HOUSING DATA
The Housing Data is compiled using Zillow.com Single Family Median Sales
Price (Nov. 2011 – year-to-year). To arrive at a monthly mortgage we used
BankRate.com mortgage calculator for a 30-year mortgage at 5% interest.
We did not include a down payment or property taxes since these tend to negate
each other. The down payment will bring the monthly housing payment down, but
property taxes will increase it roughly the same amount.

UTILITIES
For utilities we used a variety of sources. For electricity and phone data we used
2011 2nd Quarter ACCRA Data for the cities listed and used a statewide average
for those not listed.
For the rest of the utilities the data will be the same for all cities. The data is from
associations or foundations that conduct national surveys. There is no individual
city data.
The mobile phone data comes from CTIA, The International Association for the
Wireless Telecommunications. They conduct a semi annual survey. The cable
TV data is from the FCC and their annual survey. Internet data is from the Pew
Internet & American Life Project.

TRANSPORTATION
The transportation data was accumulated from individual city sites and from
Edmunds.com
There are 6 options in transportation:
1. Human Power
2. Bus
3. Used Auto – 2009 Scion tc
4. Basic Auto – 2011 Chevrolet Camaro
5. Average Auto – 2011 Ford F-150
6. Luxury Auto – 2011 Cadillac Escalade
1. Human Power data shows up as $0 cost.
2. The Bus data consists of the cost of a monthly pass for each city’s major
public transportation. For those cities without a monthly pass, we
multiplied daily adult fare by 40 (2 fares per day for 20 days). The data
was collected from each city’s transit. A zero amount appears for those
cities without pubic transit.

3. – 6. The data for each auto type is from Edmunds.com 'True Cost To
Own". This data is the same for all cities in Texas. The autos selected
have high teen appeal.
Edmunds.com True Cost To Own addresses the total cost to own a
vehicle. It includes financing, taxes & fees, insurance, fuel, maintenance,
repair & depreciation and does not just include the purchase price. This
information is free of charge on any vehicle:

STUDENT LOAN DEBT
There are numerous sources for Student Loan Debt data. These range from
foundations dedicated to student debt to government agencies, which provide
data on higher education expenses. The sources differentiate student debt by
type of degree and institution type (public vs. private). There is no individual city
data.
The most comprehensive data comes from www.FinAid.org. They analyze
source data from the National Center for Education Statistics (http://nces.ed.gov)
to arrive at the following:
On the following page you will find the median student loan amounts by degree
type and the maximum repayment period for each.
The amount listed in the Student Loan Debt Expense reflect the amount listed for
the degree type divided by the maximum number of years listed in the repayment
period table along with a 5% interest rate.
