National Park Hoge Kempen
The “National Park Hoge Kempen” is the first National
Park at Flanders. This natural reserve, covering more
than
5700 ha, is characterized by woods and heath.
It’s a lovely place to take a walk, to ride a bicycle or a
horse. Admission to the park is free. It’s best to start
at 1 of the 5 gateways, where you can (mostly) find an
information kiosk as well as parking space, a cafeteria
and
addition attractions.
For more info: www.nationaalpark.be
Welcome
Limburg enjoys the reputation of being the leafiest
province in Flanders. One of the highlights is without a
shadow of a doubt the Hoge Kempen National Park. This
5,700 ha natural area covers the municipalities of DilsenStokkem, Maasmechelen, Zutendaal, Lanaken, Genk and
As. Visitors have the opportunity to wander here for hours through the woods and the
purple heath, along the lakes or on the high peaks commanding endless views.
There are five Gateways to guide you in the National Park. The visitors’ reception centre
helps you to explore the surrounding area. There is nothing as pleasant as taking a walk
to enjoy the outdoors. 200 km of signposted paths await your arrival. Those keen on an
even more exciting trip can set off in the company of a ranger. Cyclists and horse riders
are also welcome to discover what the region has to offer.
And they are bound to be spoiled for choice: over 7,000 species of flora and fauna have
been identified. The National Park is notable for its stones of all shapes, colours, sizes
and weight. They also constitute the common thread running through the history of the
National Park. You will certainly recognise them during your visit.
Have fun!
Nature on top!
Located in the highest part of the Kempen region (50-100 metres high), the Hoge
Kempen National Park is made up of debris the River Meuse carried from the Ardennes
during the last ice ages. Another claim to fame: it is the sole Flemish region whose soil is
entirely composed of pebbles.
The furrows created as a result of the gravel mining
activities and the underlying quart sand combine with
these pebbles to produce the only 'open-air geological
museum' in the Benelux countries. The River Meuse has
hollowed out a 60 m deep valley towards the east, so the
region boasts a wealth of landforms.
With the arrival of the first settlements the virgin forest
were cut down to make way for fields.
The exhausted fields were abandoned and became covered with heath, which has been a
component of the local rural economy for centuries. The heath serves as a habitat for
bird species typically found in this environment, such as curlews, woodlarks and
nightjars. Heath hazel, bell heather and red bell heather cover hundreds of hectares of
lands with a purple carpet in August and
September.
Apart from dry heath with the continental dunes
and damp heath with peat bogs and fens, the Hoge
Kempen National Park primarily consists of coniferous forests, which were originally
planted to cater for the demand for timber supports for coalmines but were gradually
turned into more natural forests.
Thanks to the south-oriented slopes and the huge variety of biotopes the Hoge Kempen
environment is much appreciated by thermophilic insects, such as the blue-winged
grasshopper and the old world swallowtail.
The inoffensive grass snake feels at home in the sunniest spots, so it, along with the
moor frog, the natter jack toad and the viviparous lizard, is the cause of the Hoge
Kempen's reputation as a key Flemish area for amphibians and reptiles. A large
population of deer takes shelter in the wooded stretches surrounding the open heath.
It also inhabited by remarkable birds of prey, such as the goshawk.
These rich nature resources are managed by the Nature and Forest
Agency (Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos). The wealth of resources
would soon deteriorate if it were not for the Agency's activities. The
heath is offered every chance of thriving as a result of various
operations such as mowing the old heath in situ, cutting any excessive
spread of weeds and cutting down trees in situ. Spreading out these
operations in space and in time helps to produce a huge variety of
biotopes. Targeted lopping and controlling exotic species (such as the
black cherry) ensure the forests are managed on a more
environmentally friendly basis. Open spaces and more varied fringes are created to
bring more light into the rather dark and unappealing coniferous plantations.

Your attention please!
More and more people feel themselves drawn towards the ever-decreasing natural
resources. And if it sometimes seems as if you are completely alone on the heath or in
the forest, you have to remember that thousands of people have had and will have the
same sensation. This is why the Nature and Forest Agency, as manager, asks you to
comply with one or two regulations.
Discovering the Park via the Gateways …
Choose one of the five Gateways as the ideal place to begin a visit to the National Park.
Each one boasts an information point, a car park, a cafeteria and various attractions.
It is planned to establish a Main Gateway in Eisden-Lanklaar (Maasmechelen/DilsenStokkem) in a few years time. In the meantime, it is well worth going out of your way to
visit Dilsen-Stokkem.
(p.14-53)
Walking, riding or cycling …
Which ever system you choose to discover the Park (walking, horse riding or by bike),
you can be sure the National Park caters for all tastes.
Each Gateway can be the starting point for a 3-14 km loop-like tour. There is also a longdistance (72 km) tour in and around the National Park. (p. 70-79)
Use the cycling interchange network to discover the National Park and the surrounding
area by bicycle. Bicycle hire facilities are available at three Gateways.
(p. 80-83)
Horses and carts are welcome on the National Park's new horse riding and pedestrian
network, which is linked to the Limburg Kempen network. (p. 84-89)
Events are staged at various sites throughout the year. We do our best to minimise any
inconvenience this make cause to individual tourists. Up-to-date information is available
at the following address: www.nationaalpark.be.
Rangers await your visit!
If you are keen on discovering an unforgettable experience the Hoge Kempen National
Park rangers will be only too delighted to accompany you. Set off with one of these
officials, and be prepared for a surprise.
There are two ways to take part in a ranger activity:
• Participating in an activity featured on the calendar. No need to reserve for this, you
simply pay a small participation charge.
• Booking a ranger for your friends, your family, you colleagues, … you may then
choose the type of activity, the place, the time, ….
How to get there?
The Kempen and Maasland Landscape cycle path network can be used to reach the
National Park by bicycle, perfectly safely and within a short space of time. (p. 80-83)
The Hoge Kempen National Park can be quickly reached by car from the E314 via the 32
or 33 exit, to reach one of the Gateways, where you may start the visit. Take a map from
the leaflet display stand.
If you prefer to travel by train pay a visit to www.nmbs.be for the timetable of trains
stopping at Genk station, from which you can continue your journey thanks to De Lijn
bus service.
Accommodation
You may think one day is too short to discover the Hoge Kempen National Park and the
surrounding area. So why not spend the night in a hotel, a bed and breakfast or on a
camp site and discover Limburg-style hospitality? For details of accommodation in
Limburg, pay a visit to www.toerismelimburg.be.
An overview of accommodation in the National Park is featured on pages 92-96.
Here you can stay close to the National Park and also count on receiving all the
information you need: they all sell a comprehensive selection of National Park walking
guides, distribute the visitors guides, are happy to offer you one or two suggestions and
some also often provide some special deals.
Take a piece of the National Park home with you!
The range of items on offer from the National Park is just perfect if you are looking for a
nice souvenir of your visit to the National Park or merely on the look-out for an original
gift from the region.
Produced in the most environmentally-friendly way possible, these gifts have been
carefully selected for your delectation. Examples of its ecological credentials is the
decision for the wood to be sourced from sustainably managed forests, while the
pebbles are firestones (silex) from the Hoge Kempen National Park, worked by local
craftspeople. The potter, too, is from the region. Be sure to taste the National Park cake
available from local operators inside and around the National Park. This crunchy little
hazel-nut flavoured delicacy with a hint of Limburg honey is made in Limburg (B) with
the finest ingredients.
The National Park photo album will help you to relive your visit. Over 100 photos to set
you dreaming about this splendid national area. A sight for sore eyes!
When you buy these items you can also pat yourself on the back for lending support to
the National Park! The proceeds from the sales are ploughed back into the nature park,
by way of maintaining footpaths and riding tracks, for example.
See page 97 for an overview of retail outlets where the National Park gifts are on sale.
Questions or suggestions?
The Flemish authorities have assigned the task of coordinating the Hoge Kempen
National Park to the non-profit-making body the Regional Kempen and Meuse Region
Landscape, which has set up a project office towards this end. This is the place to ask any
questions you may have and make any comments about the Hoge Kempen National
Park.

The National Park is the outcome of a successful partnership between several entities.
Its development is a constant concern of the Flemish Authorities, Limburg Province, the
relevant municipalities, nature associations, business operators and other partners. It is
a never-ending task seeing to the upkeep of the region, enhancing the infrastructure and
recreational facilities, preventing any undesirable activities, ….
The park rangers certainly have their work cut out for them …
The National Park's infrastructure is managed according to high standards thanks to the
efforts of the park rangers, a team of employees from the socio-economic company De
Winning. They are there day after day to ensure you can visit the National Park in the
best possible circumstances.
A project enjoying the support of LSM - Limburg Provisional Administration.
Gateway Kattevennen
Gateway Kattevennen at Genk is easily accessible by car
or by train/bus. There is a reception area, a shop and a
cafeteria. You can learn about stars and planets at the
Europlanetarium. From here you can take a walk, ride a
bike or a horse.
For more info: www.nationaalpark.be
Kattevennen, a Gateway with a view of space, with the
Europlanetarium as the main attraction. It did not take long to
find a theme for this National Park Gateway: macro-cosmos!
This is where you can learn everything about the earth, its
origins, its place in the universe, the macro-cosmos, ….
The Kattevennen Visitor Reception Centre offers a whole
range of information about the National Park and the activities
of this Gateway.
NEW
The Cosmodrome at the Kattevennen Gateway is new. The Cosmodrome houses a
digital screening system, while the inside comprises nothing but screens. As well as films
about astronomy this is where films will also be shown about nature, culture, pop music
– the possibilities are endless.
The Europlanetarium provides an opportunity to
become acquainted with space. This is one of Flanders'
five active observatories were each presentation allows
visitors to make a leap in time and in space.
Hikers are welcome as well! The Planet Path is an openair opportunity to brush up your knowledge about out
solar system. The 1.4 km long path through the
Kattevennen woods is a kind of scale model of our solar
system: every metre in fact represents 4 billion metres! The 11 information boards
teach you more about the planets in our solar system.
Apart from the Planet Path, visitors can also take a pleasant educational stroll along the
Stone Path. Located near to the Visitors Centre, the Stone Path represents 500 million
years of the earth's history, with 30 or so different stones. They reflect the various
geological stages in the complex history of the
birth of the Belgian and Limburg subsoil.
National Park tours starting from Kattevennen
enable you to discover the wide pine forests.
Crossing Heempark they provide an ideal
connection between the centre of Genk and the
National Park. You may choose between 3 signposted tours: 5, 7 or 10 km. See page 74
for further details.
Located at intersection 30, Kattevennen is also very easily reached by cyclists. Bicycles
are also available for hire there.
Riders and teamsters are also welcome here. Appropriate parking facilities are
available. Thanks to the presence of a horse riding
school with a riding club this is an ideal starting point
for discovering the National Park's brand-new riding
network.
Kattevennen also offers opportunities for miniature golf, pony riding, trips in a covered
wagon, skiing,….

Gateway Station As
At the Gateway Station As you can catch an ancient train
to travel through the Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen.
During this ride you will learn more about the mining history.
Moreover this is an ideal place to start a bicycle ride
through the National Park and/or Maasland.
For more information: www.nationaalpark.be
Limburg's mining past plays a key role here. The old As Station
is of central importance in this respect. The station building
dates back to 1878. The station was
subsequently linked to Eisden, thus
acquiring the status of the starting point for
trains carrying minors. All the pits were
connected by a huge 'Coal Track' at the time.
When the coalmining activities were halted,
the Genk-Eisden line stopped being used for carrying passengers and
goods. It was decided in 1996 that the station building and
surrounding area should be protected as a monument and restored.
The smaller visitors reception centre is now located here. A
restored train is used to provide information about the National
Park and the As Station Gateway.
The 31-meter high lookout tower with a view of the Hoge
Kempen National Park is a replica of the drilling rig, which André
Dumont used to discover Limburg coal in as back in 1901. The
lookout tower can be accessed for free up to 25 metres. This
offers a splendid panoramic vista of the station site and the
National Park.
The Kolenspoor non-profit-making body operates the Waterschei –
As – Eisden railway line for tourist purposes with old historical
trains. The train runs according to a fixed schedule. Daily
opportunities for groups to book train trips /tailor-made options.
They consult to choose the starting time, the journey the type of
carriage, the catering formula and/or a guided tour/visit to one of
the places of interest along the way.
The miniature train is a scale train which travels along the 1,300m light railway track,
takes you along the lookout tower, makes a stop in the Driebankenbos and makes a
connection with the
National Park
footpaths, the geological
wall and the
As fun and sports-oriented
forest.
Starting from As station,
located along
the intersection 41, you can
set off on a
bicycle tour along and
through the
National Park, the blue
Meuse valley
or the Bosbeek valley.
If you forget your bike
there is no
need to worry, because a
bicycle hire
facility is available. Or you
can opt for a
rail bike or a rail track vehicle. You will then be able to pedal along the old mining
railway track from As station, via the National Park, and up to Eisden station.
The As Station walking area features 10 loop-like tours three of which start at the As
Station Gateway. The old forests, drives and farms evoke the region's rich mining past.
You may also become acquainted with the Hoge Kempen's typical heath landscape.
Have a bite to eat in the As Station and quench your thirst in the restored station
building or on the platform when the weather is fine.
If you want to extend your visit a bit why not try out the unique accommodation in an
authentic 1951 night train?

Gateway Mechelse Heide
At Mechelse Heide you can discover the most beautiful
nature spots, with purple flowering heat as highlight in the
months of August-September. Take a long or a short walk
and make your excursion more exciting in the company
of a Ranger.
For more information: www.nationaalpark.be
Mechelse Heide is synonymous with walks: walks through
the forest and heath, enjoy huge vistas, … unlike the other
Gateways there is no reception centre here. Here, nature
speaks for itself and that says enough!
The refuge provides all the information you need to make a
success of your visit to the Mechelse Heide: details about
bicycle tours, a site map, …
Pay a visit to the cafeteria ’t Salamanderke before or after
your tour to enjoy a small cup of coffee or a piece of fruit pie,
which is most welcome, don't you agree?
This Gateway is the starting point for no less than 7 tours. The tours to the north of this
starting point lead through the Mechelse Bos, which forms an entity with the
Lanklaarderbos (As Station walking area). The two areas are divided by the old AsEisden railway line (see p. 24). The former tiny Eisden station, now the Café de Statie,
provides an opportunity to take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee or other tasty items.
The southern tours lead to the highest points of the Hoge Kempen, where you can see as
far as Germany. The climbing is a bit steep in places. But you will be richly rewarded for
your efforts with a view over the fines heath areas in the Hoge Kempen. The heath turns
the landscape into a purple haze in August and September.
Impressed and eager for more? Move down to the Kikbeekbron.
This 300 ha section of the National Park comprises an older sand and
gravel quarry, heath and abandoned fields. Nature has made a
successful comeback here in recent years. Norwegian Fjord horses
are to found here in a semi-wild state grazing on the heath. The lake
water level was raised by 2.5 m during the 2004-2005 period, with
impressive results.
The earth removal operations have also provided an insight into the birth of our earth.
The geological working group LIKONA has created a geological garden here.
The perfect starting point for a tour through the Kikbeekbron is the Camping
Kikmolen. If you are feeling tired or famished, stop off at the cafeteria Aen ’t Venne for
refreshments. You may also come here with your tent or caravan.
A great deal of care is obviously lavished on this nature park. Skilful management is
required to prevent it shrinking in size and its quality going into a rapid decline. Nature
management in the National Park is the responsibility of the Nature and Forests
Agency (Flemish Authorities ). Thanks to its expert knowledge, it can get involved, for
example in moistening an area by developing dams, digging ponds and eliminating any
parasitic plants that are spreading, ….
The main concern in Mechelse Heide is to maintain a varied heath. Old heath is
eliminated to offer a chance for new plants to get started. Unfortunately, these
operations often strike visitors as disastrous but it has to be realised that afterwards,
the natural resources will thrive and grow like never before.
Visitors may also help to protect this wildlife. And you know how? First of all by
complying with the Regulations drawn up by the manager. Rather than being designed
to curb your freedom, these rules are designed to allow the wildlife to flourish in
complete freedom.
Those keen on giving a little extra something to their tour should set off with a ranger!
Depending upon your areas of interest, you may opt for a nature walk, a gourmet tour, a
crash course in broom binding,…
You are bound to find something to your taste. Go quickly to page 54-69.
Close to the Mechelse Heide Gateway is the Fabiola Holiday House. Low-impact
recreation is the focal point of this modern holiday centre for children and young people,
with a special focus on children with a disability. This is the ideal 'suitably adapted'
starting point towards other tourist attractions in the surrounding area. Anybody may
gather here as part of a group. The new development in 2009 comes in the shape of the
care apartments ‘’t Mechels Bos’. These 10 holiday apartments (6 people per apartment)
are designed for families with a disabled child or a child suffering from a chronic illness
For more detailed information about opportunities for tourists in the Hoge Kempen
National Park, you may also get in touch with Toerisme Maasmechelen, a few
kilometres further on, near to the old Eisden coal mine and Maasmechelen Village. In
addition to all kinds of useful information about the region, you will also discover an
interactive space here (with free audio guide) and a shop featuring regional produce.

gate tower you can enjoy a splendid view of
the Pietersheim site and estate. Add a little
extra to your visit and book a guide. Various
educational tools have also been developed for
schools (starting in the 2010-2011 school
year).
For the very young the children's farm is entertainment guaranteed. Take a pleasant
stroll among the many farm animals and do not be frightened of Libelle, the huge
draught horse. Travel in a cart with Libelle, who will take you to the most beautiful spots
on the estate (solely for groups - by reservation only). A must-see visit is the House of
Lotte & Giel, a new stable for animals with over 20 different indigenous races of chicken
and rabbits. Colourful information boards and interactive games offer further
information about the chickens and rabbits. Schools may take part in these naturerelated farm activities. Make biscuits, crisps and learn a bit more about insects … these
are just a sample of the myriad activities for children in the 5-14 age group. Children can
count on receiving effective guidance about the miracles of nature.
When you have had enough of animals, step into the refurbished playground!
Some games are adapted for children with a disability.
Thanks to the path crossing the playground, several games are accessible to children in
wheelchairs. When the weather is warm, you can have some fun splashing about in the
water games.
You can also follow the new Elf Path.
Kwip will show the way! The trail
invites children to take part in
enjoyable nature-related games …
You can also recharge your batteries
in the children's farm cafeteria: a
Limburg fruit pie and a nice cup of
coffee is waiting for you on the terrace
(along the playground). A la carte
eating or a little snack is also
available. Or you may prefer the
princely setting of the ‘Castle Pietersheim’. Previously inhabited by Prince Xavier de
Merode the splendid castle is now a café, restaurant and hotel. From the terrace you can
enjoy a fine view of the front part of the estate. The hotel boasts 15 princely rooms.
Groups comprising 20 to 68 people may easily be housed in the accommodation
centre.
If you prefer to be alone use the Pietersheim Gateway from which 4 signposted tours
begin (4, 5, 9, 13 km). The shortest tour enables you to discover the castle estate, while
the other ones guide you towards the National Park. (p. 77)

Dilsen-Stokkem
In addition to the current five gateways, a main gateway
is planned for Eisden-Lanklaar (Maasmechelen/DilsenStokkem). Although the implementation of the main
gateway
will still take several years, Dilsen-Stokkem is already
an excellent starting point for a visit to the gateways at As
and Maasmechelen. In addition, the cable bridge over the
Zuid-Willemsvaart is literally a bridge between the Hoge
Kempen and the Maas Valley, and is certainly worth a visit!
Between the Meuse Valley and the Hoge Kempen
Dilsen-Stokkem is the location of a significant section of the
main Gateway to the Hoge Kempen National Park. The
work has yet to get underway, but this municipality is a
splendid starting point towards the As and Maasmechelen
Gateways. While the suspended bridge over the ZuidWillemsvaart literally forges a bridge between the Hoge
Kempen and the Meuse Valley.
To the east of Hoge Kempen, from Maastricht until after Maaseik, is the location of the
Meuse Valley with its picturesque villages, castles and wildlife along a gravel river, the
only one in Flanders and the Netherlands. This is the whereabouts of the ‘Rivierpark
Maasvallei’. To find out more about the Meuse Valley and its inhabitants, head for the
Maascentrum De Wissen, which is only a few kilometres from the National Park.
If you prefer to the stick to the real Hoge Kempen a must-visit destination is t’Château
Litzberg’. Only the farm is still standing (a combination of café and restaurant) but the
woods around there exude a special atmosphere. This catering establishment, halfway
between As and Dilsen, is the starting point for several splendid walks.
Another must-see destination is the ‘Domein De Maasvallei’. Do not be fooled by the
name, because this is an authentic piece of the Hoge Kempen, on the edge of the National
Park, featuring a vey special landscape comprising spoil heaps from the old Eisden mine
(Maasmechelen) close by. You have to pay to visit this 200 ha site but it is certainly
worth the trip.
Maascentrum De Wissen
At the braid museum you can attend demonstrations on how willow twigs are used to
make all sorts of things. At the Maascentrum you will learn all about life in, at and
around the river.

Walking
The National Park offers excellent walking
opportunities.
From the 5 gateways on you can embark on a 3 up to
15 km long, loop shaped walk. These walks are
signposted
and (generally) walking maps are available at the
gateway
or at your lodgings. Adventurers can embark on a
long
distance walk of no les than 72 km. At each gateway
there
is parking, a cafeteria and a toilet.
For more information: www.nationaalpark.be
Going on foot will do you good
Hikers will have something to celebrate in the Hoge
Kempen National Park. No less than 36 loop-like
tours, varying between 3 and 14 km, to lead you
through the finest locations in and around the Hoge
Kempen National Park.
It is best to start at one of the five Gateways. Here is
where you find the appropriate information,
extensive parking facilities are provided, you can have a bite to eat or have a drink, ….
You can also start off from the entrances. Their infrastructure is fairly limited. Ideal for a
follow-up visit.!
The trail loops can be followed in both directions. The loops can be identified by a colour
and a silhouette. They are repeated all along the trail on wooden posts so you cannot get
lost. Some of the loops follow each other in parallel for a certain time. The posts feature
various symbols, so you can easily switch from one loop to another. The distances for a
loop are always shown on the starting board and on the map.
A walking guide is strongly recommended
This provides comprehensive information about the area and you are sure to be able to
get your bearings at all times. This is most helpful when you want to transfer to another
loop halfway. A map costs €2, and the money is reinvested in the development of the
region.
These maps are on sale at the local VVV tourist offices.
Apart from these time-honoured tours, some of the Gateways offer theme-specific tours,
such as the Planet Path (Kattevennen), the Stone Path (Kattevennen), the Barefoot Path
(Lieteberg) and the Elf Path (Pietersheim).
Keen on a challenge?
The long-distance tour is highly recommended. Covering 72 kilometres inside and
around the Hoge Kempen National Park this tour links the five Gateways. It is
best for the tour to begin at one of these Gateways. The route is signposted in
the field with the figure of the National Park's 'tiny paw'. The topographic map
for this tour costs €5 and is on sale at the local VVV tourist offices
Looking for accommodations for a several-day tour?
Look at www.nationaalpark.be for a list of accommodations and arrangements in the
vicinity of your tour.
Hoge Kempen National Park touring box:
This handy storage box features five maps of tours to be discovered in the Hoge Kempen
National Park. Impossible to miss a single patch of ground!
Costing €10 the box can be ordered through www.nationaalpark.be or from local VVV
tourist offices.
Five very different walking areas
The five Gateways, each with its own distinctive character, is the perfect starting point
for your voyage of discovery on foot. Below is a description of each walking area, what
there is to discover there, and an overview of the various trails, plus a list of starting
points. You will notice that at the starting points, near to the Gateways, references are
also made to entrance points, which differ from the Gateways in being smaller starting
points with limited parking and information facilities.
Walking area Kattevennen
The tours starting from Kattevennen provide a perfect link between the centre of
Genk and the National Park. The huge pine forests provide opportunities for an
athletic tour. A most instructive tour, as a result of being located near to the
Heempark, the Sundials in the Molenvijverpark, the Planet Path and the Stone
Path. All the tours are flat. Strolling along a boardwalk, opting for the ecoveloduct (designed not only for functional and recreational bicycle traffic but also
for hikers, horse riders and animals) - everything is possible.

Walking area Mechelse Heide
It is no coincidence that the Mechelse Heide is the preeminent walking area. The
climbing is a bit steep in places. But you will be richly rewarded for your efforts
with splendid views. Also pay a visit to the magnificent Hoge Kempen heath
areas. All the tours are inside the National Park.

Walking area Station As
The tours starting from the As Station are also worth the trouble:
The huge stretches of heath land of yesteryear have been replaced by huge pine
forests or large fields but the typical health landscape can still be discovered is
certain charming locations, such as Bosheide. The tours are partly in the National
Park but interesting areas are also waiting to be discovered outside the Park.

Walking area Pietersheim
The Pietersheim starting point leads visitors to the dense pine forests, avenues of
old beech trees and the Pietersembos extension. A bit further on and you reach
the admirable areas in the Valley of Zijpbeek and Neerharerheide. Enjoy the
peaceful atmosphere and the open space in one of the finest and calmest spots in
the National Park. Nearly all the tours cross the National Park and you sometimes
come across steep climbs. Some of the trails in the Valley of Zijpbeek will be
slightly changed in 2010. The loop-like tours will remain accessible during the
works.

Walking area Lieteberg
Most of the tours starting from Lieteberg are located outside the National Park
but they do enable visitors to become acquainted with one or two charming
nature areas. The heaths have often been replaced by coniferous forests but the
Bezoensberg still has one or two while the Hesselsberg has the Hoge Kempen's
second largest juniper bush.

Horse riding
Thanks to the horse trekking route maps you can easily
map out your horse or horse wagon ride in and around
the National Park.
Signs along the road will guide you on your trip. The
horse trekking route maps are (mostly) available at
the
gateways or at your local Tourist Offices.
For more information: www.nationaalpark.be
Discover the National Park on horseback
You can also explore the Hoge Kempen on horseback
over a network of 140 kilometres of paths for horses
and carriages. The extensive forest and natural zones
as well as the fact that the Hoge Kempen National Park
is located around a network make it a place to be for
horse lovers. Over 85% of the trails are unpaved once.
A tailored network
The network consists of an intersection system, which
allows you to map out your personal route. You are
directed by the markings on wood poles (signposted in
two directions) along the route. Starting from the
existing riding stables in the region, you can start
tours of several days, a one-day trip or a half-day trip.
You will find resting places where you can take a quick break and/or spend the night
along your route.
A route map is available for the Hoge Kempen horse and carriage network. It
describes the various trails as well as the half-day and day tours, and it also
provides suggestions for overnight stays and restaurants along your route. Use
the route map to plan your trip ahead. Available for €5 at the tourist
information offices in Hoge Kempen, the gateways of the Hoge Kempen
National Park and all starting and resting points along the network.
Looking for the prettiest spots in the Hoge Kempen?
We’d love to help you map out your route. A must : “Vierlandsheren” tour. You will find
more suggestions for horse and carriage rids on the rider map Nationaal Park Hoge
Kempen.
“Vierlandsheren” - tour
The “Vierlandsheren” – tour takes you straight through the forests of the princes of
Merode. You explore the south part of the Nationaal Park Hoge Kempen with its
extended forests like Pietersembos and Langenberg. A number of slopes on the
Kempens Plateau are a real challenge. You pass along „Vierlandsherenpunt“ where you
will learn more about the past of the region. Moreover it is the ideal spot for a picnic
and a connection point in a green surrounding. A large variety of sandy tracks, broadleaved and pine frosts, lakes and ponds,... waiting to be discovered by you. Enjoyable
surroundings.
• Distance 20.8 km
• Characteristics: Mainly forests / slopes
• Startingpoint: Ter Biessen, Begijnenbos 11,
3620 Lanaken, www.terbiessen.be
• Intersections:
• Resting spots:
- Pietersheim Gateway: connection point +
catering
- Vierlandsherenpunt: picnic bench in the open +
connection point (on the road)
- Heiwijck: picnic bench in the open +
connection point (at approx. 1,2 km from the
track, between intersections 89 and 84).
- Camping Kikmolen: connection point + catering
(at approx. 1.4 km from the track)
• Careful:
- During the winter months, tracks may be
rather swampy. Especially around
Pietersembos, a natural humid forest area.
- Between he intersections 91 and 92 you have a
choice between 2 tracks.
- Public roads to be crossed are of local
importance.
The Hoge Kempen network links up with the horse
and carriage network Limburgse Kempen. The
route map, a publication from Tourism Limburg,
includes no less than 550 km of riding tracks
(National Park Hoge Kempen horse and carriage network included). This map is
available for 6 Euro at the tourist information offices of North Limburg.
Accessibility
The network is accessible to horses and carriages. Barriers on forest roads are equipped
with an interlock system. Careful, the interlock system is only accessible for two-in
hand- and not for four-in-hand carriages.
In winter months, certain tracks may be swampy. Given the natural challenges of these
terrains (slopes, shifting sands, …) carriage drivers are required to have some
experience.
We tried to avoid it as much as possible, yet it cannot be fully excluded: sometimes the
network crosses the hiking and/or cycling. Please give priority to hikers and bikers, and
remember: not everyone is comfortable around horses.
On the road with a ranger!
On the road with a ranger is also possible on horseback or in a carriage! A one-day trip
to discover the most beautiful spots of the National Park while a ranger will fill you in
with all kinds of petty facts. More info: see page 68.
Problems?
Due to forest exploitation, agricultural use,.. quality of the tracks cannot be warranted
at all time. An overview of roads in bad condition can be found at
www.nationaalpark.be. We try to repair a number of roads each year.
Problems on the road, a signpost out of alignment, a missing signposts ? Please notify
