oastal Sediments ‘15 is devoted to promoting an interdisciplinary exchange of stateof-the-art knowledge among researchers
in the fields of coastal engineering, geology,
oceanography, and related disciplines, with the
theme of “Understanding and Working with Nature.”

he Proceedings of the Coastal Sediments ’15
is dedicated to our dear friend, colleague
and mentor, Dr. Robert G. Dean (19302015). Dr. Dean was a member of the National
Academy of Engineering, a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers
(ASCE), an ASCE Diplomate in Coastal Engineering, the Coastal Award winner at Coastal Sediments ‘11, and the loving father of our conference co-chair, Julie Dean Rosati. Dr. Dean’s
tremendous contributions to coastal science and
engineering have and continue to inspire us to
be curious about the coast and find new solutions to complicated coastal problems. Throughout more than 50 years of teaching at the University of Florida, University of Delaware, University
of Washington, and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, Dr. Dean mentored numerous students who are now leading researchers and practitioners in the fields of coastal engineering and
science. It is with great honor and privilege that
we dedicate these CS15 volumes in his memory.

The theme of the conference is highlighted by
the two keynote addresses delivered by Dr. Robert Nicholls
(University of Southampton,
United Kingdom) and Dr. J. A.
Roelvink (UNESCO-IHE Institute
for Water Education, the Netherlands). Dr. Nicholls’ keynote
is entitled “Coastal Evolution
and Human-Induced Sea-Level NICHOLLS
Rise: History and Prognosis.” Dr.
Roelvink’s keynote is entitled
“Addressing Local and Global
Sediment Imbalances: Coastal
Sediments as Rare Minerals.”
The two keynote addresses are
followed by nearly 260 professional presentations in four

Dr. Marcel Stive of the Delft University of Technology will receive the 2015
Coastal Award at the Conference Awards Luncheon on May

Morning lectures will cover recent theoretical advances
and future research needs in coastal sediment dynamics,
modeling guidelines for long-term and short-term processbased model applications, and a case study regarding the
technical aspects of modeling of the sand engine. The
afternoon will be a “hands-on” Delft3D and XBeach modeling workshop.
Statistical Approaches to Analyze
the Climate Variability of Coastal Flooding
and Erosion Hazards
The estimation of coastal flooding and erosion risks in a
changing climate is a challenge, requiring a combination of
long-term hindcast and climatic data bases, hydrodynamic
and morphodynamic models, and mathematical and
statistical algorithms. In this full day short course, recent
advances and different cutting-edge methods and models
to help to address the different time scales of multivariate
marine climate will be shown. The seasonal-to-interannual
variability will be analyzed using a combination of timedependent extreme value models as well as data mining
tools that synthesize the high complexity of the synoptic
circulation in a reduced number of patterns, allowing the
development of robust and efficient non-linear regression
models to downscale coastal impacts.
Regional Sediment Management (RSM):
Recent Advances and Example Case Studies
This full-day short course will take a National look at the
state of Regional Sediment Management from federal and
non-federal perspectives. We will highlight RSM experiences and case studies, review how to implement RSM
from stakeholder/partner collaboration; use of applicable
policy, authorities, and legislation; available tools and data
to identify and evaluate opportunities to improve the
management of sediment; to identifying and calculating
cost savings and benefits, and review current issues and
challenges to implementing RSM.

“Understanding and Working with Nature”
Coastal Sediments ’15 is a technical specialty conference focused on the physical aspects of sediment
processes and morphodynamics of coastal environments. Following previous conferences in the Coastal
Sediments series that were held in 1977, 1987, 1991,
1999, 2003, 2007, and 2011, Coastal Sediments ’15
celebrates 38 years of the Coastal Sediments series
and promotes exchange of cutting-edge knowledge
among researchers in the fields of coastal engineering, geology, oceanography, and related disciplines.
The theme of Coastal Sediments ’15 is “Understanding
and Working with Nature,” chosen to stimulate applications of interdisciplinary knowledge in solving both
short-term and long-term coastal problems.
Student awards
A student paper contest will award top three student
achievers with a monetary award, to be announced at
the Awards Luncheon on Thursday, May 14. Students
must be enrolled full-time at an accredited college or
university and have indicated interest in participating in the student paper contest at the time of paper
submission.
Conference proceedings
All registered delegates will receive an electronic
copy of the published proceedings on CD‐ROM.
Conference information
The conference information desk is located at the
entrance to the Bayside Ballroom. It will be staffed
during conference hours.
Oral presentation information
All presenting authors are requested to submit their
presentation files to the technical staff in the author
preparation room in advance of the scheduled time
of their session. Presenters should try to arrive to their
session rooms 10 minutes prior to the session to meet
the chairperson and ensure the presentation material
is ready. Your chairperson is in charge of overall time
control; presenters should plan on speaking for about
15 minutes and allow 5 minutes for questions.

The Author Preparation Room will be in the Conference Office (Room 1920 — see floor plan pages 1213), and will be open during the following times:

Laptops will be available to proof your presentations;
authors are required to turn in their presentations
as far in advance as possible (and no later than 7:30
a.m. [07:30] for morning sessions and noon [12:00]
for afternoon sessions on the day when they will be
speaking). Early uploading of your file will ensure that
your presentation will be loaded on the appropriate
computer prior to your session.
Poster presentation information
All presenting authors will be provided with one
horizontal, free-standing 8-foot-wide by 4-foot-high
(2.4-m-wide and 1.2-m-high) display board and Velcro
for hanging your poster. Each poster booth will share
a 6-foot-long (1.8 m) by 30-inch (0.8 m)-wide table
underneath the poster board. Electricity will NOT be
available; please plan your presentation accordingly.
Session chairs
All technical session chairs should check in at the media/author preparation room prior to their sessions
to inform CS15 staff that they are present. Individual
presentations need to start at the time indicated on
the program schedule and end in a total of 20 minutes (15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes
for discussion). Prompt attention to timing will allow
delegates that are coming from other technical sessions to attend the presentations they planned. If the
presentation and discussions end before the 20 minutes has elapsed, the following presentation should
not start until its designated time.
Session chairs should arrive at their technical session room at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled
start of their session to meet presenters and ensure
presentation material is ready for the session. The session chair will have a form to complete indicating the
name of each presenter that presented a paper in the
session. All sessions will have a chairperson’s book to
provide necessary introductions and announcements,
and a student volunteer to assist with any technical
issues.

South San Diego:
Point Loma to Imperial Beach
Friday, 15 May • 09:00-14:00 • Cost: $125
The Coronado-Silver Strand-Imperial Beach
coast is one of the most highly altered stretches
of shoreline in southern California. The tour
will highlight changes (natural and man-made)
to sand beaches and wildlife habitats. The tour
will begin at Cabrillo National Monument at
the southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula, a
spectacular vantage point overlooking coastline
from the San Diego harbor to Coronado and the
U.S.-Mexico border. The tour will include a drive
through the City of Coronado, past the famous
Hotel Del Coronado, along the Silver Strand,
ending with a visit to the Tijuana Estuary Visitors
Center. Lunch will be provided.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Friday, 15 May • 09:00-14:00 • Cost: $125
The world renowned Scripps Institution of
Oceanography (SIO), founded in 1903, is one of
the oldest and largest centers for ocean, earth,
and atmospheric science research and education in the world. The SIO tour will include visits
to the Coastal Data Information Program (CDIP),
Hydraulics Lab, and Experimental Aquarium and
will end with a Scripps Pier (usually closed to the
public) walk and discussion of the local geology
and geomorphology. This tour will involve some
walking (downhill) between research labs. Lunch
will be provided.
San Diego’s Erosional Coastline, and
Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Friday, 15 May • 08:30-16:00 • Cost: $175
San Diego’s erosional coastline of beaches, sea cliffs,
and lagoons will be highlighted. Natural and human
induced sediment issues will be discussed, beginning at Oceanside Harbor, a microcosm of southern
California sediment supply and transport issues.
Oceanside illustrates the complex cost/benefit relationship between beaches, harbors, and wetlands.
Featured points on this trip will include the Carlsbad
seawall, Bataquitos Lagoon, bluffs at Beacons Beach,
and the Cardiff State Beach sand nourishment site
for the 2012 Regional Beach Sand Project. The tour
will stop at the world-renowned Scripps Institution
of Oceanography to visit various research labs, and
to walk on the Scripps pier. Lunch will be provided.
