The term carat (ct) refers to the weight
of the diamond and is often confused
with size.
Diamonds can come in an array of
beautiful fancy colours, such as pink,
blue, red and yellow. diamonds however
are only ever cut from the finest selection
of pure white diamonds.
Clarity describes the purity of the
diamond.
The cut of a diamond refers to its
proportions, yet often cut is misunderstood
as its shape. Of the 4C’s, the cut is the
aspect directly influenced by man.
Diamonds are cut into various shapes
D–F

upon the original form of the

diamond, which is called “rough”,

the shape, a well-cut

diamond is better able to reflect light.
A carat equals 200 milligrams and is
divided into 100 points. Therefore 1⁄2ct
equates to 50 points Phoenix Cut™ and
is generally written as 0.50ct. diamonds
are available in a variety of carat
weights ranging from 0.20pts to 3ct+.
These white diamonds are graded on
a scale starting from D through to Z,
with D being colourless and Z being
light yellow or brown. Phoenix Cut™
diamonds comfortably sit at the top of
this scale.
Colour or the lack of it allows more light
to pass through the diamond, therefore
the less colour the diamond has the more
it will sparkle.
To determine a diamonds clarity
an expert views it under 10 times
magnification to find any inclusions or
blemishes that may exist inside or on
the surface of the diamond. The fewer

This reflection is achieved by the use of
facets, adjacent flat surfaces, of which a
Phoenix Cut™ has 89. When the facets
are polished correctly, symmetrically
and to proper proportions, light is
reflected from one to another and then
dispersed through the top of the stone.
This relationship is designed to maximise
the amount of light reflected out of a
diamond and amplify its beauty.
The proportions, symmetry and polish
are graded as Excellent, Very Good, Good
and Fair.
