top of the penalty area caromed of the left goal post. Waynesboro’s left forward was there to slam the rebound into an open net, and the Little Giants were up 1-0. In the next few minutes, the Flucos had several chances to even the score. A Fluco two on one just missed, then a cross from senior forward Dale Ludwig was just too high to be headed in. With 25:05 left in the half junior Nick Yellets had a good chance to score, but the Waynesboro goalie was there just in time to make the stop. Three minutes later, a nice pass from sophomore Hunter DeForge to Ludwig looked like it would result in a tying goal, but the Waynesboro goalie again got there just in time to break up the play. Two minutes later, one of Waynesboro’s speedy forwards made a clever dribbling move in front of the Fluco net and fired a shot past the Fluco goalie for a 2-0 lead with 18:37 left in the half. With 15:40 left in the half, Waynesboro had another good scoring chance, but Fluco goalie, senior Jake Bachman went high to punch away a free kick that could easily have been headed into the net. The Flucos immediately came back to threaten to score. Ludwig dribbled around several defenders and fired a shot that was deflected high in the air in front of the goal. DeForge got a foot on the rebound, but his hard shot was just too high. Unfortunately, in the 34th minute of play, the Little Giants achieved another breakaway. Their first shot was stopped, but a failure to clear the rebound gave the Little Giants another good chance, and they connected for a 3-0 lead with 6:42 left in the half. In the waning seconds of the first half, the Flucos were again applying heavy pressure, but again they were unable to score as a shot at an empty net went wide right with only seconds left in the half. Accordingly, the score was 3-0 in favor of Waynesboro at the half. The second half started with the Flucos dominating play, but neither side was able to generate as many scoring opportunities as occurred in the first half. Dale Ludwig was the dominant offensive force for the Flucos, but Waynesboro was marking him closely, often with two defenders. Unfortunately for the Flucos, in the 36th minute of play, the Little Giants put the game away. An excellent cross was skillfully settled and a shot was fired into the net to make the score 4-0, with 14:16 remaining. As the clock ran down, the Flucos finally got on the board in the final minute of play. DeForge took a free kick from inside mid-field and Ludwig headed the ball Senior Fluco Brad Bullock during pregame warm-up Photo by Duncan Nixon up and over the Waynesboro goalie for a score to break the shutout. After the game Coach Gibson noted that Waynesboro was a sound team with good speed. He lauded the play of seniors Dale Ludwig, Christian Franco and Jordan Thacker. He was also pleased with the play of freshman Carter Allbaugh and sophomore Hunter DeForge. Coach Gibson has veteran, senior laden, team this year, so despite this loss, the prospects are good for a successful season. The Flucos were scheduled to play the Little Giants again on Wednesday, April 17. April 18, 2013 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | 21 Fluco from page 20 plished in recent years. On the same day that the boys took on Louisa, the girls’ squad took on the Lions at home at the Flucos’ state-ofthe-art tennis courts and rode that home-court advantage to a narrow 5-4 victory. Senior Sabrina Gomez has consistently been the Flucos’ top performer this season, and she looks to finish off her senior campaign strong. Baseball Fluco baseball, traditionally a Jefferson District powerhouse, has lived up to its potential thus far in the spring. Currently holding onto a 5-1 record, Fluvanna took care of business April 11 against Louisa to take hold of first place in the District. The Flucos beat the Lions 8-5 on the road securing their second district win. Although the season is young, the Flucos continue to exceed expectations and play at a high level. “We know that we are capable of competing for a championship, we just have to continue to play good ball down the stretch,” said team member Mason Barringer. Fluvanna (2-0 Jefferson District) suffered their lone loss to Spotswood March 19 and with the wacky weather early in the season the Flucos have yet to find their best form. But the impressive wins against Charlottesville and Spotsylvania suggest the Flucos can be one of the most lethal teams in Central Virginia. The young JV Fluco baseball team has had its own impressive run of play as they continue to prove that Fluco baseball has a bright future. In an important district game against Charlottesville, the Flucos were able to slaughter-rule the Black Knights. “We have a long season in front of us, but it’s good to be playing this well early on,” said team member Brett Haislip. Softball From the outside, there is something about the green grass and freshlypainted lines that makes softball so inviting. But on the field there is nothing about the sport that suggests a friendly atmosphere; on the field it’s all business. The Lady Fluco softball team has battled hard in every game this season, but perhaps no game can match the intensity displayed in their meeting with Goochland High School on April 11. The Flucos’ and the Bulldogs’ defensive skills were on display as both teams kept their opponent from scoring more than one run in a closely-contested game. “We battled in every inning of that game,” said senior Ashleigh Harris, “we wanted to win so badly.” In a game where runs were hard to come by, every at-bat situation was magnified as both teams looked to get on the scoreboard and ultimately win the game. Unfortunately for the Flucos, it was the Bulldogs that were able grab the only run of the game. “It was disappointing. We put in so much effort but couldn’t finish the game on a strong note,” said Harris. The Flucos also lost their third game of the week 22 | FLUVANNA REVIEW | April 18, 2013 against Louisa, but were able to defeat Charlottesville by the slaughter rule to improve to an overall record of 6-4. On the junior varsity side, the young Flucos continue to make big strides toward being a successful program. The Flucos are now 3-2 and hope to finish the year on a positive note. “We have started off strong and we look to improve now that the district play has started,” said Head Coach Corey Banton. Boys’ lacrosse While it’s hard to be proud of a loss, the Fluvanna lacrosse team has done just that as they continue to improve tremendously from the previous year. The Flucos were able to hold their heads up high after a loss to Jefferson District powerhouse Charlottesville High School. “Like always there is a little disappointment after a loss, but we did a great job of staying together as a team and playing until the end,” said senior goalie John Marshall. Meanwhile, the junior varsity team fought in a battle that came down in the end to a 7-6 loss to the Black Knights. “We really meshed well as a team, and if we continue to improve and play like we did then we should definitely pick up some more wins by the end of the season,” said freshman Joel Kesterson. The great thing about being a new program is that every game lends an opportunity to improve. The Fluco lacrosse program continues to show flashes of brilliance as they compete in one of the toughest lacrosse areas in Virginia. Although the team only has three wins on the season, much can be said about the major improvement from a year ago where the Flucos didn’t grab a single win. With a lengthy schedule and an unmatched desire to win, the Flucos are sure to be the next up-and-coming program in Central Virginia. Girls’ lacrosse After winning their first game of the season, the Lady Fluco lacrosse team has struggled to fill out the win column as of late. Still, the Lady Flucos continue to show improvement on the offensive side, as seen in their recent game against the Black Knights where they netted nine goals. With strong leadership provided by senior Megan Graham and junior Clay Conner, the Flucos battled hard to hang with Charlottesville. Ultimately, however, the Black Knights came away with the critical district win with a final score of 20-9. “The Jefferson District is full of good teams and playing them is definitely going to help us build a stronger program,” said sophomore Kylee Dixon. With a tough schedule ahead of them the Flucos are looking to bounce back and make a run in District play “We’re young and learning,” said freshman junior varsity player Courtney Ott, “but we’re confident that we can turn it around.” Fluvanna’s next game will be a Jefferson District matchup against Monticello on April 19. GIFFORD, CORRESPONDENT Margie Smith, a former nursing assistant, decided it was time to start her own business. She is the owner, operator and licensed nail technician of HandsNFeet2U, a mobile natural spa and nail service. When did you start up the business? Smith: I started the business in 2005. Before graduating from Black Thorn Academy, in Fishersville, I spent 20 years working in the healthcare field as a nursing assistant with an AAS degree. Since graduating from Black Thorn, I have relied on my customer’s word of mouth for new business. I am a licensed nail technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia through the Board for Barbers and Cosmetology and I am insured. This nail/spa business and website was conceived in 2012. What types of services do you perform? Smith: We are a mobile nail spa, primarily performing manicures and pedicures. Where do you travel to? Smith: My services are available in Fluvanna County, Charlottesville, and surrounding areas. Margie Smith is the owner, operator and licensed nail technician of HandsNFeet2U. Photo courtesy of Margie Smith Who are your customers? Smith: Services are offered to men and women of all ages and children age five and up. 90 Day Special! Smith: Our mobile services will save our customers money on gas and childcare and save them time since they don’t have to wait in line at a salon. We can bring our services and atmosphere to the location of your choice. We perform these services at your home, hotel suite, office, hospital, assisted living or adult home. We come to you and work around whatever challenge you may have, whether it is bed rest, nursing a baby, broken limbs or wheel-chair bound. You get individualized attention. What is your philosophy? Smith: We believe that our customers’ needs are of the utmost importance. Our entire team is committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from repeat customers and referrals. An added feature of your business is the Spa Party. Who uses this service? Smith: Anyone planning a wedding or baby shower, birthdays, retirements, anniversaries, graduations or girls’ night out as well as corporate spa days or any other occasion. Spa parties are available for groups of four to ten. We also cater to girls five and up. We have extended hours available seven days a week for special parties. In addition, we offer theme parties for little girls, including Princess & The Frog, Hello Kitty, Tinker Bell and Barbie. We will decorate for the party and have games and crafts for kids. We also have spa baskets at the parties as well and homemade cupcakes are optional. You also add that you make your own Homemade Organic Scrubs? Smith: I personally make my own organic scrubs; they’re made fresh daily and never store bought. I use simple ingredients. For example, one of my scrubs contains oatmeal, brown sugar, honey, olive oil, Epsom salts and other natural ingredients while I use oatmeal, sea salt and aloe vera for sensitive skin. Everything is hospital grade and sterile. I also use essential oils in my scrubs and lotions for aromatherapy. Other than the natural nail soaks and foot scrubs, I make homemade diabetic lotions, detoxifying footbaths and anti-aging hand treatments. Smith adds that she is planning to donate part of her proceeds to a couple of her favorite charities, including Camp Holiday and breast cancer research. She believes in giving back to her community. Her prices are competitive but for more information and the cost of a manicure or pedicure, visit her website http://www.handsandfeet2u.com/ default.html or contact Margie Smith at 434-981-3733. Fork Union Military Academy’s Boy Scout Troop 125 constructed a Flag Retirement Box for Jasher Grunau’s Eagle Scout project. There was an installment ceremony held last week, at the Fork Union Pharmacy in Fork Union. Dane Yonce, owner of Fork Union Pharmacy was the beneficiary of the box. The box was built so people will have a place to donate their old flags in order for them to be retired in the manner they deserve, in accordance with federal law. They are treated respectfully at all times and burned in a Boy Scout ceremony. Troop 125 will conduct the flag retirement ceremonies, and will monitor the box on a weekly basis. She is shy of people as a result, but is eager to please and a very willing girl. Despite being very scared, she tolerated her bath with good grace and even ended it with a slow tail wag. She is beginning to understand that people are good, and that somewhere out there is a family that will teach her what it means to be a beloved family member. If you have it in your heart to make a difference for this darling girl, you will be rewarded more than you know - with the deep and lasting affection of a dog who appreciates a person who will love them forever.
