From the President’s Desk
By Jim Stenzel, Vice President
Well, this is my first and last
message to you as acting president, for as of this evening you
have a new president. But before
I disclose to you your new HOA
officers, I want to thank someone
who has given mightily of her time
and talents, and made a real difference in our community. Donna
Burns Phillips has resigned her
position on the board due to significant work conflicts. We will
miss her clear-headed leadership,
eloquence, and efficient meeting
management. Donna, thank you
so much for your selfless contributions.
At tonight’s meeting, we reinstalled Ruth Ann Blevins and
Charles Smith as directors, and
at closed meeting after the annual
meeting we elected officers for
next year. Ruth Ann, Kay Nezamis, and I have retained our offices of treasurer, secretary, and
vice president respectively. We
elected Alan Wells to be our new
president. I wish Al great success
in his new position; I know he’ll
do a great job. FYI, Al is already
serving as chairperson of our Information Services Committee,
and is responsible for maintaining
the HOA website.
I am sad to announce the resignations of Doug Prianciani from
the HOA board of directors, Michelle Prianciani as chairperson
of the special events committee,
and Helene Glasson as chairperson
of the entertainment committee.
Once again we thank each of these
people for their service to our community and their desire to make
Del Tura a wonderful place to live.
Doug, as a retired law enforcement
officer, brought a unique and valuable point of view to our board
discussions. Michelle brought her
exuberant and caring personality to bear on the organization of
some incredibly successful and
memorable events, the most recent
being the International Food Festival. Helene has led a committee responsible for bringing us outstanding professional shows and dances
for many seasons.
However for every door that
closes, another opens. I am pleased
to announce that Priscilla Peterson
and Betty Ewing have offered, and
received the board’s support and
approval, to co-chair the entertainment committee. Backed up
by their husbands, this dynamic
duo promise to continue the high
standard of entertainment that has
become a hallmark of our Del
Tura social calendar. Expect to
hear from them as they gather your
feedback for future entertainment.
More good news: Betty Ewing
approached me at coffee this past
Tuesday, concerned that we do not
do enough to promote membership
in FMO; especially given the importance FMO has in monitoring
legislation that could be adverse
to our interests as manufactured
home owners. She was concerned
enough that she enlisted, on the
spot, as our FMO representative
(and membership coordinator).
You will be seeing Betty at the
front table with Doris Meyer starting in the next week or two. Yea
Betty; and many thanks to you!!
Lastly, it was clear from discussion at the annual meeting, that we
continue to face challenges regarding HOA membership. Increasing
numbers of new residents are not
yet retired, and some are frustrated
with the timing of such things as
ticket sales, daytime events, HOA
office hours, etc. They feel hopelessly locked out of many of the
amenities the rest of us take for
granted. I think all of us on the
board came away with the clear
message that we must start thinking of ways to make activities,
events, and services more accessible to this growing demographic
in our community.
Okay, that’s almost enough, but
one last thing: Your HOA board is
here for you, volunteering our time
on your behalf. We always welcome your thoughtful feedback
and questions. We do not welcome, nor should we be expected
to endure ill manners or abusiveness. Please don’t be part of the
problem, be part of the solution.
Ciao,
Jim

This month’s update of the
Fruit Picking Committee activity:
Just a continuous note of gratitude to the generous residents of
Del Tura. The committee would
like to keep the community appraised of our progress and to give
the proper, well deserved Kudos
and special thanks to our resident
fruit donors. Without these donors the needy of our community
would not receive the fruit they
need to supplement whatever diet
they do have available to them.
So, to date (our picking season runs from 10/1to 9/30 each
year) the team has picked 2365
pounds – 1.2 tons of fruit, namely: grapefruit, tangerines, carambola a.k.a. starfruit and oranges.
So far this season the residents
who opened up their properties
for our opportunity to pick their
fruit were: Helene Stell, Bill Hurley, Paul Schaefer, Lora Welch,
Berti Dugo, Bill Smith, Charles
Smith, Jan and Tom Condos,
Millie Hanrahan, Larry Duval,
Nancy Moyer, Marilyn Hanson,
Joe Bevilacqua, Philip Stevens,
Frank Spinale, Sandy Mulvaney
and Rick Morgan.
God bless you and we thank
you very much! Have a great and

By Bob Miller
F.S. 723 is entitled “Florida
Mobile Home Act” and is a very
important document. Every home
owner should have a copy in order
to be knowledgeable of the obligations and responsibilities of the
park owner and the homeowners.
This Statute should be kept with
your Prospectus, Rules and Regulations and Lot Lease.
Section 732.037 is one section
that is often violated by park owner. Section 732.037 states that “A
park owner shall give written notice to each affected mobile home
owner and the board of directors of the HOA at least 90 days
prior to any increase in lot rental
amount or reduction in services.”
When the park owner fails to give
a 90 Day Notice, many HOA

the DBPR will take action against
the park owner.

FISH NEWS
By Ginnie Benjamins
8/9-15
1/16
What a Month!
FISH volunteers were honored
to host a sit down lovely lunch for
our Over 90’s residents. It was
held in Herons Glen Restaurant
on February 3, on a sunny afternoon. We had 38 over 90’s along
with a guest of their choosing and
FISH volunteers to host the 15
tables. We had gentlemen FISH
volunteers greeting everyone
as they exited their cars and escorting them inside. Edna Smith
played while our guests were arriving and having their picture
taken and then they were escorted to their table where a corsage
or boutonnière was waiting for
them. When everyone was settled
Rich Symes gave the blessing.
Each one had already chosen their
meal and the wait staff knew who
received what dinner by colored
tags on their name cards. It all
went so smoothly I hardly noticed
the staff. What a good job they
did. After dinner and before dessert, Sue Symes read a poem that
she had shared with her mother.
The author is unknown, but the
poem follows this article. Don
Anten sang some old-time songs
with Edna accompanying him.
Our guests were swinging their
heads along with the music. After dessert each host or hostess
gave each over 90’s person at his
or her table a gift bag with a fish
nightlight. Just before they left
they were presented with their
photograph in a yellow wrapper
with FISH on the front. The occasion was elegant and everyone
seemed to enjoy it, including
the FISH volunteers, who were
Ruth Anten, Christine Raynor,
Rich Keen, Garnet Fleming, Gail
Reeve, John Roy, Marge Lord,
Gerry Benjamins, Sue Symes,
Don Anten, Rich Symes, Ellie Haug, Lynne Roy, Joanne
Nitka, Evangelia Klonaris, Betty
Scheetz and Ginnie Benjamins.
The flowers, which included a
large vase of flowers at our welcome table, were a gift from Winn
Dixie Stores.
The following Tuesday FISH
had their annual Bake Sale. There
were 58 bakers and cooks who
donated their time and money to
bring their goods to the clubhouse
the day before the sale. Some
even came to drop off when it
was pouring outside. Thank you
all very much. On Tuesday we
set up five tables of cookies, pies,
cakes, fudge and pastries. As
people came in for Coffee many
items were sold. After Coffee
everything went. The Bake Sale
was an amazing success and we
topped last year’s sale. I am at a
loss of words to tell you all thank
you for everything you purchased
and the donations given to us by
so many individuals.
Speaking of donations, Hometown America had a golf outing
and held a 50/50. As a result of
that they made a sizable donation
to FISH. Thank you for thinking
if us. We so appreciate it!
FISH is looking for another
“Bookie”. One of our Bookies
had to stop since she is working
full time now. A “Bookie” does
not take bets! It is a person, who
once every two months, has the
FISH book for one week. That
person answers the FISH message
line and finds rides for someone
who may need one or directs their
call to the right person. If any
FISH volunteer would like to help
by becoming a “Bookie”, please
let me know.
February is FISH month and
we thank all the people who made
this past February most outstanding.
FISH is so pleased that FISH
volunteers, Rich and Sue Symes
were named “Couple of the Year”
at the February HOA meeting.
They are extremely deserving of
the honor!
Below is the poem Sue Symes
read at our luncheon.
TODAY I’M 90
Today, dear Lord, I’m 90 and
so much I haven’t done.
I hope, dear Lord, you’ll let me
live until I’m 91.
But then if I haven’t finished
all that I want to do,
Could you let me stay awhile,
until I’m 92?
So many places I want to go, so
very much I want to see,
So do you think you could
manage to make it 93?
The world is changing very
fast; there is so much in store,
I’d really like it very much to
live ‘til 94.
And if by then I’m still alive,
I’d love to stay ‘til 95!
More plans will be in the air, so
I’d really like to stick
And see that happens to the
world, when I’m 96!
I k know, dear Lord, it’s much
to ask and it must be nice in heaven.
But really I’d like to stay until
I’m 97!
I know by then I won’t be fast,
and sometimes very late,
But it would be so pleasant to
be around ‘til 98!
I will have seen many things,
and had a wonderful time,
So I’m sure I will be willing to
leave at 99!!

CHENS CHINA BISTRO
Just a short drive from Del Tura,
on Pine Island Road, hidden
amongst all those strip malls and
chain restaurants, sits Chen’s China Bistro. Here you will find authentic Chinese food served by
the authentic Chinese staff.
Chen’s provides a very pleasant
atmosphere of dark wood tables,
leather booths and a small “sit at”
bar. The impression is that of an
upscale bistro.
This visit, one of many, was at-
FISH

(997-3474)
tended by a large group with tastes
that varied from basic Chinese to the
spicy nuances of Szechuan. Incredibly, all the entrees came out at nearly
the same time AND were hot.
The menu includes a section for
those requiring no or low fat and
low or no sodium, not unheard of
but certainly an unusual offering
in world of Chinese restaurants.
The Lunch and Dinner Combination menu includes white rice or
pork fried rice and choice of soup
or egg roll. The soups are authentic. For me, the egg drop soup is
delicious. Others in our group
bragged on the won ton and the
hot and sour soups as well.
The main entrees include all
the favorites and are right sized,
plenty enough to fill you but not
so much to send you home holding your sides. The General Tso’s
chicken, the Szechuan pork and
the Hunan shrimp will light up
your taste buds, but gently. The
Lo Mein dishes are plentiful and
capture the essence of Chinese
cooking. The barbequed ribs were
meaty, tasty and a bit chewy (Chinese style).
For the traditionalists there
three duck entrees from which to
choose. You may enjoy the classic Peking Duck, whole or half.
Chens Crispy or Lychee Duck are
served only as a half.
As you might suspect, the
menu is a typical Chinese menu,
more selection than can be reviewed or sampled. Simply select
your favorite(s) and enjoy.
The bar features domestic and
imported beers with a nice selection of the oriental favorites. The
wine list is simple but adequate.
Finish your meal with the traditional tea and almond fortune
cookie and your Chen’s experience is complete. It seems our
group all had the fortune – “you
will return to Chen’s China Bistro soon”. Try Chen’s and that is
likely to be your fortune, too.

Wench
By Dolan Perkins-Valdez
Submitted by Marjorie Fisher
This is a fictional account of
slave women forced to being mistresses of their white masters in
the years leading up to the Civil
War.
The word ‘Wench’ has taken
on several connotations over the
centuries including a young woman, a wanton female, a well as a
negress of any age, especially one
in service.
Our protagonist, Lizzie, perhaps fulfills all of these meanings.
She was thirteen years old when
Drayle, the plantation owner,
first approached her to fulfill his
sexual desires. She had been purchased at a slave market as a seven year old and was under surveillance until her time was ripe. The
condescending acceptance of this
arrangement by masters wives
was a given throughout the South.
The escape from the brutal
summer heat took the plantation
owners with their slave entourage
to a prestigious resort in Ohio.
Drayle lavished Lizzie since no
wife was included in the journey
to divide his time. His teaching
her to read set her apart, enabling
her to become an activist against
the sin of making merchandise of
men and describing the South to
be one great brothel where women were degraded to believe prostitution was honorable.
With Drayle’s wife being infertile, Lizzie was forced to bear
his children, having two by age
sixteen.
Ohio was rife with bounty
hunters getting vast awards for
runaway slaves. Many of Lizzies’
friends were victims receiving
cruel punishment for their attempt
to be free. Lizzie could not chance
this, realizing her children were
not yet on the plantation. Her intense desire for freedom had to be
compromised.
The Ohio resort was closed
when locals campaigned against
the slave concubines. The facility
was sold to a church conference
in 1856, ultimately becoming
Wilberforce University, an African American University where
Lizzies’ children were schooled,
as condoned by Drayle.
This book poignantly describes
the ravage and inhumanity of
slavery, “mans inhumanity to
man.”

Friendship has many definitions, connotations and expectations. Friendship can take the form
of a group, club or organization.
The Good Timers Singles group is
a wonderful example of such a definition. It connotes people coming
together to support each other and
work, so to speak, to help everyone have a “good time”. Some expectations include attendance at a
monthly meeting; and involvement
in the development and execution
of activities.
This group has a great history of
such friendship. Longtime friends
include: Mildred Ciccarelli: 18
years; Alice Gash: 14 years; Barbara Boyd: 12 years; Susan Savitt:
12 years; Peg McTernan: 11 years;
Alice Harris: 7 years; Bea Botterbusch: 5 years and Bill Southwick:
5 years. What a great thing!
The group is always welcoming new members. Four gentlemen
who are considering membership
attended our January meeting.
Ronald Boshaw joined immediately. Welcome to Ron. It is easy
to join. You can attend a monthly
meeting as a guest. The meetings
are held the first Tuesday of every
month at 5:00 p.m. in the Jacaranda
Ballroom of the Clubhouse. For
further information, call Lyn Bailey at 239-5423-9020 or Pat Clemens at 239-567-0716. Membership
dues are $25.00 a year.
We have monthly birthday parties to celebrate everyone’s birthday. We have interesting events
such as the Road Rally (a scavenger hunt) to be held in April and
the Kentucky Derby to be held in
May. The group is always looking for new ideas and encourages
members to be actively involved.
The January Birthday celebration dinner was held at B & B Fish
and Chips in Cape Coral. All in
attendance complemented the chef
and the service was wonderful.
Mary Lou Pudlo hosted the February Birthday celebration, which
was held at our Fountain Grille on
February 24. You can’t beat this
Italian Buffet and Vino.
Alice Harris will host the March
Birthday celebration. We will be
going to TP Houlihans, North Ft
Myers, for corn beef and cabbage.
Mary Lou Pudlo is president
of our group, I am vice-president
(Joyce Lienert), Lyn Bailey is sec-
retary, Lorna Callen is treasurer
and Joan Wiley has charge of the
Sunshine Committee.
I am a new member of the group
and a new resident in Del Tura.
Buffalo, N. Y. is my original home;
and, as we will probably all agree,
“There is no place like home”. But
I find Del Tura a close contender! I
love to play cards/games, golf and
bowl and always root for the Buffalo Bills. My three children now
have children of their own; seven
total, with three in college. Something I am very proud of is that two
of my grandsons are Eagle Scouts.
Being a Registered Nurse has been
an important and rewarding part of
my life, and I still continue with
part-time work in this profession.
Ginger Grant is my dog. Do you
recognize the name? She has boy
friends in Tampa. Their names are
Thurston (Howl) and Gilligan.
The Good Timers Singles want
to extend their appreciation to
Susan Savitt for her dedication
and commitment as author of this
news article during the past several
years. She has done an outstanding
job and I hope I can be a comparable replacement.
“You don’t just luck into things
as much as you’d like to think you
do. You build step by step, whether
it’s friendships or opportunities.”

GID POOL
It’s comedy for adults…..not
adult comedy!
It’s easy, these days, to think
about later life and retirement as
limiting. And with good reason:
Nest eggs are smaller than they
should be; and Social Security
and Medicare are looking pale.
Millions of people are delaying
retirement and scaling back plans
for the future.
And then there’s Gid Pool –
He’s got opinions and he’s not
afraid to share them!
Almost seven years ago, on
something of a lark, he enrolled
in a class near his home in North
Port, Fla., that taught stand-up
comedy. He was 61 years old.
Today, he performs in clubs,
theaters, colleges and corporate
settings throughout much of the
South. For good measure, he
spends, on average, a week each
month on cruise ships, where he
teaches comedy classes.
None of this has been easy.
There’s been no big break, no
chance encounter with show
business royalty and certainly no
overnight success. Indeed, for all
the evenings where Mr. Pool’s
act brings down the house, there
are still shows like Buford, where
he ends the night deflated and
nagged by doubts.
Pursuing a career in comedy, of
course, isn’t for everyone. (Most
retirement wish lists don’t include
subjecting oneself regularly to the
judgments of complete strangers.)
But Mr. Pool’s story—filled with
mentors, cheats, hard work, anxieties, setbacks, triumphs and, in
the end, much laughter—is both
an inspiration and a reminder of
just how good, and how expansive, later life still can be.

What Do Low Oil Prices Mean
for Investors?
As you’ve no doubt noticed, your trips to the gas station have been a lot more pleasant these past several months. There’s not much doubt that low oil
prices have been welcome to you as a driver. But when oil is cheap, is that good for you as an investor?
There’s no clear-cut answer. But consider the following effects of low oil prices:
•
•
Positive impact on economy — When you spend less at the gas pump, relative to recent years, what will you do with your savings? Like most people, you’ll probably spend most of it on goods and services. If you multiply the amount of your increased spending by the millions of other
Americans who are also saving money on gas, you can see that you and your fellow consumers are likely adding billions of dollars to the econo-
my. Typically,
T
a strong economy is also good for the financial markets — and for the people who invest in them.
Different results for different sectors — Different sectors within the financial markets may respond in different ways to low oil prices, even if the
overall effect is generally positive. For example, businesses such as consumer goods companies and auto manufacturers may respond favorably to
cheaper oil and gas. But the picture might be quite a bit dif
different for energy companies.
You could spend a lot of time and effort trying to adjust your investment portfolio in response to low oil prices. In fact, you may well want to consult with
your financial professional to determine which moves might make sense for your individual situation. Yet
Y there’s actually a bigger lesson to be learned here:
Don’t overreact to temporary developments. The recent decline in oil prices has certainly had an economic impact, but no one can predict how long these
prices will stay low or what other factors may arise that would affect the financial markets. That’s why you can’t reconfigure your portfolio based on particular
events, whatever they may be — oil price drops, interest-rate fluctuations, political squabbles at home, natural disasters in faraway lands, and so on.
If you can keep from being overly influenced by specific events, you may be able to gain at least two key benefits: First, by not making trades constantly in
reaction to the headlines of the day, you can avoid piling up heavy fees and commissions —costs that can reduce the return rate on your investments. Second,
you’ll find that if you aren’t always thinking about what’s going on in the world today, you can focus your investment efforts more intensely on where you
want to be tomorrow. The most successful investors set long-term goals and don’t focus on factors they cannot control, such as oil prices, interest-rate changes
or other economic events. Instead, these investors make adjustments, as necessary, to accommodate changes in their goals as well as other changes, such as
revisions in tax laws — but they basically stick to their same approach for the long term.
So be aware of low oil prices, but don’t get so “pumped” about them that you sludge up your consistent investment strategy — because that strategy has
the energy to keep you moving toward your important objectives.

Reflections
“The Springs of Our Lives”
By Dianne Roderick
Another spring is just a few
weeks away! It’s hard to believe
that the first quarter of the year
has almost passed. The days and
weeks seem to fly by so swiftly especially here in Del Tura. Our
busy lives keep us on a continuous treadmill, leaving little time
to think about the seasons. Let’s
get off our treadmills for a short
while and think about how the
springs here compare to the earlier spring times of our lives.
For each season there is a reason to celebrate life and all of its
gifts. Spring allows us to pause,
reflect, and watch the beauty of
nature unfold before our eyes.
Like an artist that brings a blank
canvas to life, nature blesses us
with so many wondrous gifts.
With each spring comes a chance
to focus on the new life and rebirth of the fauna and flora that
surrounds us. How do these miracles compare to our own lives?
Like the gentle spring rains
that will quench the thirsty grass,
spring also gives us a chance to
cleanse our hearts and souls, a
chance to celebrate the new life
surrounding us here in “Paradise.”
We can all agree that spring is
certainly quite different here than
it is was up north. I
can remember getting so excited about
the daffodils popping
up in April, then a
frost would appear
and those beautiful,
hopeful spring flowers would disappear.
We are so blessed to
awaken each day to
these continuous miracles of nature.
Imagine that we
are artists with large,
blank canvases in
front of us. We are
asked to paint a mural that would depict the springs
of our lives, past and present.
After a brief recollection of our
thoughts, we dip into the palette

that holds all the special colors
of our lives. Our brushes are suddenly filled with elegant greens
to create a lush green field. Next
our sky is covered with the most
beautiful shades of blue. These
colors may be the only similari-
ties between you and the other
artists. Each mural will tell your
story and the shades of each color
that you choose will tell a unique
story of your life’s journey.
In my mind’s eye the earlier
springs of my life up north bring
me back to those carefree days of
my youth. Finally saying farewell
to those cold, dark, gray days of
winter, and looking forward to the
brighter, longer days
of the new season.
More time to spend
outside playing with
our friends-flying our
kites, playing baseball, or riding our
bikes.
Kite flying! That
memory would definitely have a special
place on my mural.
The colors would be
bright and depict happiness, and unfortunately some sad, dark
colors, too. I remember our Dad patiently
showing us how to make our own
kites out of newspaper and old
pieces of sticks. Then going to
Mom’s old rag bag sack (nothing
ever went to waste) to find some
material for the tail. We couldn’t
wait to get that tail and ball of
string attached! We would be so
excited-so careful to find the right
spot, so very cautious. Then....you
guessed it! In no time our beautiful soaring kite was tangled on a
tree limb or telephone wire. Well,
we did have fun while it lasted!
Of course it wasn’t all play.
Each spring brought changes--and with each season came more
responsibilities. Our murals of
the past are filled with colors that
represent our struggles and accomplishments, they define who
we are. The scenery may change
along the way for each of us but
each new spring gives us an opportunity to renew and reflect on
our lives. Like a new blossom,
spring gives each of us a chance
for new beginnings; perhaps allowing us to fill our next blank
canvas with more vibrant colors!
Happy Spring!
Beware of Del Tura Intruder
By Joan Stevenson
At 2:00 a.m. my 90 year old
mother called out to me. “Come
quick. There’s a frog in the toilet.” Ah, the joys Florida living, I
thought as I wrestled with my bed
sheet.
Mom quaked in the bathroom,
one hand over her mouth, while
a fat frog frolicked in the rosescented toilet bowl. Fast as an alligator’s jaws, I slammed the lid
and hit the lever. FLUSH! Mother
and I high-fived, then I lifted the
lid and peered inside. “He’s still
there,” I said. “Stand back. I’m
going in!” Mother, a former formidable Frisbee thrower, tossed
me a washcloth, and like a spider
with a fly, I pounced on my prey.
I fought to hold him, but the
agile acrobat wriggled from my
grasp, whizzed by my head, and
hit the wall. While I remained in
hot pursuit, I stubbed my toe on
the tub. “Yikes,” I cried as the
tiny paratrooper sprang to the
sink and propelled himself into
the plastic cup (reserved for soaking Mother’s dentures).
The force of the crash-landing
sent Mom’s teeth airborne, overturned the plastic cup, and trapped
froggie, like pheasant under glass.
“Aha,” I said, gleeful at my
good luck. I planned to slide the
cup to the counter’s edge and
catch the critter in the cloth before he hit the ground. But, like
a blast from a bazooka, the feisty
frog freed himself from his prison
and landed-SPLAT-on the sleeve
of my nightshirt!
I screamed, then Mother
screamed, disturbing our decrepit
dog, Rambo, who bolted into the
bathroom, wheezing and drooling.
I yanked the cold frog from my
shirt and a stinky squirt ran down
my wrist. “Yuck! He’s wet”, I
said. “Open the front door.”
Mother scurried like a startled squirrel. I sprinted behind
her as the frightened amphibian
squirmed in my sticky hand. Like
Olympians headed for the finish
line, we charged out the door.
Once released, the intruder happily hopped off to the safety of
the garden.
I breathed in the fragrance of
freesia, and Mom shuffled inside to fill Rambo’s water bowl.
Seconds later, Mother shrieked.
“Come quick,” she yelled.
“There’s a snake in the sink!”

Know Your Volunteer
Mary Harrell
By Barb Rouillard
Mary Harrell devotes her volunteer time here at Del Tura
working in the HOA office, singing in The Choralaires, being a
vital member of the Entertainment Committee, and decorating
the Clubhouse glass display cases
in the south hallway especially at
Christmastime. We have all seen
her beautiful work. She also sings
in her church choir and serves on
the Altar Guild.
Mary and her late husband, David, moved to Del Tura 15 years
ago. Prior to buying their lovely
home on Avenida Del Tura, she
and David lived on their boat!
But, I get ahead of myself. Let me
start from the beginning...
Mary is originally from North
Dakota and David moved there
with his family when his dad
found work as a drilling contractor in the oil fields. They met in
the 5th grade! He pulled her ponytail and washed her face with
snow, and she still dated him all
throughout Junior High and High
School! Eventually, David went
on to study in Dallas at SMU, and
Mary went off to Concordia University in Minnesota. They found
it too hard to be away from each
other so Mary moved to Texas
and they married on August 27,
1961. Together, they raised two
boys.
David designed computer systems, and Mary worked as a chair
side dental assistant and front
desk receptionist for several dentists over the years.
They both loved the water, and
together with friends, chartered a
boat and cruised St. Thomas and
the Virgin Islands. After a lifechanging event, David announced
that he was going to retire. They
bought their own boat and docked
it on the Gulf in Houston. For 2 ½
years, Captain David and his First
Mate, Mary, enjoyed cruising
all the Bahamas and the Florida
Keys.
They began to look for a
“home base” in Florida and in
1999 bought in Del Tura. When
asked what she liked about Del
Tura Mary stated, “The attached
garages, lanais and sidewalks.”
Unfortunately, Hurricane Charlie
took a toll on their boat, and they
decided it was time to sell.
David honed his woodworking
skills while working for a shutter

Save Our Strays
By Helen Wythe
Thank you for kind and generous support of the Del Tura Save
Our Strays Program by attending
the 2nd Annual Cat’s Pajamas
Fundraiser.
Just a few reminders:
DEL TURA SOS PROGRAM
– FEEDING OF FERAL
CAT COMMUNITY
The Del Tura SOS Program
is sanctioned by the Lee County
Trap, Neuter and Return Program
(TNR). This Program is governed
by the Lee County Animal Ordinance 9-20 pages 15 & 16.
“Section 9C
Caregivers of a community cat
or community cat colony shall be
exempt under the provisions of
Section 9 Nuisance Animals, Section 20 License Requirements and
Section 21 Animal Identification
Requirements by furnishing the
Director of Lee County Domestic
Animal Services a signed statement agreeing to the following
conditions:
1. Regularly feed the community cat colony including weekends and holidays insuring sanitary conditions at all times.
2. Regularly and frequently
trap the community cats over the
age of twelve (12) weeks for purposes of sterilization.
3. Identify all community cats
by tipping their ears.
4. All community cats must be
vaccinated for rabies.
5. All community cats with illness and/or injury that cannot be
provided with treatment shall be
humanely euthanized to prevent
pain and suffering.
6. Caregivers are not permitted
to release community cats onto
private or public property without
the permission of property owner.
7. Any caregiver determined
to be in violation of Section 9(C)
shall be issued a written warning
and be permitted up to and including thirty (30) days compliance.
Failure to comply may result in
the issuance of a citation.”
In the past before the Del Tura
HOA Board had the wisdom and
foresight to create and support an
SOS Program it was against the
Lee County ordinances to feed
the feral cats. Now that Del Tura
is part of the Lee County TNR
Program it is a REQUIREMENT
to regularly feed the community
cats.
FINDING NEW FOREVER
HOMES
Many times when a resident
of Del Tura moves into a facility
where they can receive intensive
health care – their pets are not allowed to join them. While many
of do not support this – as we all
know pets can do wonders to improve one’s moral and outlook on
life. If you know of someone who
is in this situation- there are variety of options to find the pet a new
forever home.
PLEASE DO NOT JUST
KICK THE PET OUTSIDE.
There is another option, see
below:
Helping Paws Animal Sanctuary is a 501(c) 3 non-profit, no kill
shelter, housing over 150 healthy
cats and kittens but also special
needs, FIV and FELV cats. They
are housed in rooms not cages;
waited on by loving volunteers,
have toys, TV’s with cat videos
and water fountains. The goal of
the shelter is to not only find them
homes, but to provide a wonder-
ful home for the cats while they
are in our care. Contact Details
are: 10060 Mallory E Pkwy Unit
D, Saint James City , FL 33956
Phone: 239-283-9100 Email: [email protected] .
The Del Tura SOS now has a
relationship with Roofs for Roofus of North Fort Myers. They operate a website where we can list
these pets looking for a forever
home. They also operate a booth
at the Petco in Gulf Coast where
pets are shown and matched to
forever homes.
Thank you for your assistance
in helping ensure that Del Tura’s
Feral Cat Community is healthy.

Friday Shuffleboard League
By Jack Blevons
Time for my monthly update
for our shuffleboard league again.
I am writing this on February 6.
The standings that I write here are
totals after today’s games. By the
time you read this we will have
played another 9 games. Both
flights have some really good
competition going and the standings haven’t really changed a lot
since my last letter in February’s
The Tower. In the “A” flight Bob/
Donna Crawford are still out front
with a 27/6 record. They are followed closely by Dave/Nancy
Denny at 25/8 and third place has
two teams, Ben Hargraves/Joe
Vigilante and Glenn/Mary Kay
Tointon both tied at 24/9. The
“B” flight also has a tight race
going on. Gail Hargraves/Judy
Lessard are leading with a 19/14
record and they are followed by
two teams, Glenn/Diana Camp
and Mary Pimental/Kathy Boesol
at 16/17. Leon/Mary Lou Buss are
one game behind them at 15/18.
So, with 15 games left to play in
our season which ends on March
13, it is still anyones game, so to
speak.
The way the flights are made
up makes the competition well
matched. It gives everyone an
equal chance to get into the trophy positions that are given out
9/15
at our annual Bust-Up party in
March after our end of season
8-team Tournament in which the
top four finishers in both flights
meet in the Tournament to determine who wins the trophies that
are awarded to the top three finishers. So, at this writing, we are
about two-thirds through our regular season. We still have enough
games left to cause some changes
in both flights. I think I can speak
for all and say we’ve been having a lot of fun. If you have noticed, our courts are being used
by more people this year than any
year I have seen. Not only by our
league and our Wednesday travel
league but also by large groups on
Tuesdays and Thursdays who just
come down for the fun of playing.
In closing I want to thank
Hometown again for the great
job their workers did in cleaning
our courts and also for their effort
every Friday morning on blowing
them clean before we play. Also
a big thanks for the new lights on
all the chalk-boards and supplying me with chalk and parts to
repair the equipment when it gets
broken. Janet and I are glad to do
that as long as we get the parts to
make the repairs and Hometown
has provided us with necessary
parts.
We have a great community
here and great management up
in the front office. That hasn’t always been the case but we have
great people up there now. I have
met our Community manager, Mr.
Taylor, and find that he is an easy
person to get along with and have
always been treated well by his
assistant Julie. They are both really nice people. Nice to have you
here running our community.
Before I close I would like to
make one request. For everyone
who drives a vehicle in this community, please know that the 16mph signs that are posted here in
our community, mean you too!
Unless you are on an emergency
trip to the hospital, that 16 mph
limit applies to you as well as it
does to me. We live on Avenida
Del Tura and I swear that some
of you must think you are on Hwy
41 out front. I have heard the
same about Via Del Sol. Is it going to take a pedestrian or a biker
or someone in a golf-cart getting
seriously injured or killed out here
to wake you unconcerned people
up? You know who you are because it’s always the same people
that we see. Are you the same
people who don’t care about red
lights or other laws outside our
community as well? Please, give
us all a break and slow down, at
least here in our community. Most
of us want to live a little longer.
Thank you.

The standings for the Mark and
Mary Ford Softball League lists
the Del Tura Amigos on the top
spot after the first ten games of
their twenty game schedule. The
team waltzed through the first
round of competition with wins
over all seven opponents. The
offense was clicking throughout
the round as the team scored 120
runs and had 173 hits. The squad
scored over 20 runs on four different occasions and held the opponents to a total of 26 runs.
The second round action started
with a 10 to 1 triumph over Pine
Lakes to run the record to 8 and 0
but then came a bump in the road
as Lake Fairways, last two year’s
champions, snuck by the Amigos
with a last inning run for a 6 to
5 win. Though disappointing,
the guys got back on the horse by
slamming out 29 hits and scoring
a 25 to 6 win over Heritage. At
press time, the Amigos are now 9
and 1 and in a tie for first place in
the league.
The defense, particularly in
the infield, has been outstanding throughout the entire season
with shortstop Jim Hamilton
and contributors Rick Bourquin,
Mike Stark, Bob Neilson, Rob
Fringuelli, Joe Angelilli, Vaughn
Wedge and Dan Duffy doing yeomen’s work.
The offensive onslaught has
been led by ten different team
members hitting over .600 with
Rick Bourquin leading the way
at .720 (18 hits in 25 at bats).
Hamilton has knocked in the most
runs with 25 followed closely by
Bourquin (19) and Wedge at 14.
The team as a whole is hitting
.573 through the first ten games.
The games for the Amigos will
continue throughout the month
of March at the Carmalita Sports
Complex at the corner of Florida
St. and Carmalita in Punta Gorda.
All games begin at 5:30 p.m. on
Mondays and Wednesdays. Del
Tura residents have been aplenty
in the crowds and the team looks
forward to their support through
the playoffs.

participants in a 6-person scramble. One highlight was a hole-inone on 8 West by 9-hole golfer,
Skipper Cook. That makes for a
memorable day! The President’s
Cup almost finished the four
rounds of Match Play: The final
round should have been February
5, but it was rained out and rescheduled for the 11th. February
9 Hometown America sponsored
a cook-out followed by golf for
all interested golfers. And 120
golfers from Del Tura and Tara
Woods participated. The 21st of
February was Groundskeepers’
revenge. Those who played saw
how vengeful our groundskeepers were feeling! February also
included the Valentine’s Tournament on the 12th. We will then
move into March with Men and
Women’s Member-Guest. With
so many events time just goes too
fast.

Wednesday Traveling
Shuffleboard League
By Glenn Tointon
Our traveling team started slow
but since our first shuffleboard
match we have gone wild beating
Laurel Estates, 18-12, Six Lakes,
20-10, and Heritage, 25-5.
After hitting a road bump losing to two powerful teams, Tara
Woods and Lake Arrowhead, we
bounced back tying Windmill Village. We are currently in fourth
place out of eight teams slightly
behind Windmill village.
Our team is led by MaryKay
Tointon at 14-5, Donna Crawford
at 16-6, Bob Crawford at 14-8,
Dave Denny at 13-8, Diana Camp
ing our Association. It is possible
to be a year-round member or an
Associate Member if you are only
here for a few months. Liz can explain your options.
The last LEGA event was at
Pine Lakes on January 14. Eight
ladies attended. The next LEGA
is in March. Sign up in the Dungeon. If you have any questions,
please see Ruth Ann Blevins.
LEGA is for everyone, the tournament is flighted with cash prizes
sent to our Pro Shop. And lunch
is included!! Our next Invitational
was at Meyerlee on February 25.
Invitational’s are team events.
See Jan Pedersen for more information.
Ryan continues his Wednesday
clinics. Each week has a different theme. The clinics will run
through March. Space is limited,
so please sign up.
Many of us enjoy going to the
Pub after golf but remember, you
can also go to the restaurant for an
excellent breakfast between 8:00
and 11:00 a.m. It is a nice way to
meet up with fellow golfers and
others who just want someone
else to fix them a tasty breakfast.
Good coffee, too!
When playing golf be careful of your equipment and that
of your fellow players. If you hit
your own equipment, for example, your own cart while chipping
up, it is a two stroke penalty. If
you can’t wait for the golfers to
at 11-8, Judy Lessard at 11-9,
Glenn Camp at 9-8, Pete Slusarski at 8-11.
Other players are Jack and Janet Reinen, Glenn Tointon, Marylou and Leon Buss, Marlene Eck,
and Al Oostema.

clear the green and you hit their
cart there is no penalty but you
probably owe them an apology
because you were in such a hurry
to hit, guess what? hitting their
cart stopped your ball! Give them
the few seconds to move out of
your way and maybe, just maybe
the ball could make the green.
In case anyone doubted how
hard this game is I hope you
watched Tiger Woods in Phoenix.
Not only was he having trouble
driving the ball, he could not
chip, pitch or putt. How could Tiger forget those? Yes, it is a head
game but still, he is Tiger. So,
give yourself a break and remember, while it is his profession it is
just a very hard game for us.

Health And Wellness
By Mary White
The season has started off at a
fast pace. The Health Expo on January 21st was a big success. Planning is already underway for January 20, 2016 Expo.
Lee County Sheriff Dept.’s
CarFit had over 27 cars registered
and 51 cars came. Wonderful support from our community. Thank
you.
We have two upcoming events
for March. Both on Monday,
March 30:
Mobile Mammo will be here
from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The
bus will set up in front of the clubhouse. Please call to schedule at
239-936-4068
Lee Memorial Blood Mobile
will be here also. Please call Dennis Cotinni for scheduling.
Bike-Walk-Lee Safety Seminar;
3/6/15 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.; Royal
Palm Room of the Clubhouse
I have had requests from 2 of our
Expo vendors wanting to put on a mini
seminar. They would have to have at
least 10 attendees and the seminars
would not be scheduled at coffee.
Lee County CERT. Inc. would
like to have a certification/recertification class for CPR.
The Vein Specialist would like
to do FREE screenings and offer
information on new treatments.
If either of these would be of interest to you, please contact Mary
White at 307-631-5945.
If I receive enough interest I will
be happy to set up a time.

REMINDER!
Please set your garbage,
recycling and yard waste on
the grass or in your driveway.
Sidewalks must stay clear at all
times for wheelchairs and walkers.
I have had people contact me
regarding Household Chemical
Waste. There are certain things that
can not be disposed of in the normal trash pickup. Lee County has a
drop off facility for HOUSEHOLD
CHEMICAL WASTE. The facility is located at: 6441 Topaz Ct.
Ft. Myers and is opened Monday
through Friday 8am to 5pm and
the first Saturday of each month
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
6441 Topaz Court is located between Colonial Blvd and Daniels
Pkwy on a dead end Cul-De-Sac.
Unwanted household products
labeled as flammable, toxic, cor-
rosive and/or reactive are common HCW. Used oil, car batteries
and latex paint are a few examples
of materials that can be recycled.
SAFETY WARNING!
Products should NOT be
placed for regular trash collection or poured down the drain
or poured on the ground. More
than 92% of Florida’s drinking
water is ground water. Burying
used oil in backyards or pouring solvents into storm drains are
examples of improper disposal,
which may cause chronic groundwater pollution problems.
For more information call
the Solid Waste Division at 239533-8000.
Visit www.leegov/solidwaste
for current information.
Information is brought to you
by your Del Tura CERT Team.
A TRIBUTE TO ST. PADDY’S DAY
IRISH FRIENDSHIP WISH
May there always be work for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine on your windowpane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be with you.
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.
And, may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows your dead.
IRISH TOAST
I drink to your health when I’m with you.
I drink to your health when I’m alone.
I drink to your health so often,
I’m starting to worry about my own!
