We are all Partners in Caring A N D CO M M U N I T Y H E A LT H 2007/08 Annual Report One of the most sublime experiences we can ever have is to wake up feeling healthy after we have been sick. — Rabbi Harold Kushner, Best Selling author 1 We are all partners in caring annual report 07/08 Partners in Progress The past year has been nothing short of transformational! Launching the $32 million Partners in Caring Campaign in May ’07 inspired many great things, most of all the incredible community spirit that enabled the successful and muchanticipated conclusion of the first phase of the Campaign – finishing the fifth and sixth floors of the hospital. 2007/08 also saw the strengthening of relationships with our fundraising partners, for whose support we are endlessly grateful. The hospital’s medical staff, Peace Arch Hospital Auxiliary Society, White Rock / South Surrey Community Foundation, and numerous community groups and other organizations rallied to support the vision of our hospital housing state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and health care services. They, along with many individuals who volunteer tirelessly in the name of enhancing health care for our community, help make it possible to move forward with fundraising for the remaining four projects included in our Partners in Caring Campaign. It is with this incredible backing that we are also able to continue fulfilling our annual commitment to purchase essential medical equipment for departments across the hospital campus, which totalled $1.4 million last year. In all, more than 3,300 donors gave nearly 5,300 gifts to our Foundation last year; each with their own reason for doing so. However, the spirit in which those gifts were given is always the same and for that we are thankful. The Foundation Board and staff continue to be inspired by the enthusiasm of our community for the Campaign and by the progress that has been made with it over the last year. With the ongoing support of our donors, we will continue to strive toward our fundraising goals for each Campaign project and help our hospital provide the best health care possible close to home. Sandy Wightman Jackie Smith Chair, 2006-2008 Executive Director Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation Our Volunteer Leaders The Foundation is very proud of our dedicated Board of Directors and members of the Partners in Caring Campaign Cabinet. We are grateful for their enormous efforts on behalf of the Foundation and Hospital, and are also very appreciative of the contributions made by hundreds of other volunteers who support our work through various committees, at events and in the Foundation office. Every single member of the Foundation’s volunteer Board of Directors and Campaign Cabinet have personally made a gift to the Partners in Caring Campaign. 3 We are all partners in caring annual report 07/08 Partners in Caring On May 7, 2007 the launch of our ambitious $32 million Partners in Caring Campaign, the largest fundraising initiative in our community’s history, was announced by Campaign Chair Tom Kirstein. The landmark Campaign will raise funds to support five projects which are to be completed in phases: • Completion of the 5th and 6th floors of the hospital • Purchase of a MRI • Modernization of the Maternity Unit • Construction of an Integrated Centre for Health Improvement • Planning for expansion of the Emergency Department. At the time of the announcement, $11.3 million had been raised toward the Campaign goal, and an unprecedented $3 million in support from Robert and Florence Hassell helped set the Campaign in motion. By the end of the fiscal year, the 5th and 6th floors of the hospital were complete and a total of $17 million had been raised in gifts and pledges for the Campaign. We now look ahead with anticipation as momentum builds toward the purchase of a new MRI by Spring 2009 followed by the Maternity Unit renovations which will provide enhanced and modernized facilities for infants and their mothers. Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation We are all partners in caring annual report 07/08 5 There’s No Place Like Home When Robert Hassell describes the development of Peace Arch Hospital under his leadership as Chair of the Hospital Society Board in the mid-1960s, it’s easy to understand the progress the hospital has made since then. The passion, vision and drive that he exemplifies is what helped launch the hospital as we know it and pave the way for future expansion which is being leveraged today; it is also what helped him achieve success in his businesses, something he continues to work at well into his eighties. Mr. Hassell and his brothers owned Hassell Brothers Bulldozing until 1957 and actually cleared the property that the hospital sits on. Later, in the 1960s, Mr. Hassell worked hard to negotiate with the provincial government for further development of Peace Arch Hospital, and spent endless hours working with the medical staff and others to see the hospital evolve from a 40-bed health care centre to a fullservice community hospital. During this time, Mrs. Hassell also supported the hospital as an active member of the Auxiliary, something she enjoyed being a part of very much. The roots in our community run deep for the Hassells who both grew up in the area. They also raised their three daughters in White Rock and today most of their family still calls the area home. Despite traveling throughout North America and spending much time away over the past forty years, Mr. and Mrs. Hassell continue to call our community home. “It doesn’t matter where we go, or how long we stay there, it just isn’t home. This community is our home and we will always consider it to be that way,” said Mr. Hassell emphatically. That sentiment is at the heart of the couple’s decision to bestow the Foundation with $3 million in support of the Partners in Caring Campaign. “We made our first dollar here in White Rock,” explained Mr. Hassell. “Since then we have been fortunate and we are happy to share some of what we have with the community where it all began for us. The hospital is one of the best places for us to do that. I think that if you have done well for yourself and you have the means, then there isn’t a much better place to give than the hospital.” Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation Your Gifts Go Far In addition to raising funds for the Partners in Caring Campaign this year, the Foundation continued the support it provides annually for the purchase of essential capital medical equipment throughout the hospital. In all, $1.4 million of new and replacement equipment was purchased to enable hospital staff to provide the best standards of care to patients. The following examples outline just a few of the important pieces of equipment that your gifts helped fund for the hospital. Broselow Cart $5,800 Emergency Department Children’s smaller bodies require smaller medical equipment, and the Broselow Cart provides an easy way for staff to organize and find each piece when seconds can make all the difference in the health outcome for a child. Hyper/Hypothermia Unit $16,500 Emergency Department This simple but incredibly important piece of equipment (shown to the right) is invaluable for meeting best practices in health care to cool the body temperature of patients in cardiac arrest and to warm patients with hypothermia. 7 We are all partners in caring annual report 07/08 “Our ability to diagnose and treat patients is not only restricted to medical knowledge but more and more is reliant on new technologies and devices. The members of our community deserve the best care possible and the Foundation with it’s financial support makes this a reality. Our goal should be to have the most up to date and sophisticated equipment that would rival any hospital in the province.” — Dr. Herman Kwan, Urologist, Peace Arch Hospital (photographed below with Ligasure Console Force Triad). Ligasure Console Force Triad $33,500 Surgical Unit Laparoscopic surgery enables a surgeon to perform an operation through small incisions in a patient’s body using specialized equipment which often allows for quicker recovery, less pain and shorter hospital stays for patients. The Ligasure is used for high-risk and complex laparoscopic surgeries (such as nephrectomies and prostatectomies) to help reduce blood loss by sealing blood vessels. Intubating Glidescope $10,000 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Intubation is essential for many patients in ICU who need assistance breathing. The new Glidescope is equipped with a high-resolution camera that allows physicians to see the upper airway and insert a breathing tube with greater precision, minimizing discomfort for patients. Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation Financials 2007/08 was a year like no other for the Foundation. With the steadfast support of our Board, Campaign Cabinet and many committee and event volunteers, our dedicated staff were well supported as our Partners in Caring Campaign got off the ground. The ongoing commitment to our hospital from the community, who clearly value the access they have to Uses of Funds: quality health care close to home, was evident from the $5.6 million raised this year. In addition, we received pledges in support of the Campaign totalling $8.5 million. This generosity demonstrates that continued progress is being made towards meeting our ambitious $32 million Campaign goal along with continued support for the hospital’s annual capital equipment needs. We are also proud to note that 100% of every donation goes towards its dedicated purpose in supporting the health care initiatives for which it is intended; operating expenses continue to be funded through investment income and ancillary operations. Partners in Caring Campaign 76.5% Capital Equipment for Peace Arch Hospital 11.5% Administration & Indirect Costs 10.6% Because People Matter Grants/ Community 1.4% (Phase 1: completion of the hospital’s 5/6 floors) (Funded through ancillary operations & investment income) We are all partners in caring annual report 07/08 9 Community Support Each year numerous individuals and groups help raise much-needed funds for important health services and medical equipment. We are particularly grateful to all of those who volunteered, attended and organized events and other fundraising activities in support of the Foundation. This community spirit is vital in supporting the future of health care in White Rock and South Surrey. Peace Arch Hospital & Community Health Foundation “Our hospital is facing a huge challenge in keeping up with health care needs. It’s important to support Peace Arch Hospital as it supports us in safeguarding and enhancing the quality of life for all members of our community.” — Louise McKnight Chair, Great Pumpkin Run/Walk “The people of White Rock and South Surrey should know that Peace Arch Hospital remains a place of caring where all health care providers remain committed to optimum care for every patient.” — Jeff Purkis, Physician, Peace Arch Hospital & Foundation Board Member 11 We are all partners in caring annual report 07/08 Our Donors The generous individuals and organizations in our community who give in support of the Foundation each year constitute the heart and soul of our hospital. Thanks to their gifts, the Foundation is able to support the hospital in meeting the health care needs of our community.
