Dear People of St. Catherine,
Giving Back To Veterans
I appreciate all the birthday greetings and cards which I have
received during the past week. My birthday was September 2.
The Pre4 children in our school presented to me their hand
drawn and colored birthday cards and sang Happy Birthday to
me, which was so special.
Congratulations to the Jackie Robinson West Little League
Champions of the United States. The Sun-Times had a
headline which read: Our Champions. Everyone in Chicago
can take pride in their accomplishments.
Does anyone have a not too large Chicago Bear’s banner which
I could display from my second floor west window? The
Green Bay banner which is displayed on the other end needs
some competition.
One year ago this weekend I first arrived for Sunday Mass at
St. Catherine. While there are a number of things which I
would like to share with you, I first would like to thank
everyone who has helped to make St. Catherine my home. You
have been very welcoming and supportive, and so many of you
have been willing to pick up and help St. Catherine with your
time, talent, and treasure. During this past year, much has
happened here at St. Catherine because of you.
I remember when I paid my first visit to the rectory. I noticed
that part of the outside of the rectory was partially repainted.
Then I walked in to see carpet held together by duct tape, and
wallpaper peeling off the wall. I went upstairs to what would
be my rooms and saw a buckled ceiling in my bedroom from
the leaking roof, and as I looked outside on the garage roof, a
greenhouse of vegetation was growing between the slats of the
wood deck.
But all that began to change very quickly because of the help of
so many. In August, before I arrived, the wallpaper in my two
room suite was removed, walls painted, and rooms decorated.
The upstairs rooms were then carpeted. The wood deck on the
garage roof was removed, along with the botanic garden. The
facilities committee then went to work on getting bids for the
roofing of the rectory, which was just completed before the
snows of winter came. Then the water damaged ceiling dry
wall in my bedroom was replaced. Also, during the fall, the
dead trees and bushes on the west side of the rectory were cut
down. During the winter, the first floor wallpaper was
removed, and all the dining room, meeting room, hallway, and
offices were painted. Two new patio windows replaced the
rotted old patio windows. Finally, the first floor was ready for
new carpeting, which some parishioners had generously
donated money for. This summer, the outside of the rectory
was painted. The cracked, sunken concrete patio was replaced.
The west side of the rectory was recently landscaped,
complementing the front of the rectory.
During the summer, the first floor air conditioning unit went
out and also had to be replaced. And Fr. Stan helped with the
beautifying of the rectory grounds, planting his vegetable
garden. So many of you helped to make the rectory a place
which we can feel good about, welcoming visitors and guests.
And I now declare the rectory a duct tape free zone.

During the first few months of marriage, the
honeymoon period, the one we love may seem
perfect to us. He or she can do nothing wrong.
Soon, though, reality sets in and we start
accumulating hurts. We may hurt one another
knowingly or unknowingly. It’s much the same in a
family or a community. Sooner or later our love for
one another is tested by sin and human weakness.
Will we put up with the other’s behavior or confront
it? Which choice reflects true love?
Today Paul recalls some signs of true love; he
reminds us what those who love will not do. The
other Scriptures bring out some of the surprising
signs of true love. Loving one another just might
involve nagging, confronting, fighting, or telling
family secrets. It will certainly involve mutual
respect and acceptance, along with a healthy dose
of prayer for each other. And true love will seek
constantly to call forth the best in the ones we love.

available) when an adorer is unable to attend his/
her hour.
Even if you are unable to commit to a certain hour
each week, please stop by and BE WITH JESUS
for a few minutes, whenever you are passing by.

Friday from 3pm to 6pm. More hours may be

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR ABORTED CHILDREN
AT ST. MARY CEMETERY
On Saturday, September 13, Pro-Life Americans
throughout the country will gather at the gravesites of
aborted babies and other memorial sites dedicated in their
honor for the Second Annual National Day of
Remembrance for Aborted Children, a joint project of the
Pro-Life Action League, Priests for Life and Citizens for
a Pro-Life Society.
Solemn vigils will be held at these sites to commemorate
the more than 50 million children who have lost their
lives to legal abortion since 1973, and to remind our
society of the humanity of the unborn child. Please join
us for the memorial service in our community.

Evergreen Park, IL at the gravesite of 500
aborted babies.
