2015 has been a great year so far for ACAE. The
February Lunch and Learn broke attendance
records with the panel of mayors from four of
Alabama’s largest cities. Despite a snow storm for
our northern citizens, the Legislative Seminar was
one of the best ever attended. Then, the board and
committee chairs headed to Mobile for the largest
board meeting in which I’ve ever participated.
We have 15 new members so far this year, and
hope to bring many more new faces into the fold.
Many thanks to those of your reaching out to your
colleagues to join.
ACAE President
Alison Hosp
This is what happens when we all join together and pull in the same direction!
I am glad to see so many members become actively involved. As with most
everything, you get out of ACAE what you put in. So far, the ACAE dividends
seem to be following recent market trends.
Now, however, is when it gets tricky. As the Legislature goes into session, time
management becomes an issue. I hope that ACAE doesn’t get put on your back
burner. We have excellent Lunch and Learns planned on Mondays during the
session, and the golf tournament is NEVER to be missed. Please make the extra
effort to nourish your mind and career during this busy time.
Please contact me at any time that you have questions, concerns, thoughts or
ideas. This is OUR association. Let’s make it the best it can be.

Lunch & Learn
The 2015 Lunch & Learn program is off to a great start this year. Alison Kinney and Virginia Bear, Co-Chairs of the
Lunch & Learn Committee, have been working hard to bring you the most current and relevant topics in the association
and hospitality business. John Carroll started off the year giving an Alabama Ethics Commission Update. In February,
we had a mayoral panel featuring Birmingham Mayor William Bell, Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, Montgomery
Mayor Todd Strange and Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox. In March, Senator Ross covered the history and current
events of the Selma to Montgomery March. It was a fabulous meeting.

Anti-Trust Update!
The United States Supreme Court recently ruled on an important case for all associations with regulatory boards.
Federal Trade Commission Chairwoman Edith Ramirez issued the following statement regarding the decision
by the U.S. Supreme Court in North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners v. Federal Trade Commission:
“Today, the Supreme Court affirmed the Federal Trade Commission’s position in recognizing that a state may
not give private market participants unsupervised authority to suppress competition even if they act through a
formally designated ‘state agency.” In this case, the North Carolina dental board’s members, primarily dentists,
were drawn from the very occupation they regulate, and they barred non-dentists from offering competing teeth
whitening services to consumers. The Court’s decision makes clear that state agencies constituted in this manner
are subject to the federal antitrust laws unless the state actively supervises their decisions. We are pleased
with the Supreme Court’s recognition that the antitrust laws limit the ability of market incumbents to suppress
competition through state professional boards. We will remain vigilant through our enforcement initiatives and
advocacy to safeguard competition and ensure that American consumers benefit from entrepreneurial initiative.”
The Court’s decision affirms a 2013 ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeal for the Fourth Circuit upholding a 2011
Decision and Order by the FTC that the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners illegally thwarted
lower-priced competition by engaging in anticompetitive conduct to prevent non-dentists from providing teeth
whitening services to consumers in the state. In so finding, the FTC rejected the Dental Board’s claim that the
Board’s conduct is protected from federal antitrust scrutiny by the state action doctrine.

ACAE “Caddyshack” Tradeshow
ACAE Prize Party & Golf Outing
Wynlakes Golf & Country Club
May 3rd & 4th
The ACAE Tradeshow and Golf Outing has become our most popular event over the past 26 years, offering outstanding
opportunities for Affiliate and Associate Members to showcase their services, properties and products. Anticipated all
year, this “Members Only” Outing is a unique experience for all who attend.
Golfers Registration @ 9:30 a.m., Golfers Tee Off @ 10:30 a.m., Meeting Planners Express @ 11:00 a.m.
Located at the beautiful Wynlakes Golf & Country Club, the format for the Outing is a four-person team scramble.
This allows all golfers, regardless of skill, to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of fun and fellowship as they visit each hole
sponsor. To encourage everyone to participate and expedite play, we enforce the “no-worse-than-par” rule. Remember,
the emphasis of the Outing is the Tradeshow – not golf, so get ready for an exciting day at Wynlakes! The winners will
be announced and given their awards at the 19th Hole celebration at the end of the day.
Golf Hole Sponsorships
Golf Hole sponsors will have the opportunity to transform the hole into a creative display. Sponsorship includes 2
individuals to participate in the Prize Party; additional Prize Party passes can be purchased for $35/person. In addition,
sponsors can register up to 2 golfers employed by the sponsor company that may not be ACAE members at $100 each
(includes Prize Party). This year we are giving the best hole a Recognized Award and Full Page Ad in the ACAE
newsletter.

Spotlight Member
Rebecca Camerio
Manufacture Alabama
How did you pick this career?
Actually, I think it picked me. Our business is one of opportunity and personality. We
provide our members with a single, unified voice to the public and legislative branch.
My job as Vice-President of Finance with Manufacture Alabama allows me to serve
our members and community in a way that just seems to fit my personality.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your career in association management?
Most frustrating? Most challenging?
We all are subject to various pressures in this business, some more critical than others. Behind the scenes of any
successful business is the day-to-day management. I take great pride and responsibly managing the costs and expenses
of the association while also managing our conventions and events. The balancing of each aspect of the association,
especially the management of our expenditures and profit margins, brings about its own rewards and frustrations. Yet,
the most rewarding aspect would have to be bringing value to our membership and watching our association prosper.
Who was your role model/mentor in the profession?
David Seagraves. I was very fortunate to have worked with David early in my career and for several years. He was the
type of manager that included you in the full process of association management and immersed you in the culture of the
business. I credit Mr. Seagraves with helping me become a better manager and a better person to serve our members.
His kind and soft-spoken management style allowed everyone around him to grow. David always just seemed to lead
and maintain a strong vision for the future of the members.
Any thought on where the profession is headed?
Our profession must remain one that adapts and morphs with the ever-changing times and needs of the association’s
members. I believe there will be sustainable growth in our industry, but I also feel that the fairness and integrity of each
association’s staff plays an important role in the enhancement of a long-term vision and mission statement.
When you are not working, what do you enjoy the most?
Family, traveling and watching movies. I have been blessed with a loving family, which includes amazing children and
grandchildren. My time spent with them shapes and enhances my life, and yet, it feels as if I can never get enough time
with them. Family is certainly a passion of mine. Whether it’s playing Scrabble with my husband, attending football
games, shopping, or eating lunch with my children and, not to forget, going on scavenger hunts with my twin grand
boys—it’s the shared memories that I cherish so much. I also love to travel and see new and different areas of the world.
Each year, my best friend and I, with the blessing of our husbands, take off looking for a new adventure. But when
down time is needed, there is nothing better than some quiet time in front of a fire, or a good movie.
What was the most memorable moment of the job?
While some may say it was the shaping of a piece of successful legislation or a well-attended event that exceeded
revenue projections, I would have to choose a personal moment during one of our Board meetings. Long story short,
Trixie Seagraves had taken two of my children out for the day and returned them safely to their hotel room.
10
Spring • 2015
Upon arrival, the children were so exhausted that they fell soundly asleep, so soundly asleep that they did not hear
me when I was banging on their door and yelling for them to let me in following my meeting and dinner. The door
was somehow jammed and would not open with the hotel key. Like any Mom fearful for their children, in a panic, I
called hotel security and managed to get into the room next to mine. From there, I proceeded to scale the walls of the
third floor hotel balcony—mind you, in a dress and heels—in an effort to reach my children. Let’s just say that it’s a
“M.O.D. report” story Phil Gagnet still remembers to this day.
If you had to choose a different career, what do you think you would have pursued?
Teaching and shaping the lives of children. You can not give children enough love, encouragement, or positive time
and attention. I would find it quite rewarding.
Behind every successful meeting
lies a secret weapon. Here’s yours.
