Monthly Newsletter - June 2010 Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs Monthly Newsletter - June 2010 Welcome Happy Father's Day In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. By contrast, Mother’s Day has been around since 1914. We guess fathers have a lot of ground to make up. VillaSport honors all fathers and celebrates fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society. The Perfect Father's Day Gift Looking for the perfect Father's Day gift? Give him a VillaSpa gift card for a Sport Massage and a pair of Men's Okabi Slippers. There is no better way to express your love and appreciation than to give gifts of relaxation and comfort. Gift cards are available in any denomination at VillaSpa. In June, we will offer BodyPump™, Mat Pilates, Mother/Daughter Fitness, BodyVive™, BodyCombat™, BodyJam™ and Salsa Fit in the new Club Room. The warm weather allows Aqua Fitness enthusiasts to enjoy the outdoor pools for many classes. The new Jump Rope class on the Court has already proven to be a popular choice for an unbelievable workout. Click here to view the entire Group Fitness Schedule for June. All classes listed are included in your membership. Stretching for the Computer Athlete Before athletes go onto the field, they prepare their muscles for the intended activity. A pitcher will go through a series of warmup techniques that usually involve stretching before pitching. A gymnast will make sure her muscles are warm and pliable to avoid a strain that may keep her out of competition. An accountant, attorney, or anyone who sits at a desk or computer terminal for prolonged periods may develop muscular tension and pain. Like athletes, taking five or ten minutes to warm up through stretching will prepare the body for the day’s work. It is also helpful to learn to stretch spontaneously throughout the day by stretching any particular area of the body that feels tense for a minute or two. [Stretching for the computer athlete.] Accessed online May 24, 2010. www.afpafintness.com/articles 10,000 Steps June 1 - 30 10,000 Steps a Day! Lift your legs with your knees bent and balance, keeping your torso straight, your shoulders relaxed and your abdominals engaged. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Nutrition The Caloric Balance Equation When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight for a lifetime, the bottom line is – calories count! Weight management is all about balance - balancing the number of calories you consume with the number of calories your body uses or "burns off." A calorie is defined as a unit of energy supplied by food. A calorie is a calorie, regardless of its source. Whether you're eating carbohydrates, fats, sugars, or proteins, all of them contain calories. Caloric balance is like a scale. To remain in balance and maintain your body weight, the calories consumed (from foods) must be balanced by the calories used (in normal body functions, daily activities, and exercise). If you are... Your caloric balance status is... Maintaining your weight "in balance." You are eating roughly the same number of calories that your body is using. Your weight will remain stable. Gaining weight "in caloric excess." You are eating more calories than your body is using. You will store these extra calories as fat and you'll gain weight. Losing weight "in caloric deficit." You are eating fewer calories than you are using. Your body is pulling from its fat storage cells for energy, so your weight is decreasing. To find out if you are in caloric balance: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/calories/index.html#Striking a Balance Social Clubs Book Club New Book Readings for June! Arnica, also called Arnica Montana, is a plant belonging to the sunflower family. The plant has large yellow or orange flowers, bright green leaves and has a slight aromatic scent. It is native to the mountainous regions of Europe, Siberia, Southern Russia, and cultivated in North America. The name Arnica is derived from the Greek word "arnakis," which means "lamb's coat," in reference to the soft flowers and leaves. Arnica Montana, used in Naturopathica's gel and oil, contains Helenalin, which is an ingredient used in anti-inflammatory preparations. What is it used for? Source: http://find.myrecipes.com/ Y O U R S T O R I E S Success Story Meet the Guest Family: Tammy, Dave, Taylor and Zachary We joined VillaSport at the beginning of the year to make a change in our lifestyles. When we first started, we were a bit apprehensive. “Here goes another try at losing weight and getting in shape,” with many other good intentions in the past not working. In March, we joined Lose To Win as a team, with each one of us needing to lose a fair amount of weight. We come to the club almost every day as a team. Mom and Dad encourage the boys, and the boys spur Mom and Dad on. We have seen great results; not just physically, but in our attitudes towards our health and food choices. Since joining VillaSport, we have lost over 126 lbs., 69 of them through Lose To Win. We all have better attitudes about ourselves and where we are headed. It is great to be able to participate as a family team - it pulls us closer as we spur each other on. With its knowledgable staff and helpful trainers, VillaSport is a great place to get into shape, not just individually but as a whole family, changing our lifestyle over to a healthy and active one. We are looking forward to continuing our journey towards a healthier personal and family life. Alice and her cast of characters delighted the children in games and activities; refreshing tea, scones, strawberries, and mini cupcakes tickled everyone's fancy. A Look Back May 2010 Cinco de Mayo What's Cinco de Mayo without chips, salsa, a piñata and a little fiesta? Members stopped by the main lobby to meet other members and club directors and share in the celebration. The BodyJam classes presented a Latin theme, complete with breaking the piñata! Adult Firepit Social The first summer adult social was more an extended winter get-together, as the last snow of winter 2009-10 softly fell. Sixty members joined us at the firepit and co-ed whirlpool, enjoying a complimentary taste of summer wines and the warmth of the hot tub. Old friendships solidified, while new friendships were formed. This is a great event for meeting other members.
