Body Mapping (This Is Not an App For
Your Phone): The “Backspin” has been born
and is ready to play for Spring 2011. PING
Apparel has introduced a body mapping polo
that has all the technical features needed for a
day on the course. Body mapping, a highend technology used in apparel, has multiple
benefits. For a traditional polo, fabric is
knitted and then cut and sewn into a specific
style. With body mapping, the pattern is
actually knit into the fabric. This allows for a
garment to have multiple textures and colors
but no visible seams. PING Apparel has used
this technology in the “Backspin” to allow
venting at the shoulders, front side seams
and down the back of the garment without
a seam. “If you are the type of player who
looks for perfection and innovation in your
clothing, then this is your polo. With the use
of body mapping a golfer is able to stay cool
and dry with a great looking shirt,” according
to Jeff Knapp, VP of Sales for PING Apparel.
Listen When the Ladies Speak: The
ladies in the golfing world have spoken and
PING Apparel has been listening. For this
season PING Apparel is launching it’s largest
women’s collection and is not holding back
on performance and style. Four new polos
have been added to the line as well as one
outerwear item. When creating the new line
for women the focus remained on fit and
function. These polos not only look great;
but ladies, they are made to golf in!
The New Torque To Be Unveiled In Time
For Spring ‘11: With the introduction of
the “Fade” wind shirt and all of its success,
PING Apparel has launched the all-new
“Torque.” Based on what many have come
to love, the all-new “Torque” has taken the
greatness of the “Fade” and advanced its
design. This new wind shirt is lightweight,
durable and quiet, a must for golfers. The
“Torque” features PING Apparel’s PW
technology so it is wind resistant and water
repellent. Most golfers today are looking for
that piece of clothing which is functional
and easy to carry or fit into a golf bag. This is
an item that can be worn while playing the
game or off the course with a pair of slacks

TERMS & DEFINITIONS
Ace
(also called a “hole-in-one”)
a score of one on a hole — holing the first shot.
Albatross
(also called a “double eagle”)
a score of three under par for a hole.
Backspin
reverse rotation on the ball.
Camber
1. the curve of a club’s sole, either heel-to-toe or
leading edge-to-back of sole, to soften the sole’s
edges and create a more forgiving club.
Carve
expression has been used to describe shaping
or bending a shot to fit a hole’s terrain or curve
around something.
Lay Up
(also “lay back, play for position,” sometimes
“transport shot”) a shot played to a particular
location to allow for an easier subsequent shot
or to keep the ball from going too far.
Links
originally referred to seaside courses on “links
land”, now used loosely to mean any golf
course.
Loft
1. the angle/slope/pitch/grade of the clubface
relative to the shaft of the club from the frontal
plane.
2. hoist or lift.
Major
one of four annual tournaments (The Masters,
U.S. Open, British Open or PGA).
Chapman
a variation on a four-ball match between two
2-man teams where each player hits a tee shot,
then players on the same team switch and hit
their teammate’s ball. After the second shots
are hit the team plays only one of the balls (of
their choice), alternating strokes until holed.
Medalist
the player in a stroke play, or medal play,
competition with the fewest strokes/lowest
score, the winner.
Condor
(also “triple eagle”)
a score of four under par on a hole.
Pitch
a relatively short, lofted shot designed to land
softly and not roll much.
Deuce
a score of 2 on a hole.
Punch Out
hitting a relatively small chip shot to extricate
oneself from trouble when a longer shot is
needed but obstructed.
Dogleg
a hole on which the fairway has an angle, turn
or bend in it like a dog’s leg.
Dormie
a match play situation where one player or
team is ahead by the same number of holes as
are remaining in the match (meaning that the
other player or team can tie the match, at best,
but cannot win).
Eagle
a score of two under par for a hole.
Flex
the relative strength (stiffness or softness) of a
club shaft.
Grind
1. maintaining or intensifying one’s mental
focus, similar to the expressions “bear
down” or “stay focused,” generally meaning
to concentrate on every shot and not get
distracted.
2.“custom grind” generic label referring to
some proprietary iron head or sole shape,
usually on forged irons – could also refer to
the fact that some players alter their own
club swing weight, flange shape, etc. using a
grinding wheel.
Hybrid Club
(also “hybrid iron, hybrid wood”)
a club that combines playing characteristics
of both woods and irons; one valid method
for differentiating between hybrid irons and
hybrid woods is whether the face is flat (line
irons) or has horizontal bulge and vertical roll
(curved face, like woods).
Knife
another term for a one iron.
Muni
short for a municipal or city owned golf course.
Pure
(also “flush, solid, on the sweet spot, on the
screws, on the nut”) a shot struck perfectly on
the center of gravity of the club.
Rabbit
a touring professional that is not a regular
member of the tour and who, therefore, must
play in a qualifying round to “win a spot” in
order to enter a tour event.
Rainmaker
another term for skying the ball or hitting a
pop-up.
Ranger
a person designated to patrol the course,
keeping an eye out for problems in general, but
usually present to promote a reasonable pace of
play or keep things moving.
Scratch
zero handicap, no handicap stroke deducted.
Shooter
a shot that flies further than desired as a result
of decreased backspin, usually resulting from
long grass between the ball and clubface at
impact.
Stinger
a low penetrating long shot, usually with a long
iron or wood played with the hands forward
and the ball position back farther than normal
to decrease trajectory.
Torque
the tendency of a club’s shaft to twist or rotate
around its long axis.
Knockdown
a shot played with less than a full swing, mainly
to control distance, trajectory and spin.
