We believe this mission can be achieved by recruiting for graduate business education qualified U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents who can demonstrate a commitment to The Consortium’s mission and can best assist The Consortium in pursuing this mission. Our Vision The vision of The Consortium is to work toward the day when African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans are no longer underrepresented in management careers in the business community of the United States. T HE CONSOR T IUM • 2013 ANNUAL REPOR T CEO Letter 4 A Letter From The Executive Director You might think that after 46 successful Orientation Programs & Career Forums we would be content to leave well enough alone, but rather than wait to become old fashioned we decided that 2013 was the year to shake things up. We noticed that students were coming to the event better prepared than ever via the efforts of their school career services offices and our pre OP outreach. Corporate partners were telling us that they wanted more meaningful time with students and schools are offering a rich array of programming before classes officially start. Peter J. Aranda, III Executive Director and CEO The Consortium In 2012 we experimented with a Consulting track called SPARC and the results were overwhelmingly positive. Over half the class opted in to a one day session, and using that as a template we decided to reinvent the Orientation Program around four separate tracks: consulting, financial services, marketing and general management, with each student getting to choose two. Other highly rated topics such as an ethics discussion, a diversity workshop in the form of an interactive play and luncheons highlighting industries such as technology and healthcare remained on the program. I’m fond of saying that people vote with their feet, and the results spoke for themselves. Of course when the path leads to New Orleans the walk is downhill. The charms of the Crescent City notwithstanding, returning corporate partners sent more representatives; students chose the tracks in roughly equal numbers and schools had ample time to kick off their campus programs. We are confident that this platform has legs and look forward to fine tuning it in 2014 and beyond. The Consortium took several giant steps forward in 2013. • The entering class was 395 strong, a number unimaginable just five years ago when we enrolled 282 students. • The Board authorized Georgetown as our 18th program, and the initial run of 2013/14 applications suggested that it will be a popular choice. • For the first time in 46 years we are the owners of a small office building in Chesterfield, Missouri, that should accommodate our growth for years to come. In 2014 we are looking forward to continued growth. The OP will head to Austin, Texas and based on this season’s applications we are anticipating record numbers. On behalf of the Board, our employees and the rest of The Consortium, thank you for all your efforts in support of our mission. T HE CONSOR T IUM • 2013 ANNUAL REPOR T Consortium Staff List 5 Administration & staff Executive We, The Consortium staff, are committed to providing excellent customer service to all of our constituents. All of our functional areas, program administration, finance and administration and fund development strive to provide excellent customer service to all our constituents. Along with the members of our growing network, we Peter J. Aranda, III Executive Director and CEO Diane Harris Executive Assistant to the CEO work together to advance The Consortium’s mission to increase diversity in American business education and leadership. Rather it is a holistic process that makes us an integral part of their human resources strategy. To accomplish this we spend considerable time meeting with decision makers and explaining how to best take advantage of what The Consortium has to offer. Typically they define success around hiring goals, and a robust presence at the OP is an increasingly important part of that formula. The numbers bear this out. In a year when overall corporate support edged up +1%, the number of Annual Fund supporters declined while OP revenue recorded a +16% increase. Class of 2013 The outreach process, “Connect, Cultivate and Convert,” is built around leveraging existing relationships and participating in a wide array of conferences where diversity minded companies gather. In 2013 this yielded exciting new partners like Accenture, Bayer, Chevron, Chrysler, Comcast and TIAA-CREF. On the other side of the ledger, some long standing supporters such as American Express and Deloitte departed. 157 companies hired 331 interns 169 companies hired experienced hires 304 Alumni Although they do not appear on the balance sheet, over 7,000 Consortium alumni are a definite asset. Our engagement strategy is tailored to take advantage of the group’s national scope and broad array of professional interests. In 2013 we welcomed Ramón Arras-Rubio (UNC ’95) as the new head of our alumni association to help guide its strategy. Toward that end we have 23 local chapters and in conjunction with corporate partners there were events in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, San Francisco and Louisville. On the industry side, eight Special Interest Groups (SIGS) connect alumni with similar career interests, like Finance and Healthcare. Both held virtual and live events on topics such as internships and recruiting and hosted industry meetings at the OP. Early donor cultivation remains an important part of this strategy. This plays out via a “First of Many” campaign at the OP where we had 93% participation and once on campus, a class gift program. That charitable giving plus community outreach determines which school wins the annual class trophy competition. For the first time ever Yale University, where students took engagement to a new level, including outreach into New Haven, was chosen as our #1 program. Congratulations to the Bulldogs. T HE CONSOR T IUM • 2013 ANNUAL REPOR T Finance & Administration 7 FINANCE & ADMINISTRATION The accompanying financial summaries and detailed auditors report present a picture of stability and strength. Our business model which emphasizes creating value for all of our constituencies, continues to resonate in the post recessionary environment. • Applicants continue to recognize the efficiency of the common application and the enduring value of The Consortium network. They have applied in record numbers even as overall MBA applications are flat. • For schools we have a demonstrated track record of moving the application needle. Over the past five years, four have joined and all have seen jumps in URM applications and enrollment. • In times of budget pressure, corporate partners support diversity organizations not as charitable endeavors but as an integral part of their human resources strategy. The ability to meet 400 top tier MBAs at one time is an unparalleled opportunity. Creating this value over the last several years has improved our financial position to the point where our balance sheet is strong enough to operate the business at a breakeven level and channel any operating surpluses back to member schools. A welcome byproduct of this success was the ability to Orientation Program & Career Forum - Day 1: New Student Welcome Event deploy a portion of our reserves and secure a long term loan to acquire The Consortium’s first ever home office. In December 2013 we took advantage of a weak real estate market and low interest rates to move out of leased space in the city of St. Louis and purchase a free standing 9,100 square foot office building in Chesterfield, Missouri. With +30% more space and upgraded neighborhood and office amenities, it should serve as our home for years to come. T HE CONSOR T IUM • 2013 ANNUAL REPOR T Finance & Administration 8 In addition to the challenges of being our own landlord, changes in the healthcare market have made providing employees this popular benefit increasingly challenging. The most recent tactic was an early renewal to forestall some aspects of the Affordable Care Act. • T otal revenue surged +15% to $28.2 million. $ THOUSANDS CONSORTIUM REVENUES • N o new schools joined, but we received deeper commitments from recent members 30,000 like UC Berkeley and UCLA. Established programs such as Michigan became more 20,000 active as well. • P ublic Support is composed primarily of 10,000 corporate Annual Fund sponsorships and 0 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 Program Services Public Support Investments & Other Orientation Program and Career Forum support. Overall corporate dollars edged +1% higher, as a meaningful presence at the event has been recognized as a key yield driver. • T he Wallace L. Jones Fund was well positioned to take advantage of improvements in financial markets. Investment income doubled and one CONSORTIUM EXPENSE CATEGORIES student in every program received a stipend. 5% Commensurate with the increased enrollment, 3% 87% 2% 2% 1% overall expenses jumped +14% reflecting student numbers and increased tuition costs per student. Despite the increase, The Consortium was still able to devote $0.87 of every revenue dollar to program expenses. Other expense categories remained roughly the same as a percentage of the total. On an absolute basis the Orientation Program, driven by student counts and location, was significantly Tuition Fund Development Orientation Program Recruiting Management & General Alumni Relations more expensive. T HE CONSOR T IUM • 2013 ANNUAL REPOR T Finance & Administration 9 Surplus funds can be directed towards either bolstering the organization’s net asset base or remitted to member schools. After review by the Board of Trustees the current asset base was deemed adequate and The Consortium has targeted to operate at a breakeven level. Consistent with this objective, FY2013 results were slightly positive and surplus funds were redirected to member schools. CONSORTIUM SURPLUS & DISTRIBUTIONS $ THOUSANDS 1,600 1,200 800 400 0 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 The net asset formula adds the current year’s surplus to the prior year’s base, so by definition breaking even will keep net assets flat. The $2.7 million has been judged adequate to support current operations. Even though the total amount was essentially unchanged, the total includes the value of our new office building partially offset by a long term mortgage note payable. In FY2013 The Consortium, capping a dynamic five year period, enrolled 395 students, its largest class ever. Our recruiting process continues to evolve. The in-person MAPS (MBA Application Preparation Seminar) calendar is now exclusively midweek, and often tied to general market events such as the World MBA Tour. This makes school travel more efficient and allows us to promote our own event in the same city. The calendar is also year around, with spring webinars focusing on longer range planning CONSORTIUM APPLICANTS & STUDENTS and the fall emphasizing meeting the looming 1,200 600 800 400 400 200 0 2008 2009 2009 2010 Applicants 2010 2011 2011 2012 2012 2013 Students 0 deadlines. In addition to recruiting current year applicants we have also allocated resources towards pipeline development. We regularly present at high value events such as the National Society of Black Engineers and an Atlanta University Center event focusing on HBCUs is now a fixture on the Fall calendar. On the west coast, Peter Aranda has been the keynote speaker at the Riordan Conference. With the OP career tracks assuming a more prominent role, the location is no longer solely dependent on the home city of the lead partner. This allows for a planning horizon that is more appropriate to a 1,000 person event. In addition to Austin in 2014 we have booked our first ever visit to Phoenix in 2015 and will be back in St. Louis celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2016. The conference app continued to be an important tool and was downloaded 1,248 times — 480 on iOS devices, 726 on android devices, and 42 web views. We are also using our eShow registration system for additional functions, such as booth registrations, and its reporting capability allowed for smarter decision making around our pricing policy. The Consortium’s web presence changed dramatically in 2013. Three disparate sites were consolidated into one, www.cgsm.org. The look and feel which had grown cluttered over time was given a sleeker, more contemporary look.
