AIA FLORIDA CONVENTION AND TRADE SHOW July 21-24, 2016 | The Breakers Palm Beach IDEAS GROW HERE 1 Cultivating the Future from the Past and Present... Martin Diaz-Yabor, FAIA AIA Florida 2016 President Throughout the year, I have encouraged my fellow AIA Florida members to focus on the theme of “Cultivating the Future from the Past and the Present.” The past serves as our foundation, the present as our ability to innovate and the future as our destination. With that spirit in mind, as architects we must be leaders for our communities and our profession. We, as AIA Florida, must come together as a collective and inclusive profession. For the 2016 Convention and Trade Show, we are back at The Breakers Palm Beach. The Convention Committee, led by committee chair Lourdes Solera, FAIA, has put together a strong and exciting program. This year we will explore critical topics such as livable communities, public health, economic growth opportunities, sea level rise and many other essential topics that deal with practice, codes, design and leadership; not to mention the vast array of events, tours, parties and our annual Trade Show. This year’s kickoff speaker is the nationally renowned and highly sought after expert on sea level rise, John Englander. Mr. Englander is an oceanographer, consultant and expert on sea level rise and ocean patterns. He is also the author of a best seller book called; High Tide On Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis, which explains the science behind the sea level rise. During convention we will also be joined by three dynamic keynote speakers. On Friday, AIA First Vice President, Tom Vonier, FAIA will explore topics pertaining to international practice. On Saturday, Chris Downey, AIA will share with us his experiences as an architect before and after unexpectedly losing sight in 2008, followed by Joe Minicozzi, AICP who will present tactics to be used for successful communication of public policies that shape the built environment. We will continue to engage emerging professionals through learning sessions, networking and mentoring events throughout the weekend. We want to make sure that the future of our profession is secured. I encourage all associates and newly licensed architects to engage, network and participate in our convention. These are exciting times for AIA Florida. We have repositioned the AIA Florida Board by making it leaner and more efficient, created a “Strategic Council” that serves as an advisory committee to the board, explored ways of becoming more diverse and inclusive and gathered the largest class of young talented members of our profession to serve in state leadership positions. The Breakers in Palm Beach is a splendid venue, with its rich history and beautiful surroundings. Join us for a convention full of fun, learning and camaraderie. I look forward to seeing you all at the AIA Florida Annual Convention July 21-24, 2016! Martin Diaz-Yabor, FAIA 2 SPEAKERS Kickoff Speaker John Englander An oceanographer, consultant and sea level rise expert, John Englander is the author of the bestselling book, High Tide On Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis. Englander clearly explains the science behind sea level rise, the impending devastating financial impacts and the “intelligent adaptation” that all businesses and coastal communities must consider today. Keynote Speakers Tom Vonier, FAIA Working from bases in both Paris and Washington, D.C., Tom Vonier, FAIA supports clients with global industrial operations in high-threat environments while simultaneously serving as First Vice President of the AIA. As a licensed architect and board-certified security professional, Tom specialzes in security planning and design. With projects throughout Africa, the former Soviet Union, East Asia, the Middle East and Europe, his work focuses on cost-effective solutions grounded in fact-based vulnerability assessments. Chris Downey, AIA With 20 years of architectural experience before unexpectedly losing all sight in 2008, Chris Downey now leverages his new disability as a unique strength. Specializing in projects rooted in universal design that are specific to or challenging for people who are blind or visually impaired, he designs environments that are accessible with particular care and focus on the non-visual experience. Joe Minicozzi, AICP Joe Minicozzi is the principal of Urban3, a consulting firm created by Asheville real estate developer, Public Interest Projects. Urban3’s work in pioneering geo-spatial representation of economic productivity has prompted a paradigm shift in understanding the economic potency of urbanism and the value of well-designed cities. Their studies for municipalities across the United States and Canada have affected the reevaluation of public policy and a broader understanding of market dynamics created by tax policy. 3 SCHEDULE OF EVENTS Thursday, July 21 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Registration Desk Open 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM Board Meeting/Annual Meeting 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM Lunch-Attendees on their Own 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM Session A: Kickoff - John Englander 2:50 PM - 3:50 PM Session B: Vinyl Fenestration Session C: Citizen Architects- Building Communities 4:10 PM - 5:10 PM Session D: Enhance Your Next Multifamily Project With Natural Gas Session E: Architects as Developers- The Dark Art of Small Projects 5:30 PM -7:00 PM President’s Reception 7:15 PM - 9:30 PM CGI Drinks and Dessert Reception 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM Fellows Dinner (invitation only) Friday, July 22 7:00 AM - 1:00 PM 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM 8:15 AM - 9:15 AM 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM 9:35 AM - 10:35 AM 10:50 AM - 11:50 AM 12:50 PM - 1:50 PM 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM 3:00 PM - 6:30 PM 6:45 PM - 7:45 PM 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM CGI Golf Tournament Continental Breakfast Session F: Designing from East to West Session G: Part 2: Sketchup MAC/ Windows “Yes And” Integration in a Digital World Tour - Masonry Plant / Lunch Session H: Maya to Modern Session I: Active Design Miami Session J: Culture and Content Session K: Legal Considerations for the Business of Architecture Session L: Serendipity in Architecture is a Wonderful Thing!
