Vacon AC drives control air handling units
at Inox multiplex cinema in Pune, India
Bollywood, the Mumbai-based Hindi-language film industry
in India, is one of the largest film producers in the world.
However, a good film alone is not enough to make going to
the cinema an enjoyable experience. A lot depends on the
ambient conditions in the auditorium. Using a Vacon AC drive
to control the air handling unit improves energy-efficiency,
without disturbing the sensitive audio-visual systems or the
audience. Vacon AC drives comply with the requirements of
EMC level C1.
In India, single-screen theatres are being rapidly replaced
by multiplex cinemas. One of the fastest growing multiplex
chains is Inox Leisure Ltd*. In Pune − a city of 5 million people
located in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, roughly
150 kilometres east of Mumbai − the company occupies a
complex with four state-of-the-art auditoriums as well as
shops and restaurants. Operational since May 2002, Inox
Pune is more than a cinema, it is a popular place to chill out.
Wise investments are a key element in Inox’s success.
Signals from existing BMS to Vacon AC drive
At Inox Pune auditorium 2, until recently no AC drives were
used in the air conditioning system, so the motors of the air
handling unit (AHU) were always running at full speed and thus
consuming a lot of energy. The temperature in the auditorium
was maintained at a set level by damping the airflow with a
motorized control valve. Retrofitting was needed. Inox Pune
turned to Vacon India, Vacon’s subsidiary headquartered in
Chennai since January 2007.
Vacon recommended the Vacon NXL range of AC drives for
running the motors of the AHU unit connected to the building
management system (BMS). The AHU motor now runs between
minimum and maximum speeds depending on the feedback (0
– 10 V) from the BMS. The valve is kept fully open.
Clear energy savings and short payback time
Controlling an air conditioning system that has a variable air
volume with a variable speed AC drive instead of damping
gives typical savings in electricity costs of 20 – 40%.
It is estimated that this installation will pay back the
investment in less than 11 months. After that, the reductions
in electricity costs are pure savings.
No disturbance for sensitive audio-visual systems &
audience
For Inox it is extremely important that the movie is seen and
heard at optimum quality, just as the filmmaker intended.
For this reason auditorium 2 at Inox Pune is equipped with
Christie projectors, the best in projection quality, and the
Dolby Digital EX Surround System, the best in sound quality.
These systems must not be disturbed by any other electrical
equipment.
The Vacon NX drives comply with the latest electromagnetic
compatibility (EMC) requirements. Thanks to the integrated
EMC/RFI filters and AC chokes, the Vacon NXL drives can be
installed in the vicinity of sensitive audio-visual equipment −
even without an extra enclosure.
The default switching frequency of the Vacon NXL is 6 kHz,
which makes the motor run more silently. The motor noise
is also reduced because the output waveform of the motor
is close to pure sinusoidal. No motor noise disturbs the
audience.
Small & reliable − ideal for retrofitting
The mechanical design of the Vacon NXL, in particular the
IP54 units, is extremely compact, which makes them an ideal
choice for retrofitting.
All units are suitable for both wall and enclosure mounting
with all necessary components integrated.
In environments with sensitive audio-visual systems,
emissions and immunity to radio frequency disturbances
are matters of primary importance. Vacon AC drives
comply with the requirements of the EMC level C1 for
conducted and radiated emissions without an extra
enclosure. This allows installation close to an audio-video
system. Vacon AC drives can withstand temperatures up
to + 50 ˚C.

Inox very pleased with the retrofit
After completing the commissioning of the Vacon AC drives at
the Inox Pune multiplex, Vacon India personnel monitored the
system for a week. Inox is very pleased with the performance
of the retrofit and the support given by Vacon India, and they
soon decided to order three further Vacon AC drives to control
other air handling units at the Inox Pune multiplex.
